As I travel New Mexico, I get to see a lot of amazing things, Tent Rocks, Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands and so much more! However, what really excites me is hearing from our 4-H members who are giving back to their communities. These efforts come in all different shapes and sizes from care packages for the homeless to teaching others about the dangers of drug addiction. All of these members have the same thing in common, a passion for the third “H,” hands. They meant it when they said, “I pledge my hands to larger service.” This year, encourage these outstanding individuals to submit an application for the National 4-H Youth in Action Awards. Not only do the four finalists receive scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the National 4-H Gala, they also have the opportunity to raise awareness for their causeand to encourage other 4-H members to give back to their communities.

Finally, I want to say, “thank you,” to the many 4-H Volunteers and Parents who are constantly encouraging our youth to make their pledge to the third “H” meaningful. You are all amazing! Applications open August 1st and applicants must be 15-19 years of age. She worked as a 4-H volunteer for 30 years by working on committees, working with the county 4-H ambassadors and taking leadership roles with 4-H Leaders’ Association events. She believed in the importance of giving 4-H volunteer leaders the professional development they needed to guide 4-H’ers. When she died in December 2018, after a brief battle with breast cancer, her friends and family established this award for other 4-H adult leaders in New Mexico, so that they could also grow their skills, confidence, and passion for the 4-H program. To nominate a volunteer complete the online form at https://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/adult-volunteer-leaders.html by September 1, 2019.
