We know just how much you depend on your wheelchair. Both powered and manual chairs are a vital key to independence for thousands of people, and at AJM we look after your wheels as if they were our own.

Whether your wheelchair is provided by the NHS or owned by you we would always recommend breakdown cover for people who use it away from the home. Otherwise, if the wheelchair breaks it will usually be your responsibility to get you and the chair back home before it can be fixed. If you are miles from home, or perhaps on holiday, this can be hugely difficult, and that’s why we have arranged this great value nationwide UK cover.

To arrange cover, you can call us on the number below or fill on the form on page 7. Once cover is approved you will receive full terms and conditions together with the dedicated Helpline Number which you will need if you break down. 0845 689 0354

A word on...

Batteries

4 | EXPERT HEALTHCARE ADVICE

- Never allow a battery to fully discharge- Always charge batteries after each use- Do not go out on a new route without fully charged batteries- Ensure batteries are charged at least once a week when not using your wheelchair

Read your Owner’s Manual - if you do not understand it in places, we will be pleased to help

Storage - if at all possible, keep your wheelchair in a dry place, with access for electricity for charging if it is a powered chair

Fully Charged - Always, always, always keep batteries fully charged

Number One Driver - show respect and consideration to pedestrians and road users. If you lack confidence, we can offer instruction and guidance sessions

Keep Off The Accelerator - Slow down before hazards or known danger spots, and treat all corners and kerbs as potentially able to cause an accident

Maintenance - for your own items, make sure that regular servicing is carried out to manufacturer guidance. For NHS wheelchairs, report all signs of wear and tear using the details provided with your wheelchair

Accessorise - it is worth exploring items to add comfort to your journeys, such as waterproofs, proper luggage carrying devices and so on.

A AssistJSome tips for newwheelchair users:

Page 5: AJM Insurance Flyer WCS v1.02...Tip Top Shape 6 | EXPERT HEALTHCARE ADVICE As you may expect, there are things you can do to ensure that your wheelchair or scooter stays in tip top

If it's all completely new to you!

Carry heavy loads in the centre of your vehicle to maintain stability

Take extra care when going around corners or sharp bends

If it has a lap belt – wear it at all times even for short journeys

Keep to the pavement as much as you possibly can

Check the manufacturer’s operator manual for advice on load limits

Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged with sufficient credit – in case of an emergency

Keep windscreens (canopy users) and mirrors clean for improved visibility.

Never hang carrier bags from the handle bars or tiller

Don’t overload it with too much shopping

Don’t drive too quickly when carrying lots of bags

If you need to use the road, try not to head out at busy times like rush hour.

Don’t drive around when it is dark with no headlights – make yourself seen

Never start an unfamiliar journey without a fully charged battery

Don’t drive too near to pedestrians, try to keep a safe distance

Do Don't

You should also make sure that your eyesight and reactions are suitable for a road user, similar to the requirements to hold a driving licence.

The Highway Code now has a section on powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters. We would strongly advise all those using these items on the road to be familiar with it’s content and advice. If you call us on 0845 689 0354, we will be pleased to send you a copy.

If you’re new to using a wheelchair or scooter on the road, or if you haven’t been out on the road for a while, we would always advise finding a safe and quiet spot to get some practise.

Tip Top Shape

6 | EXPERT HEALTHCARE ADVICE

As you may expect, there are things you can do to ensure that your wheelchair or scooter stays in tip top shape. Just like a car, it has moving parts, such as brakes and axles, which can deteriorate if not properly used and cared for.

The wear and tear that your wheelchair experiences will depend on your usage and many other factors such as your weight, the speed you like to travel and the type of ground you drive over.

NHS owned powered wheelchairs will be subject to per iodic prevent ive maintenance checks and if you purchase your own equipment, you should make sure that it too receives regular servicing and inspection. In between these checks, if you notice any deterioration in your equipment, or feel that your usage has changed and the wheelchair is struggling to cope, please call us and we will try and help.

There are a few little things

that you can do...

1. Create a regular routine for carrying out a simple safety inspection, and include critical items like brakes, lights, tyres and seatbelts. Also check all of these before a long trip or a holiday.

2.Remember to charge batteries, especially when not using the wheelchair for a long time

3. Check wiring and leads for signs of damage or wear

4. Check tyre pressures and tread wear

5. Protect the control panel and electrical parts from moisture

6. Always use in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
