2 SEPTEMBER 2016

Dear Member,

A very important focus across all of our platforms is education. Ensuring that the very youngest members of our community are ready for school; that kids are exposed to the arts, literature, science, history, the great outdoors, and more; that kids across the city and suburbs are encouraged to graduate from high school and beyond – these values are all core to our mission. This month as students head back to school, WTTW brings you a week-long primetime and digital initiative, Spotlight Education Week,

which features specials from Frontline, NOVA, POV, Independent Lens, TED Talks, PBS NewsHour, and more, culminating in the annual American Graduate Day celebration recognizing individuals and organizations that are helping children achieve their goals. These specials will be available on WTTW11 and wttw.com. Visit WTTW’s American Graduate website, and watch our 9-part digital series, Central Standard: On Education, for a revealing look at the challenges facing families in Chicago’s education system through the eyes of five 8th grade students.

September is always a month of blockbuster premieres on WTTW11. We’ll bring all-new seasons of the popular Poldark and Indian Summers series from Masterpiece. PBS NewsHour provides coverage and analysis of the first Presidential Debate; Frontline’s acclaimed election-year series

The Choice returns – going behind the headlines to investigate what has shaped the Democrat and Republican candidates; and Chicago Tonight will go deep with coverage of local elections. A new special focuses on an elderly Winston Churchill during his second stint as England’s Prime Minister. We mark the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a new glimpse inside the Pentagon on that fateful day, and an episode of NOVA will focus on the evolution of terrorism since then.

On 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com, we’ll have four concerts from the 2016 BBC Promenade season, the world’s largest classical music festival from London’s Royal Albert Hall, including the famous Last Night of the Proms to conclude this miniseries with a bang. We anticipate the upcoming Lyric Opera season with a live broadcast of Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park. And we welcome a number of virtuoso artists to our studios for live Impromptu performances, starting with guitarist Jason Vieaux and harpist Yolanda Kondonassis, plus the Fifth House Ensemble, the Cavatina Duo, and more. Visit wfmt.com for extra coverage of these events, including interviews, feature stories, and classical news of the day.

Join us as we make the transition from summer to fall!

Sincerely,

Dan SchmidtPresident & CEO

Screening & Discussion – Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ WarWTTW presents a screening and discussion about a new film directed by

Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War.This new film is an account of a daring rescue mission that occurred on

the precipice of World War II. It tells the previously untold story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, an American minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe. Over two dangerous years, they helped to save scores of imperiled Jews and refugees fleeing Nazi occupation across Europe.

A book signing with filmmaker Artemis Joukowsky will precede the screening, and a panel discussion with questions and comments from the audience will follow. The discussion will be moderated by WTTW senior producer Dan Andries with panelists Peter Braunfeld, Holocaust survivor; Dr. Mark Hicks, Professor of Religious Education at Meadville Lombard Theological School; Artemis Joukowsky, filmmaker; and Maureen Loughnane, Director, Chicago Office, Facing History and Ourselves.

This special event is free, but reservations are required. Visit to wttw.com/events to reserve your spot.

WFMT’s monthly live series, The PianoForte Salon Series, continues its season of broadcasts and you’re invited to be part of the audience! Join WFMT for a live performance and conversation with pianist Alessandro Marangoni performing Rossini and Chopin.

Alessandro Marangoni burst onto the international concert stage in 2007 when he won the prestigious “Amici di Milano” International Prize for the Music. In the same year, he played at Teatro alla Scala

in Milan, as pianist solo-ist during a tribute to the great Italian conductor Victor de Sabata, with Daniel Barenboim. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of de Sabata’s death, he recorded a CD of his piano works on the La Bottega Discantica label. Soon after, he was signed as an international recording artist with NAXOS. Marangoni’s growing discography has received international critical acclaim for the interpretation and technique that fueled his meteoric rise on the concert stage in Europe and beyond.

Admission to this concert is free. For program information, visit pianofortefoundation.org.

Yakov Smirnoff LIVEIn this new one-man show, Yakov Smirnoff uses humor, intelligence, and empirical research to showcase

how laughter is the gauge of happiness in romantic relationships. You’ll be left in stitches as you enjoy his insightful and humorous philosophies on love, romance, and the differences between men and wom-en. In the ’80s, his humor helped end the Cold War in the war room, and now he’s helping to end the cold war in the bedroom.

Happily Ever Laughter is a culmi-nation of a concept Yakov has been working on for the last 20 years at his own two-thousand seat theater in Branson, Missouri. It’s there that he created a laboratory of laughter and where four and a half million of his

guests have learned – through laughter – how to extend the honeymoon stage in their own relationships. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit wttw.com/events.

Opera: Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger” – James Rutherford (Hans Sachs); Brandon Jovanovich (Walther); Rachel Willis-Sorensen (Eva); Sasha Cooke (Magdalene); Alek Shrader (David); Martin

20 SEPTEMBER 2016

Wagner’s Die Meistersinger from San FranciscoThis production of Richard Wagner’s only comedy updates the action from the 16th century to the beginning of the 19th. Directed by David McVicar, the show is a co-production of the San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Britain’s Glyndebourne Festival (Glyndebourne audiences saw it in 2011, Chicago audiences in 2013). In San Francisco earlier this year, Sir Mark Elder conducted the SFO’s chorus and orchestra, and a cast headed by James Rutherford as Hans Sachs, the opera’s hero-philosopher-poet; Brandon Jovanovich as Walther von Stolzing, the nobleman who aspires to membership in Nuremberg’s guild of master singers, and also to the hand in marriage of Eva (sung by Rachel Willis-Sorensen).

BBC Proms: Shakespeare on Stage and ScreenThis year’s BBC Promenade Concerts from the Royal Albert Hall include a tribute to Shakespeare 400: Keith Lockhart conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra in British and American music inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. On the program are some of Sir William Walton’s music for Richard III and As You Like It, plus Shakespearean music by Gerald Finzi and Sir Arthur Sullivan. The American half of the program features the Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, which was based on the Bard’s Romeo and Juliet; a suite from Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, inspired by The Taming of the Shrew; and by Richard Rodgers, highlights of The Boys from Syracuse, based on The Comedy of Errors.

2016 SEPTEMBER 23

The Chicago Symphony and RespighiGuest conductor Manfred Honeck, music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony, led the CSO earlier this year in a program of music by Tchaikovsky and Respighi. One of Respighi’s best-known works, The Fountains of Rome, was paired with a much less familiar piece, his Concerto Gregoriano for violin and orchestra. This concerto reflects Respighi’s love for ancient music: he incorporated modal Gregorian-chant themes into a lyrical, soft-spoken work that projects gentle melodiousness instead of the virtuoso fireworks that characterize most concertos. Seldom played nowadays, it received its U.S. premiere in 1924 from the Chicago Symphony under Frederick Stock’s direction, with then-concertmaster Jacques Gordon as the soloist. Last winter’s performance featured the orchestra’s current concertmaster, Robert Chen, as the soloist.

A Brazilian Orchestra Visiting the PromsOffi cially known as the Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado de Sao Paulo (OSESP), the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra has been led since 2012 by Marin Alsop, who last month led the orchestra in a guest appearance at London’s BBC Promenade Concerts. The Sao Paulo Symphony was founded in Brazil’s largest city in 1954 and was led for many years by the Brazilian conductor Eleazar de Carvalho. In addition to performing concerts of standard-repertory symphonic music, the orchestra has always made a particular point of programming works by Brazilian composers. It has also recorded a wide variety of Brazilian music, including an ongoing CD cycle of the symphonies by Villa-Lobos. On OSESP’s London program: music by Villa-Lobos and Brazil’s Marlos Nobre, plus Grieg’s Piano Concerto with Gabriela Montero as the soloist, and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.

26 SEPTEMBER 2016

The Berlin Philharmonic Playing Mahler at the PromsEarlier this month, Sir Simon Rattle led the Berlin Philharmonic at the Promenade Concerts in a short work by the late Pierre Boulez, plus Mahler’s Symphony #7, often called Song of the Night. This work was completed in 1906 and premiered two years later in Prague, under the composer’s direction, at a concert honoring a jubilee for the Austrian emperor, Franz Joseph. Like several other Mahler works, it created some bewilderment at its premiere and took some time to achieve the admiration it enjoys today. Expansive opening and closing movements surround three evocations of night. Mahler compared the atmosphere of the first Nachtmusik movement to the famous Night Watch painting by Rembrandt. The symphony’s central movement is a Scherzo labeled Schattenhaft, or Shadowy. Then the second Nachtmusik, labeled Amoroso, has been compared to a serenade. The constantly shifting moods of the Symphony #7 are articulated by a very large orchestra, including extra woodwinds and brass, a fully-staffed string section, extra percussionists who play bells as well as drums, a mandolin, a guitar, and two harps.

2016 SEPTEMBER 29

The Last Night of the PromsThe closing performance of the annual BBC Promenade Concerts season is always a rousing affair involving soloists, several choirs, the BBC Symphony, and a wildly enthusiastic audience. This year’s Last Night was conducted by Sakari Oramo and featured the Peruvian-born tenor Juan Diego Florez in arias by Rossini, Donizetti, and Offenbach, plus a Latin-American medley. Other vocal soloists were featured in Vaughan Williams’ haunting Serenade to Music, whose text comes from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Other British music takes prominence for the concert’s patriotic-themed final portion: Elgar’s first Pomp and Circumstance march, the upbeat Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Arne’s Rule Britannia, and the Parry hymn Jerusalem, plus God Save the Queen and Auld Lang Syne for good measure.

30 SEPTEMBER 2016

The National Youth Orchestra at Carnegie HallCarnegie Hall commissioned a new work from Tan Dun in honor of the orchestra’s tour to China last year. The Secret of Wind and Birds features a standard Western-style symphony orchestra, plus birdcalls played on traditional Chinese instruments, then formatted into a file for cell phones. At various points in the score, the players and some audience members activate their phones to create what the composer calls a “poetic forest” of bird sounds. Also part of this concert, syndicated from the 2015-16 Carnegie Hall concert season, were Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto with Yundi Li as the soloist, and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique conducted by Charles Dutoit.
