6 FOCUS ITEM – SOCIAL INNOVATION Dr Julie Roberts, Global Giving Back Program Manager (International Directorate), provided an infographic on social innovation and provided Council with information on the University’s activities in the area of social innovation. This included an update on the University’s efforts to become the first Australian University to obtain membership of Ashoka U, a global fraternity that catalyses social innovation in higher education. Dr Roberts explained that social innovation looks for sustainable solutions for problems within the world, using human-centred design-thinking approaches to work with communities to identify ways to bring about deep, systemic change. The University has created curriculum-based opportunities through, for example, the Graduate Certificate in Social Innovation and the Gladstone Regional Social Innovation Incubator and also supports co-curricular opportunities such as The Big Idea Competition and the Student Leadership Program. The University is aiming to build its reputation as a social innovation leader and to create students who are socially innovative. Employers are looking for attributes including being creative, adaptive, collaborative, entrepreneurial and problem solving; these skills are encompassed within being socially innovative. Discussions followed on the Gladstone Region Social Innovation Incubator project, and Mr Jacques Planche, Bachelor of Business student, provided in-depth insight into the two-week project that included 12 other CQUniversity students travelling to Gladstone to meet with Gladstone industry, business and community leaders to pitch their ideas for social innovation to local leaders including the Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Scott Bowman, GPC chief executive Craig Doyle, and Gladstone Mayor Cr Gail Sellers. Members queried how the application of social innovation reconciles with the need for younger people to have financial security through employment. Dr Roberts commented that this concern is very valid and that change is required across board to assist with advocating that social innovation supports capitalism and can be profitable. It was important to note that students can secure project investors and that their projects need not be independently funded.

7 COUNCIL PORTAL PAGE – ACCESSIBILITY This item was deferred and is to be discussed at the meeting of Tuesday, 20 October 2015.

8 STUDENT OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

Mr Sean Peckover, National Occupational Health and Safety Manager, advised that reported incidents are investigated by the Occupational Health and Safety Unit with approximately 30% of reported incidents being student related. Trending student incident highlights include:

School of Medical and Applied Sciences – primary incident locations are students’ laboratories.

School of Nursing and Midwifery – primary incident locations are “off-campus” i.e. occurring while on placement.

School of Engineering and Technology – primary incident locations are workshops with causations commonly noted as “hit by” i.e. hitting hand with a hammer.

Increase in Work Integrated Learning – primarily in Allied Health Programs and subsequently more “off campus” incidents being reported.

The 2015 Occupational Health and Safety Operational Plan is a targeted approach with an online Occupational Health and Safety induction available through www.cqu.conceptsafety.com.au. The induction has been streamlined and standardised and has also been placed within Moodle. The VET student induction is located within the Fire Evacuation Program for access from any web browser. Members were reminded of the SafeZone free app which includes:

Help Alert; for general Help from the University Security Team

Campus Notifications; if there is an incident on Campus that requires you to take action

First Aid Alert; for when you need medical assistance

Check-in; for out of hours work, to check-In with Security, and

Emergency Alert; if you feel threatened or need urgent help (000 or Security).

In partnership with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, the University will be hosting four Young Worker Engagement Forums in October 2015 as part of Work Safe Month. These forums will be aimed at VET students in attempt to raise awareness of Occupational Health and Safety given that statistically this group has been identified as a high risk group. Dr Robyn Minchinton, appointed member of the University Council, emphasised that the University is very interested in student and staff safety and that it is very important that we have a safe campus for everyone.

9 ALLY PROGRAM Dr Gemma Mann, Coordinator, Ally Program, discussed the Ally Program which is a Student Success Centre-run program dedicated to creating a safe and supportive atmosphere for all students with a zero tolerance approach to bullying and discrimination. As part of this, the Ally Program promotes acceptance and understanding for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer students. Members were reminded that as representatives there may be times that students may reach out to Council members and that it is important that all students are aware that the Ally Program is available through Moodle. Contact details for Allies can be located through Moodle, the Student Portal, or on respective campuses.

10 24 HOUR STUDY FACILITY – LIMITATIONS Due to background information limitations, this item will be carried over to a subsequent meeting.

11 COUNCIL MARKETING The Council drew attention to the need for the Student Representative Council to purchase promotional material to raise the profile of the Council. Merchandise suggestions included clothing, wristband and badges. Discussion continued in relation to the Student Representative Council portal page with members advising that the some students are having difficulties accessing this page. The Council expressed interest in having a direct access link from Moodle sites to increase an active Council presence for students. The Council was advised that there is the opportunity for Council members/students to become bloggers for the University through the CQUniLife blog which is managed by the Marketing Directorate. At current there are ten student bloggers contributing to this area, however there is the potential to contribute to the blog on a freelancing basis for students interested in this space.

17 SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY Council noted the Social Media Policy.

18 ITEMS FOR MEMBERS TO RAISE Council were again encouraged to be members of their respective Campus Life Committees to be kept up-to-date with events and activities on campus. Ms Heidi Mureau reiterated that it would be beneficial for her as the Postgraduate Distance Education Student Representative, to obtain demographic information on distance students itemised by: level of study, location (country, state, city), distance from nearest campus/study centre, age, gender, enrolled program and any other information captured in the system to provide further understanding of the postgraduate distance students she represents in order to inform her decisions. Avoidance of precluding distance students was stressed, noting that there are some excellent activities and opportunities that don’t appear to be reaching distance students which could be improved. Professor Ian Findlay, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), advised that the heat map system may be suitable in detailing this demographic information.

19 NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Student Representative Council will be held on Tuesday, 20 October 2015 at CQUniversity Cairns.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

COUNCIL

COUNCIL PORTAL PAGE – ACCESSIBILITY

Meeting Date:    20 October 2015  Submitted by:  Mr Ryan Bird Deputy Chair

Action required:  For decision

Recommendation: That the Student Representative Council discuss both the negative and positive aspects of having our Student Council Portal accessible to both internal and external personnel and make a decision on this matter.

Issue: Having limited access to the Student Representative Council portal does not allow for the Council members to be recognised online outside of the university.

Background: As advised by Ms Maegan Swarbrick, Student Communications Officer, the decision to make the portal page internal is due to student details being advertised. Although preliminary discussions at the last meeting in August 2015 suggest that the Council are in agreement to now have this page available externally, publically promoting contact points may be an issues for future Council members and therefore should be considered.

Rationale: Promoting our student council not only makes it easier for students to find out information via a google search, it also allows for potential students when deciding on what university to choose, to have a look at the sort of things that are involved in CQUniversity such as the council. Creating a section over time that highlights the decisions and differences we have made within the University would be fabulous also as it will give a lot of credibility to the role. On items with advertising, I think if someone is elected into Council, they should be willing and happy to be the face of CQUniversity for their region and in particular be able to be searched externally. I would like to see students be able to type in to Google "Student Council CQU" and be able to see information on our Council and its members.

Consultation:

Ms Jana Paris, Coordinator, Student Representative Council

Ms Maegan Swarbrick, Student Communications Officer.

Conclusion: That the following options are considered and a final decision is voted upon:  1. A page similar to www.cqu.edu.au/studentleadership that outlines the role and functions of the Council and

then links to our internal site for more information. 2. Moving our existing pages to the public portal, similar to https://my.cqu.edu.au/web/student‐portal. This is

searchable via Google and allows us more freedom than the Corporate website which is governed by the Marketing Directorate.

3. Moving most of our existing pages to the public portal, but leaving the Members page in the private section to allow for privacy.

4. A combination of these options.   If it is decided that member details should be publically accessible, it is recommend that this is written into the

terms of reference.

Hi Jana,  As discussed, our options for improving visibility of the SRC portal page are:  Option 1 (my preference)  A page similar to www.cqu.edu.au/studentleadership that outlines the functions and benefits of the Council, then links to our internal site for more information.  Benefits – the site has a nicer look and feel. The site is connected to the corporate website. Searchable via Google.   Risks – we would be restricted to a small number of pages. The entire SRC site could not be moved to this platform.   Option 2  Moving our existing pages to the public portal, similar to https://my.cqu.edu.au/web/student‐portal. This is searchable via Google and allows us more freedom than the Corporate website which is governed by the Marketing Directorate.   Benefits – the entire SRC site can be hosted on a public platform. Searchable via Google.  Risks – look and feel is not as nice.    Additional considerations  If we decide on Option 1, we then need to decide if the remaining site should be public or private (including member details). My preference would be private.   Please note I will also have a vanity URL created, would you like www.cqu.edu.au/studentcouncil or are there other suggestions?    And as a side note – when planning your budget, it would be fantastic if you could factor in some boosts for your Facebook posts. These are approximately $30 each boost and ensure the post is seen by a wider audience.   Marketing will hopefully have the Instagram brief for Uni Games ready tomorrow.   Thanks for inviting me along to your meeting today. Hopefully my input was helpful.  Kind regards, Mae

NATIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM

Meeting Date: 20 October 2015 Submitted by: Mr Benjamin Brown Chair, Student Representative Council

Action required: For discussion

Recommendation: That the Student Representative Council to discuss the attendance of Ryan and Ben at the National Student Leadership Forum.

Issue: That Council members are made aware of learned experiences in attending the National Student Leadership Forum and if attendance of this forum is recommended for future Council/University students.

Background: The National Student Leadership Forum is focused on beliefs & values and how they are used in leadership. The forum involved receiving a large number speech’s the most notable of which were from; Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, The Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove, The Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten and The Premier of NSW Michael Baird. These leaders, along with many other politicians and dignitaries we had the opportunity to speak with, did not talk on policy or their next campaign move. They talked about their up brining and the events in their life that got them to the positions they are currently in. They spoke about how their values are challenged through leadership and how they have changed. The main aim of the forum was to outline the importance of holding strong to your values and how they were developed.

Rationale: To provide the Council with insight into this conference and learned experiences.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL REPORT

1 National Student Leadership Forum

1.1 National Student Leadership Forum Mr Benjamin Brown, Student Leadership Council (SRC) Chair, and Deputy Chair, Mr Ryan Bird, attended the National Student Leadership Forum held in Canberra on 17-20 September 2015. Keynote addresses were received in Parliament House from notable guest speakers including: Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull, The Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove, The Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten and The Premier of NSW Michael Baird. The Forum focused on belief and values and how they are used in leadership. Benjamin and Ryan advised that they had the opportunity to personally speak with a number of politicians and other dignitaries who discussed how events in their lives led to the positions held and how their values are challenged through leadership.

“The main aim of the forum was to outline the importance of holding strong to your values and how they were developed. Personally I had already outlined my values long before going to the forum, so instead of grounding my values I was able to develop upon them and recognise where I am best able to use them for the University and wider community,” Benjamin commented. Ryan stated "The National Student Leadership Forum was an unbelievable experience that I was extremely fortunate to attend. The forum was centred around faith and values, therefore we were all encouraged to consider what faith and values we possess and how we use those faith and values in not only our decisions as leaders, but role models to the community. We were extremely lucky to be able to meet the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition and hear from them personally about the faith and values that they try to live by day to day when they make decisions at both a national level and as fathers of their families. A highlight of the forum was serving a low socio-economic community within Canberra where we were allocated to homes to carry out manual work and general duties. The theme for this was to understand that if we want to change the world, then we must be able to change and make a difference in the communities that we live in. The forum itself is unable to be summed up in words as simple it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The forum and the experiences learnt from the four days away is a feeling that can only be felt once attending. I have no doubt that everyone who attends this forum, past, present and future will be able to contribute to make this world a better place but to also develop and become greater leaders to the people they serve."

Several student and staff broadcasts leading up to and following the event were also completed in addition to a blog article featuring student testimonials (item 2.4). Print coverage was achieved in the Bundaberg News Mail and the Morning Bulletin in Rockhampton.

2.4 Student Testimonials - Australian University Games 2015

BRENT MITCHELL Sport: Rugby Sevens Studying: Bachelor of Secondary Education Campus: Brisbane Blog Entry: Being an optimistic student the idea competing within an event with such a high

calibre reputation was invigorating. Understanding it was the first time CQUniversity had participated within a decade also raised anticipation. I competed not only as a player within our rugby seven’s team but took on the responsibility of being coach. Despite having limited preparation due to our team coming from a variety of locations and a mixed level of talent and or experience, it was incredible. Not only did we form mateship within the team, we also made great bonds with other competitors, embracing the true event spirit.

My most memorable moment would have to be playing against one of the high performance teams and we had the best post-try celebration of the tournament incorporating some cricket. Playing in the Australian University Games (AUGs) has inspired myself and some of the players and already we are planning future goals. Right now we are undergoing negotiations with the university to launch a rugby 7’s program for 2016. Having a rugby 7’s program would allow us to do the following: flourish at next year’s AUGs, compete in other tournaments in Queensland, and build a university atmosphere amongst students. Personally I am already counting down the days to meet back up with my team and play because it is better than lego.

STEVEN TRIPNEY Sport: Triple Jump Studying: Bachelor of Exercise Sports and Science Campus: Sydney Blog Entry: I have to say from the outset I always felt 100% supported by the university. Jana

Paris, the University Team Manager was fantastic in providing me with all relevant information and always kept an open line of communication for any enquiries I had. Upon arrival Jana made sure that I had appropriate uniform and even went above and beyond to get a polo shirt for my wife. This was a big deal for me since having my wife and son with me was a non-negotiable and I wanted them to feel as much a part of the experience as I did. The hotel was accommodating for anyone who is in our situation where we could enjoy a week on the Gold Coast without having to contest with hundreds of other university students. That being said the social program sounded very well organised. On competition day I felt as though I was competing at an Athletics Australia run event. Volunteers were well prepared and ran the event well. Winning gold made me feel as though I was making a valued contribution to CQU which was good to do as they had gone to great lengths to help me prepare. The competition was a good opportunity to begin the summer season early and practice competing against other national level athletes. There was a healthy mix of those competing for individual performance and also those competing to gain points for the overall points tally for their university. To sum everything up my 5 days and 4 nights at University games was a family friendly, well organised, tremendously enjoyable, fully supported and competitive week. It made me feel proud to wear the colours and be a part of CQU. My wife's family are already expecting us in Perth next year and of course... I need to defend my title ha ha!

JACKSON HUGHES Sport: Men’s Touch Studying: Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science Campus: Rockhampton Blog Entry: Participating at the Australian University games for the first time, I wasn’t really sure

what to expect. However whilst we were the new players to the scene, we definitely left our mark. The CQU mens touch football side advanced all the way to the grand final, where we were narrowly beaten by Western Sydney University. Securing a team silver medal was a tremendous achievement. On top of this, Justin Cridland and I were also awarded the ‘Green and Gold' medallion for making the Australian Universities Merit team. This was a great honour to receive and it is a great feeling to know that I assisted the touch team to success in our first year. As well as this, I felt very privileged and honoured to captain CQU as a whole at the games; all of the players represented the University brilliantly. My advice for students wishing to compete in future years is to be confident in your ability and have a go! Uni sport’s organisation of the games is really well done, making it a great week of competition, meeting and socialising with around 7,500 students from across Australia.

TARYN GOLLSHEWSKY Sport: Discus Studying: Bachelor Exercise and Sport Sciences Campus: Bundaberg Blog Entry: It was fantastic to have fellow students representing CQU alongside me at the AUGs.

It was wonderful to experience the team environment with everyone being so supportive. I especially enjoyed sharing my success with my roommates Jack Frawley and Amy Rattray who came to watch my competition. It was certainly a more eventful and fun-filled Australian University Games this year in comparison to last year. Congrats to all involved!

MARTIN GREEN Sport: Cricket T20 Studying: Bachelor of Business – Management degree Location: Gold Coast Blog Entry: I’m Martin Hansen. I am at the tail end of a Bachelor of Business - management

degree with one course to complete. I have been studying via flex. I was a little apprehensive about throwing my name in the hat for the Australia University Games (AUGs) but as a mature age student (44 years old) and living on the Gold Coast, the venue for this year’s event, I didn’t want to finish my time at Uni with regrets. After several emails to Jana Paris, our team manager, I was selected for the T20 cricket. Rolling up on day 1 for our first game I didn’t know what to expect. Let’s just say that I’m no first class cricketer but after our first practice session I realised we were all of a similar standard. A large contingent of the team travelled up from Sydney and the rest of us from South East Queensland. My initial concern was how we would all get along but we ended up with a great group of blokes, easy going with a fantastic sense of humour. While our enthusiasm didn’t translate into glory on the field we had the best time and gave 100% (we can say that we won our final even if it was only the play-off for 9th and 10th). To anyone questioning whether or not they would be suitable for an event like the AUG my only advice is to do it. Experience all uni life has for you. As a flex student you often feel a little isolated but being in a team makes you feel like a valued member of university life. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to join one of the team or individual sports. Don’t let age or ability be a barrier. Create memories and friendships that will last for years to come. Thanks again CQU for the best time ever.

RAHUL VIJ – INTERNATIONAL STUDENT Sport: Cricket T20 Studying: Master of Professional Accounting Location: Brisbane Blog Entry: Thank you for giving me opportunity to share my memorable experience. It was a

week of extraordinary fun, excitement and happiness. I never thought that playing and sharing accommodation with people of different parts of the world can be this amazing. As an international student it is the best platform to show latent abilities or skills and also to see how great the sports environment and standards are in Australia. I would really recommend my international fellow students to participate and experience the Australian University Games. In the end I really want to thank CQUniversity staff for being so supportive and for providing us the most beautiful accommodation to all of us.

3 Student Experience and Governance Conference 2015

3.1 Student Experience and Governance Conference 2015 SRC member Kadambari Ravichandran participated along with seven other students in the student panel held at the Student Experience and Governance Division Conference in September 2015. The panel allowed our SRC representative to meet fellow students from varying cohorts and stages within their studies. The panel members convened prior to this event to discuss feedback and ideas about their individual student experience. Participating in the panel was rewarding for the students, allowing them a professional development opportunity in addition to providing feedback about their experiences directly to professional staff of the Division.

4 Next Steps 4.1 Senior Leadership Conference The SRC will be convening in Cairns for their next Council meeting to be held on Tuesday, 20 October 2015, allowing our student members to attend the official Cairns Campus opening and part of the University’s Senior Leadership Conference. Our Student Council members will also be participating as panel members in the Student Voice Panel in the Senior Leadership Conference on Thursday, 22 October 2015 and very much look forward to having the opportunity to be further involved with the University to represent the students of CQUniversity.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES

Meeting Date: 20 October 2015 Submitted by: Mr Shivam Sagar Student Representative Council

Action required: For discussion

Recommendation: That the Student Representative Council discuss promotion of sporting activities through the Student Representative Council (SRC).

Issue: Students are not really aware of the sporting activities and they are needed to be encouraged to participate in such games and events.

Background: Students enjoyed participating in the chancellor’s cup and Australian University Games but more students need to participate in such events and know about it.

Rationale: It was discussed and found during the Campus Life Committee meetings that the students want to have regular sporting events to be provided by the university. CQU Melbourne has currently formed its futsal team with 12 players and previously is having a very good cricket team. Sports for girls are to be introduced soon. Students are finding such events to be important and relaxing. But it is needed that the SRC should come forward and encourage students to participate. SRC can result to be successful for promoting CQU in such sporting activities.

Consultation:

Campus Life Committee

Melbourne Students.

Conclusion: It is recommended that the University allow SRC to promote such events and also help to organise some activities.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL AT ORIENTATION

Meeting Date: 20 October 2015 Submitted by: Mr Shivam Sagar Student Representative Council

Action required: For discussion

Recommendation: That the Student Representative Council discuss promoting the Student Representative Council (SRC) during orientation and also provide students with the information and role of SRC.

Issue: That the new students are not aware of SRC and its role at the university. Students find it difficult to settle and share problems in the starting weeks of their studies at CQUniversity.

Background: Previously SRC was introduced and promoted by the Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Scott Bowman during student forum and it was found that students were not aware of SRC much before that. After the introduction of SRC students came up with their problems with deep faith and belief.

Rationale: If SRC is promoted from start and students are made aware about its role then it is believed that students will feel backed with support and will have a channel to bring in their thoughts. Students can be given a short presentation or briefing about:

SRC and its role

Importance of emails

Use of UCROO

Student experience at CQU.

Consultation: N/A.

Conclusion: It is recommended that the University organise something for SRC during orientation day in order to achieve the above said points.

Not a good resource choice I'm afraid. I am considering changing universities next year due to the lack of resources. They teach and charge the same, and have better resources. I have raised this with admin and the academic staff, and have been told that I should change if not happy. Interesting.

When one has a time limit and really wishes to start and do well at study without the confusion and misunderstanding of the wording; set out of; and what seems to me to be an inability to look at it, the website and directions/instructions, from the point of view of the new student/users to the University. The next hurdle is enough, the one of beginning the course without the stress, frustration and being put off doing the degree that I felt in July. There were many times giving up was the best option, and I am hoping that this message can be taken seriously enough to do something about this, as many, I believe would have given up. And i ask you the question, is the beginning of study of a degree, and the introduction to a University, meant to be a huge challenge for the potential student? Is it meant to be a separating of those who do well at navigating complex websites,

SMS SMS is both an easy and effective way to distribute messages and encourage action. It is however a method that is used sparingly so as to not bombard stakeholders and annoy them. Usually this method is only used to remind stakeholders of important dates or to alert them to an emergency or other unexpected event.
