WHAT IS A SECTION?

A Section is the basic operating geographicorganizational unit of IEEE constituted by a minimumof 50 members for those who live/work in relativelyclose proximity to be served by activities that meet theirneeds and further the missions of IEEE.

A Chapter is a technical subunit of one or moreSections, or a Council, constituted by a minimum oftwelve (12) members of a Society concerned torepresent and fulfill the technical needs of the membersWho live/work in relatively close proximity.

RELATIONSHIP IMPEDIMENTS• While many Societies have some programs for their

Chapters, only about 1/3 of Societies really seem to take an interest in their Chapters.

• Societies only touch Sections through their Chapters and Sections do not normally reach out to Societies despite available links such as Region, Section & Society Chapter Coordinators.

• Many Chapters to not really communicate with their Sections.

• Sections sometimes co-sponsor conferences in direct competition with Society conferences with organizations that are outside IEEE. Who has the right to the intellectual property from these conferences?

The most important volunteers in IEEE are the Chapter Chairs because they have direct contact with the members & facilitate technical activities for the members.

They report technical & educational meetings in the L31 report as a technical activity measure

FINANCIAL RESURCES FOR SECTIONS AND CHAPTERS

• The Section receives $2,000.00 (Annual) for completing a minimum of 5 activities and maintaining a membership of at least 25 members

• The Section receives $3.00 (Annual) for each active member (M, S, A); $1.5 AF and $4 for SM,F.

• The Chapters receive $200.00 (Annual) completing a minimum of 2 activities and maintaining a membership of at least 10 members

FINANCIAL RESURCES FOR SECTIONS AND CHAPTERS - continuecontinue

• The Section receives a bonus of 10% (Annual) for the submittal of annual reports (Activities +Financial) on time + $200 additional if they complete more than 10 activities

• The Chapters with more than 6 technical activities receive additional $75

SAMIEEE or Section/Society Access to Membership Information, is a web‐based ad‐hoc query tool that provides member data to volunteers.Analyze data within your Section, print or export.The data includes – active IEEE members as well as members in arrears or inactive for up to three years.

Any approved volunteer Access is granted during the current Organizational Unit Officer Term year and renewed with the approval of the current unit Chair

Data Retrieved

Data retrieved in SAMIEEE is for “your” organizational unit only. It is also limited by your position. For example:

Region Director – will retrieve all members associated with their region.

Section Chair – will retrieve all members associated with their Section.

Chapter Chair – will retrieve all members associated with their chapter. If the chapter is joint between societies, it will contain members of both those societies. If it is joint between Sections, it will contain members of that Society for both those Sections.

Student Branch Chair – will retrieve only students within their student branch.

• Several organizations establish criteria which must be met to be recognized as a certified CEU provider IEEE is an authorized CEU provider through the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and has adopted its guidelines and criteria for all of its professional development programs

WHAT ARE THE IACET STANDARDS?

• Each activity is planned in response to educational needs which have been identified for a target audience

• Each activity has a clear and concise written statement of intended learning outcome

• Qualified instructional personnel are involved in planning and conducting each activity

• Content and instructional methods are appropriate for the intended learning outcomes of each activity

About GOLD

• IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) was created in 1996 as a membership program to help students transition to young professionals within the larger IEEE community. IEEE young professionals are automatically added to the GOLD member community as they graduate.

• The first ten years after graduation from university can be challenging for young professionals. Employment searches, new jobs, professional growth, career development, and life status changes are common experiences for many recent graduates. Going through these challenges can be daunting but IEEE members never have to go through these experiences alone or uninformed.

Problems and Concerns: Like all organizations, we're concerned about attracting and retaining active members.

Significant Plans for next year: In 2006, we will continue to have informative speakers at our chapter meetings, with a mixture of topics to appeal to people in industry, academia, and private practice. We will select an Outstanding Engineer, and we'll continue our local scholarship program for students planning careers in power. We will also continue to support the student chapters and our members will continue their standards activities. We will be host chapter for 2006 PSCE.
