HYPERBOLE – What is it?

Hyperboles are exaggerations to create emphasis or effect.

• AKA: Intentional exaggeration

HYPERBOLE – CITR EXAMPLE

“He’s in Hollywood. That isn’t too far from this crumby place, and he comes over and visits me practically every weekend” (pg 3).

ITALICS – What is it?

[For the purpose of this unit]

Used to emphasize or contrast a word or words in a sentence.

ITALICS - Example

“He’s got a lot of dough, now. He didn’t use to.”

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS – What are they?

A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question that is asked in order to make a point.

A question with no expected answer.
