A third question about sacrificing one life to save another involved an electrician who was fixing
power lines in a building when suddenly he felt a strong electric shock.
The only way he could save himself from death by electrocution was to shut off the main power
switch for the building. However the building also housed an elderly invalid, attached to life
support machine. If power went out in the building, the elderly man would die.
Is he allowed to save his life at the expense of the poor invalid’s life? (Unlike the previous cases,
the invalid is not considered a rodeif, which might justify killing him to save one’s own life.)

To the Members & Friends of the ATCS
The kiddush, wonderful wishes & brachot that I received from everyone both at the kiddush
(which was an enormous surprise to me!), throughout the week-end and in writing were truly
overwhelming. Be it in text, email, Facebook or in person- your blessings and kind wishes all
touched me deeply.
While I am amazed that everyone in Shul was able to keep a secret, I was truly touched by the
sheer number of people who participated in sponsoring, setting it up and organizing the kiddush.
I am accustomed to being on the giving side of honours, glad to be a sponsor whenever anyone
in our community asks and always glad to help our community celebrate. I am less accustomed
to having it done for me and the entire experience was unquestionably overwhelming, very
moving and to be honest, hard for me to get through without crying.
I want to thank each of you for the kindness you showed me this past Shabbat, you all are truly
family to me and I am so proud to be a part of such a very caring and special community of
people.
You made this occasion very, very special to me. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart,

This week we continue our new feature in the bulletin with another instalment of PROFILES
Each week, we profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive manner to help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we spotlight Stuart and Michele Haber.
TCS: Let me begin by thanking you both for taking the time from your busy schedules to allow me into your oval office and conduct this interview. How long have you been affiliated with AISH and the TCS?
Michele: We connected within the first year of our marriage 22 years ago.
Stuart: Brian Singer was responsible for first introducing me to the Shul. The Bermans invited us for lunch that first Shabbat, we met the Frooms as well and we were hooked.
TCS: And now so many years later you are completing your first term as President about to embark on a 2nd term. Did you always strive to reach the office of the Presidency?
Stuart: I never aspired to be President. I do try however to use whatever skills the Almighty gave me to the best of my ability, and it so happened that I have the humbling experience to serve our amazing community in this position. I also grew up with many positive leadership role models as my Father, and both my paternal and maternal grandfathers were presidents of their shuls. My parents have insisted that each of us make a difference to our communities in whatever way we can.
TCS: Michele, are you thinking of a TCS Clinton plan where you succeed your hubby as president?
TCS Editor: Be very careful where you are going with these questions.
Michele: Not at all. I prefer to make my contributions behind-the-scenes.
TCS: Have the children been influenced by your dedication to the Shul and taking on the position of being president?
Michele: we have always tried to encourage our kids to take responsibility wherever they can, and it is nice to see that both RacheI and David have been presidents of their respective high schools and all of our children have learned that they need to roll up their sleeves and get involved in volunteering.
TCS: Does Stuart bring the TCS business home and are you consumed by Shul talk?
Michele: He is a good multi-tasker ☺
TCS: Best part of being President? Aside from the parking spot?
Stuart: I would say the best part is being able to make a difference and working with others to make a difference in the operation of the Shul as it meets its mission and vision. I don’t think that people realize how unique our Shul is. Nor do they realize how important it is to the Jewish families of Thornhill. We have to remind ourselves of that regularly
TCS: Most challenging aspect of the Presidency?
Stuart: the Shul is complex with a host of personalities and agendas. It is occasionally challenging to manage everyone’s concerns properly.
TCS: What do you hope to accomplish in your next term?
Stuart: the 1st area of focus remains the same: ensuring we are financially thriving rather than surviving. We have done well in this regard over the last 2 years, but we have to do more. Then creating a campaign to redo the Jerusalem hall. Also, building out a campaign to secure a Junior Rabbi. And fine-tuning the TCS protocols with regard to operations.
TCS: What can we look for to indicate success towards your goals?
Stuart: Success is having all the $ that we need to do what the Board and the membership wants to do. It is an unattainable objective that forces focus. Regarding membership for example, we should see a rolling 10% net increase yearly. We are doing well but I want us to do more.
TCS: What would you like to see from membership?
Stuart: Proactive involvement. In kiruv, volunteering, attending programs, and members earning a spot on the Board.
TCS: Switching gears, what is it like having twins?
Michele: It is amazing. Lots of fun.I truly feel blessed.
Stuart: (smiling) I thought that was because of me.
Michele: I am so glad that they will always have each other and it is amazing to see that they are each other’s best friend.
TCS: Favourite Shabbat class?
Stuart: Really? Obviously, you didn’t have time to prepare for this interview.
TCS: Sorry. I am just trying to get that awful singing from the Progressive Dinner out of my head.
TCS Editor: Don’t remind me. No amount of alcohol could make that sound good.
Stuart: I kind of like it. “Hey Stu” works much better than “Hey Jude” don’t you think?
TCS: So how did you meet?
Stuart: Blind double date. It was definitely beshert. I wasn’t even the first choice to go. We actually grew up almost on the same street…
TCS: Favourite type of vacation?
Michele: We actually like driving trips. Destinations: anything to do with a beach.
TCS: Something about you that even most of your friends don’t know.
Michele: Stuart is an introvert. He should play snooker professionally and can eat an entire box of his favourite cereal Cap’n Crunch in one sitting.
Stuart: Michele is really an aggressive political puppet master.
TCS: Stuart, how did you acquire such prodigious squash and tennis skills?
Stuart: I have played ping pong since I’ve been 7—everything comes from that
Michele: and before we got married I had to learn how to play too.
TCS: How did Stuart manage when he was left alone with David and Estie when you went to Florida recently?
Michele: He managed just fine…kids to school, laundry and lunches…all of it.
TCS: Any shout outs?
Michele: I would like to mention the chessed committee and everyone who cooks week in/week out. This committee has been operation for more than 20 years, even before there was email. I remember calling more than 20 ladies each week—and everyone contributing with a smile. The ladies who cook and undertake this responsibility, every time they are asked, are unbelievable. To me, this is one of the most incredible and unique aspects of our shul, of our community.
TCS: So Stuart is actually available this week to take care of his Presidential duties so we can dispense with the usual need to find a fill in.
Michele: But I want to be president for the week. Starbucks at Kiddish?
