Radial Engineering is pleased to announcethat Daniel Lanois, arguably the mosty influentialmusician-engineer-producer today, recentlyadded Radial direct boxes to his recordingarsenal.

In addition to his ground-breaking work withU2, Mr. Lanois has produced and engineeredworks by Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithfull, WillieNelson and Emmylou Harris.

Lanois had this to say about Radial: “

That prettywell sums it up! Thanks Dan!

It isnice to see great sounding, industrial-gradeequipment still being made today!”

The Radial ProAV2 is an over-achieving stereo passive DI designedto interface almost any high-impedance source such as DVDplayers, iPODs, computer sound cards

and musical instruments with lowimpedance mic inputs on a mixing console.

It is equipped with stereo ¼”, RCA, 3.5mminputs and balanced stereo XLR outputs. The

twin transformers convert the impedance, perform the balancing and provide isolation to help

eliminate troublesome ground loops. Perfect forinterfacing consumer audio with professional systems.

Over the past 5 years,Primacoustic has gained a solidfollowing in the home studiomarket with their range of open-cell acoustic panels. The panelsare typically glued to the wallsurface to treat primary andsecondary reflections. Thiseliminates standing waves andflutter echo. But sometimes, folksdo not want to permanently affixthe material to the walls. This iswhere Venice comes in.

Venice is an acoustic panelthat combines the standardPrimacoustic panels with acorrugated plastic backboard.Instead of gluing the panels to thewall, small discreet finishing nailsare used, therefore making it easyto pull the panels off and relocatethem with only minor refinishing.

Panel size is 52” tall x 12”wide. Effective from 500Hz andup. Venice panels come 4 to abox, pre-mounted and glued tothe backboards. Venice; thesimple acoustic system you caninstall in minutes.

The Radial SW8 Switcher is an 8-channel redundant backup switching interfacedesigned for live concert touring and stage shows that employ backing tracks as partof the sound production.

According to company president Peter Janis:The SW8 features two A-B sets of eight input channels with DB25 multipins or

¼” TRS inputs. Eight outputs are DB25 for balanced line-level or mic-level XLRs andtransformer-isolated to eliminate ground loops. A -10dB pad accommodates both+4dB or -10dB levels. Switching is done by depressing the front panel AB selector orauto-switching by recording a drone track and playing it into channel-1 of the SW8.Should the drone disappear, the SW8's alarm LED will illuminate, advising thetechnician a problem is at hand. The SW8 can also automatically toggle to the Binputs as soon as the drone track is lost. A link function accommodates larger 16 or24 track systems. All of this is housed in a single 19” rack space and powered by anexternal 15VDC power supply.

“Today it is common for bands tosupport their live performance with backing tracks as a means to provide theaudience with the type of production that they expect when they hear a record. Forinstance, when Queen performed Bohemian Rhapsody, backing tracks were used toprovide the vocal chorus. This is generally done using one or more stand-alonedigital recorders such as the ones made by Tascam, Alesis, or Radar. Unfortunately, even though these machines are very dependable in the safety of the studio, traveling night after night across the continent in a truck on bumpy roads inevitablytakes its toll and these machines invariably fail due to the inordinate abuse. Whendisaster occurs, a backup recorder is required. The Radial SW8 makes it possible toswitch to an alternate machine either automatically or manually should the need

arise. Before launching the SW8, we consulted a wide number of stage techniciansincluding techs that work with Chick Corea, The Eagles and U2. These guys know allof the ins and outs of road travel and helped us establish a common feature set. Theresult is the Radial SW8.”

ACOUSTICS 101 FOR STUDIOSJust like large commercial studios, home studios suffer

from acoustical interference that can make it more difficult tomix, especially when surrounded with the sound effects andambiance that now typifies today's stereo and 5.1 surround-sound mixes. In professional studios, the walls arestrategically treated with fabric-covered absorptive panels onthe sides, front, rear and sometimes on the ceilings.

The key to improving intelligibility (or our ability to discernwhat we want to hear and what we do not) is achieved byreducing unwanted reflections from hard wall surfaces. Whathappens is that the direct sound from the speaker arrives at thelistening position first and then the reflected sound arrives afew milliseconds later. These loud reflections cause the brain(human hearing mechanism) to have to ignore the secondsound, thus making us work hard for nothing. In studio, thiseffect is known to contribute to listening fatigue.

The solution is actually quite simple. Sound, especially inthe voice range, is directional. This means that by using simplevectors, you can strategically position acoustic panels wherethey will be most effective. By sitting in the various listeningpositions and simply moving a mirror on the wall to mark theareas where you see the speaker in the mirror, you willestablish the ideal locations on which to position your panels.

The most common surfaces to treat a project studio is onthe side walls in between the reference monitors and thelistening area. These are usually positioned waist-high tocontrol the upper section of the wall, which will be most proneto reflections. By leaving some open space on the wall, youretain some of the natural ambiance of the room, which willyield a more natural sound. Treating either the receive wall orthe transmit wall (behind the speakers) will also help eliminateflutter echo and standing waves that can further deteriorate thesound. This is particularly helpful in square and rectangularshaped rooms where the parallel surfaces work in tandem tocause long trailing echoes.

First, the sound coming from the speaker arrives directly atthe listening position. A few milliseconds later, the soundreflecting off the wall arrives. This forces the brain to workharder as we try to discern the two sounds.

To locate the best position for acoustic panels, slide a mirroracross the walls to see the speakers. This will determine theoptimum position for acoustic panel placement.

Once the area has been determined that needs treatment, simply affix Broadway panels to the wall using the impalingclips. The whole process can be done in minutes!

Germany's Microtech-Gefell is expandingits range of hand-made microphones with theGefell M950 wide cardioid. This little giantfeatures a full-sized 1” diaphragm mounted ona triangulated pedestal to eliminate smearfrom nearby body reflections.

The wide cardioid pattern is particularlyadvantageous when recording acousticinstruments where sound is produced frommultiple points. For example, the naturalsound of a guitar is made up of the sound fromthe pick, the resonance from the top, the soundprojecting from the sound hole and thesympathetic vibrations from the strings.

By capturing the whole instrument from asingle mic, the results are much morebalanced and defined tone. The directionalcharacteristic of the cardioid pattern aids tocontrol spill from other sources. In fact, onecould certainly qualify the M950 as a clevercombination of the natural sound of an omniwith the control of a cardioid.

AES exclusive! Primacoustic has launched a new rangeof bass traps in the form of easy to assemble do-it-yourself kits.

According to president Peter Janis:

Two models are offered: The Fulltrap™, which isapproximately 24” wide x 48” high and 8 inches deep and theHalftrap™, which is approximately 12” wide x 48” high and 6”deep. Both traps are made from high-density wood compositewith a black, easy-to-clean melamine finish. The frontabsorptive panel is made from 6lb per cubic foot high-densityencapsulated fiberglass. Behind the panel is a stretchedmembrane that acts as a low frequency resonator. The scienceis based on thermo-dynamic energy transfer, whereby soundpenetrating the Fulltrap causes the glass fibers and membraneto vibrate, which in turn convert the acoustic energy into heat.Estimated low frequency absorption will be between 65Hz and100Hz depending on the final outcome from tests.

Each kit contains the absorptive panel, resonantmembrane, the sides and top, easy-build hardware and wallmounting bracket. Building a Fulltrap™ takes about 15 minutesfrom start to finish!

“The challenge withbass traps is that for them to be effective, they must be large, deep and incorporate an air cavity where the bass can beabsorbed. Because of the size, they become expensive toship. For this reason, most acousticians tend to suggest built-in bass traps as part of the room design, which of course makesthem somewhat expensive. We looked at the huge successIkea is enjoying by providing easy-to-assemble kits that theaverage person can put together with only a screwdriver, stapler and hammer. We then applied this concept to creating abass trap and the result is our new Primacoustic Fulltrap™.”
