I. The Election of 1860A. Lincoln won by a landslide for two reasons:

1. Population of North was greater than the

South by 4 to 1.

2. The south split their vote between 3 candidates.

A. Southerners now felt they had no voice in national government.

B. 1861, South Carolina and 6 other states secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America

C. Jefferson Davis is elected President of the Confederacy

D. Confederacy started seizing Federal forts.

E. April 11, 1861- Confederate troops fire upon

Fort Sumter.
