PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Family YMCA at Tarrytown, a not for profit charitable organization, is offering an afterschool enrichment program to the students at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School on-site from

dismissal until 4:30 pm. It is mandatory that participants remain in the school at dismissal; no exceptions! The first part of the program (2:25 -3:30) will be time for attendance, snack (parents must provide), homework and game time. Students will then be escorted by our staff to

their respective enrichment class in the school. Specialized enrichment classes will be from 3:30-4:30. Parents must come into the school to pick up their children @ 4:30.* You will be

PAYMENT

The YMCA accepts the following types of payment: Credit Cards (VISA, MasterCard, & American Express). Please do not send cash. DATES

Registration: September 17th – September 21st (NOTE: Registration forms will not be accepted until the dates listed above; they will be

processed in the order they are received.)

Change Days: September 27th & 28th Confirmation E-Mail: October 8th – 12th

Please do not call prior to the confirmation dates.

FINANCIAL AID Through the generosity of our donors, the Family YMCA at Tarrytown is pleased to offer financial

aid opportunities to income-qualified families and individuals. For more information, please contact Melissa Weaver at (914) 631-4807, x 106.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS At times instructors cancel classes due to illnesses or an unforeseen event. Every effort will be

made to provide a sub that is competent in the area of the class that is being offered. If a sub cannot be found we will either provide a group games class or place children in an existing class

of their choice. ABSENCES

If your child WILL NOT be attending the After-School Enrichment Program on a particular day, but will be in school, you MUST send in a note addressed to the After-School Program

Coordinator, Jean Giordano. PICK-UP PROCEDURE (4:30pm)

For safety reasons, children will not be excused from the program until their parent or guardian signs them out. There is NO BUS SERVICE AVAILABLE. All children must be picked up

PROMPTLY at 4:30 pm. Please enter the lobby near the Welcome Center at pick-up time, so that you can check the location of your child’s class. Classroom locations are subject to change. Chronic lateness for pick-up time may be grounds for dismissal from the program

and/or you may be subject to a late fee of $1 per minute per child.

IMPORTANT: IF SOMEONE OTHER THAN A PARENT/GUARDIAN/ REGULAR BABYSITTER WILL BE PICKING UP YOUR CHILD FROM THE PROGRAM, YOU MUST SEND

A NOTE STATING THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO WILL BE PICKING UP YOUR CHILD. FOR YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY, YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE RELEASED TO ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL UNLESS YOU HAVE SENT IN A NOTE IN WRITING.

INCLEMENT WEATHER If the school is closed or there is an early dismissal due to inclement weather, the program will

be canceled. If there is not an early dismissal, but weather conditions are hazardous, the school district may cancel all after-school activities. If this is the case, it is the parent’s responsibility to call the school at 914- 271-5184 to find out if the program is canceled. The school district will not

be able to call each parent individually. If the program has been canceled, all children will be sent home via his/her regular after-school transportation. There will be only one make-up date per class day for inclement weather.

WITHDRAWALS/CHANGES/DISMISSAL

Please note that classes are subject to change. Classes need to meet minimum enrollment figures in order to run. If there is not adequate sign-up for a class, students will be encouraged to try another class. There will be no refunds if you withdraw your child from the class once it

has begun. After registration is complete, your child will not be permitted to switch to another class.

If your child’s behavior is disruptive, you will be contacted early on, so that we can work together to find a solution. Continuous disruptive behavior will be grounds for dismissal from the

program.

REFUNDS Program Fees are refunded for requests made up to one week prior to the first day of classes,

for classes the YMCA cancels, and for documented medical reasons. Except in cases where the YMCA cancels a class, a $10 processing fee is charged for all refunds. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR WEATHER-RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS.

It is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school that their child will be attending the Y Enrichment Program. Please us the attached notification form for CET.

LET’S WORK AND PLAY WITH CLAY: Grades 1-2

Instructor: Brie Lafuente

Explore clay through patterns and textures using your hands and simple

objects! Students will be introduced to different techniques for shaping the clay

– pinching-coiling-modeling as they create several functional objects and

sculptures out of clay. The clay will be painted or glazed and fired in the kiln,

ready to take home and enjoy

LET'S KNIT! Grades 1-4 Instructor: Lori Cohen Knitting is a great hobby for kids. Students will

learn the basics of knitting as they create several simple accessories of their choice. We

will learn about all kinds of yarns and the tools knitters use. Kids will also decorate their own knitting bag and make their own knitting

needles. They will try a ball winder, knitting machine and more. Students who already have

some knitting experience will learn new skills. Kids will have fun while they learn to love knitting!

CRAZY CHEMISTRY: Grades K-3

Instructor: Mad Science

Come and spark imaginative learning with

some Mad chemistry. Watch as we combine elements and make them fizz, crackle and

change color! We’ll delve into molecules

and chemical reactions that produce light, gas and even slime. Some of the weekly

topics in this session include :Lab Works, Junior Reactors, p.H. Phactor, Slime Time,

The Glow Show, Dry Ice Capades, Icky Sticky Stuff, Chemistry Corner, The Mystery

of Chem and Kitchen Chemistry

DANCE: Grades K-2

Instructor: Y Dance The dance class will be an exciting

introduction to dance! Where the students will be learning all styles which includes ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical and hip hop.

TUESDAY CLASSES

FUN WITH CLAY Grades 3-4

Instructor: Brie Lafuente Get your hands dirty and your creativity

rolling while you create several functional objects and sculptures out of clay.

Students will learn techniques to create forms including pinching, coil and slab

work as well as using tools to add texture or detail. Add color using glaze and/or

paint. Make textures, make friends, and make art from clay!

DRAWING AND PAINTING WHAT WE SEE

Grades 2-4 Instructor: Hillary Hostetler

This class will teach observational drawing and painting for kids. We will learn how to

observe closely and record what we see. Using a variety of art materials such as pencil,

oil pastel, pen and ink, watercolor paints, charcoal and more: we will draw leaves, fruit, stuffed animals, toys, people and pets. There

will also be a warm up or wind down and “free time” in each class.

PRE DESTINATION IMAGINATION: Grades 2-4 Instructor: Nicole Miller

Get prepared to participate in one of Croton

Schools' most exciting programs! DESTINATION IMAGINATION is an International creativity

problem solving competition for students in grades 5-12. Children in 'Pre-DI' will learn team building skills and hone their creative and critical

thinking skills while focusing on ‘Instant Challenges.' An Instant Challenge is a problem or

puzzle that the team must solve immediately without advance preparation. The unrehearsed solutions are judged for their creativity,

teamwork and ingenuity. For example, build a house out of marshmallows and straws or

produce and perform a television commercial about a new grass-flavored soda - in just four minutes!

NOTE: SINCE PRE DI IS A UNIQUE CLASS, WE

ASK THAT IF YOUR CHILD HAS ALREADY TAKEN THIS CLASS THEY TRY SOMETHING ELSE SO

THAT THEY ARE NOT BORED OR INFLUENCE THE

We believe that kids learn best when they truly experience a new language in a fun and

creative way. With this in mind, we've developed a unique curriculum that

incorporates play, singing, movement, and dance, to help kids master Spanish in a

completely natural manner.

home with a beautiful 8x8 book of memories that you can enjoy forever!

FUN WITH ORIGAMI ART: Grades 1-3

Instructor: Kazuko

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding, and it transforms a sheet of

square paper into a fun 3D object. It helps develop hand-eye coordination &

fine motor skills and teaches children to follow directions. In this class students

will learn how to make pet animals and create their habitats or little houses. They

will also make other fun objects like a spinning toy, a haunted house, and a

jumping frog game. It’s almost like magic

when you turn a sheet of paper into fun figures! Come and discover the afternoon

fun of Origami art!!

Fun with Science: Think like a Scientist (grades 2-4)

Science is definitely fun in this class with

exciting experiments like creating “slime” and games designed to help you think like a

scientist. We will use our minds along with our imagination to explore and experiment

while employing scientific methods understand our results.

SOCCER: Grades K-1 Instructor: Lisa Fitzgerald

Teach soccer skills: ball control, dribbling,

passing, shooting, how to be a team player and follow directions. Players learn

best when having fun.

INTRO TO ACTING: Grades 2-4 Instructor: Sione Owen

Just as it sounds: the ideal opportunity to “give it a try” or to reinforce fundamental acting

techniques. This course will introduce you to acting in a supportive and very creative

atmosphere. Through the use of theatre games and improvisation, students will discover that

the art of acting involves the imagination, taking chances, and FUN!

MAGIC MASTERS: Grades 2-3

Instructor: Hobby Quest

Abracadabra! You will be transformed when you learn to perform all new tricks

this fall. The Disappearing Deck, 3 Magic Wands and Coin Increasing Bag are just a

few of the astounding tricks you will learn during this exciting program. You will

experience amazing fun when you learn the secrets of these jaw-dropping illusions.

Once you’ve transformed into a Magical Master, you’ll get to share your new skills

with friends and family in a real magic

show at your school…and keep all the tricks!

AIRPLANE BUILDERS Grades 1-3

Instructor: Hobby Quest

Can you build them? Yes, you can! UFO, Sky

Rocket, and Arrow Quest are just a few of the many airplane models you’ll get to build

in this STEM-focused program. Learn what makes your plane lift off and continue to fly,

and then build some more. But don’t let the physics fool you! You’ll learn a great deal,

while having an amazing time flying all the models.
