RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Rachael Jackson
Happy New Year!
Did you know that in Judaism, there are
actually four “New Years”! This is not as
much of a foreign concept as it first appears.
Think about our everyday life and all the dif-
ferent ways we mark the new cycles. For ex-
ample, the fiscal year for many organiza-
tions, including ours, starts July 1. The school year,
in most places, starts in September. Each of us has a
birthday, which begins a new year for us as individu-
als. And of course, the calendrical New Year of
January 1 which we just celebrated.
The four New Years in Judaism are not so differ-
ent. Many of us are familiar with the calendrical new
year of Rosh Hashanah which occurs in autumn (1
Tishrei) and we increase the year (right now we are
in 5776). We also have the new year for Kings and
holidays which happens in the spring (1 Nisan). In
the summer (1 Elul) we have the new year for tithing
for animals—essentially our tax year. And finally,
we have the new year for trees in winter (15 Shevat).
And that occurs this month. As we celebrated Rosh
Hashanah and New Year’s, so too we will celebrate
Tu B’Shevat. On Monday, January 25 at 2pm, we
will come together for a seder of celebration.
It might seem odd to celebrate trees and
fruits here when the temperatures dip below
freezing and snow might come at any time.
However, in Israel, this is the time for plant-
ing trees and eating the first fruits of the sea-
son. It is celebrations like this one which con-
tinue to remind us of our relationship to Is-
rael.
While we think about our connection to Israel, we
can also think about our connection to our closer
community of Hendersonville. So while we might
want to stay inside, this is still a time to give back to
our town. Martin Luther King Jr., said, “Life's most
persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing
for others?” We are taking that statement to heart and
partnering with other faith organizations for “MLK:
A Day On.” On Monday, January 18, we will meet at
St. James Church at 11am for an afternoon of com-
munity service projects. Please see additional flyer in
the Chai Lites for more information on how to sign
up.
I hope that each of us is able to find a way to honor
nature, to honor our Judaism, to honor each other.
May this month flower new connections for us all.
Warmly and with blessings
Rabbi Rachael Jackson

BROTHERHOOD REPORT
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As we begin the New Year, I look to 2016 for con-
tinued growth and solidarity within our Jewish Com-
munity. I see it also as a year for ongoing joy under
the spiritual direction of Rabbi Jackson. I find my-
self constantly amazed each time we do something
new and/or different at Agudas Israel. This past
month, during our celebration of Hannukah, Rabbi
Jackson included the children of our Sunday school
in Shabbat services. The sanctuary was jam-packed
with toddlers, school age children, and teens. How
wonderful it was to see these children learn and carry
out our traditions. I loved seeing the smiles on the
faces of not only the children’s parents, but the rest
of us, appreciating the beauty of a synagogue filled
with the voices of the next generation. I believe it is
so important that our children attend and be a part of
our Shabbat services. I hope the experience will en-
courage the children to feel enthusiastic about com-
ing and strengthen their resolve to continue our Jew-
ish traditions. I look forward to ongoing opportuni-
ties to share our Friday night Shabbat services with
these young people.
Wishing you all a new year filled with Peace, Joy
and Good Health.
Shalom.
Dr. Linda Perkel, President
We are slowly heading towards the quieter winter
season, although looking out my window as I am
composing this message, it hardly seems like we are
anywhere near the snowy December that is expected
around Christmas time. In fact, looking at the
weather app on my new Smartphone that I got as a
present for Hannukah, it appears that the tempera-
tures forecasted for the next two weeks will be in the
mid to upper 60’s. So it looks like we will have a
snowless Holiday Season.
Apart from this, the weather is great for playing
golf, and in fact this is exactly what the Brotherhood
did last Wednesday (December 9th) thanks to Mi-
chael Beckerman who reserved T- off times for the
“Agudas-it-gets” golf group at Cleghorn Plantation
in Rutherford. We enjoyed a good round of golf,
great camaraderie and some interesting (censored)
jokes over a nice cold brewski following the game,
before heading for home. There is lots of room for
more members (and even non-members) to join our
group, and I highly encourage any of you who have
some or a lot of experience and skill playing the
game to join us. Don’t worry about your scores. We
are not concerned about how well you play, as long
as you have a good time, and especially if you have
some good jokes to share.
Our next event will be the Brotherhood Shabbat
Services scheduled for Friday, January 15th, 2016,
led by Joe Kaplan, and Paul Vanek with Nancy Sil-
ver providing us with her wonderful cantorial voice
and yours truly strumming the guitar. The services
will be followed by an Oneg sponsored by Natalie
Zitnick. I hope you can all attend as it will be a fun
and enjoyable event.
As Alan and Bonnie Cooper are visiting their son
and future daughter-in -law in Hong Kong, our hik-
ing and Adventurers outings have been put on hold
until they return in January.
The camera club will also be dormant during the
winter, awaiting the return of Perry Reihs from
sunny Florida.
As you will be receiving this edition of Chai Lites
in January, I hope everyone had a great Holiday, and
an easy slide into the New Year. I furthermore wish
all of you a HAPPY, HEALTHY and PROSPER-
OUS NEW YEAR. Let’s all continue to work to-
gether to promote and create harmony, respect and
above all help establish peace for all, inside and out-
side of our immediate community, and to help those
in need at home and around the world.
Shalom, Michael Thorz, President

AGUDAS ISRAEL SISTERHOOD
Notes from Nat Our Sisterhood Chanukah Soup and Salad lunch-
eon was a great success. A huge thank you to all of
the ladies who made their fabulous soups! We were
so happy that we had a very nice crowd, along with
Rabbi Jackson and her Mother-in-law Elise, who
joined us for this truly enjoyable event. We went
around the room recalling Chanukahs from our child-
hood, some from our children's childhood, and just
wonderful recollections of Chanukahs past.
The congregational Chanukah dinner was such a
great success that we had to add a table at the very
last minute. We are going to have to do something

about people forgetting to RSVP for these occasions.
Regardless of that mishap, a very good time and a
very delicious dinner was had by all. A huge thank
you to the Brotherhood for frying up some very tasty
latkas. Sisterhood was very pleased to present gifts
to Rabbi Jackson, Susan LaRue, and Yolanda Ned-
wed in appreciation for all they do for all of us.
With the holidays behind us and all of the latkas
eaten, gifts opened, and good wishes given, here we
are with a New Year and a fresh start. Sounds good.
Sisterhood already has many ideas in the works. Our
old standbys such as the Fashion Show Luncheon,
Mountain Jewish Festival, etc. are already being dis-
cussed and planned.
Last year was a wonderful year for our Sisterhood
for many reasons, not the least of which was the arri-
val of our new Rabbi. Rabbi Jackson has given the
Sisterhood help, simply by adding the voice of a
woman, her thoughtful, intelligent ideas have been
very helpful.
Our January general meeting will take place on the
afternoon of January 25th in our social hall. This will
be a Tu B'shvat seder featuring fruits, nuts and wine
as is the custom for this holiday. The time for this
seder will be 2:00pm.
There will be much more information on all of the
Sisterhood events coming up in the Chai Lites in the
coming New Year.

ANNOUNCING... the next pro-
gram in our quarterly Friday night
Speaker Series...
This Speaker Series has two pur-
poses: one is to inform the congre-
gation about the impressive number
of organizations in Henderson County that provide
services to our residents and a second reason is to
provide opportunities for Tikkun Olam wherever
possible.
Our series will continue on Friday, January 22nd,
and the speaker will be an attorney from PISGAH
LEGAL SERVICES
WHO AND WHAT are PISGAH LEGAL SER-
VICES?
PISGAH LEGAL SERVICES is the only free
civil legal assistance available to individuals living
in poverty in Henderson County. The organization
helps children, families and individuals solve prob-
lems that affect their basic needs such as housing,
domestic violence prevention, and homelessness.
They also provide legal help to people who cannot
afford a private attorney.
Join us for Friday night services on January 22nd
for an informative evening about legal services in
our county.
Another Friday night speaker will be scheduled
for April.

Stolperstein
in Wuppertal
My parents, grandparents, great
grandparents and other family
members lived in the small Ger-
man city of Wuppertal until the
Nazis made life a misery for them.
My parents left Germany for the
USA in August 1938 and my
grandparents left for Palestine, in
the spring of 1939, to join their son. Some other rela-
tives managed to escape but some did not. Those
who refused or could not leave suffered the conse-
quences and perished.
My sister and I grew up hearing about the places
familiar to our parents, starting with the famous
monorail train (schwebebahn) and, of course, the
clothing stores they owned. We also heard the hor-
ror stories of events in Germany. Tales of Krystall-
nacht, Nov. 9th, 1938, told of madness and fear and
the destruction of their synagogue, the Rabbi's
dwelling and Torah scrolls. My grandfather spent 3
days hidden in a cave with his brother, playing cards
and drinking schnapps. A Christian farmer had hid-
den them and gave the "all clear" when it was over.
Another true friend of my great uncle Ernest, was
the Wuppertal Chief of Police, who had warned
them to leave town and hide. They had served to-
gether in WWI and he remained a loyal friend. In
the interim, the Nazis came to my grandparent's
home and searched for my grandfather.
Luckily my Great Aunts had come to spend the
fearsome time with my grandmother and brought my
young cousin Ursula along. She had a temperature
due to a Typhoid inoculation she received in prepa-
ration for their hoped for departure to East Africa.
...When the Nazis asked my grandmother "Why is
the child in bed? What is wrong with her?" My ter-
rified grandmother, fearfully stammered "Typhoid -
-" and did not add inoculation to her explanation.
The men left in a hurry anxious not to be exposed.
All the women’s money
and jewelry had been
hidden in their pocket-
books under my cousin's
blankets. Her fever
saved the day. My
Great Aunt, Erna's
brother, Dr. Richard
Salmon was murdered that
night, beaten to death. His
wife, Bertha Salmon died in
a concentration camp.
...Several years ago I con-
tacted the local university in
order to find details about
Wuppertal’s Jews during
that era. I began an email
communication with a Pro-
fessor, which eventually re-
sulted in his telling me that
Wuppertal intended to place a memorial plaque for
my great- grandmother in front of her former home
and place of business. It is called a "stolperstein" or
stumbling stone. The date selected was November
24th, 2015 at 11 AM with the Mayor present to
make a speech. So my sister and I and our spouses
decided we had to be there. One Israeli cousin (the
next generation and his wife and two sons), now liv-
ing in England joined us.
...The amount and detailed information about our
family was quite impres-
s ive. Fol lowing the
speeches and the placement
of the plaque, we were in-
vited to a late afternoon re-
ception at the offices of the
Treasurer (a banker) of the
committee. We gave Herr
Dr Brusten documents and old photos, which they
were happy to add to their archives. We spent one
more night in the town of our forebears. After see-
ing the empty lot where our grandparents once lived,
we viewed a large plaque near the former synagogue
and visited the very well done museum on that site.
Then we took a ride on the famous train along with
my cousin, his wife and his 12 and 15 year old sons.
...50,000 of these metal
plaques (stolperstein) have
been placed all over Germany,
and other countries are copy-
ing the idea. Since our great-
grandmother was murdered in
Theresienstadt, she had no
tombstone. At least she now
has a marker with her information on it so people
will see it and know that once a Jewess lived in this
location, named Friederika Hamm, who was mur-
dered by the Nazis at the age of 87.
