Central Illinois RingsWith the Sounds ofYouthful HarmoniesE n rollment was limited to 250 young womenand 150 young men, after the overw h e l m i n gresponse to the festival invitation. Seventeenhigh schools participated under the enthusi-astic and able direction of clinicians Kare nG reer and Ben Ayling. Begun as the brain-child of Rich Hansen, the Illinois DistrictYoung Men in Harmony coord i n a t o r, the festival has grown annually with many repeat attendees.

Students learned four songs to perf o rm withthe assistance of the Heart of Illinois andVe rmillion Valley chorus members of SweetAdelines International. All four were p e rf o rmed in a public concert that evening. As one observer noted, “If the day was fun,the evening perf o rmance was even better!

K a ren (and the section leaders) had wornthemselves out during the day, trying to getthe girls to ‘get their noses out of the music’and to move and smile while singing. Thee ff o rt was worth it! On the evening show thegirls all perf o rmed without music, theysmiled and they moved!”

Evaluations of the day were all positive andincluded the following observations: “What aG R E AT job your clinician did! Karen Gre e rb rought her talent and gave her all for thoseyoung women! She chose good music, wasw e l l - p re p a red, and she taught good vocalp roduction as well as conveying the joy ofsinging four- p a rt harm o n y, barbershopstyle.” Judy Ferr i e r, YWIH Festival c o o rd i n a t o r, Heart of Illinois Chapter, SweetAdelines Intern a t i o n a l .

On the evening show the girlsall performed without music, they smiled and they moved!

Written by Cindy Gilmore (UN D E RAG E M o m )

I’m here to tell you about a young quart e tthat takes this musical art form very serious-l y. Their name is UN D E RAG E, and they are !They range in age from 14 to 17-years-old,but don’t discount their abilities. These girlshave been working together diligently for thelast two-and-a-half years. They have beencoached and mentored by Martha Segura ofRA Z Z C A L S, a Sweet Adelines International top10 quartet, and a whole host of barbershoppersonalities. They have grown in theirunderstanding and delivery of the barber-shop sound and entertainment style. Yes! they even know how to do the hair and make-up. UnderAge has placed firsttwice in Region 12’s Young Women inH a rmony competitions.

Earlier this year they decided to enter the“Big Girls” world, and compete in Region1 2 ’s adult (Sweet Adelines International) competition in Sacramento, Calif. They set a

personal goal of trying to get close to top10. The girls’ draw number was 27, whichmeant they had all day to get re a d y, re l a x ,eat, and even watch a movie. Their timecame, the announcer said, “Close thedoors,” and introduced UN D E RAG E. Sincethey had no expectations, they entered thestage fairly relaxed. They knew theirmaterial, and were just happy to have thechance to go out and entert a i n .

The support of the crowd was o v e rwhelming. The girls did their personalbest and walked off the stage content. When the competition ended, they re t u rn e dto the stage with the other 28 quartets. Itwas an awesome and colorful sight. Thetime came to announce the top five medalists. A hush came over the auditoriumand the awards began. The emcee calledout fifth place – UN D E RAG E! The girls, in totalshock, bounded down the risers and

gleefully accepted their green medals. This is onemoment in time that will forever be burned into theirm e m o r i e s .

Members of Sweet Adelines International have been sofaithfully supportive of UN D E RAG E and have believed intheir potential. These girls have learned so much overthe past couple of years and continue to grow in theirlove of perf o rming. Sweet Adelines is a hidden goldmine for vocal performers. The education that is sof reely available is magnificent.

In July UN D E RAG E became the 2005 Rising Star Champion at IES.

If your vocal group is looking for a fund-raising activity, let me suggest singingvalentines. Valentines Day is the daywhen the halls of Syosset High School,Syosset, New York, are filled with strainsof You Light Up My Life or Heart of MyHeart, and students walk around with BIGsmiles on their faces. It is a massiveundertaking, worth every moment spentin preparation, and an excellent fund raiser (we sold over 300 singingtelegrams last year!).

This plan has been refined over the lastsix years. We learned what to do and notdo along the way. The event has nowbecome a classic. Here is how we planfor this day:

First: Music is taught to the Adelettes(our female barbershop group), and tothe boys in the choral program able tosing in four parts a capella. It is essentialthat the quartets/octets going around tosing to students are excellent, in-tunesingers, because we are also advertisinga product — barbershop harmony!

The songs selected for the Adelettes areabbreviated versions of My Romance(The Eyes of Love), the Theme from IceCastles, and I Wish You Love (at leastone of these is used for the Adelettesaudition in the spring). The boys aretaught Heart of My Heart, Honey Lil’ Lizaand the tag Give Me Your Hand to Hold inMine, and I Will Give You My Heart.Individual voice part tapes are made for

each student, and learning starts rightafter the Christmas vacation.

Once the music is learned, quartets areformed based on blend and personality.(Sometimes I double parts if a singerstrays a little when alone!)

Second: We need singers available to gointo classrooms during a nine period day. Each student must get permission fromhis/her classroom teacher, assuring availability for that time period. If a complete pre a rranged quartet isn’t possibleduring a certain period, other combinationsare created. Each student fills out a sheet, checking off either “yes” or “no” for eachof the nine periods. This is all doneBEFOREHAND! In the music office there isa huge poster board listing the availablequartets for each period.

Third: We inform the teachers of our plans(each singing telegram takes between 1-2minutes of class time to deliver), and askthem to check off any periods they doNOT want interrupted by singingtelegrams. There will always be someteachers, who because of class content,or class make-up, are unwilling to havetheir classes interrupted, and they doappreciate being asked.

Fourth: One week before THE day, wehave a tape played over the morningannouncements letting all know that we are “open for business.” The tapedannouncement starts with strains from one of the songs, and explains cost and

how and when to sign up. We sell singingtelegrams in the student lobby during allfour lunch periods up until February 12th(or two days before the selected day if the14th is on a weekend). This is also thetime to flood the walls with advertisementsso that there are constant visual remindersof the upcoming event.

Fifth: We assign various students to coverthe lunch periods and act as “sellers.” Wehave a tape playing to attract students tothe table. At the table there are forms thatrequest the following information: The purchaser’s name, the student who is toreceive the singing telegram, if thetelegram is to be sent with the name ofthe sender or from an anonymous admirer,if a rose should be included with thesinging telegram (we work with ourNational Music Honor Society, Tri-M, whodeliver roses on this day; a rose alone is$3, a singing telegram alone is $3, andthe combo-plan is $5), and last and MOSTimportant, a listing of at least TWO classesthat the telegram can be sent to. The purchaser needs to include the period, theclassroom number AND the teacher (incase the number is wrong!). The reason forat least two choices of delivery is that 1) the teacher may have requested nointerruptions; 2) the teacher may beabsent and the class not there; 3 ) the studentmay not be in that class for any number ofreasons. Although we officially close offsales two days before the 14th, we dotake last minute requests (as long as wehave completed all other orders.)

Page 21: AGE A Stop On Their Way To The Top November YWIH.pdfspent many years as director of ... (Feelin’Groovy) • #MS0100 Ain’t Misbehavin’ ... the Student Songbook and an introductory

Fall 2005 / Rising St a r21

Sixth: When the available quartets and therequests for the singing telegrams are allg a t h e red, the master plan gets coord i n a t e d .All requests for telegrams are checked firstto see if the teacher has given permission.A master schedule is posted for each period listing the quartets and where theyare to go. It is possible for a quartet todeliver 8-9 telegrams in one period.

Girls sing to boys, boys sing to girls. Thestudents love performing. They enter ac l a s s room, surround the student, and re a l l yham it up! Each quartet reports back afterdelivering the telegram, and crosses it offthe master list so that we know it has been sent. Sometimes a class will buy atelegram for their teacher, and vice-versa.We give freebies to the custodians andnurses — the people who are most oftentaken for granted.

We also do “phone delivery.” Many facultymembers, and even some students, wantus to sing to their wife, husband, mother, etc., at work over the phone. They tell usthe best time to call, and we have quartetsavailable to do the phone requests (eventhe Superintendent called to request asong for her husband!).

Creating the master plan has gone frombeing an all-nighter for the officers to acomputerized program of sorts that canbe done in 3-4 hours (well, maybe a bitlonger). Once organized, the pieces allseem to fall together and there is a flow tothe process. One more detail: be sure tohave enough pitch pipes — one for eachtraveling quartet and a few extras just in case.

This event is a real recruiting agent for thechoral program in general, and for theAdelettes in particular. To witness an entireschool transformed into a caring community, with strains of four-part harmony comingfrom every direction makes it worth all thehard work. I hope you’ll try it — it has really become the best day of the year forthe Adelettes.
