AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

2017‒2018

Online RegistrationRegistration for Varsity and Middle School Sports begins at 9:00 a.m. Monday the 4th of September. Registration for all other activities begins at 9:00 a.m. Monday, September 18th, and closes at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 29th. Registration is completed online by accessing the ASM Parent Portal and following the After-School Activities registration link. All activities must be paid for at the time of registration in order to reserve a space. Online payments can be made with a credit card or PayPal account.

Varsity and Middle School Sports Leagues begin the week of September 11th and end the week of May 21st. All other activities begin the week of October 16th and end the week of May 14th.

* Participants in Spring Sports Season will need to provide their own transportation in the last week of practices as the late bus service ends May 17th. **All students enrolling in Active Sports will need to provide a certificate of good health.

Behavioral ExpectationsThe ASA programs are viewed as an extension of the curricular day. Students in the ASA programs will need to adhere to ASM behavioral policies and procedures. Students who do not manage their behavior appropriately during sessions will be invited to “not attend” future sessions without a refund.

TransportationUse of the late bus service is available, at no additional cost, to those students who are already subscribed to the full bus service (morning and afternoon) or the one-way afternoon service. Students not subscribed to the full service (morning and afternoon) or the one-way afternoon service may pay an additional fee (noted on the activity listing) to ride the late bus at the time of registration for the after-school activity.

The Late Bus service begins September 11th to accommodate Varsity and Middle School Sports Leagues. Late bus service for other after-school programs will begin October 16, 2017 and end May 17, 2018. The Late bus service is different from the regular bus service. It is designed to get students to areas of the city where they can more easily take public transportation or be picked up by parents. The After-School stops are generally different from the regular day service stops. On the last page there is a list of the Late Bus stops determined by the school.

When registering online be sure to indicate the bus number and precise stop where your son or daughter will get off the bus. To ensure student safety, if there is not an adult at the designated bus stop, the bus monitors will not allow students younger than 12 years of age off the bus and they will be brought back to the school for subsequent collection by a parent. Students older than 12 years will be allowed to get off the buses and go home independently only if a written authorization is received from both of the parents at the beginning of the school year. Students older than 12 years who are already authorized by the parents to get off the bus and go home independently will also be allowed to accompany their younger siblings if a waiver of responsibility is signed by both parents.

If you prefer to pick your child up at ASM, you can do so beginning at 5:20 p.m., and absolutely no later than 5:30 p.m.

RefundsA refund is only given when an activity is canceled due to insufficient numbers. Most activities require a minimum of 8 students. Refunds are not given when a student chooses to drop out of an activity at any time during the year.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Joseph Leonetti at [email protected]. For urgent matters concerning After-School Activities please call +(39) 02 53000020.

Free tokens for the hair dryers will be available. We ask that parents teach the necessary changing skills at home.

Students will be chaperoned back to school by our staff to be picked up by parents or to take the bus home. Parents are not to pick up their children at the pool.

People have been climbing for… well, forever. Today, the difference is we can climb and be completely safe. Technology has changed this activity into an amazing sport, which harmonizes strength, agility, balance and problem-solving skills. It is one of the few sports that demands good control and strong communication between the body, the mind and emotions.

The aim of this club is focused on having fun with mental and physical challenges while becoming experts in equipment and safety. You will learn all there is to know about knots, carabiners, quick-draws and ATCs.

ASM will provide the basic equipment (harness, rope, carabiners…) but if you plan on buying your own (advised), we will be more than happy to help you choose a harness, shoes or chalk bag that is right for you.

Come and learn how to:● Climb on top rope using a harness and a rope ● Belay: insure safe ascent and descent● Boulder: technical climbing up to 3 meters● Spot: insure the boulderer’s safety at all time

Yoga is an ancient science that helps us develop flexibility and strength in our bodies and happiness and peace in our mind.

Yoga is a practice and philosophy that teaches us that happiness is our natural state. When the body and the mind are out of balance, we do not feel this happiness. With the help of yoga poses, breathing exercises and focusing within, we bring back this harmony to our body and mind, and come back to this natural state of happiness.

Stop-motion animation is the process of taking multiple pictures of a still object and then compiling them into a movie sequence to see still objects come to life. In this exciting course students will have the opportunity to push their creativity to the limits by learning how to animate using lego, modeling clay, paper or toys. Students will be able to recreate their favorite scenes from movies like Minions, Frozen and Star Wars.

Not only does this teach the fundamentals of a design process (storyboarding, building characters and backdrops) but also the skills required to create, save and digitally share stop-motion animated movies. Film screening at the end of the course will demonstrate each student's wonderful creations.

All students in grades 2-3 are welcome to participate. No experience necessary.

Harry Potter Club is an after-school activity designed for anyone who enjoys one of the most popular children’s series of all time.

We’ll spend our time on all things Harry Potter: making our own magic wands, Marauder’s Maps, playing Quidditch, and cooking Hogwarts specialties such as Rock Cakes and Pumpkin Juice!

We’ll also discuss some of the themes present throughout the series, including friendship, making choices, bullying, and bravery.

Through technology challenges the students will program and play their own computer games, create interactive stories, work with squishy circuits, Makey-Makey or Little Bits electronics. While doing all of this, students will build their ability to identify and solve problems, think logically and creatively and collaborate with each other.

We will also participate in the Hour of Code. No previous coding or electronics experience is necessary. Come join the fun and program the computers to work for you!

Model United NationsThe ASM award-winning Model United Nations club offers students an opportunity to understand global issues, develop high-level public speaking and practice real leadership skills. Students learn about different countries, travel the world and make new social networks, but the program does require some commitment.

The club meets Wednesday afternoons. Students dress in formal business attire for the entire day, fitting the dress code of the United Nations. There are at least four potential travel opportunities for conferences in the 2017-2018 school year, including: Berlin, Paris, Milan, Doha and possibly another conference.

Students generally attend one (or more) of these conferences, in addition to planning a yearly conference hosted locally at ASM. Our students are among the most successful in the world, helping to lead some foreign conferences and being awarded at others. These trips, which are not mandatory, can cost 100-1000 Euros, and include travel and tuition. Involvement in MUN is very attractive to universities, as it shows leadership, problem solving, academic curiosity, and language skills. To maintain a strong program, attendance and participation at weekly meetings is mandatory.

Italian Math Prep for Terza Media Exam

Taught by International Chess Master Matteo Zoldan. These sessions will be interactive and fun, allowing students who have no knowledge of the game (this is a beginner’s course) but the desire to discover and learn how to play one of the oldest games in the world.

Chess, sport par excellence of the mind, is a game, a science, an art and a universal language that can unite the world and different generations, but there is scope for much, much more… chess is a sport in which young players can express their passions within a frame of well-defined rules and limits. Each class will have a theoretical moment where students will learn the game and then a moment to play with friends.

At the end of the course there will be a tournament with medals for the first classified (gold, silver, bronze) and also for all other participants.

Students will be part of the ASM team, which will play in the Milan Students’ Chess Champs finals!
