Gov't funds dental care for low-income families April 9, 2015 08:21 AM from the Prince George Citizen

The province is providing a one-time, $120,000 grant to support access to urgent dental care for low-income families. There are 20 not-for-profit dental clinics, including Prince George's Emergency Dental Outreach Clinic, that will get $4,000 each. The majority of the $80,000 allotted to the clinics will be used to lower rates for those in need.

The remaining $40,000 goes to the BC Dental Association's Save a Smile program, supporting urgent dental care to children of families without dental-plan coverage. Last year government provided dental services to about 137,000 people on income and disability assistance for a total cost of $58 million.

For information on the dental program for persons with disabilities and persons with persistent multiple barriers visit www.mhr.gov.bc.ca/factsheets/2005/dental.htm.

Home Sharing - AiMHi - One Community - One Vision

OPEN YOUR HEART, OPEN YOUR HOME

Adults with Developmental Disabilities face a variety of challenges. One of these challenges is finding adequate housing. For 57 years, AiMHi has helped people with these needs by

providing housing options and supports for daily living assistance. Currently, we are further developing these services through our Home Sharing Program. This program connects a

person like yourself with someone who is looking for a supportive place to live and to call home.

Going into our 4th year of successful Home Sharing, we are in search of more places for people

to call home. We want to connect people with developmental disabilities to a place where they can call home. A place where they can have the freedom to live a more independent life, a place where they have people who care about them to provide them with the support needed to be a

member of their community and have a sense of belonging. We are looking for people who can provide the stability that comes from being part of a home and family, just as we have for the past 57 years.

If you or someone you know have room in your hearts,

an extra room in your home, and are interested in giving

a person that sense of family, connection and belonging, then we want to speak with you. We understand that

families and homes come in all different shapes and sizes and we are interested in speaking with anyone who would like to learn more about this rewarding

opportunity. We’ll be happy to give you more information, or simply answer some of your questions on becoming one of our Independent Home Share Providers.

Please call Home Sharing Coordinator @ 250-564-6408 ext. 251 or email [email protected].

Registered Disability Savings Plan

What is an RDSP?

A Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is a registered product created by

the Government of Canada. This plan is designed to help disabled Canadians

and their families form good long-term savings habits – RDSP participants may

be eligible for grants and bonds from the government assistance program.

If you are a Canadian citizen with a social insurance number, under age 60 and

are eligible to receive the Disability Tax Credit, then you should consider opening a RDSP.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A RDSP? There are many different disabilities that are eligible for the RDSP. If you are receiving the Disability Tax Credit,

under age 60 and a Canadian with a valid SIN, you may be eligible for your RDSP.

With the registered disability long term savings plan, you may contribute on an annual basis any amount – with a lifetime

maximum limit of $200,000.

View the Government T2201 form to see if you qualify for the Disability Tax Credit, which in turn will reveal if you also

qualify for an RDSP.

Speak with a Financial Planning Representative for more information about your RDSP’s.

Expect Little...Dream BIG

Recently, a Facebook group for "Special Needs Families of Northern BC" was formed by Julie MacMillan.

This group was created over a year ago as many parents of special needs children mentioned there was nowhere for Northern BC parents to collaborate our ideas, joys, concerns and experience. The group is specifically for parents or primary guardians of special needs children who live north of Williams Lake and within BC. In addition, as long as the parent feels their child has special needs, they are welcome to join the group. It is kept as a closed group to provide a safe haven for members to speak freely and all members are asked to keep what they have read on the Facebook page confidential unless permission has been given to do otherwise. It’s a great place to make new friends across Northern BC who have an understanding of what others are going through in similar situations. In addition, now with nearly 150 members it provides a great resource, sounding board and place to share ideas, concerns, and triumphs. If you are interested and would like more information contact Julie at [email protected].

(This is not an endorsement from AiMHi, but thought that some

families may be interested.)

The of AiMHi is You!

Since 1957 AiMHi has strived to offer the best supports and services to infants, children, youth and adults who

have special needs, and their families. This has been successfully accomplished, in part, due to the ongoing

support of our donors, sponsors, and the partnerships we have with individual citizens, organizations, and

businesses in our community.

This support has come in the form of donations and planned giving which directly results in making a positive

difference in the lives of others. Donations like yours make it possible for us to continue helping people.

Together we are investing in people; addressing their needs because we care…...

Just a few summer hints to keep your pet safe

and comfortable during hot, summer days.

- Exercise your dog early or late in the day

- Provide fresh water daily

- Check the temperature of the ground or sand to

make sure it is not too HOT for their paws

- Leave your dog in a shady area

- NEVER walk your dog when temperature is over

30oC (their paws burn on hot pavement and sand)

- NEVER leave your dog alone in a parked car on a

warm day, even if the window is left open)

Signs of heatstroke: muddy pink gums (not

bright pink), heavy panting with occasional

frothing at the mouth, disorientation, increased

heart rate.

What to do: remove from the heat source,

increase ventilation and apply cool water or

towel compresses. DO NOT apply ice. Reapply

cool towels frequently. Offer water, but don’t

force it. Get your pet to the vet quickly.
