AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human ImmunodeficiencyVirus.
H ² Human ² T his particular virus can only infect human beings.I ² Immunodeficiency ² HIV weakens your immune system by destroying
important cells that fight disease and infection. A "deficient" immune systemcan't protect you.V ² Virus
If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection.It will make ´antibodies,µ special molecules to fight HIV. T heseantibodies can be found in your blood.

HOW DO YOU GET AIDS?
You don·t actually ´getµ AIDS. You might get infected withHIV, and later you might develop AIDS. You can get infectedwith HIV from anyone who·s infected, even if they don·t looksick. Most people get the HIV virus by:
�having sex with an infected person
� sharing a needle (shooting drugs) with someone who·sinfected� being born when their mother is infected, or drinkingthe breast milk of an infected woman� getting a transfusion of infected blood used to be away people got AIDS, but now the blood supply isscreened very carefully and the risk is extremely low.
T here are no documented cases of HIV being transmitted bytears or saliva, but it is possible to be infected with HIV
through oral sex.

IS THERE A CURE FOR AIDS?
There is no cure for AIDS. T here are drugs that can slow down theHIV virus, and slow down the damage to your immune system. T here isno way to ´clearµ the HIV out of your body.
Other drugs can prevent or treat opportunistic infections (OIs). Inmost cases, these drugs work very well. T he newer, stronger ARVs have
also helped reduce the rates of most OIs. A few OIs, however, are stillvery difficult to treat.

To be safe, assume that your sex partnersare infected with HIV. You can·t tell if peopleare infected by how they look. T hey could belying if they tell you they are not infected,especially if they want to have sex with you.Some people got HIV from their partners whowere unfaithful ´just onceµ.
Use a barrier to prevent contact with blood or
sexual fluid. T he most common artificial barrieris a condom for men. You can also use a femalecondom to protect the vagina or rectum duringintercourse.
