CBR AIRPORT BEST SAFETY WEEKOUR EFFORTS FOR THE RECENT AIRPORT SAFETY WEEK WAS THE “BEST IN AUSTRALIA” ACCORDING TO THE AUSTRALIAN AIRPORT’S ASSOCIATION.

Airport Safety Week is an initiative by the Australian Airport’s Association (AAA) and Australasian Airport Safety Forum (AASF) inviting airports from all over Australia and New Zealand to get involved to reinforce safety on-airport.

Canberra Airport hosted Airport Safety Week with safety-oriented events held in the Airport Terminal‘Safety HQ’ which included daily guest speakers, exhibitors, competitions, a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) walk on the apron, a Man Cave, a Ladies Lounge, and free health checks.

“At Canberra Airport we work hard with the airlines to ensure passengers and travellers are as safe as possible at all times. This happens through our staff who are incredibly important to us. So we wanted to maximise this industry initiative to remind all our staff not only how important safety is in looking after travellers and in doing their work, but also looking after their health in their everyday lives.” Matthew Brown, Head of Aviation, Canberra Airport.

The Airport Safety Week was held from the 29th Sept - 3rd October, 2014.

HUSTLE & SCOUT AND THE FORAGEHANGAR 47 IN FAIRBAIRN WAS RECENTLY TRANSFORMED INTO TWILIGHT MARKETS.

Over 6000 people poured through the gates and browsed the fashion, food and beverage stalls. There was a pop-up bar for fans to watch the AFL grand final, as well as live music and a free polaroid photo booth.

The popular markets outgrew New Acton and seemed to fit perfectly with the heritage feel of Fairbairn and the warehouse-style of a hangar. Hustle & Scout founder Tegan McAuley said “It was overwhelming to see such a turnout.”

The next Hustle & Scout and The Forage markets will be held at Hangar 47, Fairbairn on the 22nd of November.

DEFENCE FORCE ON THE LONG RIDECONGRATULATIONS TO THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE TEAM THAT RECENTLY PARTICIPATED IN THE LONG RIDE.

To raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, 220 Defence personnel, led by the Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, were out in their communities around Australia doing events and speeches to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer.

This included a ‘Show and Shine’ held at Brindabella Business Park and culminated in a national ride in early October of over 450 motorcyclists from around Australia riding to Uluru on The Long Ride.

Commander Guy Blackburn, Defence co-ordinator of the support to the Long Ride said, “By 2017 nearly a quarter of a million Australian men will have prostate cancer. If detected early, it is the most treatable cancer of all. The Brindabella Business Park motorcyle Show and Shine helped our efforts in fundraising and raising awareness in Canberra immensely.”

The Defence team raised over $160,000 nationwide, with Canberrans donating over $100,000 of the total amount of nearly $310,000 to put towards reducing the impact of Prostate Cancer in Australian men.

HELPING TO TACKLE SCABIES THE SNOW FOUNDATION HAS COMMITTED ANOTHER $150,000 TO ‘ONE DISEASE’, WHOSE PRIMARY GOAL IS TO ELIMINATE SCABIES.

Crusted scabies is a little-known, highly infectious and debilitating condition caused by uncontrolled proliferation of scabies mites. Rare in urban areas, rates of crusted scabies reported in remote Indigenous communities in Northern Australia are the highest in the world.

“Three years ago we became One Disease’s first donor by committing $100,000 to kick start the pilot and help attract more funding from other sources,” said Snow Foundation CEO, Georgina Byron.

“When we visited East Arnhem in 2012 to see the work first hand we were impressed by the holistic approach and the dedication of Dr Buddhi Lokuge and the team. We promptly committed another $200,000 over two years.

“Where so many other Indigenous health programs have failed, this one is an exemplar and we believe our additional contribution of $150,000 over two years will be very well invested,” Ms Byron said.

More information on One Disease can be found at www.1disease.org and www.snowfoundation.org.au
