July brought together a new Board of Directors for

Agudas Israel Congregation. We gathered together

for our first meeting in the sanctuary in order to re-

mind ourselves of the meaning of the work we will

be doing. We acknowledge, first and foremost, our

job is to keep our place secure as our Jewish home

and assure that our congregation will be there for the

generations that follow us.

I feel very positive about the coming year. We are

energized by the new members coming into our con-

gregation, by the programs and activities ongoing

and planned, and by our Rabbi who inspires us in so

many ways.

All that we do, all that we accomplish, is done by

you, our members. The way that occurs is through

the work of the committees. Committees are the life-

blood of the congregation. Our current committees

include Membership, Ritual, Caring, Security,

House, and Fundraising. I encourage you to consider

your own interests and expertise, and to see which

committee is the best fit for you. If you have any

questions or ideas please don’t hesitate to speak with

me. Committee participation is a bond that keeps us

together, fosters relationships, and ultimately helps

us accomplish our goals.

Shalom.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Teri and I returned from a great time with our fam-

ily in NJ who helped us celebrate our birthdays. I am

not going to mention any references to ages so as to

preserve my healthy relationship.

During my absence, I missed a couple of important

events, and would like to thank my BOD for step-

ping into my shoes on June 26th to conduct the

Brotherhood Meeting and the same day, to present

our report and the donation of $1500 to Agudas Is-

rael during the general meeting.

We are pleased to see many of our Brotherhood

participants renew their memberships and wish to

welcome them back to our organization, as well as to

welcome some new members who have recently

joined both the AI Congregation and Brotherhood.

Also thanks to everyone who has most generously

included additional donations to Brotherhood to help

finance our projects during the upcoming year.

[It] is the moment of turning, the

moment we turn away from denial

and begin to face exile and alien-

ation as they manifest themselves in

our own lives—in our alienation and

estrangement from God, in our alien-

ation from ourselves and from oth-

ers. Teshuva—turning, repentance—

is the gesture by which we seek to

heal this alienation and to find at-one

-ment: to connect to God, to recon-

cile with others, and to anchor our-

selves in the ground of our actual

circumstances, so that it is this real-

ity that shapes our actions and not

just the habitual and unconscious

momentum of our lives.

In between all the festivities, and there are many,

we should each take some time to reflect about our

true reality. We should take the time to look at the

relationships in our lives and see that we are bring-

ing meaningfulness to them. We should take the

time to look into ourselves and slowly start the inter-

nal conversation of turning, of teshuva. For all the

other conversations we will have in the coming

month, and we will have plenty, I hope that this can

be among them.

May you have an enjoyable and meaningful

month!

With blessings, bivracha

I am very excited to have the opportunity to be the

President of Agudas Israel Sisterhood. I have a great

Board made up of hard working women.

We have a very exciting month of August planned, be-

ginning with our annual Fashion Show and Luncheon

at the Hendersonville Country Club, "Fashions with

Orchids". Teri Nadler-Thorz and her committee have

been working hard to bring us a recharged afternoon

with elegance, fashions from Chico's, and filled with

lots of surprises. We hope you have all made your res-

ervations to attend this annual event.

Sisterhood is thrilled to be able to offer the congrega-

tion a creative Shabbat Service with special readings

and the Installation of the New Sisterhood officers

for 2016-2018 on Friday night, August 12, 7:30pm.

This will be followed by a special Oneg Shabbat in

their honor, sponsored by the past Sisterhood presi-

dents.

Thank you to all of the Balabusta Bakers, led by

Carol Leaman, who have been very busy at work for

This past July Brotherhood donated $300 towards

Mitzvah Day and our members volunteered for a

number of worthwhile projects, such as Habitat for

Humanity to assemble kitchen and bathroom cabi-

nets, Humane Society to walk and care for their ani-

mals, and People Being Jesus to feed the hungry, plus

a number of other events.

Mountain Jewish Festival is approaching quickly

and we are delighted to, once again, offer our many

services to help make this event as successful or even

more so than last year. Our Brotherhood volunteers

will be on hand to help set up the social hall, help to

install the outdoor tent and organize the tables and

seating, serve food, provide security and help direct

traffic, etc..

Our next function is being planned for Labor Day,

at which time Brotherhood will host our annual fund-

raising BBQ to help raise money for Agudas Israel.

As can be seen, we are already feeling energized,

and are off to a running start this year.

I look forward to working together with our Brother-

hood, and wish to thank all of our members for their

continued dedication and support of upcoming Broth-

erhood as well as Agudas Israel events and functions.

months, preparing for the Mountain Jewish Festival

on Sunday, August 21. The Sisterhood membership dues and brochure

were sent to you, along with a second invoice (if you

inadvertently missed sending in your dues). We ap-

preciate all of those who support Sisterhood. We

would like everyone to be involved, but understand if

you are unable or not willing... however, your contri-

bution of the annual $30 dues helps us accomplish all

that we do for Agudas Israel, including supporting

the big projects like Mitzvah Day, the Mountain Jew-

ish Festival and more.

We had a very successful Holland Bulb project

this year...watch for those gorgeous bulbs to be

blooming next spring. If you missed the opportunity,

you will have another chance next year!

something fun, enjoyable, and uplifting planned for

us.

Shalom, We are now into our 9th year of the

Agudas Angels. Thanks to so many of you, this project has been very

successful. It is wonderful that our congregational family is so generous.

Since your Angels contribution is in addition to your dues, we would like to recognize you in our Chai Lites during this

One of the most anticipated yearly events of Agudas Israel is our Sisterhood Fashion Show. It will be held again at the elegant Hendersonville Country Club, the perfect venue for this newly glamorous affair. Here is a hint of some exciting changes we can look for-ward to: 1. We are thrilled that Chico's will be our official provider. 2. We have chosen 10 Sisterhood members to model who

have never had the opportunity to do so before. 3. Each model will have three wardrobe changes, previewing

30 of Chico’s 2016 Fall Fashions the day they hit the stores!

4. Some very handsome men in tuxedos; will be escorting the models.

5. When you arrive, and during the break-outs…there will be showcase tables featuring Mary Kay make-up, Jewelry, Orchids, …oops.

(We want to surprise you with the rest!) 6. And … Rabbi Jackson will be one of our models! Please let me know if you are interested in being an under-study model. We are also looking for artistic and creative members who would like to help with decorations, center-pieces, etc. (this is so much fun!) Reservation information will follow. Pass the word to your friends and family, as we are expecting an unprecedented turnout! PREPARE TO BE DAZZLED! Dr. Teri Nadler-Thorz

Tisha B’av is not a day when we celebrate, but it

is a day to be remembered and we will do just that

on Saturday, August 13th. Coming several weeks

before the High Holy Days, it nudges us to begin to

get ready for Rosh Hashanah and the promise of

inscription in the Book of Life and our own quest

for teshuvah.

Tisha B’av commemorates the destruction of the

first and second Temples, as well as other calami-

ties in our Jewish history. Our evening at the syna-

gogue will include a brief study about the day it-

self. This will be followed by the always lovely

Havdallah service and a special Tisha B’av service

with selections from the Book of Lamentations.

Shabbat Friday Evening Services

Please engage with us for any or all services at 7:30pm:

Aug 5: Regular service

Aug 12: Sisterhood board installation

Aug 19: Outdoor service with Penny White

Aug 26: Regular service

A Special Program for Tisha B’av

One of our tasks for the future is to find a resting

place for old prayer books we no longer use. Several

years ago, we were fortunate enough to be able to

purchase new Shabbat prayer books, but we still

have the old ones as well. On Tisha B’av evening

we will open our own repository on the premises

which is called a Genizah and symbolically place

one of our old prayer books inside. Eventually we

will dispose of all of the books in the same way.

Make plans to attend on August 13th from 7-8:30.

The evening promises to be a special one with an

opportunity to learn and participate for all of us.
