Aim: How can the metric system help us make uniform
measurements?
Do Now: The smart board needs a new cover. What can we use to measure the smart board
with if we don’t have a tool?
Why do we measure?
• We cannot rely on observations made with only our senses. They aren’t accurate.
• Measurements help us gather information. • Exact measurements are important to
scientists.
What do we measure?
• Length• Mass• Volume
How do we measure?
Customary• Difficult to convert
between measurements.
• What we use in the US. • Examples include:
inches, feet, quart, gallon, ounces, pounds.
Metric• Easy to convert
between measurements.
• Used by scientists and most of the world.
• Examples include: meters, liters, and grams.
How do we measure?
• Scientists use the metric system to make measurements. This system is based on the idea that measurements can easily be converted because it is based on the number 10.
