Essential Questions for 3.4.1

1. How are pedigrees used to track diseases?

2. Why does sickle cell disease run in families,

yet is not present in every generation?

Activity Objectives – 3.4.1.

1. Analyze the gel electrophoresis results

obtained from the Restriction Fragment

Length Polymorphisms of Anna Garcia’s

family members

2. Create a pedigree for Anna Garcia depicting

the occurrence of sickle cell anemia within

her family

Patterns of Inheritance

• Genetic diseases and other phenotypes can be

traced back through a family’s medical history

• This is useful as it can help healthcare

professionals assess the probability of a

person having a genetic disorder

Page 7: AGENDA for 03/03/14 - Weeblyjohwang.weebly.com/uploads/1/0/8/7/10876267/03-04-14_pbs.pdf · AGENDA for 03/03/14 • AGENDA: 1. 3.4.1. Family Inheritance 2. 3.4.1. Online Conclusion

Pedigree Charts

• Pedigree charts show the appearance of a

particular gene through phenotypic

expression from one generation to the next

• Pedigrees only show the phenotype, not the

genotype.

• Often, particular symbols are used to

represent the sex of the person, the

relationships between 2 or more people and if

a person is expressing the particular

phenotype

Pedigree Chart Example

• This chart shows the presence of the rolled or non-rolled tongue. The non-rolled tongue is recessive. The blackened symbols represent those with non-rolled tongues.

Some helpful tips for analyzing

pedigree charts

1. If neither parent show the trait:

a. the trait cannot be dominant.

b. the trait could be recessive and either parent or both could be

heterozygous carriers.

2. If one parent shows the trait:

a. the trait could be dominant and the affected parent could be

heterozygous while the unaffected parent is not a carrier

b. the trait could be recessive and the affected parent is homozygous

while the unaffected parent could be a heterozygous carrier

3. If both parents show the trait:

a. the trait could be dominant and both parents could be heterozygous

carriers which means that some of the children could be unaffected

b. the trait could be recessive meaning that both parents would have to

be homozygous and all the children would have to be affected

1. Refer to curriculum file for more detailed instructions

2. Refer to step 3

3. Analyze the gel in the curriculum file of Anna’s family members

4. If you forgot RFLP, go back to unit 1, and under 1.2.3 activity, click on Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism notes, and review the concepts.

5. Draw (copy) the gel onto your NB. Do not print.

6. Determine:a. Which members have sickle cell anemia

b. Which members have carriers

c. Which members are unaffected

7. Explain why you can to these conclusions.
