News Letter of Hussaini association of Calgary, Canada Al Al Al - - - HuJjat (ATFs) HuJjat (ATFs) HuJjat (ATFs) We have a firm belief that one day our Living Imam will reappear by Divine command, and waiting and preparing for his arrival is one of the main duties of a Shia Muslims today. We should therefore try to obtain the ability and merit of being his special companions when he reappears. One who is waiting and preparing himself for the reappearance of the Imam must have the characters and merits of the companions of Imam Mahdi (atfs), and should be able to sacrifice his life and wealth in his way. For this reason, Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s) has said: "One who waits for our commands is like a person who sacrifices his own blood in the way of Allah." Yes, he who is really ready for the Imam becomes like a martyr in the way of Allah. In another tradition, Imam as-Sadiq narrated the virtues of the companions of Imam Mahdi: "If one takes pleasure in being among the companions of al-Qaim, he must wait for him and must act with good behavior and modesty. If he dies before the appearance of al-Qaim, he will be rewarded like one who has followed him. Then act diligently, and wait, that this effort and waiting will give you delight, O you who have found salvation. "We should always try to perfect ourselves in our morals and ethics, and guide our friends and relatives. We must not forget to advocate good deeds (Amr Bil Ma'ruf) and advocate against sinful practices (Nahi Anil Munkar), as these are the fabric of any Muslim society. In conclusion, we come to the realization that we have a living Imam who needs support, who loves us sincerely, and who still considers us all as his followers even though we are far from being anything like Hurr was for Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). We should be very thankful to Allah if some of the known virtues of the companions of the Imam Mahdi (atfs) are found in us, and we should pray for their betterment and improvement daily. If these characteristics are not found in us, we should supplicate to Allah (swt) that He adorns us with these attributes and that our acts and conduct will also represent the truth of our claims. In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

Salaam-un-Alykum, I thank Allah (swt) for his blessings upon us all and for the safe return of our youth who were on The Al-Asr Summer camp to visit the sacred shrines (ziaraat). We hope Insha’Allah more youth will be visiting next year to enrich their soul and mind by taking such trips. The 'Spreading of the Earth' Day It is the day when the earth was spread for the advantage of human beings. The phrase ''Dahwul Ardh'' literally means ''The spread of the earth''. On this day Allah (swt) spread out ALL the land on the Earth under the Ka`bah. In another tradition it is reported that the first Rahmah & blessing descended on this very day. It is also reported on the authority of Imam Ali Reza (a.s). that tonight the two distinguished Prophets i.e : Prophet Ibrahim (a.s) and Prophet Issa (a.s) were born. ''Dahwul Ardh'' - the 25th of Dhil Qa'dah, according to a tradition of the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W reported by one of his Sahabi - 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud , is the day when the earth was spread for the advantage of human beings. The phrase ''Dahwul Ardh'' literally means ''The spread of the earth''. In another tradition it is reported that the first Rahmah & blessing descended on this very day. Hence it is a very important occasion indeed. According to a tradition of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), whosoever fasts on this day his fast would equal 70 years of fasting. Having known these merits, should we limit our celebration with fasting and the expression of joy, or should our struggle transcend beyond that? This obviously would depend on our vision about this important day. And in order to understand properly the importance of this day, we should understand the earth better. Understanding the Earth Better We would like to now ask the Holy Qur'an two basic questions about the earth: A. WHY WAS THE EARTH CREATED? The Holy Qur'an in chapter 20, verse 53 says:' 'He who appointed the earth to be a cradle for you.'' Allamah Tabataba'i in his Al-Mizan says:''Thus Allah (swt) stationed man in the earth to live an earthly life, so that he may earn a provision for his heavenly and exalted life, in the manner that a baby is stationed in the cradle, and is brought up for a more sacred and developed life...'' (vol. 14, pg. 171) From this we come to realize that the earth was created as a preparing ground & means for human perfection and the purity of the heart. Sadly, however, many a people, instead of maintaining it for a good Hereafter, tend to destroy it for selfish gains. B. DO THE HUMAN BEINGS EMPLOY THE EARTH FOR THE PURPOSE IT WAS CREATED? The Holy Qur'an in chapter 30, verse 41 clearly talks of a people who instead of practically thanking Allah (swt) by utilizing the earth for its sacred purpose cause mischief therein and subsequently face its evil consequences: ''Corruption has appeared in the land and sea, for that men's own hands have earned, that He may let them taste some of that which they have done, that haply so they may return.'' And in chapter 7, verse 10, Almighty Allah says:' 'Indeed We made you live in the earth and made therein for you the means of livelihood; little is it that you thank.'' In this verse, ''little is it that you thank'' should not merely taken as ''verbal thanks,'' for the reality of "shukr" is to use the gift for the purpose it was created.

It is narrated from the Prophet (pbuh) that it is recommended to pray this prayer on Sunday in the month of Dhil Qa'da with a great reward. That whoever prays it, his sins will be forgiven and his repentance will be accepted and Allah (swt) will make his liabilities to others cleared and when he dies he will die with faith (Iman). And his religion will be intact. His grave will be widened and enlightened, his parents will be pleased with him and Allah (swt) will forgive his parents and children and will give him more wealth. And the Angel of Death will be gentle with him when taking his soul. And many other great benefits for this special prayer. Reference to this salaat: Mafateeh Al Jinan by Shiekh Abbas Qummi (page 247), A'maal the month of Dhil Qa'da It is recommended to do Ghusl /Wudhoo & pray a 4 Rakat Salaat on any Sunday in Dhil Qa’da. In every Rakat: Sura Al-Hamd (Once)/Sura Naas (Once)/Sura Falaq (Once)& Sura Ikhlas(3times) After Salaam Say 70 times;

“Astaghfirullah Wa atubu Ilaihi” then Say, la hawla wala quwwata illa billah aliyil azeem and

Imam Reza (a.s) , the eighth Shi'ite Imam was born on Thursday 11th Dhil Qa'dah148 A.H. /29 December 765 A.D. in Medina. The new-born child was named Ali by his holy father, Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s) the seventh Imam. He was divinely entitled al-Reza and his nickname was Abul Hasan. For many times Imam Musa Al-Kazem (a.s) explicitly introduced his eldest son "Ali" as his immediate successor to accede to the divine position of Imamat. Subsequent to the martyrdom of his father in Baghdad, on the 25th of Rajab 183 A.H. / 1 September, 799 A. D. in the prison of Abbasid caliph, Harun al_rashid, he attained the holy position of Imamat, when he was thirty five years old, and he held that divine position for twenty years. Three Abbasid caliphs were his contemporaries: for the first ten years Harun al- Rashid, for next five years Amin and finally for the last five years Ma'mun. Why Ma'mun invited Eman Reza (a.s) After the death of Harun (b, 766 A.D., r. 786-809 A.D.) in 193 A.H./ 809 A.D., Ma'mun fell into conflict with his brother Amin (b 787 A.D., r. 809-813 A.D.), which led to bloody wars and finally the assassination of Amin in 813 A.D./ 198 A.H., after which Ma'mun became caliph. The Umayyad and the Abbasid caliphs were afraid of the Holy Imams (a.s) who were publicly recognized as the true and worthy successors of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). The Holy Imams (a.s) were therefore constantly persecuted and tortured by the ruling caliphs of the time. Ma'mun thought of finding a new solution for these difficulties which his Abbasid predecessors had not been able to solve. Ma'mun contrived to invite Imam Reza (a.s) to Marw, (the city where Ma'mun's seat of caliphate was located) with the evil intention of making false friendship with His Holiness. Thus the cruel Caliph intended to have a direct eye on His Holiness. In order to have this decision put into effect, Ma'mun forcefully exiled Imam Reza (a.s) from Medina to Marw. On his departure from Medina, Imam Reza (a.s) gathered the members of his family and enjoined them to shed tears for his last jouney with no return. Holy Imam (a.s) did not take any member of his household with him to Marw. His Holiness intended to make the people aware of the exile that Ma'mun had intended for him. Towards Khorasan According to Ma'muns' commands the direction of Imam Reza (a.s) caravan from Medina to Marw was predetermined. He arrived in Marw on the 10th of Shawwal in 201 A.H. / 1 May 817 A.D., via Basrah, Khorramshahr, Ahwaz, Rey, Neyshabur, Sanabad and Sarakhs. Throughout his long journey, the Holy Imam (a.s) was cordially received by the people living in those cities and villages on the route. When His Holiness arrived in Neyshabur he narrated a Hadith Qudsi before an estimated crowd of 120,000 which also included thousands of distinguished scholars and traditionists. This historical and the most famous Hadith Qudsi in known as "Silsilat al-Dhahab". Imam Reza (a.s) confirmed that worshipping God will be counted as a perfect procedure when it is based on the obedience of the Immaculate Holy Imams (a.s) . This historical statement of Imam Reza (A.S.) implied the presentation and assertion of the Imamat (Socio- religious leadership) of His Holiness. Imam-e- Zaamin(A.S.) The 8th Imam, Imam Ali ibne Musa ar-Reza (a.s) is also called as Imam-e-Zaamin((a.s) .When Muslims go on journeys they take with them something called Imam-e-Zaamin (another name for Imam Reza (a.s) which is some money tied in a cloth. This tradition probably came from the time of Imam Reza ((a.s) when people used to carry money with them especially because it had Holy Imam's (a.s) name on it. As Ma'mun, the Abbasid caliph the contemporary of Imam Reza (a.s) had coins minted with the name of Imam Reza (a.s) on them, it was very easy for the Muslims to carry the name of Holy Imam (a.s) with them, especially when they went on journeys. Imam Reza (a.s) is also known as Imam-e- Zaamin (a.s) Zaamin means "The Guarantor". One day when Imam Reza (a.s) was on his historical journey from Madina to Marw(Khurasan),while in a jungle the Holy Imam (a.s) came across a hunter who was about to kill a deer. The deer was trying to get away and when she saw Holy Imam (A.S.), she said something to him.Holy Imam (a.s) asked the hunter to free the deer so that she could go and feed her little baby deer who were very hungry. Imam Reza (a.s) also told the hunter that once the deer had fed her babies she would come back. The hunter allowed the deer to go because Holy Imam (a.s) had told him to, but he did not think the deer will come back. But Imam Reza (a.s) waited with the hunter until the deer returned with her young ones. The hunter was amazed on witnessing this miraculous event and he set the deer free as a mark of respect for Imam Reza(a.s) After this historical event Imam Reza( (a.s) became famous as Imam Zaamin (a.s) The most famous artist of the contemporary world, Ustad Mahmud Farshchiyan has depicted this historical event in this beautiful masterpiece iconograph entitled "Zaamin-e-Aahu"(The Guarantor of the Deer). Successorship to Caliphate His Holiness was welcomed at Marw by the caliph himself and by Fazl ibn Sahl and some distinguished Abbasid nobles in a place a few leagues outside the metropolis. After some days, Ma'mun offered Imam Reza (a.s) first the caliphate, His Holiness seriously rejected Ma'mun's proposal. Then Ma'mun proposed Imam to accept the successorship to caliphate, the Holy Imam (a.s) turned down this proposal also but he was finally forced to accept the successorship to caliphate. The Holy Imam (a.s) put forward certain conditions that he would not interfere in governmental affairs or in the appointment or dismissal of government agents. Ritual of Fitr Prayer In the late Ramadan 202 A.H., Ma'mun requested Imam Reza (a.s) to conduct the religious service of the celebration of "Fitr Prayers" (Festival at the end of the month of Ramadan) in Marw. The Holy Imam (a.s) accepted only with the condition to perform the related ritual just on the basis of the method of the Holy Prophet of Islam (pbuh) Early in the morning of the celebration day of "Fitr", Holy Imam (a.s) appeared in plain clothing and bare-footed before that congregation and glorified God loudly; saying "Allah Akbar" (God in the Greatest of all.). From every direction of the city the call "Allah Akbar" could be heard because the congregation present there followed His Holiness and shouted "Allah Akbar". Ma'mun was deeply alarmed by the magnificence and splendour of that demonstration and requested Holy Imam (a.s) to cease the continuation of that ritual. The Holy Imam's (a.s) Scholarly Discourses Ma'mun often managed sessions of debates to be held in his own royal palace and celebrated scholars of various religions were invited there to exchange and discuss their different views on religious issues,Imam Reza (a.s) was always victorious in all those debates and soon his opponents recognized the scientific status of His Holiness. Imam Reza (a.s) directed Muslims to the right path and removed deviated views of the antagonists who endeavoured to distort Islam. In this way the Holy Imam (a.s) safeguarded and propagated the principles of Islam.

Every human being comes to this world pure and sound in mind and soul. Stinginess, envy, hypocrisy, transgression and debauchery are not natural states of man, they are acquired, coming to man because of a series of educational and social factors or because of the effects of friendships or the like. The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Everyone is born with (human) nature, but his parents either make him Jewish or Christian (change his natural beliefs).”

A teacher, a friend or a deviant society has a great effect on making one deviant. Because of these effects, one may get involved in intellectual mistakes, vices and bad deeds. These mistakes and sins are a series of diseases, but there is a cure. The Holy Qur'an confirms this, and it declares that there is a way of recovery from these diseases and states of tension that result from latent dregs in the unconscious.

The Holy Qur'an is the prescribed effective cure of human vices as it states: “O men, there has come to you indeed an admonition from your Lord and a healing for what is in the breasts, and it is a guidance and a mercy for the believers.” (10:57). According to the Holy Qur'an, these diseases require the Divine forgiveness and mercy. Allah says: “And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah ? - (3:135).

ADMIXTURE OF RIGHT AND WRONG (SERMON 50)

The basis of the occurrence of evils are those desires which are acted upon and the orders that are innovated. They are

against the Book of Allah. People co-operate with each other about them even though it is against the Religion of Allah. If

wrong had been pure and unmixed it would not be hidden from those who are in search of it. And if right had been pure

without admixture of wrong those who bear hatred towards it would have been silenced. What is, however, done is that

something is taken from here and something from there and the two are mixed! At this stage Satan overpowers his friends

and they alone escape for whom virtue has been apportioned by Allah from before. (Nahj ul Balagha)

The world evidently consists of various kinds of phenomena, the study of whose characteristics has given birth to spe-cialized fields of science. Moreover, despite the expansion in different spheres of knowledge and the vast number of wonderful and valuable discoveries made in various disciplines, there still remain, in our immediate surroundings and on this very planet, many things unknown, the effort to solve whose mystery has occupied our inquisitive scientists.

However, as already mentioned, man has always been confronted with a series of fundamental questions. The need to find correct and convincing answers to such questions is a pressing demand of his innermost nature. Furthermore, since these problems concern matters outside the realm of the senses and empirical experience, their solution cannot be expected from the experimental sciences and must be provided by reason and logic alone. It so happens that the correct solution of the aforementioned problems is of fundamental importance in giving meaning and value to human existence, and directing man's voluntary activities into proper channels. The opposite of this is also true, in that giving wrong answers to these questions makes life empty, meaningless, and devoid of worthwhile goals, dragging man into the abyss of irreparable loss. Nor can man afford to ignore these fundamental questions, since by do-ing so he would, in addition to having to endure the pain of doubt, perplexity, and anxiety, deprive himself of the op-portunity of attaining the ultimate aim of creation: perfection and everlasting felicity.

One of those fundamental questions which man must answer is whether the phenomena we encounter in our world owe their existence solely to material actions and reactions, without any participation or intervention of a nonmaterial power. Is there no nonmaterial power involved either in the emergence of the phenomena or in the existence of mat-ter itself? Or, to put it another way, does matter constitute the totality of being, or does it constitute only a part of existence and relies on something beyond itself for its being?

The above question, which itself can be analysed into a number of other questions, is not limited to the properties and characteristics of any particular group of physical creatures, so that it may be answerable by some specific science through its own particular method. It is, on the contrary, a philosophical question, which must be studied by reason through intellectual speculation and analysis, even though the starting point for such speculation is empirical knowledge in its widest sense, which includes inner and direct experience as well.

The answer to the above question, whether in the positive or the negative, constitutes a part of one's world-view, plays an important role in forming a basic aspect of a person's intellectual approach which may be called "ontology".

Another basic question is whether the life of each individual human being is limited to the few years he lives in this world, or whether there is another life for him after he passes away, much longer and probably even an everlasting one. And this question in turn raises another one: Does man, beside possessing a physical body, also possess a soul which can continue to live after the death of the body or not? Then, there is the last question, which is also related to the first ontological question, whether being is equivalent to material existence or is wider than that.

The solution to the above-mentioned problem also, whatever it may be, constitutes another aspect of an individual's world-view, which may be called here `anthropology'.

And finally, the third fundamental issue to be settled before turning one's attention to the details and selecting a partic-ular course for one's life is: What is the most certain way of knowing the best programme for individual and social life? Is there any fool-proof way beside the usual ways commonly adopted by most people which so often lead to contradic-tory results, which would guarantee the certainty of results?

The importance of the last question becomes more evident when the answer to the second question is in the affirma-tive; that is, when we conclude that man is immortal and that one must prepare beforehand for the felicity of afterlife

through conscious effort during the limited period of this life. When such a belief is accepted, the need for a sure way of determining the relationship between the two lives, and an elaborate plan that would guarantee everlasting felicity be-comes clearer. And the more the importance ascribed to the everlasting life, the greater is the significance of the path

leading to felicity in it. This issue may therefore be called the problem of "methodology." Accordingly, the fundamental problems of world-view are: ontology, anthropology, and methodology.

Imam Muhammad At-Taqi (a.s) Name: Muhammad bin Ali. Titles: At-Taqi, Al-Jawad. Kuniyya: Abu Ja'fer. Father: Imam Ali Ridha (a.s) Mother: Sabika (also known as Khaizarun). Birth: 10th Rajab 195 a.h. Madina. Death: 29th Dhulqa'da 220 a.h. Baghdad. Buried in Kadhmain. His Parents & Birth He was the only son of Imam Ali Ridha (a.s) The Prophet (pbuh) had said:

Imam Mohammad Taqi (a.s) Divine Knowledge Indeed, Imam al-Jawad (a.s) played his role and shared in enriching the scholarly school during the period of his leadership, which lasted nearly 17 years, and, also, safeguarded its patrimony. That period (of the Holy Imam) was distinguished by two things: De-pendence on text and narration of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and, also, on an accurate understanding and deduction of both the Book (the Quran) and Prophet’s traditions (Sunnah). Imam al-Jawad (a.s) , like his forefathers (a.s) ,used different means to carry out his scientific procedures, among them are: 1. The means of teaching and instructing those students and scholars and urging them to write and record and, also, sustain what comes from the Holy Imams of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s) or by bidding them to the art of writing, publishing, and classifying. Sheikh Tusi in his book "Rijal", mentioned the number of the close companions of Imam al-Jawad (a.s) and his narrators, who studied and were educated under his care to be about one hundred, including two women. Indeed, all these religious scholars quoted Imam al-Jawad (a.s) and wrote many books in different fields of Islamic sciences and knowledge. They enriched Islamic schools with true, original researches and thoughts. This fact is proved in the books of "Rijal" which mentioned the close companions of Imam al-Jawad (a.s) and, in which, they ex-plained their conditions, their publications and writings. 2.The means of appointing deputies and commanding them to spread out in different parts of the Muslim lands in order to be true callers to Islam, follow it and convey its divine laws. Books of history have recorded the correspondences of Imam al-Jawad (a.s) with his deputies who were spread in different parts of the Muslim world in order to convey Islamic faith and what they learned from the jurisprudence of the Household of the Holy Proph-et (pbuh) and their knowledge. 3.The means of scholarly debates and discussions. The books of traditions and narrations, have recorded for us, richly, discussions and debates in different kinds of sciences and knowledge and defending Islam and fixing its pillars in the fields of monotheism, jurispru-dence, interpretation, and narrations and so on. These discussions contained different researches. Among them were: Defending Islam and countering perverse ideas and deviated philosophies and ideologies which existed among the Muslims. And, also, repairing the ideological deviations which existed among

certain Muslims, such as: Exaggeration and incarnations and others or discussions to explain Islam and clarify its diverse fields.

Death & Burial With instigation from both the 'Ulema' and Ummul Fadhl, Mo'tasam sent poison which Ummul Fadhl put in Imam's drink and gave it to him. Imam died on 29th Dhulqa'ada at the age of 25 years and is buried near his grandfather in Kadhmain (the 10th Imam gave him ghusl and kafan).

Summary of Imam's Work

It is he who prepared and wrote books for the masails of Ijtihaad and Taqleed which were essential to prepare believers for the ghaibat of the 12th Imam.

Additional Notes

Once when the young Imam was on his way to Baghdad he came across Mamun's party returning from a hunting trip. All the other children on the street ran but the Imam did not. Mamun asked the young Imam, "Why did you not run away?" Imam said the road was wide enough for all of them and neither had he committed a sin. Mamun then asked him his identity. After finding out, he asked Imam what he (Mamun) had in his hands. Imam replied "Allah has created tiny fish in the river. These fish are hunted by the Hawks of the kings and the descendants of the Prophets reveal the secrets".

Allah (swt) created man in a manner in which he is incomplete and imperfect without a spouse. Man may upgrade his knowledge, faith and qualities, but he shall never reach the desired perfection while he does not have a spouse. (Be it man or women). Nothing can substitute marriage and the raising of a family. Both the male and female sexes need each other from a spiritual, as well as physical point of view. And each one of them is incomplete and imperfect when alone and in solitude. When they are placed beside each other, they complete each other. This is the law of creation and it commands the whole universe. The Quran calls man and woman the dress of each other.“They (wives) are as a dress for you (husbands) and you are as dress for them” (Surah Baqara, verse 187.)That is to say, They are the enhancement, counterpart, and guard of each other’s honour and secrets, and each one needs the other. Man cannot live honourably and eminently in society without dress. He feels himself in a state of imperfection. The lonely person too feels himself imperfect. Dress saves and protects a person from the effects of winter and summer. The spouse too saves one from worries, futility, homelessness, aimlessness, and solitude. As a dress decorates man, spouse too are the decoration of each other. SPOUSE:A big Blessing From Allah (swt) One of the greatest blessings of Allah to man is nice life-partner .The Prophet (pbuh) said in this regard: “The Muslim man has not achieved any benefits (from Allah’s blessings) better than a suitable Muslim wife, after Islam.”(wasail al-shia vol 14.p 23) Marriage: The Improver Of The Value Of Man’s Practices

Marriage and family raising imprints such an effect upon the existence of man by upgrading the worth of his personality on the way to its maturity, that even his practices and services become more valued and worthi-er before Allah and the angles, so that its value goes up to many times the pervious one. For example, con-sider this Hadith of Imam Jaffar (a.s): “Two cycles of service offered by a married person is more excellent and worthier than seventy cycles of service offered by a bachelor and unmarried person”(wasail Al-Shia) The Love lest Center To Allah (swt) The unit which is formed through marriage is the object of Allah’s love and kindness, and He views it with tenderness and benevolence. The great ambassador of Allah (pbuh) has put it in this way: “No construction has been constructed lovelier than marriage to Allah - May he be honoured and glorified.” What prosperity and beneficence can be loftier than Allah’s love for one’s family and dwelling ( that too in the supper way) and viewing it with love ,affection , and kindness?
