data management systemInnovative and affordable data solution

ADMS (Ajenti™ data management system) is an innovative, simple, cost effective water management solution developed by Entura and an alternative to highly complex SCADA systems. The power of the ADMS is its ability to collect and present vast quantities of data in a fast, reliable, secure and meaningful way.

The ADMS captures data in the field and transmits it automatically to a central database linked to a web server that presents the data via an interactive internet interface, enabling clients to understand and utilise their data.

Entura has provided integrated telemetry solutions for the past 50 years, managing Hydro Tasmania’s extensive water management network.

We draw on this experience to establish effective monitoring networks that provide information in a user-friendly and affordable format for our clients.

Monitor remotely without travel With the ADMS you will have the convenience of:

• total flexibility - the data logging and upload intervals are programmable

• interactive web page for displaying, data analysis and reporting via ADMS.

User friendlyThe ADMS provides data parameters in a timely and user-friendly manner. It is easily maintained and managed, with on-site training to enable personnel to take ownership and feel comfortable working with the system.

Site configuration optionsMobile network (stand-alone) Most common configuration where GSM/3G or 4G cell coverage is available and only one site in the area requires monitoring:

• utilises a private wireless gateway hosted by Telstra (internet) back to Ajenti™ database

• very flexible solution, cheap operational costs, easy to set up and maintain, and completely independent of critical site SCADA networks

• a stand-alone mobile network may be configured outside cell coverage by replacing the cell modem with a satellite modem, making it very adaptable.

Mobile hub networkCommon configuration where GSM/3G or 4G cell coverage is available:

• utilises a private wireless gateway hosted by Telstra (internet) back to Ajenti™ database and local radio network (intranet) for picking up surrounding sites

• very flexible solution, cheap operational costs, easy to set up and maintain, and completely independent of critical site SCADA networks.

Satellite hub networkUsed for remote telemetry in regions not in radio or cell coverage:

• utilises static IP over satellite network (internet) back to Ajenti™ database and local radio network (intranet) for picking up surrounding sites.

SCADA hub networkUsed conventionally for real-time telemetry:

• typically utilises Modbus or DNP3 communications between hub radio and site RTU and local radio network (intranet) for picking up surrounding sites

• cell modem can be added and work in a hybrid configuration, delivering real-time data via RTU and near real-time data to Ajenti™ database.

Role Connections Comments

Data monitoring

ATU (Ajenti™ telemetry unit)

To collect and transmit data via GSM and 3GSM/ UMTS communications, allowing it to communicate on a varietyof mobile phone networks, including Telstra’s Next G network

• Ajenti™ configuration database

• SNTP server (to update time)

• Uses HSDPA, GPRS data transmissions

• Network can be expanded with ethernet, dial-up modem or radio connections

Telemetry and licence data import

Telemetry data receiver

• To connect to commercial communicaton suppliers’ mobile subnet (e.g. Telstra, Optus, etc.)

• To collect data sent from ATUs• To import water licence

information from an external source

• To deliver data to the times series database

ADMS database, WISKI, Hydsys or other time series database

• In the future, the FTP server will have provision for SSL3/TLS sockets

• Licence import services will be developed to cater for multiple import types

Data management and processing

Time series store WISKI/Hydsys/ HydroTel/ Proprietary Database

• To archive all data received from ATUs

• Provide the engineering units, alarms and quality procedures to be applied to the data

• FTP server to import data

• Application/web server

• Once data is stored, TSM can supply many other display and reporting features

• Modelling can also be used to produce irrigation district-specific results

Configuration and system management

ADMS database

To store ATU configuration information, user, tracking and maintenance information

• Application/web server• TCP connection service

ATU management and non-critical control

TCP connection service

To monitor, manage and control the ATUs

•ADMSdatabase•ATUs

Data distribution

Application/web server

• To provide individual (or organisational) data on the web

• To provide a data replication web service to external systems – specifically time series data into external time series stores

• Time studio/WISKI for import of data

• User accounts database• Other time series

database e.g. Hydsys, HydroTel, WISKI, proprietary systems

• Export data to other web-based systems

Data transferred to web for graphic and tabular display

Our experience

Project Client Client need We providedYarra Valley water meters, Victoria

Melbourne Water Corporation

MWC are responsible for the management of all surface water within their catchments. The Yarra Valley is an intensive agricultural area with numerous environmental considerations.

Utilising the Ajenti™ data management system(ADMS), Entura installed Ajenti™ telemetry devices at metered sites to store and retrieve water-use data. This data was then presented to MWC and to individual property owners via the ADMS interactive internet sites.

Westons Pumps, monitoring of SCADA, Tasmania

Hydro Tasmania

A remote site with a standalone SCADA PLC controlling a pump. This pump extracts excess water from the Weston’s weir for use in power production. The remote location is impacted by severe storms that often cause failure of the 240Volt network.

An Ajenti™ telemetry device was installed to monitor the alarm states on the PLC. These alarm states can be provided as time series to the ADMS and a SMS and/or Email message can be sent to nominated field staff for resolution. The ADMS also has a dashboard available to provide a total picture of the status of the weir level, the pumps and the alarms.

King Island smart grid, Tasmania

Hydro Tasmania

The King Island smart grid project is aiming to increase renewable energy penetration from 35% to 65% annually, and to achieve operation without diesel generation for sustained periods of time. This will bring significant diesel fuel savings and up to 95% reduction in green house gas emissions.

Entura was responsible for delivering the overall project and island-wide communications network, including installation and commissioning. We were responsible for designing the smart grid concept and delivering detailed design, selecting and testing appropriate equipment, commissioning of smart grid control segment and integrating it into existing control systems.

Olympic Dam water management

Confidential Entura was invited to provide the client with a saline water management solution that could monitor and report on increasing demands of saline water used on various projects around the mine.

The client is successfully meeting water allocation targets and have seen a rapid reduction in wasted water .The introduction of the ADMS has resulted in non-critical services being removed from the SCADA network, reducing costs and freeing up bandwidth for more real-time, site critical information.
