special, a direct gift fromAllaah. And yet we often takeit for granted. We don’t prayon time, or we don’t pray atall. Why don’t we give ourSalaah the attention it deserves?We don’t realize how impor-tant it is. Allaah broughtProphet Muhammad (S.A.W)on a journey from Mecca toJerusalem and through theheavens to give him the gift ofSalaah. Allah chose to speakdirectly to the Prophet (S.A.W)about Salaah. In comparison,the whole Qur’aan was re-vealed to Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) through Angel

Gabriel here on earth. AndJibraeel had to stop and send theProphet (S.A.W) onward to meetAllaah directly; the Angel was notallowed to go that far. Not evenAngel Gabriel was between Allaahand the Prophet (S.A.W) whenhe received the gift of Salaah. Atfirst, Allaah commanded that weshould pray 50 times a day!That’s how important prayer is!Eventually the number was low-ered to 5 times a day with theblessings of 50 times. Whyaren’t we serious about ourSalaah? All the prophets prayedto Allaah. Even today, some Or-thodox Jews prostrate duringprayer, and many Christianskneel. But the format of our

prayer is unique. It is a com-bination of different positionsof prayer that the prophetspracticed with additionalmovements. After Imaan,Salaah is most important.Imaan is internal, not visible,but our Salaah is physicalevidence of our faith in God.Salaah is like the head of thehuman body, and withoutSalaah a man is a dead manwalking, or spiritually dead.The Prophet (S.A.W) saidthat missing just one prayeris like losing one’s entirefamily and possessions. Andon the day of judgment, thevery first question will beabout our Salaah. In Chap-ter 2 Verse 277of the HolyQur’aan, Allaah says:“Those who believe and dorighteous deeds, and estab-lish regular prayers and regu-lar charity, will have their re-ward with their Lord: onthem shall be no fear nor shallthey grieve.” Salaah shoulddefinitely be our priority! Weshould educate ourselves toensure we know everythingabout Salaah. The compan-ions asked the Prophet(S.A.W) why he spent somuch time in optional prayer.His feet were swollen fromstanding. He couldn’t pos-sibly have sins! The Prophet(S.A.W) explained, “ShouldI not at least thank Allaah forthe bounties He has given?”Many of us want to study thehighest levels of Islam with-out understanding the foun-dation which is Salaah.

In 1975 he went to India tostudy Islam and became the first student from the Caribbean and NorthAmerica to have enrolled in Darul Uloom Deoband, which is the largestand oldest Islamic Institute in India. In addition to graduating as a Qaariand Islamic Scholar, he also did a course in Journalism and established theAl Hikmat Muslim Magazine. He has also produced many television andradio programs in Trinidad and Florida USA. In 1983 he founded theNational Muslim Sports League of Trinidad and Tobago, which estab-lished the Islamic Home for Children. He is the Founder/Principal of DarulUloom Institute in Pembroke Pines and the first Muslim to become Presi-dent of the Interfaith Council of South Florida in the year 2002. He is thepioneer of many Christian / Muslim / Jewish Dialogues in Churches, Syna-gogues and Islamic Centers in the U.S.A. Shaikh Shafayat was the firstMuslim to represent Islam at a Florida State Faith Summit, held at theCapitol Building with Gov. Jeb Bush in the year 2000.He is a recipient ofthe Silver Medallion Award from NCCJ (a national interfaith organization)and a recipient of the Peacemaker Award from St. Thomas University inMiami. For many years he has been lecturing on Islam and terrorism tocollege and university students plus to Pembroke Pines Police of SouthFlorida and other Law Enforcement Officers. He lectures throughout theU.S.A. and worldwide on Interfaith Issues and Cultural Diversity.

I would like to offer my friends at DarulUloom and throughout the Muslim commu-nity a Ramadan Kareem. Ramadan is atime when Muslims are reminded of thefact that God is a generous God. Too of-ten in our world we forget that the joys wehave in life are blessings from God. Our

families, the friends that we have, our successes in life, ourhealth, the food that we eat—we take these blessings forgranted. The season of Ramadan reminds Muslims that noneof these blessings should be taken for granted. And Islam’sbeautiful rituals of prayer and fasting are a superb way ofremembering those blessings. By fasting during the day youdeprive yourselves of our basic instinct to eat. When youhave the opportunity to replenish you bodies in the eveningonce again you have the opportunity to be grateful to God forfood. And it is important during that evening meal to remem-ber the food as God’s blessings. Jewish tradition affirms thesame concepts. At every meal Jewish tradition teaches us tooffer a prayer of thanks before eating. But thanking Goddoes not end with the meal. It would be easy enough tothank God when we are hungry for the food we are about toeat, and once we have eaten, no longer feeling in need, wemight decide to forget that our nourishing meal was fromGod. As the laws previouslyrevealed had been corrupted Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was sentwith a mission to preach Islam and belief in him was estab-lished. The word of God was thus revealed through ProphetMuhammad (P.B.U.H) and the revelations are contained inthe book called the Qur‘an. Hadith or Traditions are the in-spired precepts of the Prophet (S.A.W) in matters of law andreligion. In other words the Qur’aan and the Sunnah are theprimary sources.

Assalamu alaikum: I stumbled across a touching narrativewhich served as a reminder to me towards my duties to Allah(SWT) and humanity. I would like to share it with you be-cause many times we often get caught up with our worldly“life schedule”. We are so consumed with taking care ofourselves and the needs of our family that we may not re-member to put aside time on a consistent basis to give toothers who are less fortunate and needy. Sometimes we onlygive charity at a certain time of the year (Ramadan, Eid ulAdha, or when there is a disaster and groups are reachingout to appeal for aid). While these are indeed important in-stances to give charity; we should be consistent in giving aid,being charitable and offering goodwill. The following storyentails doing good now, knowing that your kindness may helpsomeone at some time, somewhere. Story: We enter a littlecoffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. Whilewe’re approaching our table two people come in and they goto the counter: Five coffees, please, two of them for us and“three suspended’. They pay for their order, take the twoand leave. Forexample, haram things have been toldto us and then the rest is halaal. In theHoly Qur’aan, Allaah (SWT) admon-ished the Jews for making those thingsharam that were declared halaal byAllaah (SWT). Shaikh Ahmad Sarhindi(Mujaddid Alf Sani) has stated time andagain in his teachings that we must staysilent (don’t argue) about the areaswherein the Sharia is also silent and tokeep in mind that only that action/thing

is prohibited that which has been ex-pressly forbidden. In modern times,many people think (falsely) that what-ever is not mentioned in Sunnah(teachings of the Holy Prophet(SAW), is prohibited. Not only this isfalse, it is also very dangerous. Forone, we know there is no compulsionin Islam and it is fully supported bythe Holy Prophet (SAW) teachings,but it is being presented as hard anddifficult to follow. Second, this thoughtis escalating tensions among the manythus causing divisions among the Mus-lims. Third, and finally and most im-portantly, it is causing a diversion fromthe important principals of Islam forthe Muslim Ummah. Let’s keep inmind that in our lives, we performFard actions first and Sunnahs after.After Sunnahs, follow Mustahabb(recommended), Mubaah (neither for-bidden nor recommended) and thenMakrooh (disliked). Sur Masjid Ittefaaq-Ul-IslamI recently cameback fromSuriname, SouthAmerica and had awonderful experi-ence as usual. I en-joy visiting thecountry for threereasons: the 1st be-cause it is my pater-nal ancestral home-land and I get tovisit my family, thesecond reason is becausesuriname is 30% Muslim and hasover 100 masjids in the country(by my estimates more than anyother South American or Carib-bean Country), and the third rea-son is halaal food is everywherein the country. The populationof Suriname is very diverse withpeople of African descent andEast Indian decent being the ma-jority (around 80%), howeverthe rest of the population is ofNative Amerindian (various

tribes), Indonesian, Syrian, Brazil-ian, Chinese, Lebanese and a mixof all of the races. We even have alarge Guyanese population in thewestern part. The history of Islamin Suriname started in 1499 whenthe slaves ships arrived carryingthe men, women and children fromWest Africa.The majority of persons from WestAfrica at the time and currentlywere and are Muslim.

(OrPentecost) Shavuot means “weeks.” It marks the completion ofthe 7-week period between Passover and this feast of Shavuotand celebrates/commemorates/renews the giving of The Law (TheTorah) to Moses (Peace be upon him.) at Mt. Sinai. Some referto this feast as the uniting of God with the Jewish people in a HolyRelationship—New Beginning. Many of our Christian Churchesrecently celebrated their Feast of Pentecost. The Christian Feastof Pentecost occurs 7-weeks after Easter Sunday and it celebrates/commemorates/renews the descent of the Holy Spirit upon theApostles and other followers of Jesus (Peace be upon him) theChrist. (120 in all) For many Christians, this feast is referred toas the “Birthday of the Church”—New Beginning. As we look toJuly, many devout Muslims will be preparing for the most Sacredtime in their tradition, when they enter into that month of fastingand devout prayer—Ramadan. Vitamin D comesfrom food such as fatty fish and foods forti-fied with vitamin D as well as sunlight. Un-fortunately, many individuals are deficient asa result of a diet high in processed foods, lim-ited sun exposure, darker skin, obesity, anddrug interactions. Older adults are especiallyat risk for vitamin D deficiency, because asthey age skin cannot synthesize vitamin D ef-ficiently.

In 1863 slavery was abol-ished and the Dutch neededto find more laborers towork on the plantations forfree. So in 1873 the sec-ond group of Muslims thatarrived in Suriname was theEast Indian indentured ser-vants and Indonesian agri-cultural workers. The EastIndians were either Hinduor Muslim and were al-lowed to keep their names,practice their religious be-liefs, and also were allowedto continue to speak theirlanguages Hindi and Urdu.Suriname is the only countyin the Western Hemispherethat has hundreds of thou-sands of people speakingHindi and Urdu on a dailybasis outside of Asia. TheLebanese, and Syrians wereeither Muslim or Christianand the Indonesian’s weremajority Muslims and theyspoke and were allowed tocontinue to speak their na-tive language Malay. Wehave various types ofmasjids from small com-munity masjids to verylarge masjids. Every time Itravel to Suriname which isnormally several times ayear I bring with me a suit-case full of Islamic materi-als courtesy of Al-Hikmatand Sheikh ShafayatMohamed. He called his trustedgenerals and said, “I willdepart from this worldsoon and I have threewishes, please carry outthem out without fail.”With tears flowing downtheir cheeks, thegenerals agreed to abideby their king’s lastwishes. “My first desireis that”, said Alexander,“My physicians alonemust carry my coffin.”After a pause, hecontinued, “Secondly, Idesire that when mycoffin is being carried tothe grave, the pathleading to the graveyardbe strewn with gold,silver and preciousstones which I havecollected in mytreasury”. “My third andlast wish is that both my

Two girls ask for one coffee each,pay and go. The next order was forseven coffees and it was made bythree lawyers - three for them andfour ‘suspended’. While I still won-der what’s the deal with those ‘sus-pended’ coffees, I enjoy the sunnyweather and the beautiful view to-wards the square in front of the café.Suddenly a man dressed in shabbyclothes who looks like a beggarcomes in through the door and kindlyasks, “Do you have a suspended cof-fee?” It’s simple - people pay in ad-vance for a coffee meant for some-one who cannot afford a warm bev-erage. Others came in and paid for“suspended sandwiches” or a wholemeal.” In other words, these kindfolks, did not only buy food or drinksto satisfy their hunger, but also pre-paid for drinks and meals for thosewho may walk in homeless, hungryand needy. What isthe largest gathering in theMuslim world? Hajj. TheProphet (S.A.W) only com-bined Zuhr and Asr in Arafah,and Maghrib and Isha inMuzdalifah. Most of us aretravelers and don’t know howto pray when travelling. Weneed to know laws of wuduand Salaah when travelling.Salaah is the most unique andprecious gift to the Prophet(S.A.W) and to us, spirituallyand physically. It preventsfitna and corruption. It pro-tects us from evil and harm.Salaah gives us Barakah forour day. Muslims all over theworld commemorate the monthof Ramadan; the leader of allmonths; the month of forgive-ness, merits and gifts; the monththat gladdens the hearts of righ-teous people. Ramadan is themonth that contains the leader ofall nights; a night that is betterthan a thousand months. Who-ever spends the night in prayerswith faith and hoping for Allaah’sreward will have all his past sinsforgiven. The Prophet (S.A.W)“When the month of Ramadanenters, gates of Paradise areopened, gates of Hell are closedand devils are chained.” (Re-ported by Al-Bukhari and Mus-lim) Therefore, whoever wantseternal prosperity should en-deavor to worship Allaah and dogood deeds sincerely. For, gooddeeds without sincere intentionis of no use. It is a glory for abeliever to wake up in the nightand perform prayers, for the bestprayer after the obligatory onesare the prayers performed in thenight. One should endeavor tosupplicate to Allaah during thenights of this noble month be-cause, supplication is the linkbetween man and his Lord; it isan effortlessly clear profit andeasy booty; it prevents calami-ties and brings forth Allaah’s trea-sures and bounties. By supplicat-ing to Allaah during the night, Heanswers by granting the requestgenerously, for His Hands neverget tired of giving. The Qur’aanis Allaah’s message to His ser-vants and a light for mankind.

There is no way to Allaah’spleasure except through it. Itis revealed in the best of allmonths. The best way to spendone’s time during this monthis to recite the Qur’aan as fre-quently as possible. Read it, re-flect on its meaning and workby its injunctions. This is be-cause the Qur’aan contains ad-monitions and lessons that in-crease one’s humility andhumbleness.As regards charity,the Prophet S.A.W. was themost generous of all people andhis generosity manifested mostduring the month of Ramadan.Whenever he gave, he gavegenerously as if he had no fearof poverty. He would never beasked of anything except thathe gave it unless if he did nothave it. Charity, has its posi-tive effects on the giver. Itcauses blessings to his wealthand children, prevents calami-ties and brings forth bliss.Ramadhaan is a month of char-ity. One should spend from hiswealth for the poor and needyand be aware that stinginessdoes not protect one’s wealthforever. In fact charity in-creases one’s wealth. There-fore, one should spend in char-ity, for charity elevates one’srank in front of Allaah. Oneshould make proper preparationfor this honorable month, be-cause it is a special guest. Re-ceive it with sincere repentanceand spend time during themonth in acts of obedience toAllaah.
