Program One (Saturday)2 hours, with one 20-minute interval

The first program sees a repertoire that could hardly be more romantic: Schubert's youthful Third and Bruckner's majestic Fourth Symphony. Schubert's delightful melodies and dances will cast light on the folkish origins of Bruckner's vast and awe-inspiring soundscapes, as Conductor Daniel Harding and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra reveal new perspectives and depths in their interpretation of these works.

Program Two (Friday & Sunday)2 hours 35 minutes, with two 15-minute intervals

In its second program, MCO will present one of the most extraordinary trilogies in all music: Mozart's three final symphonies. In a composing frenzy that lasted no more than six weeks, Mozart not only gave birth to the finest orchestral works of his career but also to music whose beauty, intense emotions and uncompromising artistic truth were unparalleled and trail-blazing. These symphonies lie at the core of the chamber orchestra repertoire and have played a pivotal part in the development of the sound and musical identity of this brilliant ensemble.

Founded 21 years ago by the musicians themselves, and akin to an orchestra of 45 soloists from over 20 nations, the superb Mahler Chamber Orchestra players describe themselves as a nomadic collective of passionate musicians who unite for specific tours across Europe and the world. The orchestra’s core repertoire lies in the Viennese Classical and early Romantic periods; it also plays contemporary works and world premieres.

Considered one of the most dynamic and successful orchestras on the international classical music scene, their acclaimed performances have been described as a transformative concert experiences by critics and audiences alike. MCO has its roots in the revered Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra whose members and leader, conductor Claudio Abbado, founded it in 1997 on the shared vision of being a free, democratic and international ensemble uniting to tour across Europe and the world.

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra

Daniel Harding

Conductor Laureate of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, he has performed with MCO for 20 years. He is also Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris and Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. A renowned opera conductor, his current projects include work with Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Teatro Regio di Torino, the Wiener Staatsoper as well as the Festival International d’Art Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence. He continues to work regularly with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in Munich, Filarmonica della Scala, Staatskapelle Dresden and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Alongside Abbado, the orchestra has received its most significant artistic impulses from Conductor Laureate, Simon Rattle protégé Daniel Harding, who at 42 years of age has been a successful conductor for half his life. Under his baton, the orchestra will perform two programs in Adelaide that showcase the ensemble’s outstanding virtuosity and fervently joyful music-making. Pianist Mitsuko Uchida, violinist Pekka Kuusisto and conductor Teodor Currentzis are current Artistic Partners who inspire and shape the orchestra in long-term collaborations. Concertmaster Matthew Truscott leads and directs the orchestra regularly in chamber orchestra repertoire.

The MCO’s sound is characterised by the chamber music style of ensemble playing among its alert and independent musical personalities, who bring a palpable collective musical intelligence and evenness of skill to whatever they play. In these glorious Australian performances you will enjoy

some of the most beautiful music the world can offer.

In recent years, the MCO’s major projects have included the award-winning Beethoven Journey with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, who led a complete Beethoven concerto cycle from the keyboard in international residences over four years, and the opera production Written on Skin, which the MCO premiered at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under the baton of composer George Benjamin, performed at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and toured, as a semi-staged concert production, to major European cities. In 2016, the MCO and Mitsuko Uchida launched a multiple-season partnership centred on Mozart’s piano concertos. During his three-year term as Artistic Advisor, Daniele Gatti led the MCO in a complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies. This focus on orchestral repertoire has now moved on to Schumann’s symphonic work.Mahler Chamber Orchestra last appeared in Australia at the Sydney Opera House in 2013.
