Trial Notes Objectives: To draw attention to the range of colour and form in tulips currently available in the UK and Holland. To assess which should be recommended for the Award of Garden Merit Entries: There were 49 entries in this trial, planted in open ground on the Trials Field. Entries were submitted by nurserymen from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Culture: A trial of Impatiens had previously been grown on this site and at the end of the flowering season in 2007 the plants were broken up using a flail. The plot was then sub-soil rotavated to incorporate the resulting organic matter into the soil and break down any cultivation pan that might have started to form. No additional organic matter was added before planting. Bulbs were planted on 24-25 October 2007, spaced 15cm apart each way in blocks of 25 bulbs for each entry. During the trial assessments, Sub-Committee members advised, where necessary, of bulbs that should be removed due to rot or virus. Flowers were dead-headed as necessary and fallen petals were cleared away to maintain the cleanliness of the site. Meteorological Report and Findings: December 2007 and January 2008 were both significantly wetter than the long term averages. However, January was also warmer and sunnier than average. In contrast, February 2008 was drier than average but also proved to be the sunniest on Wisley's records with 138.4 hours of sunshine - the long term average being 70.7 hours. March was again wet with almost double the long term average of rainfall. Although April was wetter than 2007, it was just above the long term average. It had also been colder than last year but still around average: in particular there were more air frosts. 2-3 inches of snow fell at Wisley on Sunday 6th April and the particularly stormy weather on Monday 10th April 2008 forced Wisley Garden to be closed to visitors and the Trials meeting to be cancelled.

May was drier than last year but still above average. It had been slightly warmer than last year and above average although there were some severe ground frosts and low air temperatures in the later half of the month. Despite the weather conditions, the plants performed very well during the flowering season.

Records: A record was made of the date of start and finish of flowering, the number of flowering stems per bulb and the number of blind bulbs in each entry. Judging: The Daffodil and Tulip Trials Sub-committee assessed entries in the trial, individually and collectively, using a scoring system out of 8 points based on the following criteria:

Maximum of 4 points for Constitution and vigour; Health; Foliage

Maximum of 4 points for Form and substance; Colour; Durability Improvement on similar cultivars was also considered.

29 April 2008 - Sub-Committee Trial Assessment After considering the cumulative scores on 3 June 2008, the subcommittee recommended the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to 9 entries.

Public Voting

The tulip trial was extremely popular with visitors to Wisley Garden and, with the help of the Wisley Trials Garden Staff, the Trials Office conducted a public vote between 22nd April and 11th May 2008. A total of 193 votes were cast. Please note that 'Ice Stick' and 'Pirand' were not included because they had finished flowering at the time of voting. The votes and comments were collated by the Trials Office and the top 5 favourite tulips as voted for by the general public were:
