AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Please find a survey with this newsletter which will be used to determine support for such a service if it was introduced. The combined schools service will be run under the auspices of Sherpa Kids Australia, a nationwide provider of before and after school care services. CLASS NEWS – Year 4 Hello parents and carers. I am Mrs Melissa Jones and I am happy to be teaching Year 4 for the remainder of the year. Year 4 have been busy settling into their new routines and are starting to take leaps into new learning areas. In Science, students are studying Beneath our Feet, which is the study of rocks and soil. Throughout the term, we will be conducting experiments and looking closely at soil and rock types. The students and I are having a fantastic time delving into our reading group sessions. This gives me the opportunity to engage in all students reading. Many students have moved up reading levels already. Good work Year 4! I am so eager to see how Year 4 develop throughout the remainder of the year!

SCIENCE! SPELLING BEE FINALS Congratulations to students who competed in the Spelling Bee Finals held last Wednesday August 9th. The crowd was ‘buzzing’ with excitement as students listened intently to words that became more difficult as the competition progressed. Participants correctly spelt some difficult words including ‘ballet’ and ‘impediment’. All of the finalists worked incredibly hard to prepare themselves for this spelling challenge and every competitor should be proud of their achievements. Thank you to those families and community members who were able to join us for this event.

BOOK WEEK Book Week 2017 is just around the corner and to celebrate, Denman Public School has some exciting competitions planned. Students and their families are encouraged to participate and join the fun. The theme for Book Week 2017 is ‘Escape to Everywhere’. We would love to see YOUR favourite place to escape when you like to read. Over the next few weeks we will update our Facebook page with photos received from students and their families reading in their very own ‘Place to Escape’. You can email your photos to [email protected] We look forward to seeing your entries. There will be some great prizes on offer which will be presented at our Book Week Assembly on Thursday August 31st.

Mrs Whiteman has some exciting Book Week activities ready for students in the Library to participate in over the coming weeks. Our Book Fair will be held in Week 7. Did you know that by supporting our Book Fair, Denman Public School receives valuable funds from Scholastic Australia to help Mrs Whiteman provide new and exciting material for students to borrow from the Library each week. There is an interesting and diverse range of books available at our Book Fair this year – parents are welcome to attend

Which Book Would You Like To Read?

SPORTS REPORT Zone Athletics Congratulations and well done to the 38 students who participated in the Zone Athletics Carnival last Friday in Singleton. All students demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and gave their absolute best effort in all the events they participated in. We are still waiting for the official results of the carnival to be sent through at this stage. All athletes who are successful in progressing to the regional carnival will be notified as soon as possible and a full report will be published in next week’s newsletter. Thank you to the parents who came down and cheered on our school.

NETBALL GALA DAY Good luck to all students participating in the St. Catherine’s netball gala day this Friday at Singleton. This is a great opportunity for both girls and boys to participate in an event promoting fun and fitness. I’m sure we will have a fantastic day! Photos to come next week…

Can anyone recognise where Isla is?

That hat looks quite familiar!

Where are you reading Lucas?

Even Mrs Brown’s dog is reading!

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO ESCAPE?

Dynamite Fitness This term, all primary classes (Years 3-6) will participate in Dynamite Fitness workshops with Bridget Quinn. The program is $5 per student, only $1 per week. Please make sure you remember your hat and a drink bottle every Friday and be prepared to work up a sweat! Legends Shield Next Wednesday August 23rd, 11 students from years 5 and 6 will travel to Sydney to participate in the Legends Shield Rugby League Carnival. After the seven-a-side rugby league team won the Steve Simpson Shield earlier in the year, the side was selected to compete at state level competition. This is a huge achievement and we wish the team all the very best. Dennis Pitt needs your help From October 3rd to 14th, Dennis, our athletics coaching expert, is travelling to Tonga to mentor underprivileged children in athletics. While visiting these kids he would like to be able to donate sports equipment. Please like ‘Spectrum Sports Sciences’ Facebook page for more information and message him directly if you would like to contribute. P & C CONTRIBUTION

Denman Public School has recently received some exciting new additions to the primary play equipment. Thanks to the generous support of our P&C Association we have a new shade shelter, footpath and bubbler taps for students to utilise.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN We are excited to be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program this year. You can help our school by collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Points when you shop at Woolworths between Wednesday July 26th and Tuesday 19th September 2017. We will redeem these points for fantastic educational resources for our school. For every $10 spent at Woolworths you will receive a Woolworths Earn & Learn Point. Pop them onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Points Sheet and when completed, bring it to school and drop into the collection box located in the school office. Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheets are available at Woolworths stores, and we also have some available at school. We have previously redeemed points to purchase construction toys for the infants classrooms. Points can be redeemed for resources for many areas of the curriculum including Mathematics, English, Science, Creative Arts, sporting equipment, library supplies and more. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. If you have any questions, please contact the school
