"Michail Ulyanov" is the first oftwo new Aker Arctic DAS™ doubleacting shuttle tankers for theRussian Arctic offshore in thePechora Sea.

As a result of a unique collaborationinvolving an overseas designer and aRussian shipbuilder, the 70,000 dwtMikhail Ulyanov is owned by OAOSovcomflot and was delivered byOAO Admiralty Shipyards in early2010. The state of the art vessel, designed completely by Aker ArcticTechnology, will be plying one of theharshest of trades, shuttling oil fromthe Prirazlomnoye oil fielddevelopment in the Pechora Sea to aFloating Storage and Offloading(FSO) unit moored off Murmansk.

Sister ship Kirill Lavrov is alsoplanned to service an area which iscovered in ice during the entire winternavigation season. During hardwinter seasons temperatures can fall

as low as minus 40 C° and ice canform over 1.2 metres in thickness.

Hull structures for icestrengthening of the ships is inaccordance with Russian MaritimeRegister of Shipping ice category Arc6 , with the stern of the vesselstrengthened for bow design iceloads for double acting operation.

All equipment are designed to beexposed to ambient temperature ofminus 40ºC.

The underwater hull formincorporates an icebreaking bow foroperation ahead in young ice and thinfirst year ice conditions. The bowshape is derived from a compromiseof both ice operational performanceas well as open water sea-keepingand performance.

The propulsion solution comesfrom ABB Marine, in the shape oftwin Azipods®. The azimuthingthrusters enable the ships topenetrate cross ridged ice when

running astern with a continuous slowspeed, where conventional ships ramwhen running ahead. "MikhailUlyanov" and "Kirill Lavrov" are ableto achieve 3 knots speed astern infirst year level ice, 1.2 m thicknesswith 0.2 m of snow layer and 3 knotsspeed ahead in first year level ice,0.5 m thickness.

They will also need to shuttle atspeeds of up to 16 knots, withoccasional voyages to Atlanticdestinations.

The bridges have been outfittedwith state of the art equipment, supplied by Transas. The electronicswill include communicationequipment for GMDSS area A4, tworadars for extreme temperatures, twoECDIS 3000-I systems, sixinformation displays with Navi-Conning, Automatic IdentificationSystem, Voyage Data Recorder, log,and echosounder.
