A Word from the Publisher

During a time of year when most people are celebrating the birth of Christ, we join a family who survived a house !re but lost everything. Mike & Sharon, along with their teenage son, Jacob, each respond di#erently to the tragedy. We see that, even though things look bleak from an earthly standpoint, God is still in control, and He uses even these di$culties to bring glory to Himself.

%is program has eleven songs for choir. Two of the songs have a female solo who can also be the same person who plays Sharon in the program. It is written for four-part choir with some optional parts here and there. With a simple cast of four actors, this program can be done as a complete drama or in readers’ theater format. %e program length is approximately 45 minutes.

Faith in God is not only our hope of salvation; it is our strength and power every day of our lives. As the pastor in the play says, “God holds our hands so that we have the strength to hold the hands of others.” My prayer is that the faith of believers will be strengthened from this program that shows that God is in control of everything. May your faith grow as you participate in this cantata!

After the FireProgram Script

CAST OF CHARACTERS

MIKE: Married to Sharon, father to Jacob

SHARON: Married to Mike, mother to Jacob

JACOB: Only child, 17-year old

PASTOR RAY: Family pastor

SETTING:

December 31. Up North.

It's very cold. A difficult time of year to lose their home.

SONG: Let His Praises Ring!

SCENE ONE

(It is a very bare room. Jacob is in it alone. It is Christmas, but you wouldn’t know it. Jacob is in high school, 17 years old. He is in some kind of pajamas. There is a table, a lamp, and a small radio. We hear a Christ-mas song, soft and low. Jacob listens, and then suddently, he takes off a slipper and hurls it at the radio. There is a commotion. Sharon enters on crutches with bandaged feet.)

Sharon: (Concerned) Jacob? Are you okay?

Jacob: (Irritated) I’m fine!

Sharon: Okay. It just sounded like. . .

Jacob: I said I’m fine!

Sharon: (Pausing) There’s a casserole out here in the kitchen if you. . .

Jacob: I’m not hungry.

Sharon: You have to be, Jacob. You didn’t eat lunch.

Jacob: I don’t want to eat. . . especially not another casserole!

Sharon: It’s just a chicken and noodle. . . something. You’ll like it. I tried some.

Jacob: It doesn’t matter. They all taste the same.

Sharon: Please eat. It’s just chicken and. . .

Jacob: It tastes like charity. . . charity chicken casserole. . . again!

Sharon: (Tense) And a good thing, too.

Jacob: I know. . . (softening a little) I know.

Sharon: Please. . . just eat something.

Jacob: Maybe later.

Sharon: (Sigh) Okay. (She starts to leave.)

Jacob: Mom? Thanks for worrying about me.

Sharon: It’s gonna be okay, Jacob.

Jacob: (With a slight hesitation) You don’t sound like you believe that.

Sharon: Feeling something and believing it aren’t always the same. But in a time like this, I choose to believe God’s Word. . . even when it doesn’t make sense. I’ve read this verse many times. “God is my strength and power: and He maketh my way perfect.” (2 Samuel 22:33) Do I understand what He’s doing right now? No! But I still trust Him.

SONG: I Will Trust in Him

SCENE 2

Jacob: I could have told you that you’d say that.

Sharon: (Easing into a chair) I guess you know me pretty well! (She favors her back.)

Jacob: Is your back hurting, Mom?

Sharon: Yeah. In fact, everything hurts! The better question is. . . what doesn’t hurt?

Jacob: Where’s Dad?

Sharon: He’s still talking with Pastor Ray.
