WHAT IS A SECTION?

A Section is the basic operating geographicorganizational unit of IEEE constituted by a minimumof 50 members for those who live/work in relativelyclose proximity to be served by activities that meet theirneeds and further the missions of IEEE.

RELATIONSHIP IMPEDIMENTS• While many Societies have some programs for their

Chapters, only about 1/3 of Societies really seem to take an interest in their Chapters.

• Societies only touch Sections through their Chapters and Sections do not normally reach out to Societies despite available links such as Region, Section & Society Chapter Coordinators.

• Many Chapters to not really communicate with their Sections.

• Sections sometimes co-sponsor conferences in direct competition with Society conferences with organizations that are outside IEEE. Who has the right to the intellectual property from these conferences?

Chapters• Chapters have two “Parents”

• The Section (primary responsibility for finance)

• The Society (support and technical activities)

What is a Chapter for ?

• Provide services to local members– Bring information and knowledge– Be a Place for Networking – Be a Leadership Training Ground– Represent members interest at the Society

Chapters are where everything happens and activitiesmeet the members

Chapter ChairsChapter Chairs

The most important volunteers in IEEE are the Chapter Chairs because they have direct contact with the members & facilitate technical activities for the members.

They report technical & educational meetings in the L31 report as a technical activity measure

Why should the Society Careabout Chapters?

• Increased Technical activities for Members– Lectures, Workshops, Conferences, Social and Professional

events• Technical activities for “potential IEEE & PES members”

– Especially where IEEE is not well-established• Increased visibility of the Society

– its structure - its publications - its meetings• Resource for potential Society leadership

– Most BoD members and Society Leaders evolved fromtheir Chapter activities

• Resource for hosting Society Symposia & Conferences

WHAT IS A CEU?• Defined as 10 hours of participation in a

recognized Continuing Education Program geared towards professional development and training

• Used by an IEEE Member to maintain licensure

• TO BE WORTHWHILE IT MUST ADHERE TO A SET OF STANDARDS

Page 134: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

HOW ARE CEU’S BENEFICIAL• Provide an employer or prospective employer

information on education and training pertinent to professional competence

• Provide documentation to registration boards, certification bodies or professional organizations of continuing education efforts

Page 135: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

WHO ESTABLISHES THE STANDARDS?

• Several organizations establish criteria which must be met to be recognized as a certified CEU provider IEEE is an authorized CEU provider through the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and has adopted its guidelines and criteria for all of its professional development programs

Page 136: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

WHAT ARE THE IACET STANDARDS?

• Each activity is planned in response to educational needs which have been identified for a target audience

• Each activity has a clear and concise written statement of intended learning outcome

• Qualified instructional personnel are involved in planning and conducting each activity

• Content and instructional methods are appropriate for the intended learning outcomes of each activity

Page 137: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

IACET STANDARDS• Participants must demonstrate their understanding of the

learning outcomes

• Each learning activity is evaluated by the participants

• The entity has an identifiable unit, group or individual with clearly defined responsibilities for developing and administering learning activities

Page 138: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

IACET STANDARDS• The group has a review process in operation that

ensures that the CEU criteria are met

• The group maintains a complete record of each individual’s participation and can provide a copy of that record upon request for a period of at least seven years

• The group provides an appropriate learning environment and support services

Page 139: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

About GOLD

• IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) was created in 1996 as a membership program to help students transition to young professionals within the larger IEEE community. IEEE young professionals are automatically added to the GOLD member community as they graduate.

• The first ten years after graduation from university can be challenging for young professionals. Employment searches, new jobs, professional growth, career development, and life status changes are common experiences for many recent graduates. Going through these challenges can be daunting but IEEE members never have to go through these experiences alone or uninformed.

Does a Chapter Web site matter?

• Web sites are a window into your chapter

• Is your Chapter’s Web site non‐existent, out‐of‐date or sloppy?

• New members or relocated members will often first do a web search to locate your chapter to see if they want to become involved

Page 249: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

Does your chapter have a Web Site?

• Chapters with Web sites should verify that they are listed at:http://www.ieee‐pes.org/chapters/chapter‐home‐pages

Page 254: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

Web Masters

• Have a dedicated Web Master– Make it an official role

– Avoid a single point of failure

• Surprising little web design knowledge is needed

• Good opportunity for newer members to become involved

Page 255: Agenda-PES CCs Training Minneapolis 2010PES 2010 GM, Minneapolis July 25, 2010 #1 What’s New with PES, Structure, Trends Al Rotz, PES President #2 PES Chapters Overview Meliha B

Hosting

• Host is where your web site lives

• Typical Hosting options– IEEE provided

– Private hosting company

– Employer/University

Hosting

• Most PES chapters are hosted by IEEE through its Entity Web Hosting (EWH) service– Free of charge

– HTML, Wordpress, Web‐in‐a‐box

– Does not support Joomla or Drupal CMS
