The following entries were given the Award of Garden Merit (H3) following assessment of the 2009 trial: Dahlia 'Exotic Dwarf' AGM (H3) 2009 (Single, Dwarf Bedder) Registered pre-1969 Trial no: Main bed 1, Container 1 Raised by Nuyens Sent to trial by and available from Mr W Gott, Sunnyside, Woodhouse Lane, Heversham, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, LA7 7EW Description: Plant height 60cm. Flowers 5cm in diameter, outer florets flat, pale pink-purple (75A-75B) with deep purplish red at the base (61A) . Central disc vivid yellow (14A). Foliage green (137A). Stems light green, lightly tinged with bronze and round in section. Assessment Panel comments: Has been consistently good at all 3 meetings. Flowers face upwards nicely. Very floriferous. Foliage compliments the flowers nicely.

Dahlia 'J.R.G.' AGM (H3) 2009 (Miscellaneous) Registered 2007 Trial no: Main bed 5, Container 4 Raised by J R Gott Sent to trial by and available from Mr J R Gott, 22 Summerville Road, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, LA7 7DF www.jrg-dahlias.co.uk Description: Plant height 81cm. Flowers 7.5cm in diameter, outer florets flat, velvety, dark red (187A-187B). Central disc very dark red (darker than 187A) with vivid yellow (c.13A). Foliage green much tinged with bronze. Stems dark green much tinged with bronze and oval in section. Assessment Panel comments: The flowers have a very good, rich, dark red colour which looks very attractive with the dark central disc and its bright yellow halo. Lovely dark foliage. Hides its dying petals well.

Dahlia 'Mayan Swan' AGM (H3) 2009 (Small semi-cactus) Registered 2007 Trial no: 43 Raised by K Stock Sent to trial by and available from Mr N Gilbert, Gilberts Nursery, Dandysford Lane, Sherfieldenglish, Romsey, Hampshire, S051 6DT Description: Plant height 169cm. Flowers 170mm wide; outer and inner florets white, with fine orange-yellow (165C) lines, blushed vivid reddish purple (74B) at apex, maturing to become white. Stem 1.0m, strong yellow green (144A), round in section. Leaves upper surface moderate olive green (137A), lower surface moderate yellowish green (136C). Assessment Panel comments: Wonderful with a spectacular number of flowers. A mass of flowers. Flowers have a wonderful cool colour centre.

Description: Plant height 130cm. Flowers 11cm in diameter. Outer florets distinct, separated and blunt, tip and base vivid greenish yellow (2A), bright orange-red to the centre (N30A). Inner florets brilliant greenish yellow (3A). Central disc 2.5cm in diameter, disc florets vivid yellow (14A). Foliage bright green. Stems light green lightly tinged with bronze and round in section. Assessment Panel comments: Has been excellent all season. Upright habit. Good foliage, quite dark in colour. The flowers hold their colour well. Attracting butterflies. Has also performed well in other parts of the garden at Wisley.

Flowers 10cm in diameter, outer florets flat, very light purple (76C) with light purple (76A) veining. Inner petals incurved, greenish white (155C), tipped with light purple (80C). Innermost petals vivid reddish purple (78A). Foliage bronze. Stems dark green much tinged with bronze and round in section. Assessment Panel comments: The dark foliage compliments the pink flowers very well and it's very attractive. Has a very neat, compact habit and a very long flowering season.

Assessment Panel comments: Lovely dark green foliage. Marvellous rich colour flowers. Flowers consistently and was always flowering. The colour of flowers never faded. An amazing entry.

Flowers 8cm in diameter. Outer florets vivid purplish red (67B) paling to towards the centre with brilliant greenish yellow (6A) to the base. When visible, central disc 7mm in diameter, disc moderate yellow (162A) with vivid yellow (14B). Foliage bright green. Stems light green tinged with a little bronze/pink and round in section. Assessment Panel comments: A superb Dahlia. Very free-flowering. Has flowered persistently throughout the season and there are lots of flowers still to come. Very elegant and dainty. Neat, dark foliage. Flowers are very regular. Lovely soft flower colour and always a mass of flowers.

Flowers 11cm in diameter. Outer florets creamy white (155A), with light purple (N80C/D) at apex, touched pale yellow (between 3D & 4D) at base. Inner florets vivid purple (81B), shading to creamy white (155A) towards base, with light greenish yellow (1C) at base. When visible in older flowers, central disc 5cm in diameter, disc florets moderate yellow (163C) with vivid orange yellow (23A). Leaves mid-green (137A). Stem 1.5m, round in section. Assessment Panel comments: Beautiful flower form. Flowers sit nicely above the foliage. Masses of blooms. Unique flower colour. Very sturdy plants.

Rescind AGM

Not pleasing to the eye. Unstable - many flowers were all white or all pink rather than a mix.

Trial Notes Objective:

To assess, compare and demonstrate a range of cultivars, in the open ground, submitted by professional and amateur growers.

Cultivation:

To maintain entries in Trial for successive years, cuttings are taken from the plants already on trial during late September. When the shoots have reached 7.5cm in length they are removed as cutting material, making sure that the base of the cutting is taken just below a leaf node. Cuttings are rooted in modules of a peat free propagation mix, but most proprietary potting composts are equally suitable. Young plants can also be raised by placing several cuttings in a 15cm half-pot. The cuttings are kept under mist until they are rooted, usually in 14 to 21 days, and then potted up individually in 9cm pots. These are kept in a warm greenhouse under supplementary lighting until April. Cuttings are taken from these secondary mother plants in April in the same way as detailed above. Once rooted, these are potted up into 2 litre pots and grown under glass. The plants are "stopped", by removing the main growing tip, to promote bushy growth and are hardened off for 1-2 weeks ready for planting out in early June.

Preparation and Planting: The dahlia is a very accommodating plant that will grow well in most types of soil. The 2008 Dahlia Trial was grown on a south-facing slope on the Portsmouth Field at Wisley. Manure was dug into the planting bed in autumn 2008 using a tractor mounted spader. The plot was subsequently rotovated prior to planting. The soil on the site was analysed in mid March and fertiliser was applied in accordance with the RHS Soil Scientist's recommendations. Sulphate of ammonia was applied at 65g/sqm and raked into the surface. The plants were "stopped" by removing the main growing tip to promote bushy growth and hardened off for 1-2 weeks before planting out in early June.

Support frames were put in place for the larger growing entries which were planted side by side, approximately 60cm apart, through the supporting wire mesh. The mesh was gradually raised to provide support to the plants as they grew.

The plants were "stopped" again in early July to encourage the plants to bush out and hasten the development of the side branches that would bear the flowers. The plants were grown for garden display and none were disbudded. Dahlias are mainly healthy plants but occasionally they do succumb to viral disease. Infected plants are removed and destroyed. Dahlias are liable to attack by a variety of pests - aphids, caterpillars and red spider mite, which can be troublesome from July onwards and require control by approved sprays. Dahlias are also susceptible to mildew and precautionary spraying was undertaken regularly. Dahlias need regular watering to obtain the best results and all the plants had the benefit of a drip irrigation system. They were watered on planting and continued to be watered as necessary through the season.

Entries:

There were 108 cultivars planted in the main beds, and 21 entries in patio containers in this trial of Dahlias which were assessed by the Floral Trials Assessment Panel in 2009.

No flowering records were made this year. Findings:

Although no disbudding took place this year, it was noted that disbudding can often improve the flowering display with a number of the Dahlia classifications.

Judging:

Members of the Floral Trials Assessment Panel inspected the trial at Wisley on the 1st, 15th, 29th September and 15th October.

The Trials Assessment Panel considered the plants using the following criteria:

Society. Public Voting The trials received relatively few votes this year. Never the less the Dahlia trial was the most popular, receiving 64 votes between the 11th September and 25th October. The three most popular cultivars (with 4 votes a piece) were; 'Twyning's Revel' [Trial No. 196] (which was also the most popular choice last year). ‘Will’s Carousel’ [Trial No. 57] ‘Pooh – Swan Island’ [Trial No. 53]

D. 'Moonfire'

Group 1: Single–flowered dahlias

Single outer ring of florets, which may overlap, the centre forming a disc.

D. 'Ryecroft Marge'

Group 2: Anemone–flowered dahlias

One or more outer rings of generally flattened ray florets surrounding a dense group of tubular florets, which are longer than the disc florets in Single dahlias, and showing no disc.

D. 'Don Hill'

Group 3: Collerette dahlias

A single outer ring of generally flat ray florets, which may overlap, with a ring of small florets (the collar), the centre forming a disc.

D. 'Charlie Dimmock'

Group 4: Waterlily dahlias

Fully double blooms characterised by broad and generally sparse ray florets, which are straight or slightly involute along their length giving the flower a shallow appearance. The depth should be less than half the diameter of the bloom.

D. 'Dikara Midnight'

Group 5: Decorative dahlias

Fully double blooms showing no disc. The ray florets are generally broad and flat, or slightly twisted and usually bluntly pointed, and may be involute for no more than 75% of their length.

D. 'Blyton Softer Gleam'

Group 6: Ball dahlias

Fully double blooms, ball shaped or slightly flattened. The ray florets are blunt or rounded at the tips, spirally arranged, with margins involute for at least 75% of the length of the florets.

D. 'Will's Ringwood Rosie'

Group 7: Pompon dahlias

Fully double, spherical blooms of miniature size, not exceeding 50mm in diameter, with florets involute for the whole of their length.

D. 'Lakeland Sunset'

Group 8: Cactus dahlias

Fully double blooms, the ray florets are usually pointed, the majority narrow and revolute for 50% or more of their length and either straight or incurving.

D. 'Julie's Delight'

Group 9: Semi-Cactus dahlias

Fully double blooms, the ray florets are usually pointed, and revolute for more than 25% of their length and less than 50% of their length (longitudinal axis), broad at base and either straight or incurving.

D. 'Bishop of Llandaff'

Group 10: Miscellaneous dahlias

Any dahlias which do not fall into one of the listed groups e.g. Peony-flowered dahlias.

D. 'Anna Cozens'

Group 11: Fimbriated dahlias

Ray florets should be evenly split or notched into two or more divisions, uniformly throughout the bloom creating a fringed effect. The petals may be flat, involute, revolute, straight, incurving or twisted.

D. 'Juul's Allstar'

Group 12: Single-Orchid dahlias

Single outer ring of florets surrounding the disc. Ray florets are uniformly either involute or revolute.

D. 'Mayan Pearl'

Group 13: Double-Orchid dahlias

Fully double blooms, showing no disc. Ray florets are narrowly lanceolate and either involute or revolute.

Lilliput dahlias

A low-growing type of dahlia usually no more than 30cm in height having single, semi-double or double florets attaining 2.6cm or so in diameter. Especially suitable for borders or display in containers on patios.

Dwarf bedding dahlias

The use of “Dw.B” after the classification of a cultivar indicates that these are dwarf bedding dahlias, not usually exceeding 60cm in height.
