Just three years ago Alitalia was rescued from the doldrums of bankruptcy when UAE-carrier Eti-had bailed out the Italian airline af-ter taking a 49% stake. Three years on, Alitalia is back in trouble and its administration confirming that that the flag car-rier is now up for sale which comes as a blow to share-holder Etihad.

Last week Alitalia began bankruptcy proceedings for the second time in a decade after its employees rejected job cuts and concessions linked to a €2bn ($2.2bn) recapitalisation plan. Shareholders voted unanimously to file for administration.

According to the BBC, James Ho-gan, chief executive of Etihad,

said: “We have done all we could to support Alitalia, as a minor-ity shareholder, but it is clear this business requires fundamental and far-reaching restructuring to survive and grow in future.

“Without the support of all stake-holders for that restructuring, we are not prepared to continue to invest.”

A report by aviation analysts CAPA says the Italian state has now given Alitalia guarantees for a €600 mil-lion of bridging loans to keep it fly-ing in the short term, and its flight

schedule remains unchanged. The new debt is expected to last for around six months and the govern-ment is unlikely to follow it with any further cash.

This buys time for the administrators to explore the po-tential, if any, to save Alitalia, in-cluding looking for potential acquir-ers. The Italian air-line’s long record

of losses, its multiple restructur-ings and its administrations in the past are likely to deter other air-lines from investing. Alitalia has long had a Lazarus-like ability to come back from the dead, but its workforce’s latest refusal to ac-cept the need for change could be the final nail in its coffin this time.

First fleet of H135s for French emergency medical services fully operational

Airbus Helicopters has completed deliveries of three H135s, the latest version of its family, for emergency medical services (EMS) operations by SAF Group. The first aircraft is already in ser-vice in Toulouse, while the second and third helicopters are destined to perform EMS missions in Alençon and Besançon. These helicopters are the very first H135s to be used in the EMS role in France. “We are very happy with the additional capabilities, including night flying, further reduced sound levels, and increased payload, that the H135 is providing us for these critical missions.” said Christophe Rosset, CEO of SAF. “We require helicopters with a high level of reli-ability and availability, always ready to transport critical patients 24/7 from an accident site or from one hospital to another and the H135 meets our stringent requirements” he added. SAF Hélicoptères operates seven days a week for all types of civilian rescue and protection opera-tions, alongside safety services with a fleet of 40 Airbus helicopters, including 27 EC135s – an earlier variant of the H135 family.

MRO & PRODUCTION NEWS Jet Aviation completes and redelivers major refurbishment on Boeing B737

Jet Aviation has redelivered a refurbished Boeing B737, which was completed in conjunction with a scheduled C-1 maintenance inspection. The BBJ1 had been out of service for a number of years before it was sold to the owner and subsequently refurbished. The same long-range Boeing Business Jet was also outfitted by Jet Aviation in 1999 – and happens to be the first BBJ Completions contract the company was ever awarded. The full interior refurbishment was completed without making any structural changes. Some of the wood marquetry was removed and replaced, such as that of the valances. All of the chairs, sidewalls and carpets were re-placed, and the entire exterior was repainted. In addition to the refurbishment, C-1 check and general defect rectifications, the maintenance facility installed a new Rockwell Collins Venue Cabin Management System (CMS), activated Swift Broadband, upgraded the Future Aircraft Navigation System (FANS) and configured ADS- B Out. It also improved the soundproofing us-ing its new targeted sound prediction technology, and implemented a number of service bul-letins, including a Low Cabin Altitude modification.

airberlin reports €781.9m loss for full year 2016

airberlin reported a net loss of €781.9m for 2016 compared to a net loss of €446.6m the previous year. The airline reported revenues of €3.79bn, compared to revenues of €4.08bn in 2015. The de-crease in revenue in 2016 is due primarily to a ca-pacity reduction of 4% and the decline in revenue per passenger (yield) by 3.8%. airberlin said the threat of terrorism in the Eastern Mediterranean region led to excess capacity and an associated fall in prices in the leisure sector. These factors im-pacted negatively the business results of 2016. As a counter-measure, airberlin expanded its long-haul network, added more XL seats, introduced buy-on-board and launched a new short-haul European business class product. Ancillary revenue grew by a significant 20 per cent in 2016. The necessary re-structuring costs of €334.8m for the transition to the new airberlin saw the EBIT drop to €-667.1m in 2016 compared to the previous year. The provi-sions were made mainly for fleet harmonization to Airbus aircraft and staff, plus consulting services.

Southwest posts first-quarter record operating revenues of US$4.9bn

Southwest Airlines’ total operating revenues in-creased 1.2%, year-over-year, to a first-quarter record US$4.9bn, driven largely by first-quarter record passenger revenues of US$4.4bn. South-west reported net income of US$351m, operating income of US$658m and an operating margin of 13.5%. On a unit basis, operating revenues de-clined 2.8% year-over-year, which was in line with the company’s expectations. Demand for South-west’s low fares remained strong and the fare environment remained competitive, resulting in a 2.6% decline in passenger revenue yield. Based on current bookings and improved yield trends, the company expects positive year-over-year RASM in second quarter 2017.

Finnair Group reports first-quarter results

Finnair Group reported that first-quarter revenues increased 3.3% to €554.4 m. EBITDAR was €50.1m compared to €36.4m the previous year. Net cash flow from operating activities totalled €23.9m, compared to €10.4m in 2016 and net cash flow from investing activities amounted to €145.1m compared to €-247.3m in 2016. (€1.00 = US$1.09)

MTU’s first quarter net earnings up 21%

MTU Aero Engines AG saw its revenues increase by 15% to €1,261.3m in the first quarter of 2017 (1-3/2016: €1,097.9m). The group’s operating profit improved by 20% from €131.3m to €157.0m, pushing the EBIT margin up from 12.0% to 12.4%.

FINANCIAL NEWSEarnings after tax rose in line with operating profit, increasing by 21% to €111.0m (1-3/2016: €91.5m). The increase in MTU’s first-quarter revenues is primarily due to strong growth in the commercial maintenance business, where revenues increased by 37% to €588.4m (1-3/2016: €428.8m). Reve-nues in the commercial engine business increased by 10%, from €556.0m to €611.4m. The V2500, the GEnx for the Boeing 787 and 747-8, and the PW1100G-JM for the A320neo generated the greatest share of revenues in this business unit. Spirit AeroSystems reports first-quarter 2017 financial results

Spirit’s first-quarter 2017 revenue was US$1.7bn, up by 1% compared to the same period of 2016, pri-marily driven by higher production deliveries on the Airbus A350 XWB, partially offset by lower produc-tion deliveries on the Boeing 777 program. Spirit’s backlog at the end of the first quarter of 2017 was approximately US$46bn, with work packages on all commercial platforms in the Boeing and Airbus backlog. Operating income for the first quarter of 2017 was US$214m, compared to US$267m in the same period of 2016, primarily due to higher fa-vorable changes in estimates recognized during the first quarter of 2016, which were US$42m higher when compared to those recognized in the current period. Cash balance at the end of the quarter was US$672m. The company’s US$650m revolving credit facility remained undrawn at the end of the quarter.

Quantum Marketing Group, in partnership with b2b-aero.com GmbH, are creating the aviation in-dustry’s first smart INTEGRATED AIRCRAFT TEAR DOWN parts recycling program for aircraft disman-tlement, airlines, overhauled and repair shops and MRO’s. The new patent-pending application will run on the OneAero-MRO platform providing part locat-ing of tear down parts in a pre-sales system with verification, certification, tracking, history, repair and overhaul methodology with the ability to match airline fleet part utilization history. The system has all of the compliance and tracking via OneAero-MRO’s platform including capability, MRO tracking (that integrates into MRO and Airline ERP and EDI systems), fleet intelligence, part inventory search and industry directory services. The goal is to have tear down parts get to market faster and provide airline customers with a new tool to help find and manage their aircraft parts requirements. Their goal is simple - to make locating, repairing and storing aircraft parts in a proactive way rather than a reac-tive manner, to help airlines find, better manage and have available tear down inventory faster, smarter, less expensive, while making their jobs easier.

Finnair and Finavia, together with Futurice, will test the use of face recognition technology for the check-in process of Finnair flights at Helsinki Air-port. During the test period taking place between May 2 until May 23, the companies will gather in-formation on the applicability of face recognition technology to the airport environment and the systems and processes used by the airline. Fin-nair has invited a group of 1,000 frequent flyers to take part in the test. Finnair customers taking part in the test will use a test application to send their face portraits to the test system. When checking in to their flights, customers will use a designated check-in desk, where the face recognition technol-ogy will be installed. A customer service agent will then check the customer’s travel information and indicate in the test system if the face recognition was successful.
