B. Service to the Students Body

o Help in the organization of the Geomatics Engineering Career Day since 2003. The Geomatics career day creates an environment for industry to promote themselves and to display opportunities that exist for Geomatics Engineers within their organizations. Career Day also assists students in making informed career decisions by exposing them to the broad range of employment opportunities that exist in the Geomatics industry. Career Day creates an excellent environment for networking, discussions, and interaction between students and employees.

o 2004 organizer of the Geomatics Engineering Booth in the UofC campus fair. Campus fair is an all-day event that encourages the community at large to come to the University of Calgary and learn about the great things we do.

o Mentoring Geomatics Engineering students during their internship program (2003/2004: 2 students, 2004/2005: 2 students, and 2005/2006: 1 student).

C. Graduate and Undergraduate Supervision

Dr. Habib joined the University of Calgary in September, 2002. Prior to this employment, he has been at The Ohio State University since July, 1996. During this time, he has completed the supervision five PhD students, five MSc. Students (thesis based), seven MSc. Students (course based), and three Post Doctoral Fellows. Currently, he is supervising seven graduate students (four PhD and three MSc.), three international PhD students, and one Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF). Among the applicant’s research team, a number of researchers won prestigious national and international awards (e.g., GEOIDE NCE Scholarship, ISPRS Best Paper Award, ASPRS Best Paper Award, Robert E. Altenhofen Memorial Scholarship Award, University of Calgary Silver Anniversary Graduate Fellowship, Dean’s Special Doctoral Scholarship, Space Imaging Award, and Leica Geosystems Internship).

During the past five years, the applicant's group has typically consisted of 6-8 graduate students, either at the Master or the PhD level, and one or two research associates. Usually three or four major projects were in progress at any time. Research meetings of the whole group are taking place on a weekly basis, where ongoing research projects are discussed and results are presented. Through these meetings, the team members get a wide exposure to diverse research projects in Geomatics and are stimulated to think conceptually and develop innovative ideas. In addition, the individual responsibilities in R&D work are clearly defined in these meetings.

Over the last nine years, the applicant has served on 26 MSc and PhD thesis examination committees and 24 PhD candidacy exam committees. Several of these have been in other departments in national and international academic institutes.
