Introduction to Lean

Lean tools and techniques focus on the elimination of waste from a process, improving its efficiency, reducing its cost and increasing the profitability of aspecific action.

This methodology aims to minimise the resources required to deliver a particularservice or product by focusing on providing what the customers want in the mostefficient and effective way.

Lean methodologies were originally developed in the manufacturing industryhowever over the past thirty years the tools have been successfully applied acrossall industries and sectors.

By adopting Lean principles a business will be capable of rapidly reacting tochanges in customer demand, greatly reducing lead times and significantlylowering the costs associated in delivering its products or services.

Introduction to Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a data-driven approach that uses statistical tools and techniques to reduce variation in a process.

This statistical approach focuses organisations on the measurement and analysisof their processes, allowing Key Performance Metrics to be applied and business units to be effectively managed through their performance against these metrics.

A Sigma value is a number assigned to a given process, identifying and quantifying the level of consistency and reliability to which that process performs.

The tools and techniques of Six Sigma identify the process steps causing variability, analyse their root causes and introduce improvements based on impact, all designed to bring the overall process under the organisations control.

Lean Six Sigma methodology

Through the collaboration of the two methodologies, organisations are able tooptimise the performance of the processes their business is based on, deliveringcustomer focused products and services in the most efficient and reliable means.

The DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) improvement cycle is thecore tool utilised in a Lean Six Sigma project, combining both elements to delivergreater results than their constituent parts could alone.
