INSPIRE

ENGAGE

ACT

Top business and thought leaders from around the world are invited to share their knowledge with the delegates about the chosen forum theme. This section of the day is delivered through short and powerful talks and aims to inspire delegates and help to form their opinions for the rest of the day.

Our partner organizations engage with the youth delegates to give new perspectives on issues relating to the forum theme through workshops, conversations and idea generation spaces. Youth and business are able to interact, exchange opinions and understand what is being done in the world to address the question of the day.

The youth delegates take their learnings and insights from the day into a space where they are able to generate ideas, ask challenging questions and give their opinions on the actions that should be taken towards the theme of the day.

The Africa We Want is safe, stable, prosperous and sustainable – based on empathy and respect. It is open, sharing and features equal rights and

opportunities. The Africa We Want acknowledges the power of the individual and the force in joint struggles. The Africa We Want recognizes local action for

continental impact. The Africa We Want supports innovation and creativity yet builds on existing knowledge and documented methods.

We all have important roles to play. Major institutions from governments, business, academia and media increasingly take proactive measures to become change

makers. In this session, we will discuss how totally different institutions: from corporates, state-parastatals, civil societies, industry leaders and Embassies take a

leading role as change makers. Forum partners share with the delegation initiatives they have undertaken to bring

about change within their environments.

OUR HISTORYEquity Bank Limited (The “Bank”) is incorporated, registered under the Kenyan Companies Act Cap 486 and domiciled in Kenya. The address of the Bank’s registered office is 9th Floor, Equity Centre, P.O. Box 75104 – 00200 Nairobi. The Bank is licensed under the Kenya Banking Act (Chapter 488), and continues to offer retail banking, microfinance and related services. The Bank has subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Tanzania. Its shares are listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and Uganda Securities Exchange.

Equity Bank was founded as Equity Building Society (EBS) in October 1984 and was originally a provider of mortgage financing for the majority of customers who fell into the low income population. The society’s logo, a modest house with a brown roof, resonates with its target market and their determination to make small but steady gains toward a better life, seeking security and advancement of their dreams. The vast majority of Africans have historically been excluded from access to financial resources.

Having been declared technically insolvent in 1993, Equity’s transformation into a rapidly growing microfinance and then a commercial bank is widely considered to be an inspirational success story. Currenlty, Equity Bank has more than 8 million customers making it the largest bank in terms of customer base in Africa and having nearly half of bank accounts in Kenya. The company’s vision is “to be the champion of the socio-economic prosperity of the people of Africa”.

Equity Bank retains a passionate commitment to empowering its clients to transform their lives and livelihoods. Through a business model that is anchored on access, convenience and flexibility, the Bank has evolved to become an all inclusive financial services provider with a growing pan African footprint.

Equity Bank’s business model and its visionary leadership has continued to earn local, regional and global accolades and recognitions. The model is also studied in some of the leading business schools in the world, as other developing countries in Africa and Asia seek to learn from Equity’s low margin, high-volume model.

Equity Bank in 2010 established the Equity Group Foundation. This innovation and creative vehicle has fully transformed the concept of philanthropy and corporate social responsibility. While Equity Group Foundation champions the socio-economic transformation of the people of Africa and seeks partnerships along six cluster thematic areas, Equity Bank provides the infrastructure of delivery hence reducing the operational costs for the Foundation and increasing the rate of return on any social investment. The six social thematic areas

of focus are: education and leadership development; financial literacy and access; entrepreneurship, agriculture, health, innovations and environment. Some of the recent accolades and recognitions that Equity Bank Limited has received include:o November 2013: Equity Bank Group Chairman Peter Munga was named Chairman of the Year during the 4th edition of the annual Capital Markets Awards. o November 2013: Equity Bank was recognized amongst Kenya’s Top Tax Payers 2013 by KRA.o October 2013: Dr. James Mwangi was awarded the African Business Leader of the Year by Africa Investor.o April 2013: Equity Bank was voted Best Bank in Kenya at the Think Business Banking Awards 2013. o April 2013: Equity Bank was named Best Bank in Kenya Tier 1 with a sturdy asset base of over Ksh 252 billion.o April 2013: Equity Bank’s focus on affordability and inclusivity was recognized with the Bank with Lowest Charges award at the Banking Awards 2013.o April 2013: Equity Bank was voted the best bank in Kenya o June, 2012: Equity Bank CEO and Managing Director Dr. James Mwangi was named 2012 Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year o June 2012: Equity Bank was awarded Best Managed Company in Africa award by EuroMoney magazine. o June 2012: Equity Bank was awarded the Most Innovative Bank in Africa Award at the African Bankers Awards.o May 2012: Equity Bank was named Best Bank in Kenya o September 2011: Equity Bank Group was listed as one of the 16 global emerging Markets New Sustainability Champions by a World Economic Forum Report in 2011. o Sept 2011: Africa Investor named Equity CEO Dr. James Mwangi as the African Banker of the year for the second year in a row.o Sept 2011: Africa Investor named Equity Bank as the Best Initiative in Support of SMEs and the Millennium Development Goals.o 2010: Africa investor named Equity Bank as the Ai 40 Company of the Year.o 2010: The Financial Times named Equity CEO Dr. James Mwangi among the 50 emerging market business leaders in BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - and other emerging market economies - who have shaped the economic performance of their respective regions. o In June 2009 Emerging Markets Most Sustainable Bank of the Year in Africa and the Middle East.o Equity Bank is the holder of the 2007 Global Vision Award in Microfinance "For initiating a concept of the future that will shape the Global Economy".
