Dear Friends of Alliance,

We are extremely pleased to be with you again after a short break from our cultural events schedule. During this brief haitus, we took time to create new cultural themes and direction based on our past events and successes over the last several years.

Though our means are limited, we work to promote and encourage artistic exchange, to make our cultural network stronger, and provide cultural access to everyone. Our commitment to Tanzanian artists is fundamental to our mission. That is why we continue to focus on promoting the local cultural community through more frequent and carefully cultivated events.

So, what’s going on in September ?

A rich and varied programme which places the works of female artistic talents at the forefront. Sarah Markes, as well as French comedian Celine Laudet, will present respectively a painting exhibition and a one-woman-show. Vipaji Foundation will display the sculptural works of ten female artists selected amongst former University of Dar es Salaam Art

Students who undertook a workshop on metal-works back in 2010.

The world is large, but music shows how short the distance between us all can be. Driving rhythms and enchanting melodies will take the audience into a thrilling musical world created by TAZANO, a collaboration between top musicians from Tanzania and Norway (Guest of the Jahazi and Literature Festival - Zanzibar).

We believe Alliance française to be a key venue to present and promote new artistic talents, to meet and to discover with one another and to build awareness. That is why we are pleased to screen White and Black, a documentary dealing with albinism, which follows a successful exhibition on the same subject which we displayed last May. The director of White and Black will be in attendance and will be present for a Q&A with the audience following the screening of the film.

We hope you will enjoy our new program and we hope to see you very soon at Alliance.

WHITE and BLACKWritten by Jean-Francois Mean and Jon Kalina

Directed by Jean-Francois Mean

Thursday 6th September 2012

White and Black: Crimes of color is a Fifty Eight (58) minute documentary about albinism, an age-old African taboo. In the East African region ten times more people have albinism than in North America and Europe.

One person in 2000 has albinism. In Tanzania and parts of East Africa certain corrupt healers traffic in the body parts of persons with albinism (PWA).

They sell them for magical potions and amulets to anyone who will dare to use them and prey upon deep-seated and long-standing prejudices and superstitions. Vicky Ntetema former BBC Tanzania Bureau Chief, investigates the murders of PWA sweeping the country. She takes us into the lives of those terrorized by this scourge and we experience through their own eyes their fear and their courage.

The movie will be followed by a discussion with the documentary director

Bahia Benmahmoud, a free-spirited young woman, has a particular way of seeing political engagement, as she doesn’t hesitate to sleep with those who don’t agree with her to convert them to her cause - which is a lot of people, as all right-leaning people are concerned. Generally, it works pretty well. Until the day she meets Arthur Martin, a discreet forty-something who doesn’t like taking risks. She imagines that with a name like that, he’s got to be slightly fascist. But names are deceitful and appearances deceiving...

Tazano is the result of a partnership between five Tanzanian and Norwegian musicians. Driving rhythms and enchanting melodies take the audience into a thrilling musical world created by top musicians from Tanzania and Norway. Never short of imagination, they bring you on a journey where African drums are beating in fjords and on mountains on the very Northern edge of the world. The world is large, but music shows how short the distance from man to man can be.

The concert is organized by the NOTA-project, which is a mutual, inter-cultural collaboration-promoting network involving TaSUBa (Taasisi ya Sanaa na Utamaduni Bagamoyo), Stavanger Municipality through Stavanger School of Culture (SSC) and the University of Stavanger (UiS), Department of Music and Dance. The NOTA-project is financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Norwegian Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

Painting ExhibitionBy Sarah Markes

Tuesday 18th September 2012

Sarah Markes has spent much of the last few years exploring and illustrating Dar es Salaam. Initially inspired to document the city’s street life in the face of rapid urban development and demolition of many buildings in the city centre, this exhibition now focusses more on the wilder side of Dar es Salaam.

The series of drawings and paintings celebrates some of the flora and fauna to be found in and around the city’s green spaces coconut palms lining the shore, majestic fish eagles, butterflies caught on the sea breeze and flowers lurking along the roadsides.

This exhibition of drawings and paintings celebrates the wilder side of Dar es Salaam the flora and fauna to be found in and around the city’s green spaces. It also includes a selection of drawings from the ‘street level’ project, depicting the city’s architecture and street life.

One on stage. Four monologues for four women, tied together by murder. Each of them has killed a man and tells us, in her own way, that very moment when everything changes. Brutally or methodically.

One single loneliness. Four women facing their murders justify themselves Women’s lives, kind-of-odd personalities. They make us smile. They touch us .. because they were waiting to be loved ... to death.

"GADJO DILO"(France / Romania 1997)

Alliance Upstairs6.30pm - 8.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Friday 28th September 2012

Stéphane, a young French man from Paris, travels to Romania. He is looking for the singer Nora Luca, whom his father had heard all the time before his death. Wandering along a frozen road, he meets old Isidore, a member of the Roma (Gypsy) and tells him of Nora Luca. Isidore seems to understand and takes him to his village. Stéphane believes that Isidore will take him to Nora Luca when the time has come. So, he lives in the Roma village for several months. The other inhabitants dislike him at first (as he comes from those who call them thieves and attack their folks) but as they get to know him better, they grow to like him. In summer, the ice between him and beautiful Sabina finally cracks, and as she is able to translate between the Roma and him, Stéphane finds out that nobody ever understood a thing that he had said.Director: Tony Gatlif

Hailed by Voici as «a distant descendant of Dorothy Parker,» prize-winning Anna Gavalda has caused an international sensation with this dazzling collection of short stories selling over 700,000 copies in her native France. With arresting naturalism, a lively variety of perspectives, Gavalda writes simply - and beautifully- of human beings longing to connect. Gavalda has a knack for capturing our inner as well as our outer dialogues with perfect pitch, provoking reflection, pain, and laughter in equal measure. The stories in I Wish Someone Were Waiting for Me Somewhere are as wicked as they are insightful, as stylish as they are sparse, as fiercely unsentimental as they are emotionally rough

“In the year 2052, the world depends entirely on electricity so when the electrical phenomenon unexpectedly disappears, a lot of problems happen. François Deschamps, an engineer specialized in farming, leaves Paris with ten companions and two horses with the hope to reach the south of France. Cholera, huge forest fires and looters will be the main enemies of the group before Deschamps is at last able to create a new rural society depending on people’s work and not on mechanical energy.”

This volume is the first part of a collection of 75 stories directly from the oral tradition in Tanzania. The stories presented in a bilingual version all contain a series of tests and a moral dimension. These little entertainment are all illustrations of a heritage now threatened.
