Technical Subcommittee Reports Aerodynamic Design – Siva Nadarajah

Aerodynamic Phenomena – Hui Hu

A new subcommittee chair was decided at this conference.

Vehicle Aerodynamics – Jim Guglielmo and Jim DeSpirito There is a special working group by Bob Tramel and Stephen McParlin. The subcommittee plans to have a special session in Hawaii about Ground Test. A suggestion was made to have an engineering predictive methods special session in Orlando 2012.

High Lift Workshop – Bob Stuever See powerpoint presentation for complete slides presented.

New Business Group Picture was taken and is attached. The new treasurer will be Martiqua Post. Rob Vermeland reminded members that our 2011 APA meeting is Monday afternoon/evening instead of Sunday afternoon/evening to coincide with 2011 ASM meeting. The dates are Tues, January 4 – Friday, January 7, 2011 and were shifted my one day to accommodate the New Year’s holiday.

Adjournment

A motion was made by Joao Azevedo, seconded by Kenrick Waithe, and unanimously passed to adjourn the meeting at 8:45pm.

New Conference Administration System (CAS)

• The new CAS is called ScholarOne• Thoughts so far

Improvement over the old system, but still could use p ysome improvements (at least for organizers).Very easy to access abstracts submitted to other TCs and view their sessions etcand view their sessions, etc.

– In my experience with old system (AFM 2006), could not access other TC information to help plan conference.

TC conference organizers working together– To transfer abstracts uploaded to inappropriate topic areas

(primarily from reviewer comment—let us know early).(p y y)– Will attempt to reduce similar topic area conflicts in the program.

Would like reviewer’s feed back on new CAS.

Thanks for your support in reviewingfor your support in reviewing abstracts and chairing sessions!

CFD High Lift Prediction Workshop

Objectives

• Assess the numerical prediction capability (meshing, numerics, turbulence modeling, high-performance computing requirements, etc.) of current-generation CFD technology/codes for swept, medium/high-aspect ratio wings in landing/take-off (high-lift) configurations

• Develop practical modeling guidelines for CFD prediction of high-lift flowfields

• Advance the understanding of high-lift flow physics toenable development of more accurate prediction methods and tools

• Enhance CFD prediction capability to enable practical high-lift aerodynamic design and optimization

AIAA HiLiftPW-1 — Chicago, IL June 2010 Slide 5 of 16

CFD High Lift Prediction Workshop

Background

• 1998-1999 – First series of Trap Wing experiments in NASA LaRC14x22 WT and NASA ARC 12 Foot PWT

• 2002-2003 – Additional Trap Wing data collected in 14x22 WT• 2004-2006 – Preliminary discussion of a CFD High-Lift prediction

workshop based on Trap Wing datasets– External support (e.g. Boeing, etc.) grows during this timeframe– Initial thought is to have workshop organized and administered by

NASA• 2006-2007 – Idea of having the workshop organized through AIAA

(specifically APA) gains traction, and high-level discussions are held within the APA Vehicle Aerodynamics technical subcommittee

• Late 2008 – Support for workshop through AIAA is obtained from NASA and key external organizations

• Orlando 2009 – Official kick-off of workshop and formation of organizing committee

• Chicago 2010 – HiLiftPW-1

AIAA HiLiftPW-1 — Chicago, IL June 2010 Slide 6 of 16

CFD High Lift Prediction Workshop

Test Cases

• Test Case 1 – Grid Convergence Study– Trap Wing “Config 1” (Slat 30, Flap 25)– Mach = 0.2, = 13°, 28°– Re = 4.3M (based on MAC)– Tinf = 520°R– Coarse, Medium, Fine, Extra-Fine grids

• Test Case 2 – Alpha Sweep, Flap Increments– Trap Wing “Config 1” (Slat 30, Flap 25)– Trap Wing “Config 8” (Slat 30, Flap 20)– Mach = 0.2, = 6°, 13°, 21°, 28°, 32°, 34°, 37°– Medium Grid

• Test Case 3 – Slat/Flap Support Effects – Trap Wing “Config 1” (Slat 30, Flap 25)– Mach = 0.2, = 13°, 28°– Medium Grid
