NEWSLETTER ISSUE 92

Message of the Director

Dear Colleagues and Partners,

We kicked off the week with an extraordinary Africa Youth Conference, discussing political participation, leadership and entrepreneurship of Arica’s Youth. Gathering more than 300

participants, UNESCO followed the Conference on Twitter, trending #AfricaYouthConf2018 and

hosting a panel on Youth- Led Social Enterprises, discussing ways to open opportunities for employment and alternative solutions to unemployment, by tapping into the potentials and energy

of Young People. UNESCO also showcased its work on Youth and Sports, Youth and Policies and Youth and Entrepreneurship, emphasizing the importance of training young people in

entrepreneurial and soft skills, for them to be able to contribute to their societies by being global

and responsible citizens.

We also celebrated United Nations Day with a Social Media Campaign #UNPeaceinEasternAfrica, where the UNESCO Family joined efforts in spreading the messages

of international peace, diplomacy, security and sustainable development goals that we all strive to

achieve by 2030. The online campaign was a firm reminder of our belonging to the same UN Family, delivering as One, but never forgetting our mandate of Instilling Peace in the Minds of Men

and Women, through our programmes on Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture and Communication and Information.

On 26th October we presented a keynote address at the First Annual International Conference on Research and Innovation in Education with the theme: Education Reforms: Towards Achieving the

Sustainable Development, convened at the University of Nairobi. This conference, organized by the University of Nairobi in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, gathered

together academics and researchers from all over Africa and beyond to deliberate on the issues surrounding education reforms, research and innovation.

To mark the International Day to end impunity for crimes against journalists (IDEI), on 2 November, I will be in Arusha, Tanzania, to attend the Eastern Africa Conference on the Safety of

Journalists. In parallel, an online social media campaign #TruthNeverDies, will aim to engage public opinion and raise awareness of the situation for journalists around the world. The situation

where hundreds of journalists have been assassinated for wanting to tell a story. A story of

corruption, trafficking or violence. A story that causes a stir.

My wish for this day is for Governments to get to know the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the issue of Impunity, and to implement it globally, regionally and nationally, to

create a safe and free environment for journalists and media workers to inform us.

Finally, as a follow-up to the Inter-regional meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO, held

in Diani (Kenya) last June, the National Commissions of the Eastern Africa Region, in collaboration with the German National Commission for UNESCO, will gather in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) from 1

to 3 November 2018, for a sub-regional workshop. Topics of the exchange will be: good governance, promoting visibility of the National Commissions, sharing of Diani

experience, cooperation of Headquarters and Field Offices with National Commissions.

I wish you a productive week ahead, promoting freedom of expression and information!

Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta

Celebrations of UN Day

The United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry

into force in 1945 of the United Nations Charter. With the

ratification of this founding document by the majority of its

signatories, including the five permanent members of the

Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24

October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.

In Kenya, an Africa Youth Conference took place, from 23 to

25 October 2018, jointly organized by the UN Family in Kenya

(UN Women, UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Environment,

UNIC Nairobi) and with Forum for African Women Educationalists

(FAWE) and YMCA Africa Alliance. Youth champions from all corners of Africa gathered to discuss

through Social Entrepreneurship; Youth Engagement in Governance/Political Participation

Leadership and Decision-Making by Young Women; Youth Action in preventing violence and other

harmful practice against young women and girls; and showcasing and documenting Youth-Led

social innovation addressing development challenges facing youth in Africa.

UNESCO contributed by bringing on board young champions- young engineers, innovators and

educators- from 11 countries- Côte D’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of

Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda- to

engage in conversations and make their voices and their needs heard, for the Africa they want,

tackling both the 7 Aspirations of Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Agenda 2030.

An exhibition of the work of the UN agencies in the compound in Kenya took place, showcasing

what UNESCO does in Youth and Sports, Youth and Entrepreneurship and Youth Policies.

On UN Day- 24 October- a panel moderated by UNESCO Regional

Office for Eastern Africa, looked at opportunities and

challenges for youth employment, by creating the pathway

for success in Youth Led Enterprise and Business in

industry. Business entrepreneurs and founders of social

business from Egypt, Nigeria and Uganda shared their

experiences in using technology, innovation, creativity, networks

to turn their business ideas into profitable and socially

responsible enterprises.

"The Future is inside of you"- Mr. Abdul Rahman Lamin, Social

and Human Sciences Programme Specialist at UNESCO Regional

Office for Eastern Africa highlighted, as moderator of the panel- "you need to unleash your

potentials and create responsible businesses that can solve issues in your communities and can

provide more learning, training and professional opportunities for people" he continued. "You are

all Leaders of tomorrow, starting from today".

To move forward, we need to share knowledge, using

our collective intelligence to learn from one another and

tackle Africa's challenges. The key takeaways from the

conference stressed the importance of pitching,

marketing and storytelling, to tell the African positive

stories from the young generations and young

entrepreneurs's perspectives. Break gender

stereotypes and end discrimination against young

girls and women, allowing them to occupy a space in

leadership and political positions for the betterment of

countries. Investing in continuous learning, in soft-

skills- such as self-confidence, believe in one selves and

leadership skills, to keep on growing and fulfilling dreams

and visions.

In the spirit of sports, of values of integrity, endurance and courage, the UN Person of the Year

2018 was awarded on United Nations Day, to Mr. Eliud Kipchoge, Kenyan marathoner and World

Record holder 2:01:39, for his accomplishments involving initiative, integrity, human endurance

and courage, his work on raising-awareness on challenges and issues related to HIV/AIDS in

Kenya and the difficulties 65 % of Kenya's population- the youth- face in their quest to be

productive and responsible global citizens.

Training of students on digital literacy skills

24 to 26 October 2018

Dar es Salaam & Kisarawe Districts, Tanzania

About 200 young secondary school girls

in Dar es Salaam and Kisarawe district

underwent a training in coding skills

and application development as part of

the UNESCO Youth Mobile Initiative

implementation in Tanzania.

The 200 students, coming from

Jamhuri, Gerezani, Dar es Salaam and

Benjamin Mkapa secondary schools in

Dar es Salaam, Chazinge and Kimani secondary schools in Kisarawe district, will become part of

over 2,489 young people engaged in Tanzania over the past two years to learn digital skills for

development. The goal is to reach youth who would otherwise not have access to computers and

ICT in their schools or homes with the aim to create a spark and inspire the girls to consider

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and computer science as their subjects

of preference on their academic and career paths. The training sessions will also expose the girls to

different existing programs, hubs and creative spaces that they can use to grow their coding skills

and get follow-up support in the field.

UNESCO is implementing the Youth Mobile Initiative with a view to empower youth with the high-

level skills and confidence to create mobile apps that are locally relevant and contribute to the

reduction of chronic youth unemployment. UNESCO has implemented Youth Mobile projects in

more than 25 countries worldwide reaching thousands of young women and men.
