We realise how stressful going through an airport can be for children on the AutisticSpectrum, especially when it is a break in their routine and they are unsure of what toexpect.

This book will take you on the journey through Manchester Airport using photographs toexplain the process you will take. It has been divided into the various stages of your

journey through the airport describing what you will see and hear from arriving at theairport, going through security and through to returning back home.

In each section there is a tick box for you to interact and engage with your child in thesights and sounds along your journey through the airport.

We have also included space, at the back of the book, for your child to jot down anyworries they may have and also a fun zone to fill time when you may be waiting around.

What you see when you firstarrive at Manchester Airportdepends on how you got here.

Manchester Airport train station

is linked to over 100 destinations.From the station you will walkthrough the skylink to get toeither terminal 1 or 2.

The skylink is a connectedwalkway with travelators, like flatescalators, for you to walk on.

Outside each terminal is a taxirank and there are also shuttlebuses, which take you to andfrom the larger car parks.

We have multi-storey car parksfor a shorter stay or larger carparks for a longer stay.

At the check-in desk you willhand over your passport andtickets to the staff behind thedesk. The staff will hand theseback after they have looked atthem.

You will need to put yoursuitcase on the conveyor beltsnext to the desk so they can beweighed and sent off to beloaded onto the plane.

You will then be given yourboarding card and can go throughsecurity from here.

The check-in processOnce you are in the correct terminal and you have yourcheck-in desk number, you need to make your way to thatdesk once it is open.

Liquids, gels or pastes of 100mlor less need to go in a clearplastic bag. This bag has to gothrough the X-ray machine. Youwill also go through the boardingcard reader machines.

You will need to take off outergarments and place them on ablack tray, which gets passedthrough the X-Ray machine.These items will only be awayfrom you for a matter of minutesand you can even see your tray

come through the other side.

Every person going throughsecurity will need to walk throughthe metal detector archway onhis or her own. This applies toevery single person but it will onlytake a few seconds to walk

through.

You will hear some beeps fromthe machines, which show thatthey are working, and securitystaff may search you. This willtake a matter of seconds andthey may ask you to remove your

shoes to go through the X-raymachine.

Going through securityThe security process can be one of the more stressfulareas of the airport, but it is very important. This makessure that you, your family and friends are safe on the plane.

The departure lounge offersdifferent things for differentpassengers. So if you want to dosome shopping, have a sit downmeal or light snack or to relaxand prepare for your flight it is

all here for you.

There are tax and duty freeshops where you can buy thingsyou might need for the plane oryour holiday. You will need toshow your boarding card if youbuy anything in the shops.

Around an hour before yourdeparture time keep watchingthe flight information boards.

When your flight number says goto the gate that is when yourplane is nearly ready to board.

Once you have reached your gateyou will find seats to use before

you can start boarding the plane.

To get to your plane you might godown an airbridge, which is atunnel that connects the planedoors to the terminal doors.

Or you might get a bus and be

driven for a short while to thesteps on the plane.

Or you might walk out and straightup the steps to the door of theplane.

When you land be prepared forthe plane to be quite noisy as allthe passengers make their wayoff. Make sure you get all yourpersonal belongings beforeleaving the plane. You will either

get off the plane onto steps, bybus, or through the airbridge.

Once you are in the terminal youhave to go through immigration.This means showing a member ofstaff your passport so they cancheck it and let you through to

the baggage reclaim hall.

This is the area for you to pickup your suitcase which will havebeen taken off the plane. Look atthe information screens to findout which carousel relates toyour plane. You may need to get a

trolley ready and wait for yourbag to come round.

After collecting your bags youwill go through customs, this isthe area which stops people

bringing illegal items into the U.K.In this area you might seeuniformed staff with snifferdogs waiting for passengers tocome through. These well-behaved dogs are speciallytrained to sniff out illegal itemsin peoples bags.

Follow the signs to get into thearrivals area. Here you will findthe information desk if you needany help and signs to the taxirank, shuttle buses and the trainstation.

Returning homeReturning back to the airport is the last part ofyour journey.

The journey of your suitcaseWhilst you are going through the airport your suitcase also has to go on ajourney to meet up with you when you land.

At check-in you will handover your suitcasewhere it will be sent offon a conveyor belt forthe start of its journeyonto your plane.

As you go throughsecurity your suitcasegets X-rayed and sentthrough the baggagesystem.

When you are calledto your boarding gateand ready to board

the plane, yoursuitcase will be on abaggage truck anddriven out to yourplane to be loaded.

Before the planetakes off, you andyour suitcase will beon the same planeready to meet againwhen you land.

You will pick up your

suitcase when you getoff the plane and getinto the baggage hall.

When you haveentered theshops, food andseating area yoursuitcase will bepacked up with

The travelators in the skylink maybe unusual for young passengers towalk on but there is space eitherside to walk normally.

If you park in a long stay car parkyou will get a shuttle bus to theterminal, these have lots of room forsuitcases and say on the front ofthe bus where they are heading to.

Give yourself plenty of time to getto the airport.

Use your journey to the airport toreinforce what you can expect to

happen when you arrive.

The terminals may be busy or quietdepending on the time of year andthe time of your flight, so prepare forthis.

Aim to arrive when your check-indesk opens to give yourself themaximum time so you are notrushing.

Many airlines now have onlinecheck-in where you print off yourboarding card before you come tothe airport. Please check with yourairline if you can access this

procedure. There are also express check-in

machines in the check-in hall for youto use. You can print off yourboarding card here and just need totake your suitcases to the bag drop.

At check-in you may want to thinkabout asking for an aisle or windowseat and if you would prefer to sit

nearer the toilet in the plane.

Allow an adult to go through themetal detectors first so when thechild goes through they can seesomeone they recognise.

Remove every outer garment of

clothing, including shoes and belts,before going through the metaldetectors.

You might be going through securityat the same time as lots of people orit might be quite quiet.

Let a member of staff know that youare travelling with an autistic childand they will be able to help.

Travelling tipsFor parents and carers of children on the Autistic Spectrum

You may find it helpful to find seatstogether and set up a place whereyou can wait until your flight.

In the shops you can buy liquids, gels

or pastes over 100ml for you to takeon the plane.

Let the boarding staff know you aretravelling with a passenger on theAutistic Spectrum and they will beable to help you.

Ask at the boarding gate which routeyou will take to get to the plane soyou can prepare.

You may decide to wait and board

near the end to minimise the amountof time spent on the plane. However,please note that some airlines do notallocate seats.

Or you may prefer to board first soyou can get to your seat and preparefor the flight before the plane getsbusy.

Immigration may be busy or quietdepending on other flights which arelanding at the same time, so beprepared to wait in a queue.

All the baggage carousels haveestimated times for the last bag toarrive.

Make a game out of spotting yoursuitcases.

If you have anyone meeting you inarrivals let the child know to expect tosee them.
