2 I EY Alternative Investment Funds Club - 2019/2020 Program

Dear Club Member,

The Partners of EY Luxembourg are proud to present the 2019-2020 program for the AIF Club.

Since its inception nine years ago, the AIF Club, under the thoughtful and energetic leadership of Michael Hornsby has delivered over 150 events and welcomed over 8,000 members. Mike has established the AIF Club as one of the leading forums in the Luxembourg Alternatives industry through which points of view are generated and market participants have the opportunity to connect and network. On behalf of our Firm and the Industry, we thank him for his exceptional contribution to this Club.

From a personal perspective, it is with great pleasure that I take over the role of AIF Club Chairman for the coming season and it is my sincere intention to build on the vibrant platform that has been established.

The 2019-2020 season program has 20 scheduled events and at least three webcasts which are intended to provide insights on developments in the alternative investment funds industry and offer a quality platform through which industry participants can meet, network and exchange views. The coming season will see a larger number of roundtable sessions on current topics including debt funds, governance of AIFMs post-Brexit and open end real estate funds coupled with a newly established series of roundtable sessions such as our new Tax Directors roundtable series and Chief Accounting Officers roundtable series.

The Luxembourg alternative investment funds industry is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth and change. Contributing factors include the impact of Brexit, evolution in substance requirements, the European regulatory agenda and transformation in the fiscal environment. This wave of change is being greeted at a time when the industry is enjoying significant growth in capital inflow, with some asset classes experiencing record levels of undeployed capital commitments. It is very fair to say that the industry is active and there are healthy rewards on offer to those managers who can succeed in effectively navigating the challenges ahead.

Allocation of capital from institutional investors towards alternative asset classes continues to grow and investor intention surveys show no signs of this trend stopping any time soon. The weight of capital in queue has provoked many managers to actively seek innovative new targets for capital deployment. It has also seen historical niche areas attract significantly more attention. Within real estate, the entire “living” space is a prime example of one of these innovative new areas including student housing, private rented sector, hotels and aged care homes. Equally, logistics products are featuring regularly with themes focused on exploiting disruptions in the retail and supply chain management processes of many businesses. Debt funds are becoming a far more popular product as the theme of alternative credit continues and European markets become more accustomed to alternative credit sources. Infrastructure is dominating many of the headlines as institutional investors seeks to gain exposure to the benefits of transforming economies and diversify the income producing investments in their portfolio.

The vast majority of capital raised is being attracted by the major names in the industry. Whilst there continues to be a place for niche players – and arguably always will be due to the nature of our industry, mid-sized managers are coming under increased pressure causing them to reflect on their operating models and strategic choices. Consolidation remains a key trend and it is expected that the coming year will see several more mergers of investment managers, allowing them to exploit economies of scale and diversity of product range.

Going hand in hand with these big changes in the alternative investment management industry is the transformation being seen in the asset servicing industry. Administrators and other service providers have made massive investment in their operating models and technologies allowing them to effectively service the breadth and depth of investment products being raised. Outsourcing remains firmly on the agenda of most major managers and the evolution of the asset servicing industry provides greater scope for this to be an effective solution on a global and holistic basis. In many instances, the alternative investment funds industry remains quite primitive from a technological perspective. However, innovative new solutions in the areas of IT applications, robotics and process automation have provided unique opportunities for managers to respond to continued pressures on fees and margins. The value of data is high on everyone’s agenda and the ability to analyze and utilize this data to facilitate higher quality investment and risk management decisions is a key focus.

We see a far greater focus being placed by managers on the development and maintenance of due diligence assets to allow them to showcase their Firms abilities and track records to prospective investors. Establishing and maintaining a comprehensive suite of due diligence assets to ensure perspective investors can be onboarded in a swift and seamless manner is becoming a key differentiating factor for managers.

Our hope for the coming season of our EY AIF Club is that we can successfully bring to you, our members, a strong and balanced perspective on these and many other key topics in the industry through our series of events. We also hope that our sessions continue to be interactive, thought provoking and provide a quality forum to connect with your peers and for industry views and best practices to be cultivated and perpetuated.

The AIF Club… has been created to

• Provide insight into developments in the alternative sectors of the financial industry, including private equity, real estate, hedge, debt, infrastructure and other alternative fund segments

• Provide knowledge and trainings for industry practitioners to better serve and understand the industry

• Provide alternative industry practitioners with a platform to meet, exchange views and network

… will offer you Industry summits

The AIF Club organizes highly interactive alternative asset-related events to which not only international EY specialists participate but also key leaders from other organizations, who often contribute to lively debates while providing reflection or insights on leading topics. The aim of these sector specific summits is to provide members with a broad platform of factors shaping the respective industries.

Keynote speeches

External speakers will be invited to provide insight on current hot topics in our keynote speeches. Speakers may be EY subject matter specialists from our alternatives network or external speakers from leading players in the industry.

Open workshops

Open workshops cover topics which have a broad range of interest and are open to all members. The content of this program reflects general ongoing developments and hot topics impacting alternative investment fund products in general and in middle and back office environments.

Trainings

For the sixth consecutive year, we will hold in October 2019 our three-day valuation training designed for financial professionals that seek to develop a more in-depth knowledge of alternative asset valuation which includes private equity, real estate and infrastructure. Over the years, we are striving to continuously improve and integrate new issues of interest into the training program. This valuation training has become a good indicator for valuation market practices over the years, as we note the positive evolution of market valuation practices thanks to the interaction with the participants. The focus of our training program will be to support participants to further develop technical oversight skills to appropriately assess the work of specialists whether internal or external to an organization.

In addition, as every year, we will continue to hold the trainings to help fund accountants and controllers to get to grips with the latest developments in financial and investor reporting across alternative asset classes.

Targeted roundtables

This event format has proved very successful. This year we will run seven roundtables. Roundtables provide the opportunity for a small group of specialists to discuss specific topics of common interest and therefore invitations to these events are restricted. The organizer of the respective roundtable will identify the target audience, bringing together leading specialists to discuss and work on solutions for various specific challenges that market participants are currently facing. To ensure effective discussions, we will limit the number of participants in these events to 20 – 25 specialists which proved to be quite efficient in the past. Should you be interested in joining one of the upcoming roundtables, please send an email to [email protected] explaining briefly your role within the company you are working for and Mireille will get back to you with further information.

The outcome of the roundtable discussions are summarized in a paper and shared with all AIF Club members in due time. Please refer to our section on our AIF Club website called Thought Leadership to get a copy of these publications.

Videos

We continue to produce videos within the framework of our AIF Club to also enable our clients and business partners located outside Luxembourg to benefit in a broader way from our Club program. The videos will demonstrate market updates and provide you with our global sector/service line leaders’ view on specific topics. We invite you to visit our AIF Club website/Video archive for further reference.

Webcasts

This year we will also offer to our members webcasts on depositaries, open-end real estate funds and GDPR. Furthermore, we will also run ad-hoc webcasts on tax matters in response to market developments to ensure our members get strong points of view on a real-time basis.

Personal meetings with our subject matter specialists

The EY Luxembourg AIF Club offers you the opportunity to arrange meetings with our subject matter specialists following the trainings, workshops and breakfast briefings or at another occasion.

Networking and social events

Through the AIF Club, EY Luxembourg makes it possible for professionals in the industry to meet and share insights in a more relaxed environment. Many of EY Luxembourg’s events are followed by drinks or coffee giving you the opportunity to network with fellow attendees. The AIF Club also organizes more specific social events to enhance networking in a more informal environment.

LinkedIn network

We ask all AIF Club members to join us on LinkedIn where they can find the latest information, watch our videos and interact with the EY Luxembourg alternatives team and other members.

Open-end real estate funds

6 February 2020

Depositary – latest industry developments

23 January 2020

Audience: Managers and administrators involved in the design, launch and operations of open-end real estate funds

Open-end real estate funds continue to be one of the most popular product formats. Many of the established names in this space continue to generate significant capital inflows and we also see new entrants to this market enjoying considerable success. We will welcome a selection of open-end fund managers and administrators to discuss the challenges this product type presents in terms of design and operations. Our conversations will cover aspects such as pricing, liquidity, fee models and investor reporting.

Audience: Depositaries

This roundtable has become an annual institution where depositaries year-on-year have a platform to discuss leading practices in the Luxembourg market place as well as common issues in day-to-day activities. Previous sessions considered discussions around the nature and focus of CSSF oversight on depositary activities, the general level of alignment of practice within the industry and the extent to which such activities can, or should from a practical point of view, be conducted outside of Luxembourg. This year’s roundtable will revisit the oversight responsibilities of depositaries, include discussion around safekeeping of cash within an underlying structure as well as cash-flow monitoring, look at practical approaches to implementing regulatory compliance with regards to depositary records relating to nominal values of RE/PE and Infrastructures, and look-through analysis.
