Bell ringers are to be completed on index cards.

Write your first and last name and the date on the top line of the card.

Copy the question.

Write your answer.

After we discuss the answer, you will turn in your bell ringer.

What is the definition of geometry in your own words?

BELL RINGER

I CAN:

- Identify the symbols for points, lines, line segments, rays, and planes.

Page 3: AGS Geometry 1.1 Points and Lines in the Plane

IN GEOMETRY…

-You study the size, shape, and position of objects.-One way to make that study easier is to concentrate on the outline of an object.

POINT• The simplest of geometric figures.

• No formal definition.

• Represented by a dot on a piece of paper.

• Capital letters are used to name points.

• Has a location but no size or shape.

• Think of a point as a star in the sky.

LINE• Has no formal definition.

• Represented by a straight two-headed arrow.

• Endless in two directions.

• Named by any two points on it or a lowercase letter.

• Do you think of a line as straight thin wire or thread?

• A geometric line has no thickness.

PLANE

• No formal definition.

• Represented by a four-sided shape.

• Flat surface.

• Extends in all directions with no end and has no thickness.

• Named using capital letters.

• You might think of a plane as a page from your book or a tabletop.

COLLINEAR POINTS

• Points on the same line are called collinear points.

• Let’s look at the line from the last slide again.

• Points A, B, and C are collinear.

• Which three of these points are collinear?

LINE SEGMENT• If you draw a line between any two points, such as A and B, you have drawn a line

segment.

• Segment AB is the set of points A, B and all points between A and B.

• A and B are called and endpoints of the segment.

• AB is read “segment AB”

RAY• Another part of a line.

• A line with one endpoint.

• Think of a ray as a ray of light leaving the sun and traveling into space forever.

• A straight arrow is used to represent a ray.

• The symbol AB is read “ray AB”

KINESTHETIC LEARNING

• With your partner, complete the following index cards.

• 1. Draw the symbol for line AB.

• 2. Draw the symbol for line segment AB.

• 3. Draw the symbol for a ray.

• 4. Draw the symbol plane W.

• 5. Draw 3 collinear points.

• 6. On separate cards write the words line, line segment, ray, plane, collinear.

• Now… flip the cards upside down and enjoy a game of memory with your partner!

CAREER APPLICATION• Who uses lines, line segments, and rays?

• Architects

• Engineers

• Carpenters

• Sculptors

IN THE COMMUNITY• As you travel home after school, look for objects that could represent points, line

segments, rays, lines, and planes in the community.

• Make a list.

• Tomorrow we will share our lists.

• Let’s see who can find the most!

DAILY ASSIGNMENT• Textbook Pgs. 4-6/#1-20

• Very top of the page:

1.1 – I can identify the symbols for points, lines, line segments, rays, and planes.

• Top right of page:

Name/Date/Block

• For 1-19, you do not have to write out the problem.

• You must write your answer and circle it.

• Skip lines between problems!

• #14 must be a complete sentence!

• For #20, you must copy the chart and fill it in.

Page 19: AGS Geometry 1.1 Points and Lines in the Plane

DAILY ASSIGNMENT• Textbook Pgs. 4-6/#1-20

• Discuss page heading.

• Discuss assignment requirements.

• When you finish:

• Check your answers with Ms. Dee.

• Make corrections as necessary.

• Recheck answers with Ms. Dee.

• Place assignment in your binder.

CLOSING• Ensure that you grab your homework on your way out. It is due at the

beginning of class tomorrow.

• Discuss with your partner:

• List specific details about how geometry is used in the real world.

• Write your response in complete sentences and place it on the Parking Lot. Make sure that both of your names are written on the index card. We will discuss your answers tomorrow.

Reminder• Do not leave your seat until the bell RINGS.

• If there is extra time at the end of class, you may work on your homework and talk quietly.

• If anyone chooses to stand at the door before the bell rings, the entire class will stay TWO minutes beyond the ringing of the bell & passes will not be written.
