AIESEC
EXCHANGE
BOOKLET
Who is AIESEC
AIESEC is the largest youth run organisation in the
world that deals in two main products leadership
and exchange. Started in 1948, its three founders
envisioned an organisation that could bridge the
world’s growing problems and develop leaders at
a time when war had torn the world apart. With
over 24,000+ leadership opportunities and 30000
exchanges done by this year alone AIESEC has
gone a long way in achieving its purpose. Cur-
rently, we are pursuing generation 2015; which
has three goals; become a first choice partner,
have a global youth voice and positive impact
What is exchange
Simply put it’s the greatest experience you will ev-
er have. This is because it’s a once in a life time
opportunity to experience the world in a different
perspective. Currently, there are over 123 coun-
tries you can go to with over 30000 different pro-
ject opportunities to choose from. It’s an oppor-
tunity that would challenge you, take you to your
breaking point, yet build you up and eventually
ensure you achieve your maximum potential.
WHY AIESEC DOES EXCHANGE
AIESEC prides itself on social impact. Over the
years we have changed the world in numerous
ways. We do this by giving people the opportuni-
ty to explore the world of its cultures and practis-
es. For if you see the world you can begin to un-
derstand it, and when you understand it, then
you can change it.
OUR PROJECTS
WORLD IMPACT
THE EXCHNAGE PROCEDURE
RECRUITMENT
The first stage of exchange is obviously recruit-
ment. If you are reading this you probably have
been recruited in one way or another. Congratu-
lations you are at the start of a journey that many
have gone through and been built by. I will kindly
urge you to share this booklet with anybody who
you think would benefit from this life changing ex-
perience.
REVIEWS
Info-session
You DON’T have to be an AIESECer TO GO FOR EX-
CHANGE. You can go to any country, at any time
and for any project (we are cool like that). Thus, it
is important for us to have an introductory session
to explain exchange and AIESEC in general to
you. This is usually an hour long meeting that is very
interactive. You will get to meet former exchange
participants, fellow recruits and the exchange
team. The convergence of all three is simply elec-
trifying as you will soon see.
While on exchange you become an ambassador
of AIESEC Local Chapter of University of Nairobi.
Even more important, you represent Kenya as a
nation. We thus take pride in understanding your
character and ensuring you have the relevant skills
and mind set to fully benefit from the exchange
process. You should note that our main goal as a
team is to develop the individual, as such no one
can fail a review. It is simply a chance to high-
light key areas that a participant would have to
develop further before they can be a true am-
bassador of AIESEC UoN.
Opportunity portal
As previously mentioned there are countless op-
portunities available for you to enjoy. Our team is
dedicated to finding you the exact one that opti-
mises your growth. It is as simple as registering for
an GIS account and filling in a form outlining your
skills and goals. From there the online system
would filter through all the opportunities available
and offer you the best alternatives. We are there
at any point in time to assist you with any queries
you have. Feel free to contact us.
Legalities
So you now know what exchange is, reviews are
done and you have a destination. So lets make
things more official. You will need to sign legal
documents committing you to the exchange
process and outlining several emergency pre-
cautions (your safety is paramount to us). You
shall also communicate with the hosting LC to
ensure that everything is set for your arrival. You
would need to pay an exchange fee of KSH
7,500 to facilitate the matching and legal costs.
At this point you are set to go for exchange.
Outgoing seminar
We can’t let you leave Kenya without a proper
send off and preparation. Thus, before you
leave, we shall take you through a short ex-
change curriculum to create an expectation set-
ting for while you are on exchange and to ensure
you are fully prepared for the exchange experi-
ence. We shall then give you a farewell party.
Realisation
While you are on exchange we shall be in con-
stant communication to ensure your wellbeing.
Expect to receive emails , just to check up on
you and alert you of local trends.
Nevertheless, the hosting LC will be very accom-
modative. Although different countries have dif-
ferent ways of doing things, it is standard to have
someone pick you up from the airport and take
you to the house where you shall be accommo-
dated. There you shall meet interns from different
nationalities who will very quickly become part of
your family. By the third day or so you should
have recovered from your jetlag. Thus, it is stand-
ard to be taken to your first day at work in your
project. From then on you will get integrated into
their systems. That’s the true joy of exchange.
Reintegration
We shall be eagerly waiting for your arrival. After
a few days of rest we would appreciate if you
could contact us for reintegration. During this ses-
sion you shall debrief us of your exchange experi-
ence and give any comments or improvements
to our systems (we love your feedback). It is a
grand opportunity to gauge the difference be-
tween the person we recruited and the final ex-
change product. It’s the pride of our team to
have impacted the life of anyone, even if it is in
a small insignificant way.
We do the work, so that
you
RELAX
Facilitating exchange
While you will have your first exchange experi-
ence behind you we will still give you a chance
to continue a journey. If you are willing we will al-
ways invite you to information sessions to talk to
new recruits about the journey that lies ahead.
We shall appreciate you posting your experience
on our blog. Furthermore, we would be hon-
oured to have your testimonial and possibly a
video about exchange.
Counting the cost
Kindly, note that your travel and accommoda-
tion costs will not be catered for by AIESEC. How-
ever, we have gone the extra mile to make stra-
tegic partnerships to lower the cost of exchange.
All the pricing is usually at student friendly prices.
Unfortunately, there is such a great disparity be-
tween different countries that it is impossible to
outline generalised costs here. However, once
you have a set destination we shall dully inform
you of what your propose budget should be.
We are ready to work with you no matter the sit-
uation, all we ask is that you don’t give up on us
and we shall not give up on you.
