ThepageyourefertodiscussesthediameteroftheenginesusedaboardtheBoeing757.Whatisnotexplicitlystatedinthatarticleisthatthedimensionsdiscussedreferonlytothemaximumdiameteroftheengineandnotthewidthsofthevariouscomponentswithin.

Inordertobetterunderstandthepartsofajetengineandhowthisformofpropulsionworks,letusbrieflyrevisitthedifferenttypesofjetengines.Theearliestformofjetpropulsionwastheturbojet.Thistypeofpowerplantemploysaseriesofcompressorbladesmountedonrotatingdisksthatsqueezeincomingairtoahigherpressureandtemperature.Thecompressedairisthenmixedwithfuelandignited.Thehightemperatureairpassesthroughanotherseriesofrotatingbladescalledaturbine,whichcausesthisturbinetospin.Theturbinerotorsareattachedtoacentralshaftrunningthelengthoftheengine,sotheturbine's

spinningmotioncausesthisshafttorotateaswell.Alsoattachedtothesamecentralshaftisthecompressorsectionatthefrontoftheengine.Thisconnectionbetweentheturbineandcompressorsectionscausesthecompressorstagestocontinuespinning,bringinginadditionalairtokeeptheenginefunctioninginarepeatingcycle.Oncetheairflowmovespasttheturbines,itisexhaustedthroughanozzle.Theexpansionofthehighpressuregasesagainstthenozzlewallscreatesthrustthatpushestheengineforward,aswellasthevehicleitisattachedto.
Anothertypeofjetthatissimilartobutmoreefficientthantheturbojetistheturbofan.Aturbofanusesthesamecomponentsdescribedabovewiththeadditionofalargefaninfrontofthecompressorsection.Thisfanisconnectedtothesamecentralshaftthatturnsthecompressorbladessothatthefanalsorotates.Asitdoesso,thefanacceleratesawidecolumnofairtofurtherincreasethrust.Airpassingthroughthecenterportionofthefanentersthecompressorwhereitmovesthroughthecoreoftheenginejustlikeonatypicalturbojet.Airacceleratedthroughthefan'souterdiameter,however,flowsaroundtheenginecorewithoutpassingthroughit.Thisprocesscanbebetterunderstoodbystudyingananimationofairflowthroughaturbofan.
Therearetwobasictypesofturbofansthataredifferentiatedbytherelativeamountofairthatflowsthroughthefanandaroundtheenginecoreversustheamountofairthatflowsthroughthecoreitself.Aturbofanwithalowbypassratiomeansthatmostoftheairflowingthroughtheenginepassesthroughtheturbojetcoreandverylittlethroughtheouterfanbypassduct.Suchenginesaremostcommononmilitarycombataircraftlikefighters.Today'scommercialairlines,likethe757,areinsteadfittedwithhighbypassturbofanengines.Ahighbypassturbofanconsistsofaverylargediameterfanandamuchsmallerdiameterturbojetcorewithin.

disks,allofwhicharesmallerthanthefanatthefrontoftheengine.Therotarycomponentswithinahighbypassturbofan,inparticular,areoftenonlyasmallfractionofthefandiameter.Mostspecificationsdescribingtheoverallsizeofanenginewilllistthefandiametersincethismeasurementdefinestheengine'smaximumwidth.Ourearlierarticleaboutthe757usesthisdimensiontocomparethediameteroftheenginenacelletothatofthefuselage.
Withthatintroductionaside,let'stakeacloserlookatthespecificquestionofdebrisfoundatthePentagonfollowingtheattackon11September2001.Whileresearchingthistopic,wecameacrossmanywebsitesclaimingthatitwasnotAmericanAirlinesFlight77thatwashijackedandpurposefullycrashedintothePentagonduringtheterroristattackthatmorning.Theauthorsofthesesitesinsteadbelievethatanyofavarietyofmilitaryaircraft,cruisemissiles,orotherweaponswereusedbytheUSgovernmenttoattackthePentagon,andthestoriesofterroristhijackingsweresimplyacoverupforthesinisterscheme.

Accordingtotheacceptedstory,AmericanAirlinesFlight77washijackedbyfivealQaedaterroristsasitwastravelingfromWashingtonDCtoLosAngeles.TheaircraftinvolvedinthishijackingwasaBoeingModel757200withtheBoeingcustomercode757223andtheregistrationnumberN644AA.ThissameaircraftispicturedaboveinaphototakenatLoganInternationalAirportinBostonon7August2001.TheterroristssteeredtheplaneintothewestsideofthePentagonkilling59passengersandcrewaswellas125victimsontheground.
ThosewhodoubtthisversionofeventspointtowreckageatthePentagonasproofthatsomeotherkindofaircraftormissilewasactuallyresponsiblefortheattack.Probablytheonepieceofdebristhathaspromptedthemostdebateisthefollowingphotoofwhatlookslikearotarydiskfromtheinterioroftheplane'sengine.Thisdiskcouldbepartofafan,acompressor,oraturbinerotorfrominsidetheengine,butthebladesarenotpresentandwerepresumablyknockedoffintheimpact.

Basedonthesizesofthepersonstandingnexttothedebrisandotherobjectsinthephotographsthatwecanuseforcomparison,ithasbeenestimatedthatthediskisapproximately25to30inches(63.5to76.2cm)across.Obviously,thispieceisfarsmallerthanthemaximumenginediameterof6feet(1.8m)ormoreleadingmanytodrawtheconclusionthattheitemisnotfroma757engine.ThatconjecturecausesconspiracytheoriststobelievethatamuchsmallervehiclemusthavestruckthePentagoninstead.
However,wehavealreadyseenthatrotatingcomponentswithinaturbofanenginecanvarywidelyinsize.Inordertodeterminewhetherthiscomponentcouldhavepossiblycomefroma757,weneedtotakeacloserlookattheengineinstalledaboardtheaircraftregisteredN644AA.Boeingofferedtwodifferentengineoptionstocustomersofthe757200.AirlinescouldchoosebetweenthePratt&WhitneyPW2000familyortheRollsRoyceRB211series.

Pentagonrubble.Ourbestestimateisthattheengine'stwelvecompressordiskhubs(withoutbladesattached)areabout36%thewidthofthefan.Thefiveturbinediskhubsappeartobeslightlysmalleratapproximately34%thefandiameter.AccordingtoBrassey'sWorldAircraft&SystemsDirectoryandJane's,thefandiameteroftheRB211535E4Bengineis74.5inches(189.2cm).Itthenfollowsthatthecompressordiskhubsareapproximately27inches(69cm)acrosswhiletheturbinediskhubsareabout25inches(63.5cm)indiameter.BothofthesedimensionsfitwithintherangeofvaluesestimatedfortheenginecomponentpicturedinthewreckageatthePentagon.
Wecantakethisanalysisastepfurtherbyalsoexploringsomeofthealternatetheoriesthathavebeenputforwardbythosebelievingthisobjectcomesfromadifferentaircraft.TwoofthemostcommonclaimswehaveseensuggestthattheplaneusedintheattackwasaDouglasA3SkywarriororaNorthropGrummanRQ4GlobalHawk.TheA3isanairbornejammingaircraftoriginallyorderedbytheUSNavyduringthe1950s.ThetypeisnowretiredfromfrontlineservicethoughahandfularestillusedfortestingpurposesbythedefensecontractorRaytheon.TheGlobalHawkisanunmannedaerialvehicleusedbytheAirForceforreconnaissancemissions.Neitheroftheseplanesbearsmorethanasuperficialresemblancetothe757,butwewillacceptthepossibilitythattheycouldbemistakenforacommercialairlinergiventheconfusiononSeptember11.
Forthesakeofthisinvestigation,theonlyissueweshallconsideristheenginesthatpowerbothplanes.TheA3wasequippedwithtwoPratt&WhitneyJ57turbojetslikethatpicturedbelow.TheJ57datestotheearly1950sandisratherantiquatedbytoday'sstandards.

Forsomereason,mostoftheconspiratorialsitesinsteadmakeextensivereferencetotheA3beingpoweredbyaPratt&WhitneyJT8Dengine.Moreover,thesesitesclaimthattheJT8Disaturbojet.TheJT8Disactuallyalowbypassturbofanthatwasdevelopedforuseaboardcommercialaircraftlikethe727and737.WehavenotfoundanysourcethatindicatestheJT8DwaseverusedontheA3Skywarrior,soitisunclearwhytheoriginatorsoftheA3theoryaresoinfatuatedwiththisparticularpowerplant.Nevertheless,wewillincludeitinourinvestigationforcompleteness.

ThisanalysisindicatesthatallthreeoftheseenginesaretoosmalltomatchtheenginecomponentphotographedatthePentagon.Somesitesalsosuggestthepartmightbefromtheaircraft'sauxiliarypowerunit(APU).AnAPUisessentiallyasmalljetenginemountedinthetailofanaircraftthatprovidesadditionalpower,particularlyduringanemergency.However,APUstendtobemuchsmallerthanjetengines,andthecomponentpicturedatthePentagonistoolargetomatchanyfoundinanAPU.IthasalsobeensuggestedthattheattackwasconductedbyacruisemissileliketheTomahawkorStormShadow,buttheseandotherweaponsarepoweredbyenginesnomorethan15inches(38cm)across.ThesepowerplantsareobviouslyfartoosmalltoaccountforthePentagonwreckage.
Whateverpiecethisis,itappearstobeonlythecentralhubofacompressororturbinestage.Normally,eachoftheserotatingstageswouldbefittedwithseveralcurvedbladesmountedalongitscircumference.Thesebladeswereapparentlyknockedofftherotorhubfoundinthewreckageduetotheforceoftheimpact.Thelossofthesebladesisunfortunatesincedifferentmanufacturersoftenadoptuniqueshapesfortheirfan,compressor,andturbinebladesthatwouldmakethesourceofthecomponentmucheasiertoidentify.Nonetheless,wehavebeenabletolocatethefollowingpictureoftheintermediatepressurecompressorsectionoftheRB211thatappearstomatchseveralcharacteristicsofthePentagondebris.NotethatthisphotoappearstobefromtheRB211524whichisanupratedrelativeoftheRB211535usedontheBoeing747and767.ThisenginemodelcontainssevenintermediatepressurecompressorstagescomparedtothesixoftheRB211535.However,thecompressordisksusedonbothenginesarebelievedtobenearlyidentical.

OnesimilaritybetweenthetwophotoscanbeseeninthecleatsalongtheedgeofthePentagonobject.Thesedevicesarecalleddovetailslotsandprovideattachmentpointsforthecompressorblades.TheshapesoftheseslotsonthePentagonwreckageappeartomatchthoseontheRB211assemblyshownontheleft.Furthermore,the"nosepiece"juttingoutfromthecenterofthediskinthePentagonphotosharescommonalitieswiththecentralshaftvisibleintheRB211photo.
TheaboveanalysisindicatesthatthePentagondebrisdoesinfactmatchthecharacteristicsofarotordiskfromtheRollsRoyceRB211535.Thewreckageismostlikelyacompressorstagegiventheshapeofthedovetailslots.Itisdifficulttobecertainexactlywhich

compressordiskitissincethesixrotorsoftheintermediatepressuresectionandsixhighpressurecompressordisksareofsimilarsize.Theprimarydifferencefromonecompressortothenextisthesmallerspanofthecompressorbladesastheairflowsfurtherintotheengine,butthesebladesarenolongerattachedtothewreckage.However,additionalcluesinthephotosuggesttherotordiskisprobablyfromthehighpressuresectionorperhapstheverylastdiskoftheintermediatepressurecompressors.
Webelievethediskismostlikelyahighpressurecompressorbecauseoftheshapeofthepiecejuttingfromitscenter.Thisitemispartofthecentralshaftthatrunsthelengthoftheenginetoconnecttherotatingstagesofthefan,compressor,andturbine.TheRB211isdescribedasatripleshaftortriplespoolturbofansinceitusesthreeconcentricshaftstodrivethevariousrotatingelementsoftheengine.Theseshaftsaredifferentiatedbytherelativepressureofthegasespassingthroughtherotorstagesattachedtothem.Thelongestshaftwiththesmallestdiameterlocatedclosesttothecenterlineconnectsthelowpressure(LP)enginecomponents.ThisshaftisrotatedbytheLPturbines,locatedjustaheadofthenozzle,anddrivesthelargefanatthefrontoftheengine.
RB211schematicillustratingthelow,intermediate,andhighpressureshafts
TheLPshaftrotateswithinashorter,largerdiametershaftthatdrivestheintermediatepressure(IP)system.ThisshaftrotatesatahigherrateandconnectstheIPturbinestagetothesixIPcompressordisks.Thethirdconcentricshaftistheshortestwiththelargestdiameterandhighestrateofrotationtodrivetheengine'shighpressure(HP)system.ThisshaftconnectstheHPturbinetothesixHPcompressors.ThedebrisphotographedatthePentagonappearstobeconnectedtothreeconcentricshaftsofincreasingdiameter,suggestingthatitmostlikelycomesfromthehighpressuresystemofatriplespoolturbofanliketheRB211535.
Alternatively,thisdiskcouldbethelastoftheintermediatepressurecompressorrotorsandthelargerdiametershaftweseemightbethestartoftheshaftonwhichthehighpressurecompressorsaremounted.Ifaphotooftheoppositesideofthediskwereavailable,itshouldbeeasiertotellexactlywhichsectionofcompressorsitcomesfrom.Nevertheless,

Sincethisarticlewasfirstpublished,wehavereceivedseveralcommentsfromreaderscitingaquotefromRollsRoycespokesmanJohnW.Brownwhosaid,"ItisnotapartfromanyRollsRoyceenginethatI'mfamiliarwith..."ThecriticsgoontosuggestthatthisstatementdisprovesallofouranalysisindicatingthediskisacompressorstagefromtheRollsRoyceRB211535.However,asimplereviewofthesourceofthisquoteshowsjusttheopposite.Thematerialisfromanarticletitled"ControversySwirlingOverSeptember11PentagonMystery:IndustryExpertsCan'tExplainPhotoEvidence"writtenbyChristopherBollynthatappearedontheproconspiracywebsiteAmericanFreePress.
ThearticledescribesJohnBrownasaspokesmanforRollsRoyceinIndianapolis,Indiana.ThislocationishometotheAllisonEnginefactorythatbuildstheAE3007HturbofanusedaboardtheGlobalHawk.Brown'squoteregardingthemysterywreckagestatesthat,"ItisnotapartfromanyRollsRoyceenginethatI'mfamiliarwith,andcertainlynottheAE3007HmadehereinIndy."Furthermore,thearticlecorrectlynotesthattheRB211isnotbuiltinIndianapolisbutattheRollsRoyceplantinDerby,England.SinceBrownisaspokesmanforAllisonEngines,whichwasanindependentcompanythatonlybecameasubsidaryofRollsRoycein1995,itstandstoreasonthatanenginebuiltintheUnitedKingdomwouldbeonehe'snot"familiarwith."ThearticleevengoesontopointoutthatBrowncouldnotidentifyspecificpartsfromoneengineoranothersinceheisnotanengineerorassemblylinetechnicianwhowouldbefamiliarwiththeinternalcomponentsofturbineengines.
Forwhatit'sworth(anditisn'tworthmuch,giventheauthor'sapparentlackofjournalisticskill),theBollynarticleactuallysupportstheevidenceassembledonthissite.ThearticleprovidesquotesfromHoneywellAerospaceindicatingthatthepiecedidnotcomefromanAPU,fromAllisonEnginessuggestingthatitisnotacomponentfoundintheturbofanusedonGlobalHawk,andfromTeledyneContinentalMotorsindicatingthatitisnotpartofacruisemissileengine.Alloftheseconclusionsmatchthoseexplainedabove.
PerhapsanevenmoreconclusivepieceofwreckagewasfoundamongotherdebrisphotographedatthePentagonfollowingtheimpact.ThecomponentshownbelowhasappearedonseveralconspiracytheorywebsitesclaimingthatitdoesnotmatchanyknowncomponentoftheRB211andmustcomefromadifferenttypeofengine.

AnotherpieceofenginedebrisfoundatthePentagon
Thisitemappearstobepartofthecasingofthecombustionsection.Thisportionofajetengineislocatedaftofthecompressors,anditisherethatthehighpressureairismixedwithfuelandignited.Thecircumferenceofthiscircularcasingcontainsseveralholesthroughwhichfuelinjectorsspraythejetfuelneededforcombustion.Thenumber,size,andshapeofthesenozzleholesisgenerallyuniquetoaparticularenginetypeandcanbeusedtoidentifytheenginemodelitcomesfrom.Basedonthecurvatureofthedebris,thepieceshownhereappearstobeabouthalfofthetotalcombustorcase.Wecancountsixnozzleportsalongitscircumferencefromtheregionnearesttheflooraroundtothetop,whichrepresentsaboutonethirdofthetotalcase.Wecanalsoseesixscrewholesalongthecircumferenceofeachnozzleportthatareusedtoattachthefuelinjectors.

Insummary,wehavestudiedtwokeypiecesofwreckagephotographedatthePentagonshortlyafterSeptember11andfoundthemtobeentirelyconsistentwiththeRollsRoyceRB211535turbofanenginefoundonaBoeing757operatedbyAmericanAirlines.ThecircularenginediskdebrisisjusttherightsizeandshapetomatchthecompressorstagesoftheRB211,anditalsoshowsevidenceofbeingattachedtoatripleshaftturbofanliketheRB211.WhilemanyhaveclaimedthewreckageinsteadcomesfromaJT8DorAE3007Hturbofan,wehaveshownthattheseenginesaretoosmalltomatchthedebris.Furthermore,wehavestudiedwhatclearlylooksliketheoutershellofacombustioncaseandfoundthatitsfuelinjectornozzleportsmatchupexactlytothoseillustratedinBoeingdocumentationfortheRB211535engine.ThereissimplynoevidencetosuggesttheseitemscamefromanyotherenginemodelthantheRB211535,andthevastmajorityoftheseenginesareonlyusedononetypeofplanetheBoeing757.

Luckily,severalreadershavepointedoutanadditionalpicturethatwasreleasedasanexhibitduringtheZacariasMoussaouiterroristtrialin2006.Thisphoto,shownbelow,clearlyincludesasizeableandrelativelyintactportionofagasturbineengine.

Thisdebrisappearstocontaintworotatingenginediskswithpartoftheengine'scentralshaftprotrudingforward.Behindthetwodisksisanothercomponentcalledaframe.Framesarefixed,nonrotatingcomponentsthatprovideattachmentpointsholdingtheenginetogether.Thisdebrismustcomefromtheaftsectionofanenginegiventheshapeofthebladeattachmentpointsvisblealongthecircumferenceofthetworotatingdisks.Theseattachmentshaveahighlycambered,orcurved,bananalikeshapeindicativeofthebladesusedintheturbinesectionofajetengine.Thebladesusedonfanandcompressorstages,bycomparison,haveamuchstraighterandlesscurvedshape.

TheRB211535engineusedonthe757containsfiveturbinedisksthreelowpressureturbinesthatpowerthefan,oneintermediatepressureturbinedrivingtheintermediatepressurecompressors,andonehighpressureturbinethatturnsthehighpressurecompressors.Thedebrisshownherecontainstwoofthethreelowpressureturbinesandpossiblytheremainsofthethird.Theprotrudingshaftalsoappearstobecomposedoftwoseparateshaftsofdifferingdiameter.Asmallportionoftheinnershaft,fromtheengine'slowpressuresystem,appearstoprotrudefrominsideasecondlargerdiametershaftsurroundingit.Thislargerdiametershaftcorrespondstotheintermediatepressuresystemandwouldconnecttoanadditionalturbinediskthatisnolongerattached.
ThoughitisdifficulttoconclusivelyidentifythesecomponentsaspartofanRB211535enginewithoutbetterpicturesofanintactengineforcomparison,perhapsthemostidentifiableobjectshownindebrisistheaftframe.Alongthecircumferenceofthisframeareseveralfixedbladescalledstatorsthathelpguidetheairasitflowsthroughtheengine.Wecanseetheremainsoffourofthesestatorsinthephotooveraboutathirdofitsdiameter.
