Jamestown
Jamestown was the 1st permanent English settlement in America.
Long ago, people from England came to America to live.
These people were called English Settlers.
The people wanted to make money for England.
The settlers were looking for gold, silver, and other resources that would
make money for England.
Setting up a place to live was really hard. They had trouble finding fresh
water and growing food.
It was also very easy to get sick.
The men had to learn a lot of find new ways to do things. One thing that
helped, was finding a crop that was valuable to grow. This crop is called
Tobacco.
Around the same time, people started capturing people from Africa and
bringing them to America to work as slaves.
The men needed help to grow the tobacco. They wanted to grow as
much as possible so that they could make a lot of money.
The arrival of Africans to Jamestown made it possible for people who lived
there to plant large tobacco farms. Now, they could make lots of money.
After many years of setting up a place to live, the settlers had learned how to
take care of themselves and make money pretty well.
There was still something very important that was missing.
Jamestown needed families, not just men.
In 1620, women came over from England to marry the men who lived in
Jamestown and start families.
The arrival of Africans and women to Jamestown is important because they helped make the colony successful for
years to come.
