DESCRIPTION

In this worldly life, as one’s intellect increases, so does one’s inner turmoil. This intellect is the culprit, which ignites an inferno in the most unexpected moments leading to overt conflicts and tension. The highly revered Gnani Purush, Dadashri, has shown the easy way to be free from all inner turmoil and external conflicts. This is the path of internal apology and repentance. If you have any problems with anybody, then bow down internally to that person and ask for forgiveness, by saying, ‘I have made a mistake, I am very repentant and am asking for forgiveness’. All conflicts dissolve if you see your own faults and see the other person as faultless.Upon an incident of spillage of milk, the old intellect will say, ‘what a loss, you should have taken care,’ whereas today’s new Gnan will say, ‘whatever has happened is correct. There is no need to create interference.’ So the chapter of intellect finishes and everything gets cleared.

EDITORIALIn this worldly life, as one’s intellect increases, so does one’s inner turmoil. This intellect is

the culprit, which ignites an inferno in the most unexpected moments leading to overt conflicts andtension. The highly revered Gnani Purush, Dadashri, has shown the easy way to be free from allinner turmoil and external conflicts. This is the path of internal apology and repentance. If you haveany problems with anybody, then bow down internally to that person and ask for forgiveness, bysaying, ‘I have made a mistake, I am very repentant and am asking for forgiveness’. Then the innerturmoil will go away. Otherwise, by seeing the faults of others, inner turmoil will increase. Allconflicts dissolve if you see your own faults and see the other person as faultless.

The intellect will not harass you if you get rid of it. You too can be free from all turmoil likethe Gnani Purush, as you stop using the intellect. Thereafter one remains in the bliss of the Self(samadhi) even as the worldly interactions continue. What is the role of the intellect? It shows thatinjustice has been done to you. This creates inner turmoil. This turmoil leads to fights and battlesin the courts of the world, which destroys the present life's peace. Even at the end of it all, youwill not have justice. One of Dadashri’s cardinal aphorisms is: ‘The one who does not seek anyjustice is indeed liberated.’ He says, ‘I have never sought justice in my life.’ The intellect disappearsas you stop looking for justice.

The nature of the worldly intellect is such that it teases small matters with such persistence thatit ruins the owner and makes him miserable and this in turn makes everybody else miserable. Incontrast, simple and straightforward people excel when they do not tease matters and simply say, ‘hehad a fever and died,’ with reference to discussing someone who passed away. So it is better toprogressively stop listening to the intellect. The intellect will not interfere as one follows the Agnas(cardinal instructions) of the Gnani Purush. Gnan (Self-knowledge) clears the confusion created by theinterference of intellect. Upon an incident of spillage of milk, the old intellect will say, ‘what a loss, you should have taken care,’ whereas today’s new Gnan will say, ‘whatever has happened is correct. There is no need to create interference.’ So the chapter of intellect finishes and everything gets cleared. There is nothing wrong in eating vegetables, but saying, ‘this vegetable is not cooked properly,’ is aninterference of intellect. And afterwards he realizes that he has made an error by the criticism. Thusthe intellect will express its interfering nature for sure and place the owner in a suffering situation. Asone becomes free from the interfering intellect, one becomes spontaneous and free (sahaj).

The intellect will not sit quiet. Everywhere, it will agitate, afflict, confuse and mislead you.It will not let you remain calm. You are blessed if the intellect stops its riots permanently. The riotof the intellect will continue as long as it exists. So after receiving this Gnan, one has to be awarethat it is the intellect that is causing the riot. This is the excess ‘overwiseness’ of the intellect. Makethis type of intellect your enemy and tell it to stop giving you any advice. Otherwise this very intellectwill isolate you from the Gnani at the end. There is no other power that can separate you from theGnani. This is because the Gnani Purush is one’s own Self.

In the following compilation of satsang with Dadashri, the solutions to problems caused byintellect in worldly interactions as well as on the path to liberation (moksha) are presented and theywill prove to be a blessing for the spiritual aspirant.

(Please note that great care has been used to convey the exact message of Dadashri. Here ‘Y’ or ‘S’refers to the awakened Self or the Self. For glossary of the terms, please refer to : www.dadashri.org/glossary.html and www.ultimatespirituality.org )

and perpetuate stress and tension, cease. Theproblem is with the inner link of egoistic anger, which we continue harboring within. Let go ofthis link. Even when I am not guilty at all, ifsomeone says, ‘you are at fault,’ and I willimmediately apologize. Leave me alone fromhere, my friend! Besides, nowadays thedefinition of fault has changed.

Questioner: The other day you statedthat even when loss occurs, one should settlethe matter in this manner.

Dadashri: Yes, you should settle itpromptly in this manner. If you do not, then itwill spoil your mind. So from now onwards, you will be able to improve matters, will younot?

Questioner: Yes, for sure Dada.

Dadashri: It is done then, well and goodfor you.

Tension increases by seeing faults ofothers

Questioner: Nowadays I see a lot offaults of others. It seems to be increasing. Before, I did not see any faults.

Dadashri: Tension will increase byseeing faults of others. From the moment youstart seeing faults of others, tension begins. Thisis because our Gnan (knowledge of the Self, gained in Akram Vignan) says that the entireworld is flawless. To see it faulty increasestension. Don't you accept this understandingthrough the enlightened view? Do you acceptthis, with Gnan?

Questioner: I accept it, yet it stillhappens.

Dadashri: But we have to warn him

Freedom from tensionQuestioner: I continually feel tension

within the mind.

Dadashri: The mind will become agitatedwith tension. Sooner or later you will have tobecome free from tension.

Questioner: I do realize that it is wrongto have continued tension on the mind. I alsoknow that my health will suffer due to this.Despite this awareness, the tension continues.

Dadashri: If something wrong happensin your interaction with your father, then it willnot do any good to keep it in your mind. If youbow down to his feet right away (apologize),the tension will subside. If you experiencetension due to conflict with the Muslim horse-carriage rider on the way home, or anyone elsewho interacts with you during the day; bowingdown to him and apologizing will take away thetension. What is the need to carry any tensionhome with you?

Questioner: I do that in my mind, Dada.

Dadashri: Not just in your mind only, but you should openly state, ‘I salute youbrother!’ and see the tension leave promptly. This is for you to ensure your safe side on thepath to liberation. You are not saluting him toboost his ego. His ego will be taken care of byhis wife when he reaches home. Tension willincrease if we bring it home, unsettled. Weshould not bring any tension at home fromoutside. Wherever tension is created, deal withit by saying, ‘I have made a mistake, I amasking for forgiveness.’ This way tension willbe released. If we do not deal with it thus, thenthe tension will come home with us. Throughdirect words of apology, the thoughts that create

(the worldly self, Chandulal). The other personhas to be seen as faultless. When you see theother as guilty, then you have to say that, ‘I dosee you guilty but in fact I am the guilty one.I am asking for your forgiveness.’ Only thenwill the intellect cool down. Are you doing this?

Questioner: I do not do that.Dadashri: Stay in tension then.Questioner: No, I want to get rid of it,

Dada.Dadashri: Then, when will you get rid

of it? When you become old? What is the usewhen you cannot make good use of yourfaculties of youth, with its strength and power? This is the time when you should get rid ofyour tension and get your work done.

I am nobody, SirWe make a reservation in the first class

and yet we grumble with others! Hey, why doyou get up and grumble? Go to sleep quietly. This is your reservation. Your whole night willbe spoiled. If the other person starts grumbling, then you should say, ‘Sir, you are an honorablegentleman, and this here is out of my reach. Itjust has happened that I am in the first classcompartment, that's all. You are a big man.Take it easy and have a good night’s rest.’This way you should finish and go to sleep. Why do you need to grumble with him theentire night?

Intellect is the traitorQuestioner: Dada, I feel that the

interference is created by the intellect.Dadashri: The intellect is doing this, but

that is the nature of the intellect. Now we havethis Gnan, and therefore, we do understand thatnobody is at fault at all. Everything that appearsto be wrong is the fault of the intellect. It is theculprit that shows the faults of others, and thatis what makes us miserable. Our own intellectmakes us miserable after eating our own food! The intellect eats our food, stays in our home

and then bothers us only.Questioner: But why is it that the

intellect does not subside?Dadashri: It will not subside easily. This

is because we have nurtured it and made itgrow big. So it will not leave easily. It will onlyleave when it gets into our grip. Does it comeinto our grip? We have to keep looking for howto get it into our grip.

The intellect leads to sufferingTension can destroy a human being and

in the absence of this Gnan, tension existseverywhere. The entire world is suffering, isn'tit? Even this judge is stressed and suffering. But he stops the suffering after getting insidethe court. How does he stop it? He stops itwith his pride. He suppresses it, thinking,‘people will notice.’ In a way, he has thepower to throw someone out of court, but hehimself has come from home miserable!Nobody can stay without conflicts, be he amagistrate or a chief executive. Whoever hemay be, conflicts happen at home, don't they?

Questioner: They do happen Dada, conflicts continue.

Dadashri: Is everybody not linked withthe toilet? Whoever he may be, of whateverrepute, can he escape being friendly with thetoilet? On reflecting upon this, I understood!Affliction is everywhere. He is distressed evenwith his wife. Do you understand? So remainaware. I am telling you this, because yourintellect is working more. You have to becareful. That tension can destroy a humanbeing. You have acquired this wonderfulknowledge (Gnan), but even that can disappear. Then, you will not have any opportunity likethis again. Even when the other person is atfault, you should ask for his forgiveness.

Questioner: Such ego continues toremain that I find it hard to ask for forgivenesswith ease. It used to be such that previouslywhenever I made a mistake, I asked for

Page 5: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

forgiveness promptly and was done with it.Dadashri: So then you should reset it

again.

The One who does not use the intellectis a Gnani

These businessmen use the intellect.Mooah (The one who is dying spiritually, thisword used by Dadashri to alert a person)nobody will give a quarter for this intellect!People are dying in agony pain due to thisintellect. There is no need of the intellect. Hownice is the empire of these little kids who arefree from the interference of the intellect. TheGnani Purush is like a child. He is devoid ofintellect. This intellect has caused so muchsuffering. After receiving this Gnan, if onedoes not use the intellect, then he can remainlike the Gnani in eternal bliss.

Uninterrupted bliss with five Agnas

Samadhi (the bliss of the Self, being theSelf, Oneness with the pure Self)

One man is running his home life for thepast seven years. He is a farmer, making aliving off the land. He is Brahmin, keeps cowsand buffalos. Recently he got his daughtermarried. So he had invited all mahatmas (theones who have been enlightened by the Gnanof Dadashri). He says to me, ‘Dada, with thisDada’s Gnan, I have not experienced even asingle moment of disturbance (asamadhi) orloss of bliss, in the past seven years. Bliss(samadhi) has prevailed during bad times offamine and good times of prosperity. I askedhim, ‘What is the reason for this?’ Then hereplied, ‘Dada has given me five Agnas. Withthese, I do not create any disturbance anywhereat all. I follow the five Agnas.’

‘Dada has given me five Agnas. I do notunderstand anything else.’ Such is the beautyof this wonderful science! And all thisinterference is of the intellect. It is the causeof all distress.

After receiving this Gnan, gives divorceto intellect

How long do we need the intellect? Untilwe attain Gnan. After obtaining this Gnan, wedo not need the intellect. The intellect alwaysintrudes by its very nature. The intellect doesnot let the one who is dying (mooah), live. (Inthe vision of the Gnani, the entire world isdying if not aware of the Self).

Little kids’ lives go on smoothly. They donot fall down the stairs, and the poor father willsay, ‘They will fall, They will fall, They willfall.’ Mooah! Nobody has ever fallen ! InMumbai city, no kid has ever fallen, whereasthe father who worries has fallen so often. Heis a fool. After receiving this Gnan, whoeverdepends on this interfering intellect, is foolish.

Once we were going on a pilgrimage toMatheran. We were sitting on the platform atDadar station (suburb of Bombay). At 6:30AM, all the lights went out. I asked everybody, why the lights were turned off. They said,‘Dada, this is because daylight has come.’Then I said, ‘The light of the soul has come(Gnan), so now shut-off the lamp (intellect).’Not even a fool person will keep it on. All thisinterference is due to that lamp (the light of theintellect- indirect light). We do not need thoselamps. We should turn them off. I am abuddha(without intellect). It is due to the intellect thateveryone's faces appear as if they haveswallowed castor oil.

There is no need for intellect anymore. We should tell the intellect, ‘stay away. Youhave helped me for many days. Now pleaseretire and enjoy your pension. Your pensionwill continue.’

Still there is the authority of the intellect.Where such a tremendous light of knowledgehas expressed (which enlightens the entireworld), where is the necessity of the limitedlight of the lamp of the intellect? So it isnecessary to become abuddha.

Page 6: Against The Rioting Intellect

May 2006 5

DADAVANI

Why am I saying that I now rest afterbecoming abuddha? There is no telling whenthese people who exercise their intellect willlose their sense. It is better to hand over theintellect to Dada (The Lord within). Do nothand it over temporarily as a pawn. Hand itover permanently.

The one who does not seek justice isliberated

The whole world is looking for justice. Now, it is better, if he accepts the decisions ofthe lower courts. But he will say, ‘Thoughjustice is done in the first court, I am notsatisfied.’ Then he will go to the higher court. He will go to district court, even there he willsay, ‘No, I am not satisfied.’ Then he will goone step higher to the high court, not havingany satisfaction there also he will go to theSupreme Court and from there he will go tothe President. Even there nothing will happen, and then he will say that the whole justicedepartment is useless. He thinks that he is thebest judge and none can surpass him. This isthe nature of worldly life. The one, who doesnot seek any kind of justice, becomes free. Ihave never looked for justice in my life.

One makes it ‘sticky’ and suffers(Sticky is the term that stem from the

word ‘stick’, which refers to properties of gluethat attaches. This refers to repeatedinterference and teasing of the intellect whichdelves on an event or issue which hashappened and results in further ‘stickiness’ orattachment and thus creating further source oftension)

Questioner: The chitt (the inner organof knowledge and perception) will remain in amerry state if Gnan has 'fit' exactly.

Dadashri: Yes. Otherwise some simplehearted, ‘straight-forward’ people do have amerry state of the chit also. They are verycasual and carefree. They will not make itsticky with the intellect (get stuck at one point,

keep teasing and ruminating over the faults ofothers). These people who get stuck at onepoint and make it sticky are very miserable.

Questioner: Those people who make itsticky (delving unnecessarily on matters andevents) are always miserable.

Dadashri: Yes, unhappy all the time.Such a person has brought his nature ofpermanent unhappiness from the past life. Sodo not make it sticky. When asked ‘How didyour father die?’ reply that, ‘he had fever anddied.’ This is the short and simple response ofthe one who does not make it sticky. Aresponse like this will not prompt them tobother you. If you say, ‘I took him to thatdoctor,’ they will argue, ‘Why him? Why didn’tyou call that other doctor?’ Thus people willcome and drive you crazy with unnecessarydiscussion. It is better to say, ‘He had feverand died.’ They will not pester you anymore.Dim the light of intellect in this manner

Questioner: The one with a welldeveloped intellect does get involved in thismatter of stickiness, regardless of whether hedesires it or not, because of his ability todiscern (see) it minutely, does he not?

Dadashri: He will suffer that much. Therefore the one with such developed intellectwill turn around after experiencing this suffering. He will learn to stop using the intellect again insuch instances. He will not switch on the lightof the intellect there.

Questioner: But, how can that intellectbe used in the right manner?

Dadashri: There is no need to press theswitch (the light of intellect), unnecessarily.

Questioner: Then it is like keeping amachine in an idle state.

Dadashri: Do not keep it unoccupied, let the light be there, but dim it. If we cover thelamp bulb with either a red or a black piece ofcloth, then there is no problem. The bulb of a

Page 7: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

hundred watts cannot be diminished, but itslight can be muffled with a piece of coloredcloth just so that it emanates light of fifteenwatts. This prevents us seeing the snake(negativity) that enters within and createstension. Otherwise for the others they do notrest until they see the snake leave.

Break the old habits with Agnas

Questioner: After attaining this Gnan, the intellect arises and interferes. Now wherethere is Gnan the intellect should not arise andwhere intellect exists Gnan will not remain, sowhy is this happening?

Dadashri: These current happeningsare the result of your old habits of misuse ofthe intellect. That is why I have given youthese Agnas. If you follow the Agnas, then theintellect will not be used. But you have the oldhabit that is not going away, and due to thathabit it appears to you this way. It will takesome years for this habit to go. Once theintellect leaves then this discharge ego will alsoleave promptly.

Questioner: As long as the dischargeego (dying belief of ‘I am Chandulal’) exists, the varying phases and facets of intellect willcontinue to express.

Dadashri: The intellect will stay, butwhen that discharge ego reaches a certainstage, at that time we can say that the intellectis as good as gone. As long as the ego is at thehigher stage, the intellect will start to decrease, and then it will settle, afterwards you will notfeel that, ‘I have intellect.’

Questioner: So as we follow the Agnasmore and more, as….

Dadashri: The intellect will not interfere.

Questioner: It will not interfere?

Dadashri: It will not create anyinterference. Let go of the intellect. BecomeShuddhatma (Pure Soul): ‘I am Shuddhatma.’

As the intellect stops, worldlyinteractions will dissolve

The intellect will subside in proportion tothe amount of silence you hold on to. Silencewill follow the termination of intellect. Today, itis the intellect that makes you speak relentlessly. The intellect and the ego join together andmake you speak relentlessly. When it (the non-Self) becomes silent, it will all turn around.

Liberation (moksha) begins when thedoors of the intellect close. Worldly interactionsexist due to the intellect. Those who do nothave intellect, their worldly interaction (sansar-life after life account) is dissolving. Theanimals and birds do not have intellect, but theydo have ego. They do not have intellect, sotheir worldly interaction keeps dischargingconstantly. Likewise, the beings in hell, as wellas those in the celestial realm (heaven) aresimply discharging (not charging) their worldlyinteractions. Look at these intellectual people(!) (with their interfering intellect) Such fortunatepeople !

The intellect creates restlessnessQuestioner: The intellect keeps

interfering, that this will happen, that willhappen. All these interferences of the intellectcontinue all day long.

Dadashri: Yes, what is going to happen? We should say to the intellect, ‘this factory isrunning by itself, not losing business, all brothersare alive, so what is going to happen?’ Weshould say, ‘Nothing is going to happen.’

Questioner: That is correct, Dada, buteven then the intellect continues to intrude andcreate its own realm. It exaggerates thatwhich is insignificant.

Dadashri: Yes, it will, then what shouldwe do with it? Should we make friendship withthe intellect?

Questioner: We should get rid of it.Dadashri: Yes, we should get rid of it.

Page 8: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

Such a strong and young fellow like you! Whatwill happen when you become weak with age?‘What will happen? What will happen?’ Theworld is as it is. What is going to happen? Weare alive. This steamer started from Englandand came here safely. On the way if it swayedthree times, do we have to think that, ‘whatwill happen?’ Eat, drink and pray to God. Inthe name of Jesus Christ! Does a ship notsway with the waves in the ocean? Now atthat time, if you say, ‘What will happen? Whatwill happen? What will happen?’ Who teachesthat? It is the intellect that is interfering. Theintellect is harassing you. What is going tohappen? One of two things may happen; eitherit is going to sink or it is going to float. So becalm and pray to God. Can a third thinghappen? And sinking would happen veryrarely.

Extinguish the lamp of intellectMy intellect is not functioning. When the

intellect is in function, the mind begins grumblingannoyingly. We should tell the intellect, ‘whyare you grumbling? Besides you are themother-in-law of the mother-in-law. How longshould we keep this unpleasant relationship?’

Questioner: But we cannot do withoutintellect, right ?

Dadashri: It's like this; if we only havethe light of intellect, then it is necessary. Whenthis light is not there then one needs the lightof Gnan. Do we need light or not? Intellect islike a lamp. I have given you Gnan (knowledgeof Self), so in this light then, you do not needthe light of intellect. If you do not have thisGnan then you need the intellect. Who willkeep both the lights? At this time, if this brightlight is on, then will you not turn off the othercandlelight? And if you do not extinguish itthen what will someone say? Can’t you seethe bright light all over? Can you extinguishthis? There is benefit in being abuddha (withoutintellect). Both lights are not to be kept. Onlyin the absence of this light of Gnan, will the

light of the intellect be of use.The intellect comes happily when you

say, ‘welcome’ and likewise by saying, ‘getlost, you witch,’ it will leave, with a sour face.We do not have any objection, if it (intellect)leaves with aversion.

The intellect grumbles : ‘not enough’If somebody serves us half a cup of tea,

due to some inconvenience that arose in themorning. Even though the cup is half full oftea, the intellect will interfere and grumble,‘What am I going to do with this half cup oftea? What is there to drink in it?’ This and that, finding faults with what is at hand. When itinterferes thus, we should say, ‘Hey witch, letme have this much tea. You don't let me haveeven this much tea in peace.’ How rude! Itwill not let you drink even that much tea. ‘I gotthis half cup with lots of trouble. At least letme drink it so that half my mind will berefreshed!’ What will the intellect do? It willnot let you drink peacefully. It was with somedifficulty that I got this half cup of tea. Hownice would it be if the intellect lets us drink itin peace! At least it is half full! But the witch(intellect) will not let us drink even the half.‘Only half a cup?’ is the spell of the ill omencast even before the cup comes to the lip! Atleast half a cup will refresh half the mind, willit not? Better half than nothing at all.

Questioner: Is that the mind, that takesover the grumbling afterwards? The intellectshows, that it is only half a cup and then is itthe mind which carries on?

Dadashri: Later, the mind takes over.Once the intellect rises and rolls, the mind isaffected and starts rolling and grumbling. Italso will not let you have half a cup peacefully.Oh mooah (again, the classic Dada awakeningterm for the one who is destined to die), sucha nice cup of tea!

Milk and sugar are separate, tea isseparate, oh mooah!, such good tea! An

Page 9: Against The Rioting Intellect

8 May 2006

DADAVANI

expensive brand. If half then half a cup it is.At least it will soothe half the brain, will it not?The intellect will destabilize our mind! One willnot drink and in addition spoil everything. Fromthe beginning it will cast a bad spell,‘Hummmm.., only half a cup?!!!’ ‘Get lost youstupid witch,’ should be our response to theopening ill omen. This sort of thing happenedwith you earlier, didn't it ?

Questioner: It happened just like this.Dadashri: It will not be so for me. If I

get half a cup, I will say fine, let us have it. Itwill do. It is Vyavasthit (scientific circumstantialevidence). I will get half a cup for sure. Thatmuch will help part of my brain. Otherwise theother approach will unsettle the mind and spoileverything. What is wrong if we say somethingwhen it starts nagging? We should say, ‘heywitch; you cast an ill omen even before I touchthe tea?’ There is no problem if we call theintellect, a witch. It has no power to make acounter claim. It will notice the insult andremain subservient. In the past we used torespect and welcome it and that has given riseto all this tension within.

The harm of excess intellectQuestioner: If we do not stay

completely within Gnan and Pragna (the directlight of the Self), then are we working in socialdealings with intellect only?

Dadashri: It is just enough to say thatyou are using intellect in social dealings.Otherwise, the intellect takes care of socialaffairs by itself. I am telling you, I do not haveintellect (Abuddha). I am saying that, I havedeficiency of the intellect. Even then intellectkeeps working in the social dealings. Thisvegetable is cooked and this is not cooked, thusit keeps working!

Questioner: Should we use the intellectjust enough as needed?

Dadashri: No, the intellect is used byitself. This excess intellect is the one which

says, ‘you need me’. That is the excessintellect, and that the intellect is harmful. Onlythis excess intellect is contradictory or harmful.

To separate ego from intellect ispurusharth ! (Real effort)

Say for example, your own brother is inthe hospital; to get there you are traveling bytrain. After you get in the train, thoughts like‘when will the train reach?’ are interference ofthe intellect. And in the train if someone offers,‘please, have some tea’, you may say, 'yes I'llhave some to show courtesy but soon you willbe lost in thoughts and will not even enjoy thetea. Hey, now you are on the train! Is it goingto fly to take you there? What kind of crazypeople are you? Can you sit at ease or not?’But these people will go back and forth in thetrain.

Questioner: You had said that theintellect is not showing anything new. Theintellect is helping the ego in making the finalauthoritative decision. Is this jumping around ofthe ego or the intellect?

Dadashri: The intellect gets the signatureof approval from the ego. After taking approvalfrom the ego, all the work is accomplished. Now, when some work is not going to happen, the ego gets separated from the intellect. Theego objects, saying, ‘here it will not work asyou (intellect) direct.’

Questioner: Will you please explainsome more about that? You had said, ‘toseparate the intellect and ego is the onlypurusharth (spiritual endeavor) in worldly life.’

Dadashri: Yes, it is purusharth in relativedealings to separate the intellect and the ego.In relative dealings when the intellect and egoget mixed, purusharth has not happened at all.The intellect and ego should remain separate inrelative dealings. Then it is relative purusharth. We have no use of such purusharth in theAkram path.

Now, what should one do after getting

Page 10: Against The Rioting Intellect

May 2006 9

DADAVANI

on the train? Tell me. The brother is very sickand is asking us to go soon so what should onedo in the train? To avoid the harassment of theintellect, isn't some kind of an arrangementneeded?

Questioner: Intellectual people do notbecome restless in the train.

Dadashri: You do not see that. I cansee everything that happens inside the socalled intellectual people. They simply keep upappearances to hide the tremendous tensionwithin. Stupid people are better than them. They will have tea or smoke a cigarette. Eventhen the train reaches for both !

The intellect creates riots everywhere

Questioner: My circumstances werevery favorable, and I have met the absoluteenlightened Self. This experience has destroyedall my doubts. Therefore there is no inclinationthat pulls me in worldly matters and conflicts.

Dadashri: The intellect creates all theseriots. All the work is done well for the onewhose intellect stays orderly. The intellect willnot sit calmly. It will not let you sleep at night. If you are told, ‘Here is the Lord in livingform,’ it will nag you all night. Hey, why areyou tormenting me? Can't you let me sleep inpeace? It does not nag you, so your intellect isgood. Otherwise the intellect argues a lot likea lawyer. The intellect does unlimited argumentsand pleadings.

Questioner: I accept heartily nine ofyour ten teachings and messages. It seems tome that having understood nine, the tenth willcome to me automatically. So I am not comingto you for clarification of the tenth messageand talk.

Dadashri: If you have understood nine, then keep the tenth pending. When the timewill come, you will understand. But you do notneed to use your intellect in trying to understandit by your self.

Now this state of the Gnani is theworld’s most glorious state. If one recognizesthis, then one will achieve liberation! If onlyone recognizes it, isn't it ? I shout that the laststation has arrived. But what did he understand?I can make him experience it, but even afterthe experience, the intellect will not let himrest. Secondly, there is the problem ofcharitramoha (that which deludes in dischargingkarma effects). It will not let him sit quietly!Look at this! How have all these people(mahatmas) settled down quietly here! Whenthe intellect does not make you restless, knowthat you are blessed. So the intellect did notharass you at all. Had the intellect harassedbefore you came here?

Questioner: Yes, a lot.

Dadashri: Yes, you inquired a lot beforeyou came here and due to that you lostvaluable time. The interfering intellect cancreate much havoc. It will not let you sitquietly.

Questioner: The intellect interferes, butwhen I follow your instructions and leave itnear my shoes at the door, then the work isdone well.

Dadashri: It is wise. Prior to meetingme you did not have the power to deal with itsinterfering nature. Now you can let it (intellect)sit outside, you can say, ‘sit outside, I will beback.’ Now we have become Purush, the Self.

Questioner: And when we keep theintellect outside, then it takes care of the shoesvery well.

Dadashri: It will take good care. Theintellect will not take over, otherwise it willtake over.

Show disagreement with the intellect !

The one who has no worldly desires is aGnani Purush. Such a one is not the owner ofthe body, not the owner of the mind, and notthe owner of the speech. Before such a Gnani

DADAVANI

Purush where is the need for any interferenceof intellect. If he tells us to go to sleep, weshould go to sleep in peace. He (the Gnani)says what is beneficial does he not?

Questioner: In this era, the intellect isthe culprit which causes all the harassment, isn't it?

Dadashri: Yes. The intellect createsinterference. But now, we should recognize thetrue nature of intellect, and say, ‘Dear Madam!Would you kindly leave and go to yourhusband’s home? How long can you stay withyour parents after marriage? I will send you athousand Rupees a year.’ She has to be givena farewell ceremony. Then she will leave, willshe not? Thereafter you will not need to callher again.

We have raised her up, and we continueto feed her, So it is no surprise to find hertaking advantage of you, and not listening toyou. She will continue to interfere and nag you. This interference will continue as long as sheremains in your home.

Questioner: The interference spoils itall for sure.

Dadashri: What is wrong with that? You are simply to see it all. See the one whowent to interfere. What should we do if aMuslim gentleman who eats meat enters thekitchen where a group of strict vegetarianBrahmins are having their meal? Should wejust watch what happens or should we alsoenter it (intellectual interference)? We shouldjust see what happens. Observe the hotinteractions that follow from both sides.

Puzzles of excess intellectQuestioner: I understand Dada, what

you are trying to convey, yet afterwards theintellect continues to interfere leading to riots.

Dadashri: So then, when the intellectinterferes and the riot happens, then watch theriot, and we are to know that the intellect is theculprit.

Questioner: But I can't stay in thatstate of seeing only and I slip.

Dadashri: It may seem so, that youhave slipped. It is not so.

Questioner: It feels that way, but Icannot become like you.

Dadashri: The intellect will interfere ofcourse. But we should know the nature of theintellect that this interference has been causedby her. Can we not see this much? A womancomes to your home along with a little boy anda little girl. Would you not know that thewoman represents interference in your home?In the same manner simply know the nature ofinterference. Nothing else. Would you notknow who represents the interference?

Questioner: I do know, but later on.Dadashri: No. This will happen, and

you will know it later. The key thing is to knowthe interference as the interference, andthereafter nothing matters.

Questioner: The intellect createspuzzles, what is that?

Dadashri: The puzzles are due to‘overwiseness’ (excessive interference ofintellect). By ‘overwiseness’ I mean that oneuses his own intellect and (limited) wisdom todo the entire tasks. He uses his wisdom in allmatters. He follows the directions of theGnani, yet he also uses his own intellect. Theprescription calls for the medicine to be takenat 3:00 PM, and he will say, ‘what’s wrongwith taking it at 3:15?’So, thus, he always layshis own intellect. Such a person will be facedwith a lot of puzzles.

From this day on, create vengeance withthe intellect.

Due to the interruptions confusionoccurs

And the intellect will interfere. So howdoes the intellect interfere? At one person’shome, fifteen to twenty people were invited for

Page 12: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

dinner. The menu for shrikhand needed yogurt. He called a bahiya (chef) to make yogurt. Thechef came and warmed up a few gallons ofmilk, and after it cooled, around 8:00 PM headded this much starter yogurt in it, stirred itand instructed the host to keep it aside. Thenhe asked the chef, ‘what do I have to donow?’ ‘Nothing’, replied the chef, ‘simply goto bed’. The man asked, ‘how come nothingfurther needs to be done? How will the yogurtform?’ The chef said, ‘Please go to bed, andsleep soundly. When you wake up in themorning the yogurt will be done in fine form.’

But the man has the interfering intellect. So he woke up at 1:00 o’ clock at night. Hewas thinking in his mind that how is it going tohappen just like that? I need to check, right? Ineed to check it out, right? He woke up at 1:00o’clock and dipped his finger in the mixture.Dipped his finger! The yogurt got spoiled. Thechef had said to check it in the morning! Sothis intellect is the one which interfered.

So therefore for tonight tell the intellect,‘hey intellect, come to lunch at noon tomorrow, not before then.’ If you will converse with theintellect, it will listen to you promptly. This isbecause it stays with you constantly. Howmany days is it going to stay with you and keepfighting?

Conversation with the misleadingintellect

You have to listen and assimilateeverything here. Here hundreds of thousandsof solutions are available. This is the place, inthe satsang of the Gnani, where you have tolisten and then make the adjustments. In this, when the intellect shows something negativewithin, you have to tell it, ‘relax madam, I havenot come here in this world to learn moreworldly interactions and entanglements. I amnow on the path of moksha. So do not adviseme anymore.’

The intellect will interfere. When our

own intellect shows us the wrong path, it is ourown fault, is it not?The Gnani is just one step ahead of you

Let me tell you, I am leading you on thepath that I myself have walked on. In this pathI am ahead of you by just one step. You aresimply following me. I have not moved anyfurther ahead on the path. I have given youeverything, whatever I had. Some gurus aresecretive. Who are the ones who will keepsomething hidden from their disciples? Thosewho want to become gurus. Such gurus do notshare all the keys with their disciples. I haveno desire to be a guru. My only desire is tohave you become like me. Why should I opena business of being a guru? Is it not abusiness?

Questioner: Dada, you have expressedyour deep intent here that we are very closebehind you. Is it really true that we are thatmuch close behind you?

Dadashri: Yes, you may stray a bit fromme, because of your own feverish nature, butin time when you overcome your fever of innernegativities then you will be with me for sure. This is the elevator path. If you becomeargumentative with me, then you will spoil yourspiritual progress. There is nothing within methat has the potential to harm you. That canonly happen if you initiate an adverse courseby yourself. Yes, if there is some attributewithin me that initiates negativity within youthen it is understandable. But you yourselfshould not commence any negativity within.

The intellect distances one from theGnani

If your karmas make you obstinate andinterfere then you are to understand this andtell your self, ‘My brother, can you not staywithout being stubborn even at this place (thevicinity of the Gnani)? Therefore, when karmais such that it misleads you from within, youshould say, ‘behave here, or else I will dismiss

Page 13: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

you.’ The intellect will interfere, but AkramVignan will protect you until the final momentof liberation. I protect even the one who hasleft here cursing me. He is cursing me notbecause of his karmic account, but because ofmy karmic account. He is possessed by karmicghosts within. He is settling my account. Whatis our duty? If somebody had an accident, would you not go and help him?

Questioner: Yes, I will do my best tosave and help him.

Dadashri: Yes. How can we help himstop bleeding? How can we get him the besthelp quickly? This should be our duty.

However, what will the intellect do? Theintellect will commence swachhand (to actaccording to one’s own decisions and intellectand not according to the instructions given byothers). Even when he is in front of theenlightened Lord Mahavira, he will say, ‘theLord will say so, but I am going to do it thisway.’ That is the swachhand of the intellect.

One of our mahatmas (those who haveacquired Gnan of the Self) had whipped theintellect mercilessly. When the intellect showedanything negative of the Gnani, he whipped ituntil it surrendered completely. He told her,‘what the hell do you think of yourself? Howdare you make a fool out of me? I understandit all. Why are you making your argumentshere and contradicting the one who is here toliberate me? It is intellect that makes you havearguments and clash with your wife or children, but even at this (in front of the Gnani) place? The same had happened in front of LordMahavira (previous life). Intellect will not letyou rest in peace.

The intellect makes one wander lifeafter life

Questioner: Having surrendered at thefeet of Dada moksha is experienced, isn't it?

Dadashri: Some mahatma’s intellectwill repeatedly trap him in the web of deception

and then he will become depressed. Theintellect is deceiving him. The others here arefree from the deception of the intellect. Oncethe intellect deceives, there is no solution. When there is no solution, no meaningful taskgets done. When intellect deceives you nowork gets done. Neither the worldly task norany spiritual work gets done. Therefore I haveshown you the way. Keep doing pratikramans, and tell the Lord within, ‘Alas! In what a statehad I done such karmas?’

Questioner: When I was doing thebusiness of the intellect (using intellect), noteven a single word of yours took hold withinwith spiritual results. And when I left theintellect outside near the shoes (tradition ofremoving shoes outside before entering thechamber of the Gnani or the Lord), whateveryou speak, sinks inside directly, bringingmeaningful results. How come?

Dadashri: It is verily the intellect that iscreating all the havoc and interference. Theintellect makes one buddhoo (slang for stupid). Then he walks around like a buddhoo. Eventhe worldly people will say this one is buddhoo. All the hassle is from the intellect. I do nothave any intellect, and that is why I havesucceeded. Your intellect too will leavegradually. My intellect has ceased, so the workis done.

The Gnani is my Soul

Questioner: I do not have any question, yet why am I so attracted to Dada and wantto come to him?

Dadashri: Questioning representsinterference of the intellect. The intellectcannot relax, that is why it questions. Otherwiseit is better if you do not have any questions. What is the reason that you like to come hereeven when you have no questions? It isbecause Dada is your own manifest soul. Thatis why you like to remain sitting near Him.That is why Shrimad Rajchandra had said, ‘the

Page 14: Against The Rioting Intellect

May 2006 13

DADAVANI

Gnani Purush is the Lord in human form.’ Ihowever will always maintain that, ‘I am aninstrument only.’ But you have to see it theother way. As the questioning ceases the bodywill become spontaneous and natural (sahaj). The sahaj state is devoid of intellect and

egoQuestioner: What is the meaning of

the natural state of the Self (sahaj atmaswaroop)?

Dadashri: If this body becomesspontaneous and natural (sahaj) then the Soulis already in its natural state. When all thisrelative portion becomes sahaj, then the otherportion, the Soul does not need to becomesahaj as it is already sahaj. There is noproblem with the Self. We have to make thisbody revert to its natural state. Spontaneous! The intellect is the culprit that interferes.

Questioner: We are instructed tomaximize the time with the Gnani. So when westay around the Gnani, then we can observe allthe natural spontaneity of the Gnani, right?

Dadashri: Yes. The whole day you canobserve his spontaneity. How natural! Howpure and spontaneous! How pure are theintents of the egoless state. You get to see thestate devoid of intellect. These two are veryrare; one never gets to see the state devoid ofthe ego and the intellect. Wherever you lookyou will see people with intellect. Their wordsare filled with ego and arrogance. When theytalk, they talk with puffed up noses (arrogance).Their nose would be puffed up with arrogance.Nothing is natural in them. Puffed up noses, lifted high up in the air! Even when you try totake their picture their noses are high in the airwith ego. And if a photographer happens tosee me, he will take a picture even if he didn’twant to. He will say, ‘Here is a man who isnatural and spontaneous and without any air ofegoism.’ A photograph of the stiff puffed noseis never natural.

The sahaj neither favors nor rejectsIt is all right to eat and enjoy whatever

food comes before you, with ease; be itmaalpuda, (a rare sweet delicacy) or doodhpaak(rice pudding with milk). And if you havereceived simple rotla (thick Indian chapati) andvegetables, then enjoy that also. Do not rejectthe maalpuda and doodhpaad and do notrevere the rotla. Do not favor one and insultthe other.

Questioner: I can understand from thisexample how one can become natural.

Dadashri: No insult to one and norespect to another is the sahaj state. Thatwhich comes with ease is called sahaj. Then itis all right even if one eats jalebi (sweet andflavored golden rings fried to crispness). Yethe will say, ‘it is fried.’ Leave it alone, man.Fried food hurts the one whose intellect hasinterfered to the point of perversion. It doesnot hurt the one who is sahaj and eatswhatever comes on the plate. Eat what comesto you. Suffer the pain and the pleasure thatcomes to you as it arises. To the Gnani, thereis no pain or pleasure. It just arises in front. And this other person, if it is uninvited, will hekeep it if it tastes bitter?

Questioner: No. He will throw it out ifit is bitter.

Dadashri: Let the mouth become bitterif it does so. We are not to interfere in that. That is the mark of the sahaj. This wholespiritual path is of the sahaj. That is whyKrupaludev (Shrimad Rajchandra) says, ‘thepath of salvation is straight, natural, and easy;but it is very, very rare.’ This is because themeeting with a Gnani Purush is extremely rareevent. He has stressed this a hundred timesover!

Questioner: The only thing left is tocome close to you and become sahaj.

Dadashri: Indeed, simply sahaj. Onlysahaj! Having observed my sahaj nature, once

Page 15: Against The Rioting Intellect

14 May 2006

DADAVANI

a resolution is made, the person becomessahaj.

Questioner: Yet you maintain that aslong as the intellect remains, one will not beable to become sahaj, isn't it?

Dadashri: This intellect verily, makesyou wander in this world and the worldlyexistence remains due to the intellect. As longas the intellect remains, one cannot becomenatural (spontaneous). As the intellectdecreases, the spontaneous ness increases.

Two categories of sahaj states

My sahaj state is like that of a little child. It is so with the presence of Gnan. It is notthrough the intellect. Expression through intellectmakes one emotional and it creates differencesof ‘mine and yours.’ The expression throughGnan does not create any differences andnever makes one emotional.

Questioner: Animals have aspontaneous nature and the Gnanis also havespontaneous nature, so what is the differencebetween the two?

Dadashri: All three, animals, childrenand the Gnani have spontaneous nature.Wherever intellect prevails there is no sahaj-spontaneous nature. Limited intellect isassociated with spontaneous nature. Childrenhave limited intellect, animals have limitedintellect and in the Gnani, the intellect hassubsided completely. So the Gnani is downrightspontaneous. A child is also spontaneous. Thatis why I say that the Gnani is like a child.

Questioner: But what is the differencebetween a Gnani and a child?

Dadashri: The child is with ignoranceand Gnani is with knowledge of the Self. Thatone is in darkness and this one is with light. Ahuman being cannot remain natural with thelight of intellect. Therefore when intellectleaves, he can remain in the spontaneous state.Otherwise one cannot remain without becoming

emotional. The intellect will make one emotionalfor sure. The dull one will not be affected andwill not become emotional. You may criticize adull person repeatedly and he will not beaffected. Why? It is because he does notreceive the criticism. The intellect is not thereto receive and respond. He simply cannot getthe message in his head!! And the ones withintellect will receive the message even beforeyou speak! It reaches him even as you arethinking!

Possession by the ghost of etiquettemake one be unnatural

So we will need this heartily. Heartilymeans the intellect is not used. And if intellectis used then the ghost of etiquette (the need toconform to worldly standards and opinions)arises to create more madness amidst the riotsthat are already happening. As it is, enoughmadness is going on, why invite one moreghost? Have you seen etiquette?

Questioner: Previously, we used to livewith etiquette only Dada.

Dadashri: Is that right? Do you like thisetiquette now?

Questioner: It becomes burdensomenow. Isn't it?

Dadashri: It feels like ghosts, ghosts! Many people got rid of those etiquettes aftermeeting me. I tell them, ‘why are you possessedwith these ghosts? Is it not a ghost if it tellsyou, ‘if I sit here in this cramped place in frontof Dada, my clothes will wrinkle up?’ My dear, there are so many wrinkles within that needclearing up! Why not let go of the onesoutside? Have you seen all those ghosts ofetiquette? Is there any puzzle for this Dadawho looks like a kind, simple villager? Does henot appear pure to you? Why mess with theghost of etiquette? It will leave only whenwrong understanding leaves. Is it possible forwrong understanding to leave?

Page 16: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

The Gnani gets rid of past life negativitiesTo the intelligent people, their intellect

will show, ‘What is there here for these peopleto clap their hands for Dada?’ It will showsuch negativity. Highly reputed and educatedpeople in Mumbai ask me, ‘what is the reasonfor all this excessive show of appreciation foryou?’ I told them, ‘in their prior lives they hadharbored much negativity for the Gnani and inthis life they are clearing all those negativities.’Can you take these negativities with you tomoksha?

Questioner: No, no.Dadashri: They are doing it to remove

their past life's negativities and irritations. Ifyou do it yourself, it will leave. Yes, otherwise,as a Gnani why should I take up the businessof getting rid of it for you? I am a GnaniPurush and such junk is not right in Gnan, no?All this garbage needs to be emptied. This isAkram Vignan (Dadashri’s step less path toliberation). In the Kramik path (step-by-steptraditional path to the Self) it is different. There, you have to keep it with you and keepsuffering. Here you have to get rid of it byemptying (let it express as is) it and bring it toan end. What is left after becoming a pureSoul (Self realization, Shuddhatma)?

Questioner: How can we stop theintellect and keep it away from repeatedinterferences?

Dadashri: Have you taken Gnan?Questioner: No.Dadashri: You will not be able to

understand it right now. This understanding isvaluable for the one who has received Gnan.Until then, intellect is the base and runseverything. After Self-realization, there is nodependence on the intellect.

Identify the advice of the intellectQuestioner: After even coming under

your shelter, if the intellect deceives one, then

there is no more unfortunate being than him.Dadashri: Even then, it will deceive.

The intellect will deceive even a very spirituallycareful person. That is why you shouldrecognize the intellect in advance. What am Itelling you is that whenever the intellect comesto you to give you advice, tell her, ‘go to yourparent’s home. Now I do not need you. I getinto problems listening to your advice.’ Listeningto the advice of the intellect only will lead usto problems.

Questioner: Dada is right in advising usto send madam intellect to her parents’ home, but just by saying that she does not leave.

Dadashri: She may not leave. But if wesay this once, then she (intellect) will understandthat I have become unpleasant to the owner. She will understand that I am not being lovedany more. It is like the one who you want todivorce. If you do not say to her at least once,‘I am going to leave you,’ then what will sheunderstand? Similarly, you have to tell her(intellect), ‘I am going to remain separate fromyou.’ Then she will be in doubt and remainsubservient. And if she comes to tell yousomething, she will be intimidated and thinkthat, ‘will he scold me? What will he do?’

When intellect creates a whirlpool within,it confuses you. Therefore, you have to tell herfrom the beginning, ‘do not give me any adviceat all. I do not want your advice. Your advicehelped me for many days in the worldly life.Your advice helped me when you wereneeded, at the time of the marriage of my sonand daughter. Now I want to go to moksha. Ido not need your advice now.’

Intellect has helped until now in worldlylife. When we did not have Dada’s Gnan, didwe not live our life? Yes, it helped us in ourworldly life. But now the intellect will not letyou go to moksha. Its role and limit is to keepyou in the worldly life. She will take you to thetop, but she will not let you leave worldly life.

Page 17: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

The remedy to get rid of the intellect !Questioner: How can we abandon the

intellect?Dadashri: You do not have to abandon

the intellect. The intellect is not something thatyou can abandon. You have to have the deepinner intent to get rid of the intellect. Keepingsuch deep inner intent (bhaav), day by day itwill start to decrease and if you keep havingthe intent that it is necessary then the intellectwill keep increasing.

Questioner: Therefore, should ourintention be to become abuddha (withoutintellect), till the end?

Dadashri: Yes, it is necessary to becomejust that. Only that intent is in our hand. Theeffect is not in our hand. The action ofdoership exists in ignorance. After this Gnan(Self-realization), there is no doership andtherefore, only the intent remains.

The intellect is not a fileQuestioner: (with Mahatma): Is it true,

that the intellect is a file?Dadashri: No.Questioner: Are we not to include the

intellect as one of the files?Dadashri: If you want to consider it as

a file, do so. If you do not want to consider, then it is not necessary to call it a file. Whatdoes a file have to do with the intellect? If youdo not want to listen to the intellect, then whois going to make you listen to it?

Suppose I have decided at home that, Ido not want to listen to whatever this personsays. Don't you decide something like that?

Questioner: So is it not a matter tosettle with equanimity?

Dadashri: ‘I am not going to listen’,means I have decided in my mind that let himspeak, and I will not listen. I do not want heradvice. You have to settle a file with equanimity.

But it is not a file. This is more like it isshowing you, ‘the way to Taj Mahal.’ Afterreading this, you may go to Taj Mahal if youwant to. You will be ensaved !!

This is not one of my Agnas. This isunnecessary pain. You do not have to doanything outside the Agnas. Whenever theintellect interferes, then we have to tell her off,‘this is not part of the Agnas so please leave.’

Questioner: This ‘Chandubhai’ (relativeself) is a file. So then, is it not a part of a file?Is intellect a page of the file or not?

Dadashri: No. Intellect is not a file. Wehave to settle the file with Chandubhai andChandubhai has to take care of this.Chandubhai should not listen to the intellect.Chandubhai has to listen to all except the talkof the intellect.

Questioner: Therefore, we are toexplain to Chandubhai not to listen to theintellect?

Dadashri: Yes, right, talk to Chandubhai!

Interruption of niddidhyasan by intellect

Questioner: I cannot get niddidhyasan(inner visualization, contemplation of the Gnani)of Dada or anybody else. The snapshot, photois not taken, the image does not form, what isthe reason for that?

Dadashri: The problem is the intellect. That interference is done by the intellect.

Questioner: Then what should I do?

Dadashri: Nothing. Intellect isinterfering. We are to know that thisinterference is due to the intellect and itappears this way due to this intellect. Somepeople say that, ‘Dada, I cannot see the exactface during niddidhyasan.’ I reply, ‘the intellectis interfering.’ However, we (the awakenedSelf) have to see it exact, as it is.

Questioner: How does the intellectinterfere?

Page 18: Against The Rioting Intellect

May 2006 17

DADAVANI

Dadashri: It drags us out of ourniddidhyasan, into worldly things.

Questioner: Or, the intellect keepssaying, ‘niddidhyasan is not happening.’

Dadashri: Yes, right. ‘It is not coming’,it will also say that the intellect will make allthese arguments to hold you onto worldly lifeand prevent you from going towards Moksha(liberation). The intellect will make thesearguments to keep you in bondage.

Questioner: It will make us do thatwhich we have no desire to do.

Dadashri: Yes. It will make you do allthat. These are all its arguments to keep you inworldly life. It will never let you move towardsliberation. And for others, once niddidhyasanhas set in, it does not leave even for a second.

Questioner: Once it has set in, it doesnot go away. But I am talking about the lackof niddidhyasan in the first place.

Dadashri: That niddidhyasan occurswhen difficulties come. During bodily sufferingsthe Chitt stays where the pain is, and at thattime with niddidhyasan, peace prevails. Atsuch time niddidhyasan sets well. There arepeople who, when they travel by the train, have the niddidhaysan of Dada as they closetheir eyes. With such presence there is nostress from anywhere. There is no trouble ifDada stays before you all the time, isn't it?

You were saying, I want to pursue Dadaonly. So then for you it is good to have directface-to-face niddidhyasan.

Questioner: With reference to thisniddidhyasan, are we to visualize the entireimage precisely, or are we to visualize thegross imprint?

Dadashri: Niddidhyasan requires thatany kind of mental image may appear. Theintellect will not allow precise niddidhyasan.

Questioner: Will there be a shadow?

Dadashri: Yes, there will be a shadowshape. But the intellect will not let it seeexactly. When intellect is present, it will erasethe exactness of the niddidhyasan.

Questioner: Then, what should I dowith that?

Dadashri: There is no problem. It isenough to get the shadow at least.

Questioner: Do we need to have animage during niddidhyasan?

Dadashri: Then only can you get His(Dada's) direct energies. Thus you can attainhis energies directly.

Say this to the intellect...

We should tell the intellect, ‘stay out fortoday. Let me finish this much work.’ Theintellect will interfere in this. The anesthesiathat doctors give before a surgical operation isto prevent the interference of the intellect. Ifintellect were to interfere, then the whole casewould be ruined. Likewise, I operate (GnanVidhi) after making a person unaware(surrender intellect) by stopping the intellectualinterference.

And we have to bring him (the relativeself) to awareness. So we have to tell theintellect, ‘for the rest of the day, stay outsideuntil 9:30 PM’. Then, when you go home, theintellect will meet with you. Then you can feedher (intellect). So can you not tell the intellectto stay out just for the day? Give it a holidayfor the day.

The subtle role of intellect in Gnan

Questioner: You have given the twoAgnas by which we have to see from therelative viewpoint and the real viewpoint. So acow by the relative viewpoint is a cow and bythe real viewpoint is Shuddhatma (Pure Soul). Please describe this vision in exactness.

Dadashri: I have given you thisknowledge of the Self. Did I give you the

Page 19: Against The Rioting Intellect

18 May 2006

DADAVANI

exact vision (drashti) or is it only a belief?

Questioner: You gave us the belief.

Dadashri: The wrong belief that existedbecame the right belief; that is all. There is nointerference of the intellect in this. Theunderstanding that, by the real viewpoint, oneis Shuddhatma, is possible through the intellect.Only when understood through the intellect, thevision takes hold. Then, what is the nature ofthis vision, the ‘seeing’? Can we ‘see’ (thePure Self) through these eyes?

Questioner: You mentioned that youcan see Shuddhatma in each and every livingbeing.

Dadashri: My state is different, andyour state is different. That cannot beexpressed. You have to find out why youcannot understand this with the intellect?

Questioner: I can understand that.

Dadashri: All intellectual people acceptthat this is possible to understand, then what isthe problem? Through the intellect the ‘vision’should exist, then the right belief and faith willtake hold. If you tell someone to do good workfor others in order to bind merit karmas(Punya) is he able to see that?

Questioner: No.

Dadashri: Everybody accepts that whichis shown by the intellect. Why are you gettingconfused about this?

Questioner: No, I am asking this so wecan find out more details about this viewpoint.

Dadashri: Fine then. Let us proceed. Then with these eyes, the five sensed formedcomplex (putaloo, live idol) is seen. With theintellect even more can be seen.

Questioner: Correct. And with Gnanthe total vision is there to see.

Dadashri: That aspect is very easilyunderstood. The other person may not be

convinced but this is convincing, is it not? If weask somebody to do good work and tell him,‘for this work you will bind karma of merit(punyai), he is able to understand this, night? Can he not understand with the intellect?’

Questioner: Yes, he can understand.

Dadashri: And if casually one simplysays, ‘Brother, God resides in everybody,’ theintellect will not accept it. The intellect has toaccept it first. When the intellect is not readyto accept, if I say, ‘God is in everybody, seeGod in everybody,’ it has no meaning. Suchapproach is meaningless. Such slick talk doesnot lead to this vision. There is nothing wrongin this statement however. It is better than notto say anything. And in fact God is in all livingbeings. It is not wrong to say that, however, until the intellect accepts, the desired result willnot come.

Conviction attained through Gnan andgrace

The highest satsang (the company of theSelf), it is to keep observing Dada (The GnaniPurush). If some kind of problem arises within, and you cannot understand, then you may askif it is necessary to ask. Otherwise, it is all anintellectual exercise and dreaminess. Theintellect expresses itself to show off.

Questioner: Dada, that which comes inthe darshan (vision, right belief); is it a propertyof pragna (the direct light of Self) or is it of theintellect (knowledge through the medium ofego, the indirect light of Self)?

Dadashri: It is that which illuminatespragna. Darshan means the conviction (pratiti)that I am the Self and the pragna. Thisconviction has to become established forfurther attainment of the full state of the Self.

Questioner: Who is established withthis conviction, is it the pragna?

Dadashri: No, it is not done by pragna. This Gnan is needed. The sustenance is done

by Gnan and by the grace of Dada Bhagwan(The Lord within). I give Gnan and by thegrace of Dada Bhagwan you experience thatin fact this is what reality is all about. The oldthoughts and beliefs existent until today arecut, are they not? So if you say this much, thenit will all be very good.

The intellect of young ones can beturned around whereas these elderly peoplehave a lot of veils (of intellectual interferences). All these youths will get ready very quickly(for maximum benefit of this knowledge).

Questioner: Can the veils of the elderlypeople be removed?

Dadashri: They will go away eventually, but they (elderly people) cannot take benefit ofthis Gnan like these young ones.

Questioner: Then what should we do?

Dadashri: What will you do? Yourintellect will certainly turn around. This intellect, that has now separated (after Gnan) will keepinterfering. It is simply not needed in this pathof liberation anymore. The intellect createsinterference all day long. This Gnan of ourshas brought forth the full direct light ofknowledge and therefore intellect is unnecessary.Yet, the intellect keeps on interfering.

With the grace of the Gnani onebecomes free from the bondage of

intellectQuestioner: Let us assume that my

desire is to proceed towards the Self by myown efforts. In this, I need to distance myselffrom the intellect so that I can see the real. Isthere a way to do this?

Dadashri: It is not possible to distanceoneself from the intellect. The one who isasking to remove the intellect that is the one,who is the friend of the intellect. Who is sayingthis? The best friend of intellect is saying this. The best friend of intellect is saying that, Iwant to get rid of the intellect. Besides, this

intellect will not move from that best friend, sonothing can happen in this.

Questioner: So should we not utilizethe intellect at all?

Dadashri: If you do not use intellect, itis the best. But one cannot stay without usingthe intellect. The light is on. The brightness ofthe light automatically leads you there. The useof the intellect is like that. The intellect is light;it throws light on the non-Self (par-prakashak).I am without intellect (enlightened Self) andhence there is no utilization of the intellect.

Questioner: How can I be rid of theintellect? In these sixty years of life, I havecollected this intellect from all directions andnow you say, ‘get rid of the intellect’. How amI to do this?

Dadashri: You do not have to remove it.I will do it for you. The One who is devoid ofintellect, can remove it.

The intellect will not shut off, even if youwant it to. It can only be shut off by the graceof the Gnani. Lots of grace is needed tobecome abuddha (free from intellect). A thiefdoes not like the daylight. Daylight bores him.He awaits the arrival of the moonlight to go outand do his job. Likewise, the intellect likesdarkness (lack of awakened awareness of theSelf) and it keeps interfering. It makes aperson emotional. Otherwise, the necessaryamount of intellect exists naturally by itself.

Solution to be rid of the intellect

Questioner: Dada, please get rid of theintellect of all these people.

Dadashri: Get rid of it? If you want todo it, it can be done. Whoever wants to do it,can do it. On one side, he says, ‘I do not wantto plant the millet’ and on the other he says, ‘Ilove ponk (rare grill roasted millet)’, so hecannot stay without planting, right? He lovesthe ponk! Can you all understand this thing alittle bit? This is a very deep matter.

Page 21: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

Questioner: Everybody has Gnan. Gnandoes not need to be taken. The intellect needsto be removed.

Dadashri: It is like this. If we haveGnan then we should remove the intellect.Once the intellect is removed then the work isdone.

Questioner: When will be the end ofthis intellect? When will it rest in peace?

Dadashri: Whether the intellect ends ornot, is immaterial. If we do not water it, it willdry up. When we do not listen to the intellect,it will dry up. If we listen to intellect in certainthings, then it gets nourishment (power). And ifshe is not nourished at all, then how long willshe survive?

Questioner: Even if we do not listen tothe intellect, she remains inside, does she not?Instead, should we not seek reconciliation withher?

Dadashri: No. If we seek equitablesolutions for her, then we have embraced heragain. Do not seek to come to an equitablesolution with her. Do not seek conciliation withher (intellect).

Intellect harasses and if you tell her thatI want to keep you, she will stay. You shouldtell her, ‘you have been very helpful to me inmy entire life. The whole life you have helpedme. I cannot forget and I am indebted to youfor what you have done. But now, pleaseleave, so that I may be free and you will alsobe free.’ This much we have to say. We mustsay this with respect for her. She has done afavor, hasn't she? Otherwise she will claim,‘you deceived me. Until now, I worked so hardfor you.’ So we have to say, ‘you have beenvery helpful, but kindly leave now.’ Go, shemust. Why are we removing this intellect now?Because the ego has been established at itsoriginal place (the Self).

We gave birth to this intellect; we are

the one who raised her. And now we are theones, who tell her, ‘Now you are not needed;now your work has been completed; now allyour duties have been accomplished. I thankyou for all your favors. Until now you havesettled everything, and maintained everythingvery well.’ She's maintained very well, right? So tell her, ‘you have maintained all, so I thankyou. Now there is no need for you to maintainanything.’ Now the abuddha state will takeover the maintenance.

Questioner: When one does not listento the intellect, then indifference arises, right?Or will the intellect revolt?

Dadashri: To follow or not to followwhatever the intellect says, in both the situations, the presence of indifference is the state ofbeing free from attachment or abhorrence.

Questioner: Please do a vidhi (silentauspicious blessings performed by the Gnanifor the salvation of the disciple) for me to endthe role of intellect.

Dadashri: Yes, but that intellect isslowly coming to its end. If your decisionswaver then the intellect will take over its rulewithin. If you remain firm and alert, then howdare the intellect arise and scream? The mind(mun) and intellect (buddhi) are mere assistants. When ego and intellect fade away, Gnan

shinesQuestioner: So does Gnan become

manifest in proportion in intellect?Dadashri: After attaining this Gnan, the

intellect will keep on decreasing. This scienceis such that, it will make the intellect go down. This is because abhorrence (dwesh) leavesfirst. This vittadwesh (void of abhorrence)state is always associated with further declinein the interference of intellect. This leads tofurther spiritual progress in the awakened(Gnan) state.

Questioner: It has been said, ‘Give a

Page 22: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

send off to the intellect.’ What is meant by that?Dadashri: Because of this intellect, the

ego persists. Because of the ego, worldly lifeexists. When the intellect and ego cease thenthe path of liberation, the light of knowledgewill manifest. Absolute knowledge of the Self!!

You have attained Gnan (knowledge ofthe Self), but it is the limited knowledge of theSelf (who am I?) only. And then as theintellect subsides, its utilization decreases, thisknowledge will increase leading up to Absoluteenlightenment (Keval Gnan). As the egodecreases (the residual layers of ego after Selfrealization), the absolute knowledge will express.I do not need to use intellect. I am abuddha(without intellect).

Questioner: Now, we are still in thelayers of the intellect, right? When we reachthe end point of intellect, is it only then thatabsolute enlightenment happen?

Dadashri: No the intellect will meltgradually by itself, as the ego keeps decreasing.Currently, are you convinced that, ‘I am notdoing any of this, I am not the doer?’

Questioner: Yes, that has begun toestablish in my understanding.

Dadashri: That understanding decreasesthe ego. As the ego decreases day by day, theintellect decreases. Solution will come on itsown. You do not have to do anything. The fivesentences (Dadashri’s five Agnas), which Ihave given, will bring forth all solutions.

Bliss overflows after the demise ofintellect

Dadashri: Who becomes one with theworldly self (tanmayakar- to become the mindand the body) here? Raise your hands. Sevenor eight only! (In a hall filled with mahatmas).Tell me brother (addressing the one who hasraised the hand), what do you experience atthat time?

Questioner: I do not become one with

the body and the mind (tanmayakar), but I doseem to become the shape and form of theworldly self (tadakar).

Dadashri: Seemingly becomes theworldly self! To indeed become the worldlyself is another matter all together! That is to beengrossed as the worldly self (tan-maya-akar,to become the body and the mind; to becomethe illusion, the maya). When one becomesengrossed, then it is like being under the entirewaterfall. Now (after Gnan) it only seems so(tadakar). Now some amount of intellect hasgone. As the intellect vanishes there will beever increasing bliss. This that I have givenyou is verily the abode of bliss. I have givenyou moksha. That intellect, which used to helpyou in your worldly life, is the one that is nowinterfering.

Questioner: This happiness is notreactionary. Here, are we experiencing asuperior happiness?

Dadashri: Superior means, it is theultimate bliss of the original Self. I had givenyou bliss only (at the time of the Gnan Vidhi)! But the intellect, which was making you big inthe relative worldly life, and making you leadtowards worldly prestige is no longer existent.

So much bliss has expressed! Thisamazing level of samadhi (state of beingunaffected in times of physical, mental orexternally induced suffering) is beingexperienced! Amidst this if the intellectmisbehaves, then we should tell her, ‘OhBuddhi, I will drop you off on the island ofAndaman.’

The grave danger of doubting the Gnani

You have been told not to utilize theintellect. I am abuddha. The intellect is not tobe used at all. Nothing new remains todiscover regarding the five Agnas. I haveexposed all facets of that for you. Nothing elseis left for you to know. Even then, the intellectwill arise, but you do not need to worry. The

one who has nothing to do will find somethingto do with his intellect.

All these are scientific methods. That iswhy Lord (Mahavira) had said that, all actions(karmas) of the Gnani Purush, bheda vignaniPurush (The One who has known; and is ableto separate the Self from non-Self) are divine.Do not let the intellect interfere in this matter.

Questioner: Very true. Never see thisthrough the intellect.

Dadashri: The Lord says, ‘The Gnani’skarmas are divine.’ What will happen if you tryto use your intellect here?

Questioner: The Gnan will vanish.

Dadashri: The Gnan will vanish, but inaddition he will be struck with the error ofseeing the fault of the Gnani (which willprevent him from any further help from theGnani in future lives). You must not see anythingwrong in this regard. How can you ever seethe fault of the One who has liberated you?Never harbor a single doubt in matters of theGnani, even if it comes to losing your life.Does your intellect behave in this regard?

Questioner: It behaves.

Dadashri: Does your intellect see anyfaults of the Gnani?

Questioner: Never.

Dadashri: Yes. Make this clear to theintellect.

Questioner: Absolutely. This is verycritical.

Dadashri: Otherwise, one would notknow what intellect should see or not see?Would it have any discrimination at all?

Questioner: Not at all.

Dadashri: There is great danger there.

Questioner: Yes, it is dangerous.

Everywhere it is treacherous.

Dadashri: Treacherous. It is better toslip in worldly matters as it will spoil only onelife, whereas, seeing the fault of the Gnani willmake you slip for infinite lives.

I am the body: I am the Self

Questioner: To be absorbed in the Selfis Atma-ramanata. Please tell us more aboutthis state.

Dadashri: What would you calldehadhyas (I am the body)?

Questioner: Bodily things (relativeparts) which we see, is called dehadhyas.

Dadashri: What will you ‘see’, in thebody?

Questioner: These external things, which we see.

Dadashri: All that you can see with theeyes. Whatever you can see with these eyes isnot called darshan (vision, right belief).

Questioner: How can one attain thestate of being the Self and remaining absorbedin the Self ( Atma-swaroop)?

Dadashri: Has dehadhyas left? Has theintellect, ‘I am the body’ left? This is theintellect that enforces the feeling, ‘I am thisbody’. Do you understand this concept?

Questioner: This body is separate andthe Soul is separate.

Dadashri: No, but your intellect thatenforces, ‘I am this body, I am this mind, I amthis speech’, has it left?

Questioner: Yes.

Dadashri: So as long as that intellectwas maintaining, ‘I am the body’, there waspar-ramanata (delving into the non-Self). Now(after Gnan) that absorption is gone andtherefore swa-ramanata (I am the Self) has

Page 24: Against The Rioting Intellect

DADAVANI

taken hold. Having been established as theSelf, you are asking a question about the Selfwhich is equivalent to a person eating a potatoand then asking what a potato is? Then, is thata question or an unnecessary discussion?

Questioner: It is languor of speech, and playing with words.

Dadashri: No, now he is not speakinghaving understood the concepts. When hespeaks after having understood, then it isplaying with words for intellectual gratification. But he is asking out of true curiosity and desireto know, then it is all right.

When one is not absorbed in the Self,he is absorbed in the relative world, the bodystate. And when he is absorbed as the bodythen he cannot be here as the Self. It can onlybe in one place at a time. Either here or there!

Dada (The Gnani Purush) remains withinyou, (isn't it)?

Questioner: Always.

Dadashri: That Dada is verily yourmanifest Soul and only that Dada resideswithin. What you see, are mere empty boxes, all packages! Those who believe the packagesto be real, and that intellect which sees it asreal is the reason for the continued worldlyexistence.

Questioner: Therefore it means thatthe intellect is only concerned with, ‘I am thisbody’, isn't it?

Dadashri: Intellect has connection with,‘I am this body’ only. There is no otherconnection. It says, ‘I am this body, I amChandulal.’ It does not have any assertionabout the Self. When it asserts that ‘I am theSelf’, then one has come home and that ismoksha. When it asserts, ‘I am the body’, thenworldly life continues. Therefore when theintellect comes over to the Self, all work isdone.

Surrender the intellect

Questioner: The intellect does notinterfere as much now. The intellect used toget excited and interfere, but now she hasbecome obedient. I tell the intellect, do not stayfar like a stream, come home to the ocean.

Dadashri: Yes, surrender it. Let go of it.

Questioner: Then, does the intellectbecome obedient again?

Dadashri: No, it is such that, eventhough certain part of it becomes surrendered, some of it will arise and bother you. So youhave to have the deep inner intent (bhaav) ofsurrender. You have to tell her, ‘you have donea lot for me, so now I have to compensate you.Whatever you need, just ask for it. Sooner orlater we will have to separate.’ Thus I becameabuddha. How did I become abuddha? This isthe way for you to become abuddha. There isno final liberation without becoming abuddha.

Questioner: I have left the intellect onone side.

Dadashri: If you leave intellect on theside, this world will run very well for you.

To become Vitarag…

When can we say that Gnan has manifestin all its glory? When vitaragata (the state oftotal detachment, absence of attachment andabhorrence) manifests. When does vitaragatamanifest? When one develops a negativeattitude towards the intellect. All theseconnecting links of spiritual knowledge have toarise within, (isn't it)? Our Gnan is such that ifone becomes aware of the role of intellect, theintellect will gradually melt away. Alas! Ourmahatmas still use the candle light of intellectwhen they have within them the full light of theglorious sun! My dear, use this sun light of ourGnan which illuminates the Self as well as allthat is the non-Self.
