Materials:

Fabric requirements listed are to make the rows only, and do not cover making the rows

into other projects.

Cotton Fabric requirements for 12.5” x 30.5” row:

o ½ yard of black fabric for Astrologer blocks and other appliques.

o ½ yard of beige fabric for all other blocks.

o Fat Eighths of green and taupe for appliques.

o 5” x 5” piece silver for appliques.

Other equipment/notions:

Basic Instructions:

Cut fabric for blocks as instructed.

Trace all applique shapes for each block onto freezer paper and cut out.

Apply fusible web to the appropriate fabrics following manufacturer’s instructions.

To use the freezer paper templates, place them shiny side down on the front of the

fused fabric. Set the iron to a medium setting with no steam. Press down for a few

seconds until the freezer paper sticks.

Cut out all applique shapes from fabric for each block as instructed.

Do not trim the outer edges of the blocks until after appliqueing is complete. Some

shrinkage of the block may occur when appliqueing, and the blocks are oversized to

accommodate that possibility. After appliqueing, trim the blocks to indicated size.

Measure each block before trimming; the amount of fabric needing to be trimmed will

vary. For each block, I’ll provide the moral of the story with a link to the full fable, and an

illustration of the block. (The block illustrations are shown without seam allowance.) The

patterns for each block will be at the end of this document.

Constructing the Blocks:

The Rose & the Butterfly

“Do not expect constancy in others if you have none yourself.”

Begin with a 7.5” square of background fabric. Layer the applique pieces as shown in

the illustration and fuse in place.

Applique each piece down with matching thread.

Using three strands of the black embroidery floss, add the antennae onto the butterfly.

Use a back stitch for the antennae with French knots on the ends.

After appliqueing, trim the block to 6.5” x 6.5”.

The Goose & the Golden Egg

“Those who have plenty want more and so lose all they have.”

Begin with a 7.5” square of background fabric. Layer the applique pieces as shown in

the illustration and fuse in place, slightly overlapping the beak and leg with the goose

body.

Applique each piece down with matching thread.

After appliqueing, trim the block to 6.5” x 6.5”.

“In a pinch a good use of our wits may help us out.”

Begin with a 7.5” square of background fabric. Layer the applique pieces as shown in

the illustration and fuse in place, leaving a 1” border on all sides.

Applique each piece down with matching thread.

After appliqueing, trim the block to 6.5” x 6.5”.

The Hare & the Tortoise

“The race is not always to the swift.”

For the 12.5” x 30.5” row:

o Cut eight 7.5” x 4.5” pieces of background fabric, and two of each applique

shape. (Note that there are two hares and two tortoises, facing in the opposite

directions. You will need two of each.)

o Begin with one 7.5” x 4.5” piece of background fabric. Layer an applique piece as

shown in the illustration and fuse in place, leaving an even border on all sides.

o Applique each piece down with matching thread.

o After appliqueing, trim the block to 6.5” x 3.5”.

o Repeat for the other seven blocks.

For the 18.5” x 18.5” row:

o Cut two 7.5” x 4.5” pieces of background fabric, and one of each of the right-

facing applique shapes. Follow the above instructions for sewing.
