Morpac Industries, Inc.Founded by Lloyd Morgan in 1956 as Morgan Power Apparatus, Morpac has

been an electric utility supplier for more than 40 years. We have produced over 200transmission line pullers and tensioners. Our cable handling expertise is highlightedby one of the worlds longest spans, 19,000 feet in British Columbia, Canada. Fieldexperience gained from over 25,000 miles of transmission line construction on fivecontinents and unique jobs ranging from aerial trams to mooring winches havemade Morpac Industries the leader in reliable cable handling equipment.

In 1962 Morgan Power Apparatus of Canada was formed, introducing a series ofheavy duty off-road crawlers. The capability of these machines to carry up to 60 tonsover rough terrain at 20 miles per hour made them ideal for use on transmission lineprojects to transport equipment and supplies. As a result of their outstanding dura-bility, speed and capacity, we adapted over 1,000 crawlers into rock drills, portablespars, and supply carriers for the logging and mining industries as well.

In 1974 Morpac complimented the electric utility market with the acquisition of ahigh voltage disconnect switch company. More than 30,000 substation and distribu-tion switches ranging from7.5kV to 500kV have since been installed throughout theworld, as well as over 1,300 stored energy operators for automation of distributionswitches.

In 1998 Morpac acquired the switch product line of MEMCO Manufacturing out ofCommack, New York. The MEMCO operations have been relocated to Morpac's manu-facturing facility in Tucson, Arizona. In addition, key MEMCO management, engineeringand shop personnel are also now working in Tucson with Morpac.

In our quest to offer the best products in the industry, we have four key criteria that mustbe met before we will even consider any design changes, new products or manufacturingchanges:

• The product must last over 30 years in a harsh environment with virtually no attention.

• Changes should not be made just for the sake of lowering costs.• Only those changes that can produce real product improvements or

enhancements are to be considered.• Changes must make the product more competitive.

Here are some recent product additions and enhancements:

• We have just introduced two new vertical break switches, the EA1 and EA2, with ratingsup to 800kV and 4000 amps maximum continuous currrent rating. Using precision madeCNC parts and extrusions plus minimizing the use of castings on the EA1 and EA2 allowsus to manufacture a high quality switch at comparatively lower costs. See the new cata-log section.

• While keeping the basic design the same, we have made some major changes andimprovements to our motor operator. These changes were initiated by requests and feed-back from customers like you. Check the motor operator section of this catalog.

The EA rotating rear insulator, vertical breakswitch embodies all of the rugged physical char-acteristics of the Memco product line. The designutilizes the best features of both copper and alu-minum in the live parts, maintaining the timeproven concept of silver to copper at all movingcontacts. The result is a truly high performanceswitch.

APPLICATION: With arcing horns or quick breakattachment it can be used for line sectionalizing,bypassing circuit breakers, or opening magnet-izing current of transformer primary connections.Without arcing horns it can be used for isolatingbreakers or as a disconnecting switch.

FEATURES

• Jaw & Hinge ContactsBoth the jaw and hinge employ similar types ofspecial high temperature resistant, copper alloycontact fingers. This material, possessing excel-lent spring characteristics and high conductivity,makes an ideal self contained contact. There isno need for back-up springs or other pressurecompensating devices commonly found on otherswitches. The end result is cleaner and bettercontact arrangement. The reverse loop contactas used on the jaw takes advantage of the mag-netic forces found under fault conditions toincrease the contact pressure of the fingers andto force the blade against the closed positionblade stop.The hinge contact fingers are in continuous con-tact with the switch blade throughout the com-plete opening and closing operation of the switch.

Type EA and EAB


• Current Carrying Parts

High strength, high conductivity aluminum isused where practical throughout the live parts.Blade end transitions are made by either boltedaluminum to copper or threaded copper to alu-minum depending upon the blade diameter. Ineither case, all copper or bronze transition piecesare tinned and the current interchange pointsbetween the tinned copper and aluminum areeffectively sealed to prevent the entrance ofmoisture.All bearings and counterbalancing springs areisolated from the main current path by insulatingbushings. The switch is designed in accordancewith the latest ANSI standards. It is also avail-able, when specified, based upon past industrystandards which limit temperature rise to 30˚ Cover an ambient of 40˚ C.

• Wiping Action & Operation

The rolling action of the blade when opening andclosing the switch provides a positive wiping and cleaning action of the jaw and hinge con-tacts. The jaw contact pressure is relieved by theblade rotation prior to lift out.In the closed position the blade mechanism ismechanically locked over center thereby lockingthe blade closed. In the open position the bladecenter of gravity is located well behind the pivotpoint thereby preventing the blade from fallingclosed.

• Blade Height Adjustment

Blade height adjustment is provided by a veryconvenient arrangement located in the linkagebetween the top of the rotating insulator and theblade.

• Mounting Position

The type EA switch may be mounted in horizon-tal, upright, vertical, or underhung position.Counterbalancing is provided, where required, bycompression type spring assemblies. Conversionin the field from one mounting position to anoth-er can be made with a minimum of difficulty.

• Bearings

Maintenance free bearings are used at the baseof the rotating insulator of all switches. Switchesthrough 72.5 kV are furnished with sleeve or ballbearings. At 121kV and above, ball bearings areused. All bearings are enclosed in weatherproofhousings and are free of maintenance.Live part bearings consist of teflon, nylon, orroller type, depending upon the application. Nofield servicing is required.

• Bases

Rigid galvanized structural steel channel basesare furnished on all switches. Switches rated72.5kV, 1200 ampere and below are normally fur-nished on flat channel bases. Double channelbases are furnished at 121 kV and above.Aluminum bases are available when specified.

• Leveling Bolts

All switches 121 kV and above are furnished withfour leveling bolts per insulator stack to providefast, effective means of aligning insulator stacksin the field.

Type EA and EAB


• Factory Assembled & Adjusted

Switches 48.3 kV and below are pre-assembledand adjusted on insulators at the factory.Switches 72.5 kV and above are assembled andadjusted, less insulators. Only minor adjust-ments, if any, are required at installation.

• Insulators

NEMA standard station post or cap and pin insu-lators are available as specified.

• Field Installation

The simplicity of design assures ease of installa-tion and years of trouble-free service.

Type EAB - CopperVertical Break Switch

FEATURES

The type EAB vertical break switch utilizes copperand bronze for all current carrying parts. In allother respects it is identical with the type EA,described previously. Aluminum is used for coro-na rings and counterbalancing spring housing.Blade end transitions, as described under “EACarrying Parts” are unnecessary. Silver contactmaterial is silver brazed directly to the copperblade tip. The resulting contact is time proven sil-ver to copper. Not all ratings are available in copper, refer to factory.

EA & EAB SWITCHACCESSORIES

• Ground SwitchesGround switches of the same or lower momen-tary ratings as the main switches can be installedon either the jaw or hinge end of the switch.Standard practice is to operate the ground blade90˚ to the main blade. However, ground bladesparallel to the main blade are available. Bothbraid and braidless ground switches are avail-able.

• Quick Break AttachmentsQuick break attachments having the followinginterrupting ratings can be furnished on all EAswitches.

• OutriggersOutriggers of various designs are available forcopper or aluminum conductors.

• Terminal ConnectorsWhen specified terminal connectors can be fur-nished.

Morpac Type EA1 Aluminum Vertical Break Switch

The EA1 incorporates the best of the combined experience of Morpac Industries,Inc. and Memco Manufacturing, Inc. (acquired by Morpac in 1998). The EA1 hasbeen tested to the latest ANSI standards and easily met and exceeded thoserequirements.

Applications: Ratings and dimensions are compatible with the type EA. EA1 liveparts can replace EA live parts to upgrade older, existing switches. In fact EA1 liveparts can be used to replace live parts on switches of other manufacture. Contactus for details.

The EA1 utilizes extrusions and all CNC(computer numerical control) precisionmachined parts. The result is a highquality, yet economical switch.

The maintenance free rotating insulatorbearings are ball type with bronze spin-dles and stainless steel races.

Standards now allow higher tempera-ture rises than 30 degrees. Because ofthe efficient design of the EA1 we canoffer a 30 degree version as an option.See below for further details.

The hinge mechanism for the 1200 and2000 amp switches is identical. Thestandard hinge mechanism current car-rying parts are rated for 30 degree rise.

To make the EA1 a complete 30 degreerise switch an additional pair of jawcontacts and heavier wall blade areused.

Type EA1


Current transfer on all EA1 hinge mech-anisms is through heavy silver plated,threaded copper studs. The threadedstuds also allow the rotational hinge movement for open and closing.

The threaded studs are sealed and lubri-cated for life. No maintenance isrequired.

In designing the EA1 Morpac reviewedevery component to determine whetherextrusions and fabricated parts wouldprovide real improvements over the tra-ditional use of castings. The final con-clusion was that a combination of allthree offered the best solution.

The result is a high quality switch that isactually less expensive to manufacturethan one that relies primarily on cast-ings.

The stainless steel hinge crank or“gooseneck” is precision formed andhas a universal foot for either a 3 or 5inch (75 or 125mm) bolt circle insulator.

Jaw contacts are traditional and timeproven reverse loop design with stain-less steel backup springs, isolated fromthe current path.

The jaw extrusion is also of 6063 T6 aluminum alloy.

Type EA2, 550 to 765 kV Vertical Break Switch

Morpac Industries, Inc. has provided 765 KV vertical reach switches for over 30years. Now with the introduction of the 765 KV EA2 switch, there are two types ofswitches available for 765 KV, the EA2 vertical break and the VR1 vertical reach.Morpac is the only US manufacturer to offer both a vertical reach and vertical breakswitch at 765. Morpac’s experience at 765KV, its experience with vertical break switches at 500 KVand below, along with an increased market demand for 765 KV switches led logical-ly to the development of a vertical break switch for 765 kV applications. Althoughthe switch is relatively new, its design incorporates tried and true principles and hasbehind it over 50 years of vertical break switch design experience.

Our design goal was not to make the cheapest switch that would pass ANSI, but todesign and build a competitive switch that not only passes ANSI but will last 75years.

Type EA1S and VBV


Morpac Vertical Break V Switches

Morpac offers two types of vertical break V style switches, The EA1S and the VBV.The VBV is a true vertical break V switch and the only true vertical break V switchavailable in the world. The EA1S is a slant V vertical break switch with conventionalinsulator arrangement on the hinge end but with a slanted insulator on the station-ary, jaw contact end.

EA1S. The EA1S is an aluminum switch with all live parts common to the EA1. Forfurther feature details refer to the EA1 section of this catalog. The shorter base ofthe EA1S allows for fitting in tight locations and may be ideal for substation voltageupgrade applications, since existing structures may not have to be changed toaccommodate the longer bases required for conventional vertical break switches.

VBV. Morpac’s vertical break VBV switch is a heavy duty, copper, substation classswitch designed to the old 30 degree C rise standard. All current carrying parts arehigh conductivity copper or copper alloy. Contacts are silver to silver. Contactshoes are reverse loop design with stainless steel back up springs isolated from anycurrent path. The VBV is a true “V” style vertical break switch. With a center ofgravity within 5 % of its geometric center the VBV can be safely and securelymounted on a single beam unlike conventional vertical break switches.

GENERALDESIGN FEATURESThe EE center-side-break switch is a two insulator switch with both insulator stacks rotat-ing for operation. The design of the live parts is essentially aluminum with properly treat-ed copper utilized where necessary to achieve MEMCO’s time proven concept of silver-to-copper at all moving contacts.

The EE center-side-break when furnished with arcing horns or quick-break attachment canbe used for line sectionalizing, by passing circuit breakers or opening magnetizing currentof transformers. Without arcing horns it can be used for isolating breakers or as a discon-necting switch.

ADVANTAGES

Economical – The EE center-side-break is more economical than a ver-tical-break or a double-side-breakswitch because it requires one lessinsulator per phase or three perswitch.

Self-balancing – Inherent self-balanc-ing design eliminates the need forcounter-balancing springs except inspecial applications.

Low operating effort – Inherentdesign requires less operating effortfor a given rating than an equivalentvertical-break or side-break switch.

Contact engagement – Full contactengagement easily seen from groundposition.

INDUSTRY STANDARDS

The EE center-side-break switch isdesigned in accordance with latestindustry standards. It is also availablewhen specified based upon pastindustry standards which limit tem-perature rise to 30˚C over an ambientof 40˚ C.

SWITCH OPERATION

Opening and closing of the EE switchis accomplished by rotation of thevertical control pipe.This rotary motion results in a push-pull motion of the interphase of theinsulator stack. Both insulators ofeach phase are rotated simultane-ously in opposite directions by theconnecting rod between them. Whenin the open position each blade hasmoved 90˚.

DETAILS

High-strength, high-conductivity aluminumis used where practical throughout the liveparts. Wherever copper-to-aluminum transitions are made the copper is tinnedand an oxide inhibitor compound is used toprovide an efficient transition.

CONTACTS

The male contact has a tinned copper barsecurely bolted to the aluminum castingwelded to the tubular blade. The tinned cop-per bar has a silver overlay brazed alongeach make-break surface.

The female contact has special, high tem-perature resistant, copper alloy reverse-loopcontact fingers which are bolted to a ruggedaluminum jaw casting. Because of the excel-lent mechanical, electrical and thermal prop-erties of the reverse-loop material there isno need for back-up springs or other pres-sure compensating devices commonlyfound on other switches.

The reverse loop configuration utilizes themagnetic forces produced during fault con-ditions to increase contact pressure.

HINGE

TERMINALPADS

The hinge contact is sealed with a non-ageinglubricant. Current transfer is through the threadedcontact surfaces of a silver plated copper stud andits mating tinned bronze contact housing. Highpressure is established and maintained by a stain-less steel spring, electrically isolated from the cur-rent path. This time proven arrangement has beenused by MEMCO since the mid 1950’s.

All ratings of the EE switch have 4” x 4” aluminumterminal pads with NEMA standard 13/4” x 13/4”drilling for four (4) 1/2” bolts.

LEVELING BOLTS

All switches are furnished with four levelingbolts per bearing to provide fast, effectivemeans of aligning insulator stacks in the field.

SWITCH BASES

Rigid double-channel galvanized steel basesare normally provided on all EE switches.The rigid trussed construction of the basesassures perfect alignment of the insulatorsand smooth operation of the switch. Anequivalent aluminum base is available whenspecified.

INSULATORS

Industry standard station post or cap andpin insulators are normally provided. Othersare available when specified.

BEARINGS

Maintenance free stainless steel bearingswith stainless steel races within a galva-nized housing are provided at the base ofeach insulator.

OPERATINGMECHANISM

Each three pole, group operated type EEswitch is furnished complete with an operat-ing mechanism for either manual or motoroperation depending on customer specifica-tion. Unless otherwise specified by cus-tomer, manually operated switches are fur-nished with a swing handle at 169 kV andbelow. AT 242 kV a worm-gear mechanismreplaces the swing handle.

Each operating mechanism is designed to fitthe customers support structure. Includedwith the operating mechanism are verticalpipe, connecting rods, interphase rods, out-board bearing, open-close position indica-tor, flexible ground strap and provision forcustomer’s padlock. Other accessories suchas auxiliary switches and interlocks can beprovided at an added cost.

FIELDINSTALLATION

The simplicity of the EE center-side-breakswitch design assures ease of installationand years of trouble-free service.

ACCESSORIES

Ground switches, quick break attachments,outriggers, spill gaps, along with terminalconnectors, motor mechanisms and poletop frames are available on request.

CENTER BREAK “V”The Morpac center break “V”, designated Type CBV, is a heavy duty, substation class, 30˚C rise, maintenance free disconnect switch for outdoor installation. The switch is designedfor group operation, and is used in all types of electrical power circuits from 7.5 kV to 230kV, with continuous current ratings from 600 to 2000 amperes. The compact base designand symmetrical features are ideal for direct pole mounting (phase over phase and centerphase opposite), cross arm mounting, and substation installations where a massive sup-port structure is not desirable.

To reduce operating effort at 69 kV, theblades are articulated to create a whipeffect when closing. This insures posi-tive and consistent closing. Blades for48.3 kV do not require articulation toinsure positive closing.

JAW CONTACTCast copper, high conductivity alloy ter-minal, bayonet style with silver inlaybrazed to the contact surfaces.

HINGE CONTACTThreaded copper stud with heavy silverplate, completely sealed and enclosed.Contact pressure is provided by a stain-less steel compression spring to insurecontinuous contact throughout therange of operation. No maintenance isrequired for the hinge contact.

MOUNTINGThe R14-C is suitable for horizontal, ver-tical or underhung mounting on woodor steel structures.

The type R14-C is a three pole, single throw side-break, outdoor disconnect switchavailable in ratings up to 72.5 kV at 600 and 1200 amps. The R14-C is an all copperswitch with high conductivity copper blades and silver inlaid stationary contacts.

Morpac Type CSB


SIDE BREAK SWITCH

The Morpac Type CSB is designed for substation and distribution use., Engineered to meetthe original ANSI 30 degree rise standard, it is a high quality copper switch manufacturedto the stringent standards of all Morpac switches.

Current carrying parts are high conductivity copper or copper alloy. The large cross-sec-tional areas plus a minimum of current interchange surfaces provide a low resistance cur-rent path. Both contact surfaces are plated with high-density silver which prevents gallingand assures good electrical contact under corrosive conditions. The bearing consists of acold rolled C1018 shaft running through oilite bushings (roller bearing available), creatinga maintenance free bearing for the life of the switch.

The switch is designed to meet all applicable NEMA and ANSI standards. All live parts hard-ware is stainless steel/non-ferrous. Tinned terminal pads are available upon request.

The EB rotating center insulator, double sidebreak switch embodies all of the rugged physicalcharacteristics of the Memco product line. Thedesign utilizes the best features of both copperand aluminum in the live parts, maintaining thetime proven concept of silver to copper at allmoving contacts. The result is a truly high performance switch.

APPLICATION: With arcing horns, it can be usedfor line sectionalizing, by-passing circuit break-ers, or opening magnetizing current of trans-former primary connections. Without arcinghorns, it can be used for isolating breakers or asa disconnecting switch.

FEATURES


High strength, high conductivity aluminum isused where practical throughout the live parts.The blade is a one piece aluminum tube with alu-minum castings welded to each end. A tinnedcopper contact piece having a silver strip brazedto each edge is bolted between the two halves ofeach weldment and the joint is effectively sealedwith an inhibiting compound to prevent theentrance of moisture. The switch is designed inaccordance with latest ANSI standards. It is alsoavailable, when specified, based upon past indus-try standards which limit temperature rise to 30˚Cover an ambient of 40˚C.

• Jaw Contacts

The jaw contacts employ special high tempera-ture resistant, copper alloy contact fingers. Thismaterial, possessing excellent spring characteris-tics and high conductivity, makes an ideal selfcontained contact. There is no need for back-up

springs or other pressure compensating devicescommonly found on other switches. The endresult is a cleaner and better contact arrange-ment.The reverse loop contact takes advantage of themagnetic forces found under fault conditions toincrease the contact pressure of the fingers andto force the blade against the closed positionblade stop.

Type EB, EBB (VEB)


• Wiping Action & Operation

The switch is operated by rotation of the centerinsulator stack. During closing the initial 70˚ ofthe insulator rotation swings the blade into thecontact jaws, where the blade tips engage stopsthat limit the swinging action. Continued insula-tor rotation overcomes a biasing spring and tog-gle linkage causing the blade to roll 45˚ on itsaxis, applying contact pressure and latching intothe jaw contact. During opening the first 45˚ ofinsulator rotation allows the compressed springto return to its original position, and workingthrough the toggle linkage, causes the blade toroll and relieve the pressure on the jaw contactloops. Continued insulator rotation swings theblade to the fully open position.

• Leveling Bolts

All switches are furnished with four leveling boltsper insulator stack to provide fast, effectivemeans of aligning insulator stacks in the field.

• Bases

Rigid galvanized structural steel double channelbases are furnished. Aluminum bases are avail-able when specified.

• Bearings

Bearings in live parts are constructed of self-lubricating low friction materials and require nolubrication or maintenance. Main bearing at thebase of the rotating insulator is of heavy dutyshielded ball bearing construction, providing thenecessary strength and rigidity. No field servicingrequired.

• Mounting Position

The inherent balance of the blade allows the EBswitch to be mounted in any position with noneed for counterbalancing. Field conversion toanother position requires no modification.

• Insulators

NEMA standard station post or cap and pin insu-lators are available as specified.

• Field Installation

The simplicity of design assures ease of installa-tion and years of trouble-free service.

Type EBB, Copper Double Side Break Switch

• The EBB, double side break switch is a copper version of the aluminum EB switch.High conductivity copper and copper alloy castings are used in the live, conductingparts.

• The center hinge housing, which is not part of the current path, is made of aluminumto minimize weight of the switch.

• Blade end transitions, or separate blade tips, as described in the EB section are not necessary on the EBB since silver strips are brazed directly to the copper blade tipon the EBB.

• Available ratings are the same as the EB’s. Refer to the rating sheets at the front of this catalog.

Type EBF, Copper Double Side Break Switch

• Blade construction is identical to that of the R14-C. (See R14-C section).• Jaw construction is also identical to that of the R14-C, except that there are two jaws

on the EBF.• As with the R14-C, 69 kV switches have an articulated blade• EBF design is simple, time proven and economical• Ratings up to 72.5 kV at 600 and 1200A.

Type VRVertical Reach Switch

The continued demand for high voltage and extrahigh voltage construction has made it necessaryfor the industry to re-examine conventional sta-tion design practices with a view toward a reduc-tion in space requirements. Spiraling land costsand increasing difficulty in obtaining suitablesubstation sites have further emphasized theneed for more compact designs, without sacrific-ing utility, flexibility and performance. The verti-cal reach switch, utilizing a vertical rather thanhorizontal separation, provides substationdesigners with a means to reduce space require-ments by as much as thirty-five percent.

APPLICATION: The MEMCO vertical reach switchis of the semi-pantograph design. It may beinstalled either directly below and in line with theoverhead bus or on the diagonal at the point ofbus crossover. The terminal pads can bearranged so that the lower bus may extend inany of four directions; in line with switch or per-pendicular to switch.The upper contact of the type VR switch is sup-ported by the user’s overhead bus. Close cooper-ation between switch manufacturer and substa-tion designer, in the early stages of design, ishighly desirable. The switch is available in two(2)‚ models; the VR-1 for application at 550 kVthrough 800 kV, and VR-2 for application at 242kV through 362 kV.

VR-1 FEATURES


The live parts utilize high strength, high conduc-tivity aluminum tubing and castings. Transition tocopper is made in the moving contact areas. Atthe point of transition, copper is hot dip tinnedand bolted to aluminum with stainless steelbolts. The joint is treated with oxide inhibitor andeffectively sealed to prevent the entrance ofmoisture.All bearings and counterbalancing springs areisolated from the main current path by insulatingbushings.

• Upper Contact

The VR-1 switch at 550 kV is adaptable for eitherfixed or strain bus; at 800 kV its application islimited to rigid bus. The following table showsthe maximum contact deviation under which theswitch has been designed to operate.

The upper contact bar consists of a formed cop-per bar with a silver overlay along each of thecontact surfaces. The contact bar is furnishedwith all necessary supporting members forattachment to the overhead bus.The switch jaw employs a multiple-contactreverse loop arrangement which provides uni-form contact pressure throughout the plus-or-minus vertical allowable deviation shown below.This contact arrangement takes advantage of themagnetic forces found under short circuit condi-tions resulting in increased contact pressurethrough the “blow on” effect.


• Switch Operation

In the open position, the blade sections are fold-ed upon themselves, so that the maximum bladeextension is slightly greater than half the opengap dimension. Closure of the switch, created byrotation of the insulator by the operating pipe,causes the blade to unfold in such a manner thatthe jaws rise in a nearly straight vertical path,opening wide as they approach the upper con-tact. Further movement causes the blade sectionsto assume a straight-line vertical relationship,with the jaws clamped firmly on the contact bar.The blade is counterbalanced in all positions sothat only friction forces must be overcome whenopening or closing the switch.

• Operators

The switch is available for either single pole man-ual operation or three pole power operation.

For 4000 Amp, change suffix on catalog number to -40.


VR-2 FEATURES


The blades are made of high strength, high con-ductivity parallel aluminum bus bars which aretrussed to form a rigid unit. Transition to copperis made in the moving contact areas. At the pointof transition, copper is hot dip tinned and boltedto aluminum with stainless steel bolts. The jointis treated with oxide inhibitor and effectivelysealed to prevent the entrance of moisture. Allbearings and springs are isolated from the maincurrent path by insulating bushings.

• Upper Contact

The upper contact consists of a copper platelocated within a bell shaped housing whichshields the contact surface from ice formation.The complete assembly is rigidly fixed to theupper bus.The blade contact consists of multiple reverseloop copper alloy fingers, with silver overlay atthe contact point. When the switch is in the openposition the contact fingers are arranged to touchthe opposing contacts. During closure of theswitch the contact fingers deflect as they slide onthe upper contact plate.The reverse loop design takes advantage of mag-netic forces found under short circuit conditionsto increase the contact pressure through the“blow on” effect.

• Switch Operation

The blade assembly is raised and lowered by thedirect action of a reciprocating, rather than rotat-ing, control insulator. The weight of this insulatorassembly partially balances the weight of theblade - the remainder is balanced by a counter-balance assembly located at the base of the insu-lator stack. A single column insulator furnishesthe main support, and the entire assembly isdesigned for mounting on a single column struc-ture. The blade weight is slightly underbalanced sothat the switch has no tendency to move upwardon its own. A downward pull on the control insu-lator stack will cause the blade to rise and unfoldin such a manner that the blade and contacts fol-low a nearly straight vertical path whenapproaching the upper contact. The contact fin-gers are guided onto the flat copper contact plateby guide horns on the blade and slide approxi-mately 4” onto the plate. Since the actual pivotpoint at the center of the blade (“elbow”) haspassed over-center, there is no force tending toopen the switch.

• Operators

The switch is available for either single pole man-ual operation, three pole manual operation, orthree pole power operation.

Complete manual operating mechanisms are supplied with all group operated switches. Included are operat-ing lever, vertical pipe control, outboard bearing, interphase pipe, levers, clevises, couplings and intermedi-ate guides. Either torsional or reciprocating types are supplied, as best suits each individual installation. Atoggle arrangement is used in both types of controls to mechanically lock the switch in the open or closedposition. Means are also provided to padlock the handle in either position. Position indicators to show OPENor CLOSED are available at extra cost. Flexible grounding braid is supplied with pipe controls. Turnbucklesand insulating fiberglass or porcelain inserts for pipe controls as well as kirk key interlock provisions areavailable at extra cost.

SWITCHES THROUGH 69 kV are supplied with up to 30 feet of galvanized vertical pipe, with intermediateguides and fittings, as standard. Additional lengths, with intermediate guides and fittings, are available atextra cost. The outboard bearing is bronze and requires no maintenance.

SWITCHES RATED AT 115 kV AND ABOVE are supplied with up to 40 feet of galvanized vertical pipe as stan-dard. Additional 10’ to 20’ sections with intermediate guides and fittings are available at extra cost. The out-board bearing is a heavy duty greaseless type ball bearing unit with stainless steel balls. It will give a lifetimeof dependable maintenance-free service under the most adverse conditions.

Manual worm-gear operators are available for either right or left hand operation. The units are designed fordependable service with minimum maintenance and are shipped completely lubricated and adjusted.

Motor operators and auxiliary switches are available to meet any requirements. Please refer to the factory forspecific information and prices.

Morpac’s 3000 series of SEO’s are available to operate most distribution switches on themarket today. They incorporate a custom built 24 VDC permanent magnet motor specifi-cally designed for this service. The unit comes complete with pole mounting hardware andinternal batteries. The unit is available as a basic motor operator, or with auxiliary elec-tronics.

Morpac Motor Operator

Type MOE-1000

The Morpac Motor Operator, Type MOE, is an electrical all weather switch operat-ing device. The standard heavy gauge aluminum cabinet has three hinged, remov-able doors for easy access to all wiring and components. (Stainless steel cabinetsare available as well). The front door padlocks shut. Opening the front doorallows access to the latches for the side doors. A large, bolted conduit entrancepanel is located on the bottom of the cabinet. Morpac’s upper decoupler is used tophysically separate the motor operator from the vertical operating pipe. Thedecoupler can be padlocked in either the open or closed position.

Morpac uses a single stage, heavy duty, sealed cycloid reducer for long mainte-nance free life and extreme duty applications. The open and close limit switchesare infinitely adjustable up to 360 degrees. Operating time is from 6 to 12 sec-onds* for typical 180 degree rotation. Full local control with pushbuttons and indi-cator lights are standard. Also standard are a counter, thermostatically controlledheater and 6 infinitely adjustable auxiliary switches which can be set up as form“c” or “a” and “b” types. Additional auxiliary switch stages are available.Operating voltages available are 120 or 240 VAC and 24, 48, 125 or 250 VDC. 24and 48 VDC units can be provided with batteries and chargers if desired.

Type STV & STU

The STV or STU type of outdoor disconnect isavailable in voltage ratings from 8.25 to 169 kVand in continuous current ratings from 600 to3000 ampere. The STV and STU switches areidentical in design except that one is arranged forvertical mounting and the other for underhungmounting.

APPLICATION: As a single pole disconnect it canbe readily used in substations or on transmissionand distribution lines.

FEATURES

• Jaw Contact

High-pressure, self-wiping line type contacts areprovided on all switches. The contact pressure ismaintained by heavy phosphor bronze springwashers, or stainless steel coil springs, properlypositioned on each side of the contact surfaces.

High-pressure, self-wiping ring shaped hingecontacts are standard on all switches. Heavyphosphor bronze spring washers assure uniformcontact loading.

• Unitized Jaw & HingeConstruction

Single unit castings are used for both hinge andjaw terminals thereby reducing the number oftransfer points and providing a better distributionof current.

• Contact Surfaces

Standard contact surfaces are determined byswitch rating and contact construction and areshown in the following table. Other combinationsof silver and copper may be specified on thehinge and/or jaw as a special option.

• Blade Construction

All switches are furnished with blades of harddrawn high conductivity round edge copper bar.Switches through 2000 ampere are provided withwide truss type blades. Copper cross braces pro-viding extra strength and rigidity are utilized onthe larger switches.

• Large Opening Eye

A large opening eye of heavy bronze construc-tion assures ease of operation.

• Positive Blade Latch

Positive side-operating, phosphor bronze spring-type blade latches prevent the switch from open-ing as a result of fault current or through vibra-tion.

• Pry-Out Leverage

The action of the opening eye with its increasedleverage spreads the blade latches and impartsan easy initiating motion to open the switch.

• Rigid Blade Guides

Rigid cast bronze blade guides are provided toassure positive closing of blade on each opera-tion, regardless of position of hookstick.

• Terminals

Terminal pads are provided with NEMA standard9/16” holes on 13/4” centers.

• Blade Stop

Double 90˚ open blade stops are standard. Otheropening stops can be provided when specified.

• Counterbalancing

Switches rated 72.5 kV, (5” B.C.) and above arenormally furnished with a compression springcounterbalancing assembly which offsets theweight of the blade when opening or closing theswitch. This unique feature makes it practical touse this switch through 169 kV.

• Bases

Rigid galvanized structural steel channel basesare furnished on all switches. Switches through72.5 kV, (3” B.C.) are normally furnished on flatchannel bases. Welded, built-up double channelbases are furnished at the higher voltage ratings.Aluminum bases are available when specified.

• Factory Assembled & Adjusted

Switches 48.3 kV and below are pre-assembledand adjusted at the factory. Switches 72.5 kV andabove are assembled and adjusted, less insula-tors. Only minor adjustments, if any, are requiredat installation.

• Angular Mounted Switches

A single pole angular mounted disconnect isavailable at 600, 1200, and 2000 ampere from8.25 kV through 38.0 kV. It is designated as a typeSTA and utilizes the same parts that are commonon the STV and STU switch.

• Standard Specifications

The type STV and STU disconnect switches meetor exceed all of the requirements of NEMA, IEEEand ANSI specifications. They are designed togive years of trouble-free service under the mostadverse atmospheric and climatic conditions.

• Tandem Transfer and RegulatorBypass Switches

These switches can be arranged for either under-hung or vertical mounting and employ the samedesign concepts as the STV and STU discon-nects.

Morpac Design Hookstick Switches


The Morgan hook operated switch line offers a wide selection of configurations to accom-modate any installation, including tandem transfer and non-sequenced regulator by-passmodels. Designed for heavy duty substation and distribution use, these switches have beenoperating in extreme conditions around the world far in excess of 20 years. Switches meetor exceed the original ANSI C37.34 30˚ C temperature rise standard.


• Base

All steel bases are hot-dip galvanized per ASTMA123-89ea1. Special bases can be provided fordifferent mounting configurations. Aluminumbases also available.

• Terminals

NEMA standard 2 and 4 hole terminal pads aremachined out of cast contact metal alloy C83300.Tinned terminal pads are available upon request.

• Ratings

Voltage ratings up to 169 kV. Current rating up to3000 Amperes.

• Hinge

Belleville washers insure a constant pressure onthe hinge contact.

• Contact

High-pressure, self-wiping contacts are provided.Cast bronze “ears” enable portable load-busteruse on all switches.

• Latch

A positive latching mechanism eliminates thepossibility of the blade opening due to vibrationor high fault current. The hook must be pulled inorder to release the blade latch.

• Blade

All blades are made from high conductivity,round edge, hard drawn bus copper alloy 110 forsuperior performance and long life.

Interrupters


QUICK BREAK WHIPS

There are many factors which govern the interrupting capabilities of a disconnect switch. Some of thesefactors are: weather conditions, the amount of current, speed of operation, contamination, and the recoveryvoltage. Very high speeds of contact separation are required to establish the dielectric strength of the air gapahead of the rise in recovery voltage.

Morpac has taken the speed of operation requirement out of the hands of the switch operator anddesigned it into the quick break whip, thereby keeping the velocity constant. This device is a whip machinedfrom spring quality stainless steel. The whip is tapered, permitting maximum deflection and high tip speeds,without exceeding the elastic limit of the material.

In the closed position, the whip is engaged in a retaining catch and as the switch is opened, the whip issubjected to a large deflection and, as the switch continues to open, the whip is released and moves withspring action at high speed to the full open position. Through special design the whip is sufficiently damp-ened so that over-travel does not occur, and rebound is held to a minimum.

The recommended maximum interrupting range of application for the Morpac quick break whip is:

Magnetizing current in modern transformers is about 1 to 6 amperes. Where the actual value for a par-ticular transformer is not known, it can be approximated. For units in the area of 5,000 KVA, the magnetizingcurrent is approximately 1.5% of full load. At 10,000 KVA and above, 1.0% is a good approximation. These val-ues are based on single and three phase multiple winding transformers. Autotransformer magnetizing cur-rent is normally less than the multiple winding units.

Field experience by utilities has shown that in network/loop/parallel switching up to 100 amperes of loadcurrent can be safely interrupted in 69 kV systems and below. This is due to the low recovery voltage acrossthe switch as compared to radial feed/line charging where a high recovery voltage is seen.

The actual system parameters should be verified by the customer before specifying the addition of a quickbreak whip.

Amprupter™


The Morpac Amprupter™ provides full load switching of 600 amps on 15, 25 and 38 KV systems for eithersubstation or feeder applications. It is designed to operate under adverse conditions for the following appli-cations and others as well:

• Full load dropping at full line voltage• Load splitting or loop and parallel switching• Interruption of cable or line charging currents• Interruption of transformer magnetizing currents

Morpac’s Amprupter™ is an expulsion type interrupter that vents gases safely without an external arc. Thecontacts are spring loaded. When the switch is opened by line personnel, the pick up arm is engaged. Oncethe arm has traveled over center, the contacts snap open. This opening speed is independent of the opera-tor’s speed. Thus safe and consistent interruption is assured.

Morpac’s amprupters are typically used on Morpac’s CSB switches, but can be adapted to other manufactur-er’s switches as well.

Vacuum Interrupters


The Morpac Type VI Vacuum Interrupter is a field tested and proven design which gives you bolt-on loadbreak capability. The unit is factory sealed and adjusted for ease of installation, whether you are mounting iton a new Morpac switch or retrofitting it to another manufacturer's switch. It is designed to last the life of theswitch with no maintenance. Each module within the unit can be individually field tested to verify its integri-ty.

Refer to the table to determine the number of modules required for your application. Please also note thatdepending on the type of switch, there may be a mechanical limit to the size of interrupter that can be used.For instance, most center break switches are limited to one bottle.

Single Bottle Interrupters for Reduced Voltage Applications

Single bottle interrupters can be used at higher line voltages for parallel switchingor loop splitting applications. Caution: The peak recovery voltage must neverexceed 30 KV for these applications.


Condition of Sale & WarrantyThe Company warrants to the purchaser that the apparatus to be delivered hereunder will be freefrom defects in material, workmanship, and title and will be of the kind and quality designated ordescribed in the contract. The foregoing warranty is exclusive and in lieu of all other warrantieswhether written, oral, or implied (including any warranty or merchantability of fitness for purpose).If it appears within five years from the date of shipment by the Company that the apparatus deliv-ered hereunder does not meet the warranties specified above and the Purchaser notifies theCompany promptly, the Company shall thereupon correct any defect, including nonconformancewith the specifications, at its option, either by repairing any defective part or parts or by makingavailable at the Company’s plant a repaired or replacement part. The conditions of any tests shallbe mutually agreed upon, and the Company shall be notified of, and may be represented at alltests that may be made. The liability of the Company to the Purchaser (except as to title) arisingout of the supplying of the said apparatus, or its use, whether on warranty, contract, or otherwise,shall not in any case exceed the cost of correcting defects in the apparatus as herein providedand upon the expiration of said five years, all such liability shall terminate. The foregoing shall con-stitute the sole remedy of the Purchaser and the sole liability of the Company.

Freight prepaid and allowed on orders over $5,000.00 in the continental USA. For orders less than$5,000.00, freight is prepaid and billed. Products shipped on truck via common carriers FOB des-tination. Morpac will file any freight claims as long as any loss or damage is noted on the receivingcopy of the freight bill. Damage that is not noted at time of receiving can not be paid by Morpac.

The Company’s prices do not include sales, use, excise, or similar taxes. Consequently, in addi-tion to the price specified herein, the amount of any present or future sales, use, excise, or othersimilar tax applicable to the sale of the apparatus hereunder shall be paid by the Purchaser, or inlieu thereof the Purchaser shall provide the Company with a tax-exemption certificate acceptableto the taxing authorities.

Factory written approval is required for all returns. Returns are subject to freight and restockingcharges. Cancellation charges are based on manufacturing and engineering costs incurred as ofthe date of cancellation.

A Field Service Engineer is available at a cost of $800.00 per day, plus transportation, lodging andmeals. Charges are from time of departure until time of return.

Export crating costs an additional 10% of quoted price, and freight will be billed to purchaser.

Shipping dates are approximate and are based upon prompt receipt of all necessary information.The Company shall not be liable for delays in delivery or failure to manufacture or deliver (1) dueto causes beyond its reasonable control, or (2) due to acts of God, acts of the Purchaser, acts ofcivil or military authority, priorities, fires, strikes, floods, epidemics, war, riot, delays in transportation,or car shortages, or (3) inability due to causes beyond its reasonable control to obtain necessarylabor, materials, components, or manufacturing facilities. In event of any such delay the date ofdelivery shall be extended for a period equal to the time lost by reason of the delay.

In no event shall the Company be liable for special or consequential damages. The Company’sliability or any other claim for loss or liability arising out of or connected with this contract, or themanufacture, sale, delivery, resale, or use of any apparatus covered by this contract (including,but not limited to, loss or liability arising from breach of contract) shall in no case exceed the unitprice of such apparatus or part thereof involved in the claim, except as provided in the paragraphentitled “Warranty’.

A minimum charge of $100.00 is required on all orders.

Morpac recommends that no spare parts be purchased until needed. We can ship any partcommonly needed in 24 hours from our stock.
