Shepherding and corporate parenting

We nourish individuals to make good choices for themselves.

Students who can recognise a good thing when they see it & act upon it , can contribute to building exceptional communities both in school and in the future.

Literacy Learning Point Plus : The word "pastor" derives from the Latin noun pastor which means "shepherd" and relates to the Latin verb pascere – "to lead to pasture, set to grazing, cause to eat".

Presentation Notes
Start with positives – who has had a good day and why? Celebrate the most positives every day and the most positives every week (at Christmas, some tutors use this as an opportunity to share an Advent calendar) No negatives? –dance to Kool & The Gang Being interested in their days creates relationship which then helps you to keep them on board and communicates that you care for them. You can then use their successes to encourage them in their weaknesses Who has made a positive contribution to WP etiquette today and this week? These can be celebrated in assembly. What has happened in Sport/Wider Learning/Music? Share wins and losses. Who has helped another member of the year group/tutor group? Reflection and Continuous Improvement Thinking through the following questions will help tutors to identify ways to support their group further: How many of my tutees have negatives? Is it over 4? (4 is a critical benchmark for each year group) Am I taking them to detention or do I need to do it in my tutor base? Is there a pattern to the negatives we are receiving? Repeat offenders – what support can I offer them? Is this a change in behaviour? Why? Repeated reasons – is there a pattern in the type of negatives received? What support can I/HOY offer? Is it a particular teacher/class/set? Is this worth flagging with a HOD or HOY to see if other support would be beneficial? Is further communication required? What are home circumstances like? Would a head’s up avoid bigger future problems? What creative solutions might work? Examples might include individual or class interventions/competitions; HOY or dept interventions; tailored support cards or mentoring; CSC or equipment help. Routines create expectations – we know that as students move up the school, they receive fewer detentions,

If your name came up for detention today, firstly take time to reflect on what went wrong.

Your tutor will asked you what happened. You should know

exactly what went wrong.

Accept responsibility and begin to think about how you can

make sure this doesn’t happen again? (Be practical!)

Collective Responsibility Corner

Listen carefully to what went wrong in your classmates’ days.

Have you ever been in a similar situation? What happened and what did you learn?

What can you do to help your classmate do better next time?

What do we need to work on as a tutor group? What can we do practically to improve?
