HIGHLIGHTSHong Kong hosted the 3rd annual Asia-Pacific International Schools Conference (AISC) on 14th and 15th December 2017. It was organised alongside Learning & Teaching Expo, in partnership with the English Schools Foundation (ESF) and supported by COBIS.

AISC is an international schools conference for educators at international schools in Hong Kong, China and the Asia-Pacific Region. Half of the AISC delegates and speakers attended from international schools outside Hong Kong. 75% of AISC 2017 delegates were newcomers.

The conference speakers and delegates shared their innovative learning ideas and the challenges they are addressing in their international school environments. Under the three major themes: “Mental Health & Wellbeing”, “Early Years Pedagogy” and “Transforming Learning”, the speakers addressed topical and important learning issues. The two day conference was full of inspiration, thoughtful contemplation and joyful comradery.

Overall delegates found the conference valuable and relevant to their own experiences and enjoyed the depth and breadth of AISC topics. The conference provided less time sitting in large plenary halls and more time building peer-to-peer communities through workshops, case studies and networking, plus exploring the latest innovation trends and technologies at Learning & Teaching Expo.

2018 THEMESInnovation in education

The Science of Learning

The business of education

Inclusive education

The Unconference Stream

We see innovation and disruption in every sphere of our lives, whether it is because of new technology or simply new ideas,

our world is changing and so are our schools. Schools are open to adaptive learning structures which allow students to control

their own learning journey (student agency) whist learning and collaborating with their classmates. Artificial Intelligence in its many

forms is beginning to enter into education with often surprising applications and results. This stream will explore some of these

innovations in educations and provide educators with practical ideas that can be used to improve learning outcomes in the classroom right

away.

Our understanding of the human brain, how it works and how we process new information is getting better all the time. Neuroscientists continue to advance our understanding of the brain and its impact on behavior and cognitive functions which in turn impact our ability to learn and master new tasks. In this stream we will look at the science of the brain and translate this into practical learning situations where small changes can often result in big improvements in learning and knowledge retention. – Learning is a skill that everyone can master and with our brain’s remarkable ability to gain new skills we can open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Planning and building a new school in any part of the world is challenging, but in Asia we see a growing demand for international schools that offer

alternative education. Where are the potential investors? Who are the suppliers and regulators? And what are the best practices to those planning

a new project. In this stream we will explore market data and analyse where the best opportunities lie, we will include legal and regulatory aspects, student

acquisition and school fee structures. Curriculum, campus design and pedagogical positioning, teacher recruitment and case studies from experienced educationalists

who have opened successful new schools.

Inclusive education is supported by the United Nations as a matter of human rights and social justice. The IB Curriculum defines Inclusion as an ongoing process that aims to increase access and engagement in learning for all students by identifying and removing barriers but how are schools and teachers implementing this? This stream will explore the very best thinking on how to achieve total inclusion in the classroom with powerful keynote speakers and deep-dive workshops to help educators really make a difference.

Every conference-goer has experienced the feeling that they would like to see more of what interests them and make better use of their time at the event.

We see the rise of more choice and greater personalisation everywhere, from Netflix when we are at home to personalised learning when in the classroom.

So we have decided to adopt the same approach for our final stream at AISC 2018. We will be drawing on the the best abstracts from our call for papers to give

potential delegates more of what they want to see and hear at AISC 2018.
