SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE…

Attitude…Our Choice I recently saw a poster that said “Attitude is a Powerful Force”, and it had a picture of a massive wave in the ocean. The words and picture say so much. Unlike a wave in the ocean, attitude is something that we have control over. We have the ability to choose what our attitude is each and every day and with every circumstance. How we approach every day is totally up to us. The powerful force that attitude carries can be positive or negative; we decide. Just about everyone reading this can find something positive about the circumstances that surround us. We are all blessed in many ways whether it is the love of our family, the country we live in, or even our opportunity to work and learn at a great school. In turn we also have things in our life that are diffi-cult and not so positive. Economic times, puzzling governmental decisions, and the rigors of every day life can be very trying and can certainly produce a cloud of negativity. Many of the ups and downs of our lives are things we have no control over. What we do have control of is our attitude and how we deal with them. The “powerful force” that our attitude brings not only affects how we act but can also have an effect on the attitude of the people around us. We all know people that focus on the positive aspects of their lives and in turn create an environment that is contagious and makes others happy. Unfortunately, some people have a negative attitude toward everything that happens each day. It seems like these people want to make company for their misery. Attitude is powerful and conta-gious. A positive attitude can lift people around you, or it can bring others down, again a choice. A teacher recently told me a story about how her husband taught a valuable lesson to their young children when he woke them up each morning for school. He simplified the lesson by using a couple of characters from a popular children’s book that we are all familiar with. When he woke the kids up he simply told them that they get to decide whether they were going to have an “Eeyore Day” or a “Tigger Day”. Seems almost too simple, but it’s an approach that we could all give a try.

Sincerely, John J. Krimmel, IV

CURRICULUM CORNER What is this Common Core?

Many of you may have heard or read that the State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards as the official curriculum for all K-12 schools. What does this mean? How does it affect Airport students? What about funding? Does it really change anything? The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of K-12 standards that were developed in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders including content experts, state representatives, teachers, school administrators, and parents. The standards establish clear and consistent goals for learning that will prepare America's children for success in college and the work force. The CCSS have been woven into all curriculum at Airport Community Schools. From the purchase of our new math curriculums (Envision, Digits, and MyMathLab) to the ongoing development of the Language Arts Curriculum. The instructional change of CCSS has been accompanied by significant professional development and hundreds of hours of study and hard work on the part of the ACS staff. Preparing staff to teach a different way, for the students to do more of the thinking and answering with the teachers guiding their discussions, rather than telling them the answers. For ACS students I have personally seen students having discussions and debates that I hadn’t seen in the past. Students are taking ownership over their learning and figuring out the most important question in education…WHY. Why is that the answer? Why did this happen? Why? When they can answer the Why question, students have a greater understanding of what they are learning. While we haven’t finished the work of the CCSS, in fact I am not sure the work will ever be finished as the demands of college and work in the world are constantly changing, ACS is leading the way in many ways in Monroe County and the State. We will contin-ue to look for and develop curriculums that prepare our students to be College and Career Ready. Submitted by Greg Roberts, Director of Educational Services

AHS TEACHER RECEIVES GREEN APPLE FINANCIAL EDUCATION AWARD Monroe Bank & Trust (MBT) announced the winners of their first annual Green Apple Financial Education Awards, at a ceremony held on October 22, at Monroe County Community College’s Meyer Theater. MBT created the Green Apple Awards to recognize MBT employees and non-MBT community partners who go above and beyond to teach others good practices in personal finance. Airport High School Teacher Jill Bradley was one of the organizations or individuals selected for 2013.

"We are proud of our continued commitment to financial literacy in our local communities, and equally proud to recognize the recip-ients of our inaugural Green Apple Award,” Doug Chaffin, President and CEO said. “Through their efforts, these individuals and organizations have provided a significant impact to insure financial stability in the lives they touch.”

With comprehensive financial literacy programs including the elementary school Partnership In Edu-cation, high school EverFi, adult level MBTeach, as well as collaboration with the Monroe County Learning Bank and GreenPath Debt Solutions; there are MBT financial education programs for every age and life stage.

MBT partner winners were honored as community leaders going above and beyond to promote financial literacy through their schools and organiza-tions. “As a community bank we see how increasing awareness in personal finance empowers our families, friends and neighbors. When many are com-bining their effort that’s what initiates success. Congratulations to all the winners!” said Jennifer Tucker, MBT Marketing Officer, who manages the bank’s financial education and outreach programs.

MBT has been recognized for its financial education programs by the Amer-ican Bankers Association (ABA), the Independent Community Bankers As-sociation (ICBA) and is a recipient of the Monroe Rotary Service Above Self award. The MBTeach financial education program was developed and launched in 2009, and provides on-going formal literacy instruction and curricula to non-profits, schools and businesses. Over 4,000 people have attended classes since its inception. Submitted by High School Principal Chris Lukosavich

AIRPORT VIRTUAL ACADEMY Airport Virtual Academy is proud to have a fantastic teaching staff that has a passion for mentoring, instructing, and tutoring students. One of the biggest misnomers in on-line education is the role of the certified instructor. Although the platform of on-line education is different than traditional education the role of the instructor is just as important.

Our AVA teaching staff consists of Jeanne Feldpausch, a very experienced special education instructor and Kayli Schelosky, a first year teacher who also happens to be a proud Airport graduate. Mrs. Schelosky also owns a business that offers tutoring to students. Our instructors are asked to provide many tasks everyday. Each day the instructors are providing one on one tutoring to students, leading small group lessons with students who may be having difficulties, leading group discus-sions on academic strategies and successful habits, mentoring students who may be working from alternative environments, traveling to provide tutoring or homebound instruction to students in alternative environments, meeting with and discussing academic plans and goals with parents and students, and tracking and creating academic plans for daily progress for students. This is a complex task that requires a staff that is patient, passionate, a diverse knowledge of multiple subjects, and are able to adjust throughout the day with little time to

relax. We are so fortunate to have Mrs. Schelosky and Mrs. Feldpausch who have these character-istics that lead to a successful on-line educator. Submitted by Jason Mensing, AVA Supervisor

SPARKING FUTURE CAREERS

Airport High School students, Jacob J. Jones (senior) and James Fuller (junior) were featured in the Monroe Evening News this month for their participation in the Welding program through DCTC. Welding is one of 22 programs offered in the region through the Downriver Career Technical Consortium. The consortium is composed of nine school districts. Airport is the only Monroe County school district in the consortium. The programs grow each year according to Mary Brockschmidt, director of Career and Technical Education for the consortium. She states that “when students come into high school, we want them to look at academics and what they will do in the future.” This welding program, along with the many other vocational programs Airport offers through DCTC, offers hands-on experi-ence to help prepare students for potential careers. Jacob says that he now knows his future is in welding and James plans on going into the pipefitters union when he graduates. Submitted by the High School Counseling Office

SCIENCE TEACHER ERICA CROCK Erica Crock attended Flat Rock Community High School followed by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from Eastern Michigan University. She has taught summer school for Grosse Ile Middle School and High School Science at Milan, and has coached girls’

volleyball, basketball, and softball at all age levels. Currently, Erica is working on her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in digital learning and teaching. She enjoys utilizing as much technology into the classroom as she can. She is excited to be joining the NCE team!

Currently, the life science classes at NCE are in the process of creating their own websites via weebly in order to help educate others on the domains and kingdoms in relation to classification systems. The students are excited to do this because they feel that learning the tool of creating websites is something that they will utilize after their high school career is completed. Look for updates in future issues of the Jet Gazette to see examples of our students’ work! Submitted by Erica Crock, Science Teacher

CHEMISTRY MAGIC AT WAGAR Wagar's 7th & 8th Grade Science Club launched their 2013-2014 club year with a special speaker, Dr. Emil Lozanov, from Wayne State University. Dr. Lozanov, a frequent volunteer for the Detroit Section of the American Chemical Society's Kids & Chemistry, demonstrated "Chemistry Magic" to a spell bound group of students. Students watched as liquids disappeared, reappeared, changed colors, changed temperatures, and changed states. They learned the differences between chemical and physical changes and how one plus one doesn't necessarily equal two. They watched snow being made, bal-loons being pierced without popping, and cups completely disintegrate.

Dr. Lozanov inspired the students to look for the science behind the magic. His love for science and for learning was contagious and has left a lasting impact on our science club members. It was an educational experience that continues to be analyzed in the minds of those present. Submitted by Wagar Teacher and Club Advisor Liz Hopper

GOLD RUSH Each month the National Honor Society likes to do a service project to benefit the community. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the color is gold. We asked Talan, a student, what his favorite thing has been throughout his cancer and treatment, and he said a camp he went to called “Happy Days.” So in turn we called our project “Gold Rush” and sold gold ribbons at lunch for $1.00 each. The following week NHS members randomly selected classrooms to “Gold Rush” and the students wearing the gold ribbons received candy. We raised a total of $500 and it was all sent to Happy Days. A big thank you to everyone who participated and supported us and hopefully we can do it again next year and be even more successful! Submitted by High School Student Fallon Vasiliauskas

TENTH GRADE CRUCIBLE PROJECTS Students in Renee Caldwell and Holly Himick’s Language Arts classes show off their own individual skills while being assessed of their understanding of the play, The Crucible. Students selected an individual or group project. Students could choose to act out a scene from the play, build a home or a courtroom that reflected Puritan architecture, sew a piece of clothing or an approved project of choice.

Jake Fahnestock and Colin McFarland chose to create a home. They used over 3,000 pop-sicle sticks to complete their project in four days. They enjoyed being able to create a hands-on project. James Malvitz created a painting depicting four different acts of the play.

We D.A.R.E. you to! Students in all Wagar 5th grade classes have been participating in the D.A.R.E. program. Many of us remember D.A.R.E. as being Drug Abuse Resistance Education, but in recent years, the program has evolved into a course in standing up for yourself and your friends. D.A.R.E. now stands for: Define, Assess, Respond and Evaluate. The program is teaching students to Define the problem they may be facing, Assess their options, Respond to the others, and Evaluate their decision. Along with learning the importance of active listening and communicating, students are also learning to stand against drugs, violence and bullying. Deputy John Gurganus, Airport Community Schools liaison officer, has been guiding students through role playing, collaborating, and mentoring during this 12 week program. D.A.R.E. graduation, always a memorable event for 5th graders, will be held on December 20, 2013. For more information on the D.A.R.E. program, please visit www.DARE.com

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO! 1. Be your kids' greatest fan. Compliment them on all of their efforts, the strength of their character and their individuality. 2. Get your kids involved in adult-supervised after-school activities. Ask them what types of activities they're interested in and

contact the school principal or guidance counselor to find out what activities are available. Sometimes it takes a bit of experi-menting to find out what your kids are best suited for, but it's worth the effort. Feeling competent makes kids much less likely to use drugs.

3. Help your kids develop tools they can use to get out of alcohol or drug related situations. 4. Get to know your children's friends and their parents. Call them and check to make sure they share in your views on alcohol,

tobacco and other drugs. 5. Call kids' parents if their home is to be used for a party. Make sure that the party will be alcohol-free and supervised by adults. 6. Set curfews and enforce them. Let kids know the consequences of breaking curfew. 7. Encourage open dialogue with your children about their experiences. Make sure your children understand that they can ask you

anything and that you will give them an honest answer. 8. Set a no-use rule for alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. 9. Sit down for dinner with your children at least once a week. Use the time to talk, don't eat in front of the TV. 10. Get and stay involved in your children's lives. Submitted by District D.A.R.E. Coordinator Mandy Marut

FIFTH GRADE CAMP EXPERIENCE After months of anticipation and preparation, our 5th grade students and teachers finally went to camp! We spent a fun-filled week at Camp Storer in Jackson, Michigan. There were 133 fifth grade students attending and 8 high school students who served as cabin leaders. The students had a won-derful time participating in many outdoor and evening activities.

The most popular outdoor activities were the rock climbing wall (The Tower) and the horseback riding. We had several students who actually made it to the top of the 50 ft. wall! Evening activities included a Dutch Auction, Camp Fire, Underground Raiload, and a Square Dance. These activities were both educational and fun for everyone! We had delicious meals and even learned about what we can do to help the environment by limiting our waste. Our goal was “Zero Waste” and we came very close to reaching that on our last day! A special thank you to all of the cabin leaders and our teachers who made this such a wonderful experi-ence for our students!

The team consisted of seniors: Darrian Young, Nicole Huntsman, and Tabby Higgins along with sopho-mores: Rhianna Julien and McKayla Brumley.

The team headed to the State competition in Midland which lasted 4 days, and they placed 7th in the state. “It's hard not to get down on yourself when you are trying so hard to control a 1000 pound plus horse, and all it takes is a simple mistake that prevents you from placing in your class," stated Coach Pershing, “But the team’s attitude to do their best takes over. They work so hard year round to make it to state, that when you go into a class with 36 or more riders the nerves take over. But when you look at the big pic-ture and realize they placed 7th out of 200 plus schools, you realize how impressive it was!" Submitted by Coach Judi Pershing

Anyone who would like to brighten the day of a local family can stop by Ansons Piz-zeria located at 9811 Exeter Rd. and Carleton Sav-Mor Pharmacy located at 201 Medical Center Drive and select an ornament that lists an item needed to make a communi-ty member’s Christmas special. Over the years, we have had up to 70 families that we have assisted to ensure their Christmas was taken care of. If you would like to participate, please make a point of visiting one of the 3 sites to find out what is needed or contact Kim Weeg at 654-4058 or Judi Per-shing at 654-6205.

Trees will go up the week before Thanksgiving to allow the community to find bar-gains on Black Friday. They will remain up until the week before Christmas. EYLER STUDENTS DANCE TO HELP FEED OUR COMMUNITY

Eyler students participated in their first Halloween Dance entitled, “Dance if you dare, Eyler will give you a scare!” The dance raised over 400 canned goods for needy families. Eyler students had a blast dancing to the scary music provided by D. J. Mr. Hoying. Thank you to all the parent volun-teer that helped make our dance a success.

THANKFUL TREE

The four year old preschool class has been talking about Thanksgiving. We talked about how Thanksgiving is the time for us to be thankful for the

things we have in our lives. Mrs.

Nighswander, asked each child what they

were thankful for or glad to have and wrote their an-

swers on a leaf. We then stuck the leaves on a tree and created our Thankful Tree. Submitted by Mrs Nighswander, Preschool Teacher

HALLOWEEN FUN AT STERLING The Halloween Celebrations started at Sterling on a dark and spooky Tuesday night. Sterling families participated in games, trick-or –treated, and listened to scary stories in the Harvest Moon Reading Room, on October 29, 2013. PTO sponsored the activity. Sterling staff, dressed in there Halloween costumes, passed out candy and led the various fun activities.

On Thursday, October 31st Sterling Elementary was a “Spooktacular” place to be. During the morning, Envison Math was taking place along with learning centers, but during the after-noon, DJ Dave was spinning some hauntingly cool tunes while the students, staff, and parents enjoyed our annual Monster Mash Dance. The staff and students enjoyed the Monster Mash dance instead of having classroom parties.

To end Red Ribbon Week all staff and students wore black and orange to say “Boo to Drugs.” The day was filled with laughter and good times shared by all along with a tasty snack.

DRUG AND BULLY AWARENESS AT STERLING On Friday, October 25th the students at Sterling held an assembly to talk about ways to stay away from drugs and alcohol and how not to be a bully. We had four wonderful high school students who spoke about how being involved in school and hanging with good friends is a great way to stay drug free. Joseph Able, Jenna Meyer, Jenna Gadille, John Chopson, Hannah Doederlein, and Rojet Marrow did an outstanding job and we are so proud of their accomplishments. What great role models for our Sterling students.

Mrs. Fiala’s class along Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Makowski’s class all did a small presentation about how not to do drugs and how to not be a bully. They all did a fantastic job! Our wonderful PTO purchased bookmarks for all the students about how to stay Drug and Bully Free. A big thank you to them! Submitted by Sterling Teacher Mrs. Duncan

THIRD GRADE CURRICULUM NIGHT On Thursday, October 24th Sterling third grade teachers held a curriculum night. The things discussed were Daily 5, Envision Math, standard based grading, and Collins writing. A BIG THANK YOU to the parents who took time out of their busy scheduled to attend.

Students in Mrs. Swion-toniowski's Kindergar-ten class at Ritter Ele-mentary created jack-o-lanterns from recycled milk jugs donated by their families. These jack-o-lanterns could be seen at Ritter’s trunk or treat night in the class-room display case. Students had to first paint the inside of the milk jugs orange. Then they had to paint the caps green. With Mrs. Hill's help, they were able to create and glue a face on their pumpkin. What a fun way to celebrate the season!

LET’S READ! Mrs. Dyl's class has been work-ing hard during the month of October reading and tracking their minutes read onto the online Book It Minute Tracker system. We set a class goal of 18,000 minutes. That was set by adding up 20 minutes per day, five days a week, by all 30 students in the class-room. The only way the kids could track their progress was if they actually read and had their reading slip signed by their parents for that night. The kids did FAN-TASTIC!! We didn't meet the goal, but as a class we read 10,925 minutes in the month of October. According to the Book it Program results, our class was rated in the TOP 1,000 Classes in the nation out of 269,000 classes tracking their progress. I am super proud of my Reading Warriors!

This month, we are working hard to meet our reading goal. Students are already tracking their progress. We also chal-lenged Mrs. Brown to read ALL DAY on National Reading Day Friday, Nov. 15. My class will set up a comfy area down by the main office and students will spend their day reading with her. We are also trying to read and track our minutes to have the opportunity for Jeff Kinney (the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books), come to our school in the Spring. We are hoping to read so much that we win the chance for his visit. Wish us luck!

Thank you parents for signing the reading log sheet when your child reads so it helps us to meet our goals! Enjoy a good book today! Submitted by: Mrs. Dyl's Second Grade Class

Shapes, shapes and more shapes! Students in Mrs. Swiontoniowski's class learned about several different shapes including circles, trapezoids, rhombus, squares, hexagons and rectangles. After learning the different characteristics of these shapes, students had a chance to make different shapes with their bodies. In this picture, students were creating a rectangle and they figured out that a rectangle has two long sides and two short sides. Two friends had to hold their legs close to their bodies to make the short sides while two other friends had to stretch out to make the long sides. Fun was had by all as we watched groups work together and discov-er how to turn their bodies into shapes.

FALL FUN FOR KINDERGARTEN CLASS

KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS AT RITTER CELEBRATE THE 50TH DAY OF SCHOOL The kindergarten students at Ritter Elementary School enjoyed celebrating the 50th day of school with a 1950’s theme for the entire day. Students were engaged in math centers like measuring pictures of things from the 1950’s such as (records, cars, root beer floats, juke boxes, and cars) using tootsie rolls. They drew a picture of what they look like now and what they think they will look like when they are 50 years old. The students enjoyed root beer floats and graphed how many of their classmates liked it and how many did not. The students had a sock hop dance in their classrooms to music of the 1950’s time era and were encouraged to dress up in 1950’s attire for the day. Students had a great time while learning about a time in the past.

A FEW NOTES WITH BAD WEATHER COMING… At any time during the school year, it may be necessary to cancel school or delay the start of school due to a variety of reasons: extremely bad weather, poor road conditions, mechanical failures, or other emergency situations. While this is rare, you and your child must be prepared. Being prepared begins with making sure your student has a safe place to go to if school is cancelled or de-layed. If there is a two-hour delay in the morning, there will be NO morning preschool and NO vocational education classes. All afternoon activities will still be held. A two-hour delay means the school buses will pick up students two hours after the usual pick up time, at the normal pick up point. This includes all Airport buses.

If unforeseen events occur during the school day it would be extremely rare to send students home early from school. The normal practice is to complete the school day, but your child must know what to do and where to go in case he or she is sent home early. We never want to send a child home if they do know whether or not they will be able to get inside their home. Cancellations of after school events, such as games, practices, concerts or other activities, are determined before dismissal. If school is cancelled, all athletic levels below varsity level are cancelled. Any varsity or junior varsity athletic contest that is scheduled on a snow day might be played. The final decision will be made by the school administration.

HOW TO FIND OUT IF SCHOOL IS DELAYED OR CANCELLED Airport Community Schools uses the Honeywell Instant Alert System to electronically contact families quickly and effectively. Instant Alert will be used to notify parents of school closings due to inclement weather or building problems. Parents can also be informed of everyday building activities or any schedule changes.

He received a full scholarship to play in the Big-10 for Indiana University. As a left tackle he has played on most of the Big Ten fields and North Texas, Navy, U Mass, and Virginia. He received two varsity letters playing Left Tackle and was Academic All-Big 10 in 2011 and 2012. On May 4, 2013 he graduated with honors from Indiana University School of Public Health with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and minor in Psychology. Charles in now attending Wake Forest University for an Accelerated Master Program in Business Management . He was married in August to Rebecca Fletcher from Bloomington, Indiana.

Last June, Airport graduate Tim Webster (Class of 1974) was named Superintendent of Schools for the Reed City Area Public Schools. Reed City, a Class B school district, is located about 60 miles north of Grand Rapids on US-131.

Tim grew up in South Rockwood. He lived next to Ritter Elementary where he attended grade school. His mother Ruth Webster, an English teacher at Airport High, still lives there today. Tim has many fond memories of growing up playing basketball behind Ritter school at “Ritter Arena”, as they so fondly called it, with all the neighborhood boys. “We loved that the baskets were only 8 ½ feet tall.”

In high school Tim loved athletics. He was the shortstop on the 1972 State Championship Baseball Team and was the point guard of an undefeated JV basketball team (1971-72) and Huron League Basketball Champions (1972-73 & 1973-74).

Tim left his mark at Airport on Homecoming night in 1974 when he nailed up an “Airport Road” street sign on the telephone pole at the south school entrance off Grafton road. Tim said he smiles every time he comes home and sees that sign is still there.

After high school Tim attended Central Michigan University and graduated with a BS Degree in Industrial Arts. He took his first teaching job in 1978 in Baldwin, 20 miles east of Reed City, where he taught and coached for 17 years. Tim took his first adminis-trative job in Walkerville, a very small district southwest of Baldwin, where he served two years as the 5th thru 12th grade principal. Then, in 1997, Tim moved to Reed City where he was the Middle School Principal for 15 years prior to his most recent promotion to Superintendent of Schools.

Tim named Al Potratz as a great influence on him while in high school. Al was his basketball coach and taught industrial arts. Both areas Tim pursued for his own career tracks. Tim had a wonderful time attending the October 18 football game and the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on October 19, 2013.

EYLER PTO Fall is in the air and with that brought many PTO activities for our Eyler fami-lies to participate in. On Thursday, October 24th the PTO hosted the annual “Eyler Trunk or Treat”. Students and their families were invited to come to school in their costumes and participate in trick or treating and games. Donuts and milk were provided by the PTO and many of the teachers organized games and activities for the students. We had a great turnout and everyone had a fun night. Thank you to all of the Eyler teachers and parents who donated candy and volunteered to help. Also thanks to Ms. Green and the math department for their help in organizing all of the games and activities for the night.

The PTO also held its first book fair of the school year. Hopefully all parents had an opportunity to stop by the book fair during Parent Teacher Conferences. We will be in need of parent volunteers in order to continue having book fairs throughout the year. Please try to attend a PTO meeting if you are interested in helping with this very worthwhile activi-ty for the students.

On Friday, December 6th and Friday, January 24th the PTO will be hosting its Family Movie Night. This is a great event to bring the whole family to. The students will vote on which movie will be shown. Movie Nights are just $5 per family and there is a concession stand for snacks. We are hoping to see many of the students and their families at this event.

This December the PTO will once again be having the Santa’s Workshop. Santa’s Workshop will be held the week of December 9th. We will be looking for many volunteers to help make this a success.

Please make sure to go through your child’s Friday folder every week. The PTO is always looking for volunteers to help in the many activities we do for the students. We encourage you to come to the PTO meetings. They are held the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30PM. Future Meetings: Dec. 10, Jan. 14, and Feb. 11 at 6:30PM Submitted by: Michelle McCoy, Secre-tary

RITTER PTO Ritter PTO has been keeping busy with events and fundraisers this year! We had a successful Dance-a-thon held on Oct 31st during school. The Dance-a-thon was a Halloween themed dance and the students were able to seek pledges from family and friends to dance for 30 minutes during their ‘specials’ class. The PTO provided snacks, drinks, and spooky decorations. Ritter dad Jeremy Jondro volunteered his time and was an awesome DJ for this event. The students had a blast and raised over $2,000 for our PTO to purchase new 100% recycled plastic picnic tables for our new pavilion! Thank you to all the Ritter families who participated, and to the par-ents that helped work the dance. The event was a huge success because of YOU!

The Ritter students paid it forward by donating part of their Halloween candy to our soldiers stationed over seas. These brave men and women greatly appreciate knowing we are still thinking about them and appreciate their service.

We have also been participating in many fundraisers; our annual cookie dough fundraiser is taking place just in time for the holidays. The PTO has also been host-ing a monthly family restaurant night fundraiser at Applebee’s in Monroe. When you dine in on the specified night and show your flier Ritter will receive 20% back. The next Applebee’s night will be December 10th. We also are hosting a fundraiser at Five Below in Woodhaven, on December 7th-9th, you must show the flier that will be sent home and Ritter will receive a percentage back.

Ritter is getting ready for this upcoming

STERLING PTO Hello to all! Hope this finds you all happy and in good health. Since we last talked Ster-ling had their first Trunk or Treat…HUGE success!! Thank you to all who donated candy and helped with set up. A BIG thank you to the wonderful staff we have that came out after hours to spend more time with the kids. The children were thrilled to find their school dark and spooky. However, the real treat was to see their teachers and the staff in costume!! Another Thank you, to Stacy Nunn for making this event happen.

Please plan on dinner out at ANSON’s (if you have not been there, please give it a try) on Wednesday December, 11th. They are located on Exeter road (the old “Red Horse Inn”). A percentage of sales that day will go to Sterling PTO. Thank you in advance for your support.

PTO is working hard on a new project. Homemade Christmas!! All students will get to make a craft in class to take home as a gift. They are super cute and mostly from recycled items. Thank you to Suzette Laming and Linda Ward for taking on this large project. Christmas break will be here soon and PTO hopes you all take the time to truly enjoy the extra time with your families and friends, pull out some old games or make a craft (stores make them super easy by selling them in kits). holiday season! Santa Secret Shop will be opening Dec 9th-13th, the students will be able to shop and bag their gifts they buy for their family members. Each item is $2 and the profit the PTO makes from Santa Secret Shop goes back to help Ritter families during the holiday season. The shop is set up on the stage and is decorated for Christmas! We are also sponsoring a Polar Express Day on Fri-day Dec 20th! This day will consist of educational activities, crafts, cookie deco-rating, Christmas Carols and a Story. The day will end with the students watching the movie Polar Express in their PJ’s!

We are always looking for parent in-volvement at the school! We have weekly events taking place such as our school store, which is open every Wednesday during lunch. Students are able to pur-chase school supplies that cost from 10 cents to $1. Thank you to our school store lead Jody Falkey! We also make popcorn every Friday for ‘Popcorn Fridays’, the students can purchase a bag for 25 cents. We need library helpers on Thursday and Friday mornings. Please contact the office if you are available to help out.

As always keep collecting your Box Tops and Labels for Education! We have a monthly Box Top contest between the classrooms. The class with the most Box Tops will win a popsicle party and be able to hang our Box Top traveling trophy outside of their room.
