McCABE HOUSE Off Route 51 , northwest of Spring Gap 1900 - 1~05

The ~1cCare House was constructed in

the earl:;· 1900 ' s for the Wheeler family .

It is a large stuc~o structure two :ind a

hAlf Rtories tall a~d three bays wide ,

built in the <'lueen Anne Style. The roof

is low hipped with a soffit and eaves ,

contains a hipped roof dormer on the

north side , and has a cross gable on

the west side. Windows in the building

at""e double hung wooden sashes with plain

molding a~d eight over one lights . The

main ent~ance on the north side is quite

elaborate with a verticle eight light

door with side lights . This structu1·e

typifies the style of ~hose built in the

fi -st quarter of the 21)th Century in

Allegany County.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The McCabe House is located just off Maryland Route 51, Northwest of Spring Gap> Allegany County.

The McCabe House is a lnrge square stucco structure that is three bays wide and two and a half stories high. Two ad­ditions have been made to the building which include an enclosed porch on the west side of the structure and a small frame addition in the rear of the building. The entire structure is supported by a high stone foundation with a beveled watei.· table. The roof is low hipped and covered with replaced asphalt shingles and has a soffit and eaves . The roof line is interruptetl by a single dormer located on the north side and a pedimented cross gable located on the west side of the building . Windows in the build­ing are double hung wooden sashes with plain molding and eight over one lights. The main entrance is located on the northern face of the building and features a verticle eight light door with side lights. Less elaborate entrances are also located on the east and south faces of the building. The main entrance is covered by a flat roofed three bay end porch which is supported by chamfered Roman Doric colwnns which rest on brick supports. Two corbeled brick chimneys are located in the interior of the building.

The Wheeler House was built in the early 1909'a for the 17heeler family. The house is n large stucco structure built in the Queen Anne style . Two members of the family, Raymond and his sistel; who was to marry a McCabe, were in part responsible for the building of n second large house in the area which is known as "The Oaks" .

The \~celer House is in good condition and is a good exam­ple of the kind of building that was done in Allegany County in the first quarter of the 20 Centu~y •
