An Act Relative to Medical Emergency Response Plans for Schools, Chapter 77 of the Acts of 2012, AKA “Michael’s Law”.

Under the law every school committee/charter school board of trustees must ensure that every school under its jurisdiction has written a MERP

School specific comprehensive plans were developed by the District Health Team and approved by the School Committee

Must be made available in each school:

• Administrative Office

• Nurse’s Office

• Athletic Trainer’s Office

MERP Protocol review for all staff YEARLY

Practice the response sequence to a medical emergency YEARLY

Evaluate and modify the plan as needed YEARLY

Update the plan in case of new construction or physical changes to the school campus

Staff member on scene will:◦ Call School Nurse to scene IMMEDIATELY using

school specific communication protocols AND call Main Office to notify Administrator.

Staff Member on scene will:

◦ Stay with injured person

◦ Initiate basic first aid

“First Aid is the immediate and temporary

care given to an injured or ill person”

Staff Member on scene will:

◦ Adhere to Universal (Standard) Precautions

“Standard Precautions are thorough hand-washing, gloving in the presence of body fluids, and proper disposal of contaminated wastes. Use of Standard Precautions removes the need to know which persons are infected with which germs in the school setting.”

Staff Member on scene will:

◦ Avoid moving the ill or injured person, if incident

is serious, unless there is more danger if left

there and initiate basic first aid

◦ Remove all but the individual needing assistance

from the area

◦ Do not leave Nurse unassisted

Do not discuss the situation with the public or release any information to the media. The superintendent or designee is responsible for all communication with the public and media.
