HEAD PRESSURE CONTROL

19

The design of air conditioning and refrigeration systems utilizing an air-cooled condenser involvestwo main problems, high and low ambient tempera-tures. If the air-cooled condenser is properly sized, it will operate satisfactorily during extremely highambient temperatures. However, since most units will be required to operate at ambient temperatures below their design dry bulb temperature during most of the year, the solution to low ambient operation is more complex.

Without good head pressure control during low ambient operation, the system can experience both running cycle and off-cycle problems. Two running cycle problems are of prime concern:

1. Since the pressure differential across thethermostatic expansion valve port affectsthe rate of refrigerant flow, low head pressuregenerally causes insufficient refrigerant tobe fed to the evaporator.

2. Any system using hot gas for defrost orcompressor capacity control must have anormal head pressure to operate properly. In either case, failure to have sufficient headpressure will result in low suction pressureand/or iced evaporator coils.

The primary off-cycle problem is the possible inability to get the system on-line if the refrigerant has migrated to the condenser. The evaporator pressure may not build up to the cut-in point of thelow pressure control and the compressor will not starteven though refrigeration is required. Even if theevaporator pressure builds up to the cut-in setting, insufficient flow through the TEV will cause a low suction pressure which results in compressor cycling.

RefPlus has two methods of head pressure control to solve these system problems… one adjustable and one non-adjustable. Each method utilizes twovalves designed specifically for this type of applica-tion. A drop in the condensing pressure often occurson air-cooled systems as a result of low ambient conditions encountered during fall-winter-springoperation. The RefPlus Head Pressure Control’s purpose is to hold back enough of the condensed liquid refrigerant so that some of the condenser

surface is rendered inactive. This reduction of activecondensing surface results in a rise in condensingpressure and sufficient liquid line pressure for normal system operation.

RefPlus also offers non-flood and floating head pressure systems. For non-flood and floating headpressure systems, use the adjustable flooding valvesset at 70°F (21°C) condensing combined with ournew liquid sub-cooling fan cycling and speed control.

CASINGS: Air-cooled condensing unit bases, condenser fan section and electrical boxes areheavy-gauge galvanized steel (G90) with plated or stainless steel hardware. Model OCZ cabinets are painted galvanized steel, and OVZ models areheavy-gauge galvanized steel (G90) for corrosion-free assembly. Cabinets are provided with hingedaccess door with holder. OVZ condenser includes sideaccess panels for easy coil inspection and cleaning.

CONDENSER COILS are manufactured with seamless, deoxidized, heavy wall, and smooth copper tubes. They are mechanically expanded inself-spaced, full-collared aluminum corrugated platefins for permanent bond and maximum heat trans-fer. Connections and bends are brazed with a hightemperature-brazing alloy. Coils are provided with an integrated, true sub-cooling circuit. Coils are factory leak tested at 400 psig using -40°F/-40°Cdew point dry air. Model OVZ: All tube sheets are provided with oversized holes, and coils are supported in sliding tracks for friction-free assemblyand maximum reliability.

FAN GUARDS AND MOTOR MOUNTSare welded wire construction for full protection from moving parts. Baked-on powder epoxy coatingprovides corrosion protection.

FANS are aluminum blades riveted to a steel hub. They are statically and dynamically balanced forsmooth and vibration-free operation. Model ICZ and OCZ 011 to 015 use 16” fans and 020 to 150use 20” fans. Model OVZ uses 20” fans.

FAN MOTORS are low speed, permanently lubricated sealed ball bearings and inherent thermalprotection for long life and dependable service. Models ICZ, OCZ, OVZ are line voltage single phase.

WIRING: Fan motors are wired using flexible cord, type SOW 90°C #16 AWG and are secured with certified liquid-tight connectors (OVZ). Compressors, fan motors (ICZ/OCZ) and controls are wired usingwater and oil resistant wire, type TEW 105°C protected by plastic or metallic conduit attached with certified connectors.

ELECTRICAL BOXES are located on the front (ICZ and OCZ) or side (OVZ) of the unit for easyaccess and service. They are weather protected and are manufactured of heavy-gauge galvanizedsteel and assembled with plated or stainless steelhardware for corrosion protection.

CONTROL PANELS are complete with terminalblocks, control transformer, control circuit fuses, compressor and fan contactors (multi fan units), liquid sensing fan cycling thermostats, fix high and adjustable low pressure control, and a pump-down switch. The wires are numbered, color-codedand conveniently routed in wiring ducts. All terminalblocks are identified and match the wiring diagram.

COMPRESSORS are suction cooled, refrigerationor heat pump duty, Scroll. They are supplied withsuction and discharge valves, solid state or linebreak thermal protection, crankcase heater, mineraloil for HCFC refrigerant and Polyol Ester oil with HFC refrigerant.

RECEIVERS (6" dia. and smaller) are UL/CSA certified and are supplied with a fusible plug.Receivers (6 5/8" dia. and larger) are CRN or ASME "U" stamped and are supplied with reliefvalves. All receivers have inlet and outlet back-seated Rotalock valves. For low ambient operation, RefPlus offers a factory installed insulation and heating option.

REFRIGERATION FLOODING VALVES(model OCZ and OVZ) are factory installed. They are fixed pressures.

REFRIGERATION COPPER TUBES are ASTM certified and are factory bent using a programmableCNC tube bender. They are manufactured with theminimum number of fittings and brazed joints toreduce the risk of leaks.

FACTORY TESTED: All RefPlus units areelectrically tested. A Dielectric Voltage WithstandStrength Test is done on all units. The compressorsare energized, and the operating sequence and all controls on each unit are factory tested.Refrigeration piping is leak tested and the system is pressurized and sealed with -40°F/-40°C dew point nitrogen.
